Lot 106

The 1970 MG Midget is a classic British sports car that embodies the charm and spirit of the 1970s automobile culture. As part of the MG line-up, the Midget has been known for its lightweight design and agile handling, making it a popular choice among driving enthusiasts. Featuring a petite two-seater configuration, this car is both compact and fun, ideal for those who appreciate a spirited driving experience. Under the bonnet, the 1970 MG Midget is powered by a 1.3-litre four-cylinder engine, which delivers a modest yet satisfying output of around 65 horsepower. While this may not seem substantial by today’s standards, the Midget’s low weight (approximately 1,590 lbs) allows for impressive performance and excellent fuel efficiency. Coupled with a four-speed manual transmission, the Midget offers an exciting, hands-on driving experience, with the engine sound enhancing its charm on winding roads. Visually, the 1970 MG Midget showcases classic lines and an appealing design that captures the essence of 1970s motoring. The round headlights, chrome bumpers, and signature MG grille are all characteristic features that contribute to its timeless aesthetic. Available in a variety of colours, the Midget was designed for open-top driving, with a convertible roof that adds to its allure, allowing enthusiasts to enjoy sunny days on the road. The MG Midget has garnered a cult following over the decades. Owners cherish not just its performance, but also the sense of freedom and nostalgia it evokes. Club events and classic car shows often feature these spirited little cars, where owners share their passion and pride in preserving this piece of automotive history.Originally registered on 9th January 1970 this MG Midget has formed part of a private collection in recent times. It has been well stored in a dry garage, however, a small amount of recommissioning may be required. We are advised the engine starts promptly and runs with good oil pressure. Finished in white with black interior this early Midget, with its chrome bumpers and Rostyle wheels, together with a rollover bar is a good looking example. Overall, the 1970 MG Midget stands out as a representative of a bygone era, cherished by collectors and drivers alike for its fun, engaging, and timeless driving experience. A good entry level car into classic motoring. Consigned by Stewart Banks. STARTS AND RUNS WELLWILL REQUIRE SOME LIGHT RECOMMISSIONING

Bristol Old Vic Theatre - An 18th century George III silver token for Bristol Theatre, King Street. The token engraved to read ' Bristol Theatre, King Street, May 30 1766.; The obverse engraved ‘No. 31 The Proprietor of this Ticket is Entitled to the sight of Every Performance to be Exhibited in the House'.(Viewing available by appointment only)The token was originally issued by the Bristol Theatre (now the Bristol Old Vic) allowing its owner unlimited free entry to any production. Fifty silver and two gold tokens were minted, and given to the first fifty shareholders who had each raised £50 to fund the construction of the theatre in 1766. The original shareholders of these tickets insisted that they could be loaned or traded, which led to great difficulty for the Theatre managers to keep track of who was entitled to enter the performances at no cost. The original owner of the token being theatre shareholder, Daniel Harson, Collector of Customs in the port of Bristol and formerly a dissenting minister from 1758 until his death in 1779. In 1816 the ticket and share of the theatre was held by John Palmer who was assigned his shares (and presumably the ticket) on 15 July 1793. The ticket and share had previously been in the hands of Antony Palmer Collings who had been the executor of the Original Proprietor, Daniel Harson, Collector of Customs. The share associated with the ticket was held by various persons in the 19th century to include Theatre Lessee’s James Henry Chute in 1861 and Andrew Melville in 1887. In 1925 the Final Dividend List shows ticket 31 as being owned by A A Levy-Langfield wherein it stayed in the family until being sold at auction in 2009 to the current owner. Supplied with some printed history. Bristol Old Vic will still honour this token should it be presented - the offer applies to Bristol Old Vic productions only, not visiting shows. (Confirmed October 2024). Measures approx. 31mm diameter. Total weight 12.9g.

An English mineralogist to Queen Victoria.Tennant was born on 8 February 1808 at Upton, near Southwell, Nottinghamshire. His father, John Tennant, was an officer in the Her Majesty's Customs and Excise; his mother, Eleanor Kitchen, came from a family of yeomen resident at Upton for more than two centuries. In October 1824, Tennant was apprenticed to John Mawe, a dealer in minerals at 149 Strand in London. After Mawe's death in 1829 Tennant managed the business with Mawe's widow, Sarah Mawe, who became known as "Mineralogist to Her Majesty". He purchased Sarah's share of the business on her retirement in 1840. Tennant attended classes at a mechanics' institute and the lectures of Michael Faraday at the Royal Institution in London. In 1838, on Faraday's recommendation, Tennant was appointed teacher of geological mineralogy at King's College London, later a professor. In 1853 the professorship of geology was added. From 1850 to 1867, Tennant was also a lecturer on geology and mineralogy at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. Tennant had an excellent practical knowledge of minerals; when diamonds were first found in South Africa, Tennant verified that they were indeed genuine. Tennant was an earnest advocate of technical education, giving his own money liberally to help, and persuading the Turners' Company, of which he was master in 1874, to offer prizes for excellence in their craft. When the Koh-i-Noor diamond was recut, Tennant superintended the work In 1840, he became mineralogist to Queen Victoria, taking over from Sarah Mawe. Tennant was elected a fellow of the Geological Society in 1838, and president of the Geologists' Association (1862–3). Tennant died in London on 23 February 1881. He never married.

