Gewicht 78,28 g.Genf, Schweiz, um 1990.Die 1986 erschienene Patek Philippe Referenz 3971 und ihr Geschwistermodell die Referenz 3970 weisen bemerkenswerte technische Verbesserungen gegenüber den vorherigen Modellen der angesehenen Manufaktur auf. Das Modell liefert seinem Träger nun auch Informationen über das Schaltjahr sowie die Tag- und Nachtzyklen. Darüber hinaus ist die Referenz 3970 ein Zeitzeuge einer äußerst relevanten Entwicklung der Schweizer Uhrmacherkunst. Ende der 1980er besann sich Patek Philippe auf die Qualitäten mechanischer Uhrwerke zurück. Diese Epoche kann als Zeit de Umbruchs uns der Renaissance der mechanischen Uhrewerke gesehen werden. Während man bei der Referenz 3970 noch einen massiven Gehäuseboden präferierte, entschied man sich bei der Referenz 3971 für eine elegantere Variante. Die erste Serie wurde mit aufklappbarem Glasboden produziert. Die Modelle der zweiten Serie, von welchem uns hier eines zur Auktion vorliegt, haben einen verschraubten Glasboden aber behalten das Design des Zifferblatts der ersten Serie bei.Nach erneuter Veränderung für die dritte Serie wurde die Referenz 3971 eingestellt und nur die Referenz 3970 weiterhin produziert. Diese wird seither mit metallenem sowie verglastem Boden angeboten. Auch die Gestaltung des Zifferblatts änderte sich. Die Zeiger sind nun Stabzeiger, und die Indizes sind nicht mehr vollkommen rechteckig. Eine Innovation stellte auch die Plazierung der Punzen an den Außenseiten der Bandatnsöße dar, die wir ausschließlich bei den frühen Modellen dieser Serie kennen.

Africa 1899-1902, No.311979Size: 52mmFootnotes:The current lot belonged to Sir William Henry Ingilby (1874-1950) who served as a lieutenant in the first battalion of the Scots Guards in the Boer War (1897-1900). He saw action at the battles of Belmont, Modder River, Diamond Hill and in the relief of Pretoria and was awarded the Queen's Medal with six clasps and the Kings Medal with two clasps. Upon the inner front of this watch is engraved 'S. Africa 1899-1902'.Lots 12-19 form part of the Ripley Castle Collection. Located three miles from Harrogate on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Ripley Castle has been the seat of the Ingilby family since the 14th century. Sir Thomas Ingliby (c. 1290–1352) married the heiress, Edeline Thwenge in 1308/9 and acquired the Ripley Castle estate with its medieval manor house as her dowry. While hunting, their eldest son, Thomas (1310–1369), saved Edward III from being attacked by a wild boar and was duly knighted with the boar's head incorporated into the Ingilby family crest. Subsequent generations of the Ingilby family have survived periods of political and religious turmoil and witnessed great societal change.
