Lieutenant Colonel Mike Snook. Like Wolves on the Fold-The Defence of Rorke`s Drift 24 X 16cm Wednesday 22 January 1879 was one of the most dramatic days in he annals of military history. In the morming,a modern British army was swept aside by the onset of a seemingly unstoppable host at Isandlwana. Nearby, at a remote border outpost on the Buffalo River, a single company of the 24th Regiment anda few dozen recuperating hospital patients were passing another hot, monotonous day, News of the disaster across the river came like a bolt from the blue. Retreat was not an option. It seemed certain that the Rorke`s Drift detachment would share the terrible fate of their comrades. Lieutenant Colonel Snook brings the insights of a military professional to bear in this strikingly original account. It is an extraordinary tale- a victory largely achieved by the sheer bloody-mindedness in adversity of the British infantryman. fighting at remarkable odds of over thirty to one. The heroics of all eleven VC winners are recounted in detail, and we are offered new insights into how the Zulu attack unfolded and how 150 men achieved their victory. Hardback with unclipped dustcover- Foreward by Lieutenant Colonel Huw Lloyd-Jones.Preface. xi plus 302 pages text and index. With supporting illustrations and photographs. As New. MILITARY MEDALS, A Pleasing Great War DCM and WW2 Group of 5 awarded to Private Robert Farnham, 1st Battalion, Hertfordshire Regiment (TF), awarded the DCM for making a daring wire-cutting trip into No Man’s Land where he was wounded by German gunfire, but still managed to retrieve a wounded soldier and return to his trench, comprising: Distinguished Conduct Medal, GVR (4420 Pte R. Farnham. 1/Herts: Regt-T.F.), 1914-15 Star (4420 Pte. R. Farnham, Herts. R.), British War and Victory Medals, 1914-1920 (4420 Pte. R. Farnham. Herts. R.), Defence Medal, 1939-1945; first four medals officially impressed, the latter unnamed as issued, group swing mounted on bar with reverse pin for wear, sold with original Hertfordshire Regiment cap badge. Good very fine. (6) DCM London Gazette 11.03.1916 – ‘For conspicuous gallantry in carrying out a very daring and useful piece of reconnaissance.’ By family repute Private Robert Farnham volunteered to a request for volunteers in his company to venture out into ‘No-Man’s Land’ and cut the wire in advance of a planned attack. The wire was, however, only 50 yards from the German trenches, and upon arrival at the wire he was shot in the wrist and both legs, but still managed to return to his own trench, whilst also helping to retrieve another wounded soldier. The family record that it was for this act that he was awarded the DCM. Two other men, 1732 Corporal William G Spinks, and 3630 Pte Charles Hagger, both of the 1st Herts Regiment, share similar citations with a touch more information, and clearly make up the other members of the reconnaissance party. Given the date of the award, it is possible that the event took place in September 1915 at Loos. Private Farnham reputedly carried the scars and a bullet still inside his wrist until his final days. He was born 11 October 1891, and died 9 April 1976. Sold with copy MIC and SWB mention, showing that he enlisted 5 January 1915, and that he was discharged 1 September 1916. Worthy of further research.