LAGAVULIN 16 YEARS OLD | Stated age: 16 years old | ABV: 43% | Region: Islay | Country: Scotland | Type: Single malt Scotch whisky | Distillery description | Lagavulin is an iconic distillery located on the island of Islay, founded in 1816 by John Johnston, though the site had been home to illegal distilling prior to its establishment. Nestled between Ardbeg and Laphroaig, Lagavulin is renowned for its heavily smoky and peaty character. In 1862, the distillery was purchased by John Logan Mackie. His nephew, Sir Peter Mackie, a prominent figure in the whiskey industry and creator of the famous White Horse blend, played a significant role in its development. After losing exclusive representation to Laphroaig, Mackie constructed a malt mill on Lagavulin's grounds in 1908. However, despite its aim to produce whiskey akin to Laphroaig's, it never succeeded, and the whiskey produced bore little resemblance to Lagavulin's. A fictional cask from Lagavulin prominently featured in Ken Loach's film The Angel's Share. Today, Lagavulin is part of Diageo's Classic Malts range, with its most famous expression being Lagavulin 16 Year Old, regarded as one of the best peated whiskeys on the market. In addition to this staple bottling, limited editions are regularly released, including the Distiller's Edition, Diageo Special Releases, and offerings for the Feis Ile festival. | Bottle description | Lagavulin Aged 16 Years is one of the most iconic single malt whiskies from the Islay region, renowned for its intense yet subtle smoky character. A SCIMITAR PRESENTED TO CAPTAIN JAMES KEARNEY WHITE R.N. ABOARD H.M.S. NORTHUMBERLAND BY NAPOLEON BONAPARTE, ST. HELENA, 1815the 31in. curved steel flat blade with faint etching, brass quillon guards with cast and engraved foliate decoration, shaped polished stone grip with tassel hole to end, contained in brass mounted leather scabbard with medallion facings by suspension loops, the top locket engraved From Napoleon Buonaparte / To Captn. James Kearney White / St. Helena, October 1815. / H.M.S. Northumberland -- 36in. (91.5cm.) overallJames Kearney White (1782-1828) and thence by descent. Blade has small patches of corrosion but remains sharp, close examination shows the top third was once finely etched but this is now almost invisible.; the scabbard is scuffed and the top section now loose, but overall in fair condition.A FASCINATING AND IMPORTANT TRIO OF SWORDS PRESENTED TO CAPTAIN JAMES KEARNEY WHITE, R.N.James Kearney White was born in 1782 and although there is scant information about his family, his early life or his entry into the Royal Navy, the latter part of his career more than made up for this deficiency. He first came to notice in 1804, during operations off the coast of the Netherlands, when the 18-gun brig-sloop Scorpion was detached from Admiral Thornborough’s squadron to reconnoitre the Vlie passage into the Texel where she discovered two Dutch brig-corvettes at anchor in the Texel Roads on 28th March. One of them, the Atalante, was armed with sixteen valuable ‘long’ 12-pounders and Captain Hardinge, commanding Scorpion, resolved to take her. Not wanting to risk Scorpion herself because of the danger of shoals, he decided to mount a ‘boat action’ when conditions allowed. In the event, it was three days before the conditions were right and, at 9.30pm. on the evening of 31st March, in full dark, three boats from Scorpion and two from H.M.S. Beaver (which had joined the fray earlier that day) set out on the flood-tide. Nevertheless, it still took two hours to reach the Atalante which, by now, was on full alert and more than ready to repel any boarders. Leading the attack, Captain Hardinge himself was first aboard and, in a short but furious action, the Atalante was taken. In his subsequent despatch to Admiral Thornborough, Hardinge described Atalante as “one of the largest brigs in the Dutch navy… and admirably calculated for His Majesty’s service” and then went on to commend “the zeal and gallantry” of several individuals including “…Lieut. White” who was rewarded with a £50 sword from Lloyd’s Patriotic Fund (see lot 204).He next attracts attention during the Anglo-American ‘War of 1812’ during which he achieved at least a small measure of fame as well as wealth and, finally, a well-deserved promotion to post-rank. Having been made Commander on 10th June 1811, he was given the gun-brig Thistle, still on the stocks at Rochester but launched on 13th July 1812. From there, White took his new command to Chatham to oversee her fitting out after which she sailed for North American waters. White only stayed in Thistle just over a year until appointed to the command of the larger brig-sloop Peruvian in October 1814. The Peruvian had already enjoyed two very successful tours, first in the Caribbean in 1812 and then, in 1813-14, on the American Station during which she had captured two U.S. privateers and taken part in a daring expedition up the Penobscot River in Maine. When White took over the command in October 