These changes were defined by the number after the hyphen in the reference number inscribed on the inside of the case back. The current example is a 2998-1 which features the much admired calibre 321, straight lugs, small pushers and a round 'O' in Omega. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

By sinking the subsidiary dials and outer scale within the opaque black dial background, the dial achieves an unusual three-dimensionality and an instantly recognisable look.Arguably no other watch has ever captured the imagination of the collector's world in the same way that the Paul Newman Rolex Daytona has. In recent years this model in all its different incarnations has built up an almost mythical reputation. With its iconic design and the photos on Paul Newman's wrist the exotic Daytona dial truly represents the dream of watch collecting. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ΩΩ VAT on imported items at the prevailing rate on Hammer Price and Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The connection between McQueen and his Monaco had its origins in the relationship between McQueen and Jo Siffert. Jo Siffert who was one of the most successful sports car racers of the time was involved with the filming of the race scenes in 1970. Siffert arranged for other race car and famous endurance drivers, such as Derek Bell, Brian Redman, Rolf Stommelen, David Piper and others to participate too.For his Gulf Porsche 917 driving scenes, Steve McQueen wanted them to remain as true and original as possible and he insisted on wearing the same style of driving suit as Jo Siffert, with the large Heuer Chronograph logo on the front. The Heuer Monaco was just introduced with its cutting edge design and Steve McQueen decided to wear a Monaco in the film. Gerd Rüdiger Lang, former owner of Chronoswiss, was a time witness to these events and he himself started during the mid sixties as a young watchmaker at Heuer. He remembers bringing 20 Heuer wristwatches, some stopwatches, Heuer patches and stickers to Le Mans for filming just prior to the race in 1970. The Monaco's starring role on Steve McQueen's wrist helped create its legend, but it was the chronograph's radical look and its complete break with tradition, both inside and outside, that made it stand out. It had a fantastic presence during the film 'Le Mans' of more than 16 minutes. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The new timepiece should be easy to read, anti-magnetic and shock- and waterproof. Development started early in 1962 and the Heuer 'Carrera' was launched to the public a year later. The name 'Carrera' was simple, easy to pronounce, understood in various languages and evoked imagery of adventure, danger and heroism. The first Heuer Carreras can be identified by the ED.HEUER&CO.SA signature on their inner case backs and movements. Soon after the merger with Leonidas to Heuer-Leonidas in late 1964 the markings changed to HEUER-LEONIDAS SA. Hence the overall production time of Carreras with these Ed Heuer marks was only for six months. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The references 110503 W, B, N for luminous white, blue and black are shown in the 1972 Heuer catalogue. The Heuer Montreal was a good fit for an expansion beyond the northern borders of the US. Heuer provided time keeping expertise for the 1976 Olympic Games also at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal from 1978. Gilles Villeneuve driving for the Heuer sponsored Ferrari team in 1978 was the first Canadian to win the home Grand Prix. The Heuer Montreal is a large watch reflecting well the trend of the 1970's. The case on the black PVD seems even larger with its thickly coated finish. Powered by the proven Calibre 12 automatic movement, the steel chronograph pushers are on the right side, whilst the steel winding crown is embedded in a protective recessed notch on the left. The dials of the new reference differs from the 1972 model. The steel indexes have been replaced by all luminous filed ones and the former contrastive 1/5 scale ring had the same colour as the dial. The PVD Montreal was shown first in the 1976 Heuer catalogue and the Heuer Montreal was discontinued a year later. It is rare to have a black PVD coated watch in such good condition. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The first Monza generation was provided exclusively with a Calibre 15 and characteristic small second-hand stood at 10 o'clock. The name 'Monza' above the classical Heuer Logo in the upper part of the dial was a contrast to the Autavia, Carrera and Calculator models using the Calibre 15, where the name was put at 9 o'clock. The dial was surrounded by a pulse- and tachymeter scale, both very important for the world of motor sports. On Monza models, reference and serial numbers were engraved to the case back different from other Heuer model series where they are often between the lugs at 6 and 12 o'clock. The Monza was meant to attract a younger target group with its stylish look. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The brushed case was paragon of elegance and was reminiscent of the chronographs of the 1950's. It had a polished steel or gold bezel, which contrasted nicely with the brushed case finish and this was specific to the Verona. Fine hands and thin indices matched the dress watch appearance and the reference and serial number, often found between the lugs at 6 and 12 o'clock, were engraved on the case back.As the Verona was only shown in the 1978 and 1979 Heuer catalogues it is a very rare piece. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

One of the main indicators is the red 3H in a circle which signifies Hydrogen 3 or as it is more commonly known Tritium. Compared with the civilian version of this model, the military versions had screw down crowns to improve their water resistance. Every Astronaut and Cosmonaut were equipped with an Omega Speedmaster Professional and in the case of Alexey Loenov, two. To celebrate this, in 1976 the Jeweller De Marchi of Turin took delivery of a group of special celebratory Apollo Soyuz watches with the mission badge on the dial and a special embossed case back depicting the Saturn Rocket on a map of the world. The back was also lightly engraved with the limited edition number, an I for Italy and an Ω.The present watch was bought new in 1980 at a large discount when it is possible that the Italian market was a difficult place to sell this particular piece. It was soon inherited by the present owner who left it unused in a draw for many years and only sporadically wearing it. For this reason, the dial is in excellent condition with virtually no UV damage. Very few of these original pieces were created and they have been celebrated ever since with anniversary editions being produced at 20, 25 and 30 years. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