This is a live breast cast made from plaster of paris of Kerry Farrant. Kerry says ""I have taken part in this amazing project because at the age of 28 and 12 wks pregnant my life changed forever. Having to go through surgery to have my left breast removed while carrying my unborn baby was a difficult thing to face but I knew I had no choice as I needed to fight this awful disease all the way to the end so I could be here for my then 2 yr old daughter and the daughter I hadn?t met yet. Having one breast was a weird and scary experience getting young hip bras was near on impossible, but that was the least of my problems I had to still face my 6 sessions of chemotherapy and 15 sessions of radiotherapy oh yes and of course give birth. After 4 chemo?s and 34 wks pregnant I was inducted and my beautiful baby Esmay was born 3lb 14oz and perfectly formed. I went on to have the rest of my chemo and radio then herceptin. I?m 5 yrs since diagnosis now, I have had 2 further breast operations and although I don?t have any nipples or feeling in my breasts I?m happy with what I have and I?m happy to be alive I wanted to share my breast cast with everyone to show that you can still look normal and that surgeons can do marvellous things. My baby Esmay has just started school and I thank all the hospital staff that made it possible for me and her to be here today to share the experiences of life"". Kerry`s cast was painted by artist John Frith of Art by Frithy. ""When I was first asked to contribute to this amazing project, I was a little daunted about such a sensitive issue, but seeing the enthusiasm of Sue Smith and all the other ladies involved, how could I possibly say no? It took me a while to decide what to paint on the cast I was given, and it was hanging around the studio for a bit while I sought inspiration. Then it came, a pair of chimps! My technique is fairly loose; I have had no formal training and just do what comes into my head at the time with whatever materials are to hand!"" This is a live breast cast made from plaster of paris of Bianca Carpenter. Bianca says, ""I`m Bianca, I`m a healthy 27 year old who eats well and runs 3 times a week as I enjoy taking part in running events such as half marathons and of course the race for life which myself and my mum enter every year. I found a lump in my left breast in July and on August 13th 2014 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Rather than feel sorry for myself and sad I`ve decided to be as positive and upbeat as I can. I`ve chosen to have a cast of my breasts done to help promote awareness of breast cancer in young women and to get it out there that women need to be checking their breasts what ever age they are. So let`s raise money as well as awareness and kick cancers butt together. Bianca`s cast was decorated by artist Keri Bird, ""The idea behind the art on Bianca`s cast, is that the art signifies a white swan. For me, a white swan has the following meaning which I find really poignant: ? LOVE - It sometimes takes something so tragic to happen in our lives to realise how loved we are, and how much we love others. Since Bianca`s diagnosis I have seen the love and support so many people have shown her. ? BEAUTY - Bianca is a beautiful, young 27 year old whose life has been turned upside down at such a young age. Her strength and positivity at such a difficult time, has demonstrated to me what a beautiful person she is on the inside, and out. The Simply The Breast project has also been a way to show that we are all different shapes and sizes, and no matter what, you are still beautiful. ? ELEGANCE - Bianca has carried herself with such elegance through this difficult time in her life. She has continued to smile, stay strong and has been so willing and open to share her journey with others, to help raise awareness of Breast Cancer in young people"". www.birdsbodycasts.co.uk The approximate size of this cast is 15 inches x 15 inches. This is a live breast cast made from plaster of paris of Deborah Blumfield. Deborah says, ""Having breast cancer is a life changing journey and I wanted to share a very positive outcome. Following a left mastectomy in April 2006 age 46, I had reconstructive surgery in July 2008. Most people would never know what has happened so to share the fact that research, treatment and a positive attitude can conquer this disease means it had to be done"". Deborah`s cast was decorated by artist Michele Webber. ""As soon as I saw the cast I wondered if I could mosaic it, and I started drawing on it with little idea of what I was drawing. First I had a sort of neckline shape and wondered perhaps if I was going to put the top of a dress on the cast, but eventually it started to take a bra type shape. However it didn`t look like lingerie, more like a sports bra or bikini. That is when I remembered how much I had missed swimming during my own cancer treatment. It is no surprise I `dressed` my cast - when I was a kid my stepfather used to get the Sun newspaper, and I was always upset for the ladies who had no top on, and used to draw underwear on them in black biro. I have always been more interested in clothes and fashion than life drawing. People look so much less impressive than animals when they are uncovered, it is no wonder we invented such a wide range of colourful clothing types Whilst working on the cast I decided I had better finish some of my more usual panel extreme close up! My biggest concern with this project was the fact that the edges of the cast were thin and definitely flexible. This could go either way I thought... But amazingly the tiles seemed to stabilise it, and by the end it felt more like a piece of sculpture. I was pleased to find it stood up alone too. Realising that the cast would be seen from both sides I decided to paint the inside. I had in mind the red soles of Louboutin shoes... and as I walked through the kitchen (currently being replaced) I noticed the test area of cornflower blue I had painted on the