Small selection of A.Ls.S., Robt Scott Moncrieff, 12 pages (total), one partially cross-written, 8vo, Little Dunham, Forgandenny, January 1811 - October 1812, to Colin Scott Moncrieff, Robin Scott Moncrieff. The young Moncrieff corresponds on various issues, including his early attempts at painting, in part, 'My return home will give me more pleasure than it will you… It restores to you only a brother, but to me parents, grandparents, sisters, brothers, cousins, country, every thing in short that is dear to me… I have been trying yesterday and today to draw a view of the house… but when it came to the painting part, I went all wrong especially in doing trees - If you could give me some instructions in your next letter about painting, I would be very much obliged to you… just tell me what colour I should lay down first… Brereton has lent me his paint box which contains a cake of most wretched Indian ink, some small pieces of Prussian Blue, Lake, Gamboge, and two or three more…' Little Dunham, January 19th 1811), 'As you wished me to send you a plan of this house, I have drawn one on the opposite page, which I will proceed to explain… and on the other side of the of the door is a small long book case - These I have done with pencil, that you may rub them out when you please - Above the fireplace in our room are hung three sketches, and a painting of mine. WW2 Royal Navy Submarine “Jolly Roger” Patrol Flag Attributed to H.M. Submarine “Thule”Direct from the family of Able Seaman W.Y.S. Fern, this “Jolly Roger” was presented to him, as the most junior member of the crew, upon leaving HMS Thule by her Captain, Lieutenant Commander Alastair Campbell Gillespie Mars, DSO, DSC and Bar in 1945. The black cotton bunting flag, is decorated to the centre with a white cotton skull and crossbones, Crossed Cannons with three Star (3 surface Gun Action Sinking), Two Daggers (2 Cloak & Dagger Operations), Yellow Chevron (Japanese Vessel Sank), 2 Red Chevrons (2 Warships sunk), 5 White Chevrons (5 Merchant Ships Sank). The cotton edging is stamped “BATT 19”. The flag is in flown condition. Overall Size 42 x 48 inches... The flag is accompanied by a digital copy of a number of original snap shot photographs, including submarines and shipmates during AB Fern service in the Far East. Able Seaman W.Y.S. Fern was born in 1924, in 1942 he volunteered for service with the Royal Navy and then for the submarine service. After initial training he joined HM Submarine Tribune which during 1943 operated as a training boat. He was then posted to the Far East. He joined HM Submarine Thule in January 1945 and would start his career with the subs 3rd Far East War Patrol, which included a “Clock & Dagger” operation. AB Fern was the youngest of the crew and would have been responsible for the upkeep of the “Jolly Roger” After several patrols Fern was posted out of the boat and family legend has it that her Captain, Lieutenant Commander Alastair Campbell Gillespie Mars, DSO, DSC and Bar one of the most successful British submarine commanders presented the “Jolly Roger” to him. After a short brake Fern saw later submarine service with :Trident”, “Token” and in 1946 “Sportsman” which it is believed he crewed during her voyage back to the UK.

Victorian East Lothian Yeomanry Cavalry Helmet.A fine and rare example of the Trooper’s helmet of the 1846 pattern. Black leather skull, peak and neck peak, with brass edging. To the crown of the helmet a gilt metal acanthus leaf plume holder and now supporting a scarlet and white horsehair plume, surmounted by a rose boss. Two rose head bosses support a leather backed brass chin chain. To the front a helmet plate comprising a large gilt thistle wreath surmounted by a Crown; within the wreath, a Garter, enclosing the Star of the Order of the Thistle. Below the Garter, among thistle sprays, four scrolls “East, Lothian, Yeomanry, Cavalry”. The interior retains the original leather lining. Small amount of age wear.In 1888 the title of the Regiment changed incorporating Berwickshire. “Headdress of the British Army Yeomanry” by W.Carman, describes a leather helmet adopted by the Regiment at the time of the Crimean War and worn until the title change, when a white metal helmet with white plume was adopted.

Royal Horse Guards Elizabeth II Period Trooper’s helmet. A good example. The nickel skull with bi-metal Queen’s Crown helmet plate to front. To each side, a gilded rose head boss supports the leather backed chin chain. A silvered plume holder to the crown supports a scarlet plume. Complete with its original leather lining. The overall condition is good, small working dents to the skull and plume holder.

North Somerset Yeomanry Cavalry Victorian Officer’s 1847 “Albert” pattern helmet.A fine and scarce example worn by the Regiment circa 1854-1901. Silvered skull decorated with gilt metal floral leaf design. Helmet plate bearing a brass title strap inscribed “The North Somerset” with an entwined VR Cypher to the centre. Rose head bosses support a brass chin chain with velvet backing. The plume holder of leaf design supports an incorrect black flowing horsehair plume with a rose head boss. The interior retains quilted cotton sweatband, lining. Minor age wear.