1814, crew morale was riding high and, under his captaincy, two more prizes were added in quick succession to Peruvian’s impressive tally – the Spanish ship Dolores and the U.S. merchantman Rufus – before Peruvian was ordered home in April 1815. By mid-June, she lay becalmed at Ostend and when Major the Hon. Henry Percy, the only one of Wellington’s aides to have survived the carnage at Waterloo unscathed, arrived with the news of the great victory, White took drastic action. With no wind in the offing, he immediately ordered Peruvian’s gig lowered and, after selecting four of his strongest crew, the six men, including both White and Percy who did their share at the oars, rowed it across the Channel to Broadstairs where the two officers hired a fast post-chaise-and-four and raced to London bearing the momentous news of Napoleon’s defeat.Once Napoleon had been brought to England and the decision taken to banish him to the distant island of St. Helena, Peruvian and her sister Zenobia were assigned to Admiral Cockburn’s squadron which was to escort the Emperor into exile. Extraordinarily, and before the long journey south began, Peruvian was despatched to Guernsey to pick up a supply of wine for Napoleon’s consumption in exile, a very personal service rewarded by the presentation of another sword (see lot 206). Later, when Cockburn became concerned that the French might use the then uninhabited island of Ascension as a base from which to mount a rescue attempt to free Napoleon, he sent Peruvian and Zenobia to claim it and, at 5.30pm on 22nd October 1815, White and Zenobia’s commander Captain Dobree went ashore, raised the Union flag and took possession of the island in the name of King George III. Leaving some marines as a garrison, the two sloops then resumed their voyage to St. Helena although, in the meantime, Peruvian’s crew had presented White with a splendid silver-mounted sabre (see lot 205), presumably purchased in Portsmouth before Cockburn’s squadron sailed. Months later, Peruvian returned to England carrying despatches from the island’s governor, and then laid up In Ordinary at Plymouth where she remained until broken up in 1830. After some shore leave, White returned to sea and was promoted Captain (December 1818) although he was already in command of the sixth-rate Spey (1818-August 1819). Before taking up his next command, another sixth rate, the Tyne, in February 1821, with orders to sail for the West Indies, White took the opportunity to marry Elizabeth Neeld in London with whom he had one daughter. His appointment to Tyne was short-lived however – barely one year – and he was not re-employed at sea, perhaps due to sickness. Given that he died in Bermuda on 2nd March 1828 at the age of only 46, it is possible that he had contracted one of the many fevers which afflicted Europeans there and died as a result, although this remains unconfirmed.

The rarest Production Porsche. One of 13 made worldwide, one of two in right-hand drive and the only right-hand drive car in the UK. On offer here is quite simply the rarest production Porsche ever built and is a unique opportunity in this country. This 911 Club Coupé is one of just 13 cars built, one of two right-hand drive examples and the only car to be delivered to the UK (the other right-hand drive car went to Hong Kong). The Club Coupé is a unique model created to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the first Porsche Club. The first club specifically for Porsche owners was originally known as the Westfalischer Porsche Club Hohensyburg and was set up in May 1952, just four years after the first 356 rolled off the production line, by a group of enthusiasts. There were 13 original members and consequently it seemed appropriate to build the same number of cars out of respect to those early owners who were so excited about their new cars that they got together to share their enthusiasm, little knowing what they had started.Of the 13 cars, only 12 were available for sale as Porsche themselves decided to keep one to be displayed at the Porsche Museum. Porsche regularly display their own example and it was recently presented at the launch of the 992.2 in Spain.Revered by Porsche collectors, over 50% have been retained by their original owners and Porsche have run rallies specifically for those select few owners. A film on YouTube, 'Rallye 911 Club Coupe La passion continue', will show what lies ahead for the purchaser. To make the ordering process for the remaining 12 a little fairer, the company ran a lottery system, which was opened on 16th June 2012, with each of the 12 lucky winners having their name engraved on a switch-panel trim strip. They were handed over at a dinner in Stuttgart hosted by Wolfgang Porsche. The Museum printed a limited run of 250 books dedicated to the story and documenting the build process, a copy of which will accompany the car.The stunning paint finish was described as Brewster Green and the vendor later ordered a new 911GTS to match for daily