wall. A couple of coats and some clear varnish and the cast was finished mosaics"". www.michelewebber.com The approximate size of this cast is 15 inches x 10 inches. After a brief spell returning to Liverpool as vicar of St Mathias church MacGregor returned to Tamworth as vicar of St Edithas Church. In 1885 MacGregor began to develop a potentially life threatening illness of the lungs probably as a result of Tamworth's growing cholera or typhoid cases. On advice from his doctor he wintered in the dry climate of Egypt and there became entranced by the country and its history. That same year he joined the Egypt Exploration Society and quickly became involved in its activities. By 1888 MacGregor was assisting Edouard Naville the fund excavator with a dig in Bubastis where he also took on the roll of photographer. In 1902 MacGregor began to sponsor excavations alongside fellow benefactors and museums beginning with Abydos then being excavated under the direction of Flinders Petrie on behalf of University College London. MacGregor's involvement as benefactor entitled him to a share of the antiquities found. Already a collector of Turner paintings from his visit to Egypt he turned his attention to acquiring Egyptian antiquities. In 1921 MacGregor decided to sell his collection to the firm of Messrs Spink & Son in the summer of the following year the collection was offered in 1800 lots through Sotheby's. A total of over 8000 pieces were sold over a period of nine days and it was hailed as a remarkable collection of Egyptian antiquities unparalleled by any other private collection in England, Europe or America. Hemisphere Occidental Dresse en 1720 pour l`Usage Particulier du Roy sur les Observations Astronomiques et Geographiques… . This fine map of the Western Hemisphere provides a nice view of the geographic knowledge in the New World in the early part of the 18th century. The northwest coast of North America is completely blank reflecting Delisle`s scientific approach to cartography. The French territory of Louisiane takes up the lion`s share of North America at the expense of the British colonies. This political bias is due to Delisle`s position as geographer to the King of France. Numerous explorers` routes are shown in the Pacific with good detail of the islands in the South Pacific. The western coastline of New Zealand reflects the discoveries of Tasman. Engraved by Delahaye. A nice impression on watermarked paper with a hint of toning along centerfold. 19"" W x 19.2"" H . Delisle, Guillaume . 1724

A Regency brass mounted mahogany bracket clock in the manner of Thomas Hope, The movement by Joseph Mason for retail by William Alexander, the case attributed to Banting and France, London, circa 1825, The five pillar twin fusee bell striking movement with anchor escapement, trip hour repeat and signed Wll’m Alexander, London within a foliate cartouche to the border-engraved shouldered backplate, the pendulum with calibrated slider for regulation and conforming concentric engraved decoration to the lenticular bob, the 7 inch circular convex white painted Roman numeral dial with repeat signature WILL’M ALEXANDER, LONDON to centre within cast brass bevel glazed bezel milled with continuous scroll design, the case in the Romano-Egyptian taste with brass pineapple finial to the gadroon-carved upstand incorporating brass mounted cavetto moulded collar and flanked by honeysucle carved ‘acrotoria’ finials, above geometric brass-inlaid ebonised moulded panel outline tapered front with crisply cut horizontal fluted infill to angles and shaped brass fillet inset panel beneath dial, the sides with obelisk outline repeating Gothic arch tracery pierced brass frets on fluted panel inset base with stylised fan carved feet, 51cm (20ins) high. Provenance: The property of a private collector, purchased from these rooms Wednesday 16th February 2011 (lot 119) for £3,200 hammer. Previously (in 1926) with George Boniface Souter the grandson of a major tenant farmer on the Goodwood Estate who died in 1952. Behind the dial of the current lot is the scratched inscription Jos’h Mason, London, Manufacturer who is recorded in Loomes, Brian Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World, Volume 2 as working from 2 Walbrook Place, London 1832-9. William Alexander is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working from Newington Causeway, London in 1825 and in Loomes as working 1828-44. The movement and bell bear detailed service inscriptions indicating that regular work was undertaken by the Hunter family, clockmakers of 136 High Street, Clapham from 1828-74, with two further dates up to 1896 by different makers based in Brixton. The case of the current lot belongs to a group of around fifteen known examples which share the same basic form and dimensions differing only in detail. Perhaps the earliest from this series is an example by Atkins and Son formerly in the possession of the Marquesses of Bristol sold by Christie’s, King Street, London at their ‘Ellerslie House’ sale, 24th May 2001 (lot 65). The first Marquis of Bristol employed the firm of Banting, France and Company to supply furniture for Ickworth, Suffolk including the state bed which shares similar details such as the ‘acrotoria’ finials with the ‘Atkins & Son’ clock and the current lot. This coupled with the stamped B.F. initials to the interior of the case of the current lot suggests that this particular form of case was made by Banting and France possibly to special order. The case design with its robust fusion of Ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian styles demonstrated the strong influence of Thomas Hope who, in his 1807 book Household Furniture published designs considered to be the height of fashion at the time. When considering his designs for smaller pieces of furniture such as for ‘Recesses in the shape of ancient hypogea’ (see Hope, Thomas Household Furniture plate XXVII no. I) the inspiration for the current lot can clearly be seen.