Victorian Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry Cavalry Helmet.A fine and rare example of the Regimental pattern worn from 1852 until the introduction of busbies in 1871. The skull of the helmet is of black nap, whilst the front and neck peak is of polished patent leather edged with a Sheffield plate rim. A round the base of the skull is silvered strap. Surmounted by a ornate plume holders and white & scarlet horsehair plume. To the front is an elaborate Regimental device. A Garter strap, surmounted by a crown, is with an entwined VR Cypher to the centre. The strap is flanked by a wreath of half laurel and oak leaves. To the base a tri-part title scroll “Royal 1st Devon”, “Yeomanry”, “Cavalry”. Two flower head bosses support a velvet backed interlinked chin chain. The interior is with quilted wax cotton lining. The helmet retains a good shape, minor age wear.

5th (Princess Charlotte of Wales’s) Dragoon Guards Officer’s 1871 Pattern Helmet.A fine, scarce example, the fire gilt skull decorated with laurel leaves; to the front a helmet plate of silvered cut star overlaid with a fire gilt title strap P.C.W. Dragoon Guards encircling a silvered 5 against a gilt backing plate. A gilt spike supports a white over scarlet regimental pattern horsehair plume with gilt rose boss. To each side are rose head bosses which support a gilt and red leather backed interlocking chin chain. The interior with quilted material sweatband. Minor dents to skull, gilt remains bright and fresh.

Victorian Fife Light Horse Trooper’s helmet.A good example of the 1871 pattern silvered helmet. To the front, a regimental pattern helmet plate bearing the Thane of Fife on horseback wearing full armour set against a gilt brass ribbed satire. This in turn mounted onto a four pointed silvered star, the uppermost displaced by a Victorian crown. A tri part scroll is with motto and to the centre FLH in gilt metal. Two rose head bosses support a incorrect gilt interlinked chin chain, with leather backing. A silvered spike supports a white horsehair plume, with gilt metal rose boss. The interior with leather sweatband. Overall GC some dents to skull, minor service and age wear, stitching faults to the chin chain.This pattern of helmet was approved by the regiment in 1896

The crown surmounted by a brass cruciform base, supporting a long spike. To the front a brass helmet plate and Brass bosses support brass chin scales. The interior retains leather sweatband. Overall GC retains a good shape. Leather in good condition.

To the crown, is a brass comb, to each side floral leaf decoration This mounted with a floral embossed plume holder with short black plume. The front with a Medusa’s head looking forward, from the comb a flowing black horse hair plume. The body of the helmet now fitted with replacement leopard skin and with a floral embossed plume holder to the left. Two large circular flower head bosses support a leather backed interlaced chin chain. The interior with leather lining (part loose). Overall GC.

WW2 1943 Airborne Forces steel helmet with leather harness.A scarce example by Briggs Motor Bodies, Ltd (Dagenham), the skull is painted with light green finish and is complete with webbing and leather chin harness. The leather sweatband bears maker’s details of ‘B.M.B’ and 1943 date stamp, size 7 5/8. Some service wear, remains a good example of the pattern.

National and State cockades support gilt brass chin scale strap and to the crown a tall silvered spike with perlring, its circular base secured by four gilt stars; silvered backstrap. The interior with leather sweatband and two part upper silk lining. Old paper size label ‘59’ to inside of skull. Minor service wear, splits to front peak binding, silk lining slightly shot in places . Overall VGC.

Imperial German Officer’s peaked cap.A good example attributed to Westphalian Cuirassier Regiment No.4. Fine black cloth crown with red band and yellow piping to crown-seam and edges of band,. To the front of the the crown a replacement cockade, on the band, a blue and silver cockade; skull and crossed bones now absent. Black pressed fibre peak (loose and restitched), calf leather sweatband (stitching AF). Cream silk lining with some wear.

Foliate decoration to the peaks. A "candlestick" plume socket with acanthus base, containing a black horsehair plume. Burnished gilt chin-chain lined with black velvet, with rose finials. Shaped internal headband of red leather, bearing initials (indistinct), with silk lining above. The skull with minor dents and some rubbing to the gilt; the bayleaf spray with one leaf defective; plume not original.

Anonymous (17th century), Christ and a Martyr, oval bronze-gilt locket in the form of a box medal, with image of Christ facing left and the lid with image of a martyr wearing a friar’s habit and with a dagger embedded in his skull, 43mm x 38mm x 13.6mm, very fine with loop for suspension, very rare. The identity of the friar martyr may be the Dominican St Peter of Verona (1206-52) or the Carmelite St Angelus of Jerusalem (1185-1220) both of whose attributes include a bladed instrument embedded in the skull. The bust of Christ is taken from a late 16th century medal (Attwood 196). Hill noted that it is the earliest medallic image of Christ wearing the Crown of Thorns.
