It was designed as a mini computer to be worn on the wrists of pilots, so they could make in flight calculations such as fuel consumption, average speeds or climbing speeds. Earlier examples of the Navitimer came with beaded bezels and were marketed to the AOPA (Aircraft and Pilot Association). Over time the Navitimer was updated with various dial designs. In 1965 the beaded bezel was replaced for a milled edge, which can be found on this example. It is also at this time that the Twin Jet logo can be found on the dial.

This was quickly replaced in 1972 by the 176.007 adding a tachymeter bezel and which became a firm favourite in the line until 1976. Particularly poignant in this anniversary year, the telex discusses the functioning of Buzz Aldrin’s Omega Speedmaster on the Moon’s surface. The story goes that rumours had started suggesting Aldrin’s watch had not worked during the EVA. This would have tarnished Omega’s most historic publicity opportunity and so Omega asked for a statement from NASA confirming that the watch performed correctly. This is the answer from NASA giving that confirmation. The ref. ST 105.003 was first produced in 1963 for a short run until 1966. However, Omega kept delivering this model to authorised dealers until 1967. This would explain the production date stated on the extract presented with this example. The 105.003 was the last of the Speedmasters to be produced without Professional on the dial, with straight lugs and crown guards. It was also the first to have baton hands. In 1965, Ed White wore a 105.003 Speedmaster during his first E.V.A. (Extra vehicular activity) on the Gemini IV mission, which was also the first for N.A.S.A. Hence the 105.003 being given the nickname 'Ed White' among collectors.
