Most were made in steel, being a rugged sports watch, but a few like this example were made in gold and some of those, predominantly for tax reasons, were made in 14K gold. This watch is made rarer still by the use of a black dial with gold subsidiaries which has the distinctive, printed in gold, spaced out Daytona. The movement is engraved ROW which was a designation given to the movements destined for the US market and is in line with it being 14K gold. The current lot is being offered by the family of a private and distinguished collector who had the normal plunge pushers changed for screw down pushers at some point to make it more water resistant adding to the charm of a well-loved timepiece. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ΩΩ VAT on imported items at the prevailing rate on Hammer Price and Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The current example carries the reference number 105.012, which appeared in the first quarter of 1964. The 105.012 was the first of the 'Speedies' to have Professional on the dial, commonly believed to be a result of NASA certifying the Speedmaster as suitable for their astronauts to use in Outer Space in 1965. Research undertaken between Omega and Anthony Marquie and Gregoire Rossier, authors of Moonwatch Only, have since highlighted that there is evidence of Professional appearing on 105.012s right from the beginning of 1964 thus dispelling this once popular myth. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Every Astronaut and Cosmonaut were equipped with an Omega Speedmaster Professional and in the case of Alexey Loenov, two. To celebrate this, in 1976 the Jeweller De Marchi of Turin took delivery of a group of special celebratory Apollo Soyuz watches with the mission badge on the dial and a special embossed case back depicting the Saturn Rocket on a map of the world. The back was also lightly engraved with the limited edition number, an I for Italy and an Ω.The present watch was bought new in 1980 at a large discount when it is possible that the Italian market was a difficult place to sell this particular piece. It was soon inherited by the present owner who left it unused in a draw for many years and only sporadically wearing it. For this reason, the dial is in excellent condition with virtually no UV damage. The owner sent it once for a service but kept all of the original parts which are available with the lot.Very few of these original pieces were created and they have been celebrated ever since with anniversary editions being produced at 20, 25 and 30 years. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

To further enhance legibility on the dial, the subsidiary dials were printed in a different colour than the main dial. Early models featured only the designation 'Cosmograph' on the dial, with 'Daytona' being added to later series, after Rolex became associated with the NASCAR car races. The current lot is offered for sale by the original owner and was purchased in 1970 for £109 as a belated 21st birthday present. The vendor originally went in to purchase an Omega Speedmaster but upon finding that the store were out of stock was offered the choice of this Daytona instead. Up until circa 2000 the watch was regularly serviced by Rolex and has since been kept in a safe unused for the last 20 years. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The following years witnessed far more subtle changes, which are less easily identifiable, and that might only be differentiated by the length of the hands or the scale on the bezel for example. These changes were defined by the number after the hyphen in the reference number inscribed on the inside of the case back. The current example is a 2998-6 which features the much admired calibre 321, straight lugs, tall baton hour markers and a low 'Swiss Made', as well as small pushers. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
