A Fine and Rare Gent's Stainless Steel Pre-Moon Omega So-Called 'Ed White' Speedmaster Chronograph Wristwatch, ref. 105.003, 1963, (calibre 321) 17 jewel lever movement signed and numbered 20,522,860, column wheel chronograph, dust cover, matte finished black dial with luminous baton markers and outer seconds track, three dials for seconds, 30-minute and 12-hour registers, buttons in the band to operate chronograph, tachymeter bezel, screw-off case back with Speedmaster emblem, inside case back numbered S 105.003-63, on Omega stainless steel bracelet with deployant clasp numbered 1035 4/68, case 39mm wide, in Omega box. Together with an issue of Life Magazine, June 18 1965, covering 'The Glorious Walk in the Cosmos', Ed White's Space Walk. * The Speedmaster reference 105.003 is known among collectors as the ''Ed White'' model as it was the model worn by NASA Astronaut Edward Higgins ''Ed'' White (1930-1967) when he was the first American to walk in space in 1965. The watch is characterized by the straight lugs, no crown guards and just signed on the dial 'Omega Speedmaster' without the professional signature. CONDITION REPORT: The watch appears to be in excellent condition for its age. The crown winds smoothly and the time adjusts absolutely fine. The chronograph buttons work perfectly and all the dials are changing as they should. The dial and bezel have a good aged patina. When inspected very closely it appears that the counterweight end of the central chronograph hand has been retouched slightly with white paint/enamel. The crown is original. The Omega bracelet is dated '68 and has replacement end-links. A couple of the links are perhaps a little stretched but overall the condition is very good. Both the bracelet and watch case have fine surface scratches commensurate with age and use, but no major dents or deep scratches etc. The case back screws firmly shut. The watch movement appears quite clean and is running fine. The Omega box is in good condition. It is of similar age to the watch but I cannot say with certainty if it is the original. There are no papers.
