He published The Decorative Arts in England, 1923.A very similar commode was at Chesterfield House, London, the former home of H.R.H. Princess Mary, Viscountess Lascelles and her husband, Viscount Lascelles, later 6th Earl of Harewood, K.G. Condition Report: Commode with the marks, knocks, scratches, abrasions consistent with age and use. Various old splits, chips and cracks. Some additional larger shrinkage cracks to front, top and sides - see images. Top appears to have been re-veneered. However, this has been neatly executed and matched to the rest of the piece. The central drawer has been later fitted/converted to a dressing drawer. The hinged mirror plate to the drawer has significant losses, depletion and foxing but this is artificial to simulate greater age. The ratchet to the mirror has had its hinges replaced. The interior has been fitted with an later arrangement of slides and drawers. Handles are later replacements. There are some small plugged holes visible from previous handles. Larger plugs are visible to the interior of the doors. The escutcheons to the doors are replaced as is the lock. A key is present and operates this lock. Locks to the drawers appear original. No key is present but all locks are open. Evidence of old worm - see images. The backs of the feet fitted with later 19th century concealed castors. These are worn to an uneven shape so do not roll. Three keys present but only operate the panel doors. No keys are present for the drawers, but all locks are open. The pierced gallery is lifting away from the top slightly in places. Old chips, splits and losses. The three finials to the cornice are later replacements or additions. The mirror plates have some depletion and grey spots but are later replacements. The moulded panels to the backs of the doors are also later replacements. Various old veneer and moulding repairs throughout - see images. One larger patched veneer repair to one side of the base. Handles are in period taste but are replacements. There are some plugged holes and 'shadow' visible from previous handles. The fitted element to the interior if the upper section (the drawers, pigeonholes, etc) is later and is removeable/not fixed in position. The cabinet appears to have originally been a bookcase as there are slots to the sides of the interior for adjustable shelves. Three keys present and operate all locks except lock to lowest drawer which is a later replacement Evidence of old worm. Some later screw used to secure locks and hinges. The undersides of the drawers with later tape and timber runners. Feet have age and are very well matched but are likely replacements. Old but later paper lining applied over backboards. Various old ink stains to interior of bureau section. The baize inset surface to the interior is a later replacement and is in tired condition. The banding to the drawers is also possibly later. Overall of cleaned/ polished appearance with some fading overall. The handles and escutcheons are replacements. There are neatly plugged holes to the drawer fronts from the alternate/ original set. There are repairs/ later veneer filling gaps adjacent to the escutcheons. (see images) The lowest drawer with dark colour to the natural cracks/ faults in the veneer. The feet are replacements but in period taste and match well visually. A FINE GEORGE III MAHOGANY AND INLAID SERPENTINE FRONTED COMMODE IN THE MANNER OF WILLIAM VILE, CIRCA 176584.5cm high, 115cm wide, 53cm deepProvenance:Barnwell Manor, NorthamptonshireA serpentine commode by William Vile incorporating a similarly gadrooned edge to the top is currently in the Sitting Room at Harewood House, Yorkshire (this piece was formerly at St. James's Palace). Another commode incorporating this design feature and attributed to Vile is held in the collection of the Metropolitain Museum of Art, New York (64.101.1142).For a pair of serpentine commodes of the period, incorporating some related features, see Christie's, London, Apter-Fredericks: 75 Years of Important English Furniture, 19th January 2021, Lot 10 (£162,500). Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and useOld chips and splits. some small losses. Some old repairs and restorations as expected for age and use. The dust boards in between the drawers are all showing wear and rub marks, this is caused by the rubbing action of the drawers being opened and closed against these boards. The underside of the drawers show wear also. The drawers have later runners to the undersides in order to assist practical use. The rear panel is original. Good colour and patina overall. Please refer to additional images. The brass handles are of the period. There is no clear physical evidence of the handles being replacements. There are no alternate holes to the drawer fronts for handle fittings. There are some different types of fixing nuts securing the handles them of various date as is often found. The locks appear original apart from one replacement. Lacking key(s). The locks are secured with screws of various date. The escutcheons are likely replacements as the hole to take the key is not large enough, several are misaligned with the pin of the lock. There are two very small fragments of carving detached but present. (additional images illustrate this) . There is an interesting paper inventory number label pasted into each of the two top drawers. They record the same number as each other and indicate that the commode was likely in a significant private collection previously. Unfortunately at this stage there is not enough evidence to indicate which collection this might have been. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition.