W.P. Schreiner W.P. SCHREINER Autograph Legal `Opinion` & Documents Foolscap William Philip Schreiner (1857-1919) was Olive Schreiner`s younger brother and and himself an important political and legal figure. He was a distinguished advocate of the Cape Supreme Court, Attorney General in Rhodes cabinet and subsequently Prime Minister of the Cape Colony. This small archive comprises the following: 1. 6pp. ribbon typescript prepared by Mackintosh McIntyre Solicitors of details of a Will and requesting `Counsel`s Opinion` regarding the children`s share of the income. The last page is signed in ink and addressed to The Hon. W.P. Schreiner K.C. in Cape town. It is dated East London, June 1903. 2. On the verso of the last page of the above document, W.P. Schreiner has written in ink a detailed opinion. This is written in a very small closely spaced script and continued in like vein on the side of page and signed by Schreiner. There are c65 lines and c800 words crammed on to the foolscap page. 3. Attached by paper clip to the first page of the typescript is a small note in the hand of Justice Oliver Deneys Schreiner, W.P. Schreiner`s son and well known judge and chancellor of Wits University. In it he states: `This case for opinion and the opinion was given to me by an attorney - I have forgotten who it was - in Bloemfontein several years ago. Signed with initials O.D.S. and dated 21.3.61. He was obviously passing this on for use in a similar case which is quoted at the top of the note. The condition of this lot is fair with some fraying and splitting at the folds, particularly the page with W.P. Schreiner`s autograph notes which is fragile. Schreiner`s autograph is uncommon and the joint presence of the autograph note from Oliver Schreiner, his son, makes for additional interest, linking the two great legal minds. Lots 8-55 THE DOROTHY MUGLESTON COLLECTION OF BLUE AND WHITE TRANSFER-PRINTED POTTERY Mrs Dorothy Mugleston was a noted collector and had a long-standing passion for antiques and especially for British blue and white transfer printed earthenware. A founding member of The Friends of Blue, an association formed in 1974 to study blue and white transfer-printed pottery, she remained a member up until her death in March 2014. She contributed to the FoB Bulletins and always attended the AGM and conference to improve her knowledge and to share her own extensive knowledge with other members. Several of her items have been illustrated in specialist books on blue and white pottery by A W Coysh, R K Henrywood and other experts. Dorothy's research of some patterns and marks led to a new understanding about which factories had produced certain patterns. This research was aided by her collection of original transfer pulls used in the production of blue and white pottery and an original copper-plate engraving used to make the transfers - also included in this sale. Several pieces have been lent to museums over the years, and she had much interest from the Canadian Museum of Civilisation in some of the items. A number of pieces featured in the 'True Blue' exhibition of British Transfer-printed Earthenwares at the Wedgwood Museum at Barlaston, Stoke on Trent between March and June 1998. This exhibition was to mark the 25th anniversary of Friends of Blue. Alan Mugleston, April 2014 All the items in this sale of principally blue and white wares are dated between 1800 and 1860.