use. When parked next to each other, it was clear that the Club Coupé was a completely different colour. Further research with the Factory revealed that it was known internally as 'Family Green', a colour reserved exclusively for Porsche family members and as worn by Wolfgang Porsche's personal 993 Turbo S which is displayed at the Porsche Museum. A shade not offered nor available anywhere else adding to the car’s unrepeatable exclusivityMileage at the time of cataloguing was 7,918 in the hands of its three previous owners and the car has been well maintained by Porsche main dealers in recent years as you might expect with such a special 911. It was last serviced at Porsche Reading some 200 miles ago.The specification is impressive and includes:7-speed automatic PDK transmission. Lot 125

Ex-Ford press/promotion vehicle, previously owned by the Benetton F1 Team, with just a handful of enthusiast-owners, 47,000 miles and a huge history file. The original Ford Sierra RS Cosworth was the first Ford to wear the Cosworth badge and was presented to the public at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1985. It was introduced as a means of homologating the Sierra for 'Group A' Touring Car racing, with a requirement that 5,000 cars were built and sold. Launched for sale in July 1986 and based on the three-door Sierra bodyshell, it was designed by Ford's Special Vehicle Engineering (SVE) and was powered by a Cosworth-designed 2-litre turbo engine of now-legendary repute. At this time, the Sierra Cosworth was a new kind of performance car - a 'blue-collar hero' able to humble true sports cars. In total, 5,545 cars were produced - of which 500 were sent to Aston Martin Tickford for conversion to the Sierra RS500 Cosworth. If the RS Cosworth was a homologation car, the RS500 was an evolution special. Once Ford had built the requisite 5,000 RS Cosworths, 'Group A' rules allowed an upgraded evolution model to be launched. This could carry changes focused on improving its racing potential, provided Ford sold 10% of the original number as road cars, hence the 500. The RS500 was announced in July 1987 and had a mechanically uprated Cosworth engine (more similar to the one to be used in competition), with power boosted to 224bhp, upgraded brakes, modified bodywork and the cachet of being hand-assembled - the RS500 really is the ultimate 1980's Fast Ford! Indeed, during the model's 30th anniversary year in 2017, the RS500 was named the 'Ultimate Cosworth' by one of the UK's biggest one-make car shows. The car presented here is 1987 Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth (AMT #012 of 500/chassis #GG38602) in black, being just the second RS500 despatched from Tickford on 22nd June 1987. Registered D62 XVX, it was to be one of three examples to be used for ‘Press Appraisal’ i.e. a Ford press and publicity car. Iconic Auctioneers were honoured to sell another such example in 2023, registered D64 XVX, which achieved £140,000.#012 was paraded not only at the launch of the RS500 in the UK but all over Europe, as documented in numerous magazines articles and paperwork. Unsurprisingly, due to its significance, #012 was previously owned by Martin Thomas, the former RSOC RS500 Registrar. Martin and his wife Julie are real Ford aficionados and amassed a huge amount of history, provenance and press material surrounding #012 – all of which accompanies the car, in numerous files and dossier-type folders. Fascinatingly, they managed to find a period press image of Peter Collins, the manager of Team Benneton (whose F1 cars were powered by Ford), standing with the car promoting Cellnet car phones; supposedly, at this time, Benetton were responsible for #012, servicing and maintaining it (and rumour-has-it, ‘breathing on it...’) to their high standards. After #012 had completed its press duties, it was offered for sale at a Ford Motor Company auction, when it was purchased by the first of its Ford-enthusiast owners, subsequently being bought, loved and showed at numerous RS events by Martin and Julie Thomas, winning multiple Concours events and featuring in magazines over their years of dutiful ownership. In 2006, #012 was even invited to London to share in the convoy of significant and best of breed vehicles, amassed to help celebrate the 80th birthday of HM The Queen. The car is as good and as significant as you’d want from any RS500, coming to auction from another Ford devotee who has maintained the originality, condition and mechanical health of #012 since he bought it some years ago.Without doubt, a special example of the legendary RS500 which is highly regarded within the Ford community. This is a real opportunity to become a member of very exclusive club of RS500 owners at an attractive guide price.Specification Make: FORD Model: SIERRA RS500 COSWORTH Year: 1987 Chassis Number: WF0EXXGBBEGG38602 Registration Number: D62 XVX Transmission: Manual Engine Number: GG38602 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 47000 Miles Make: RHDClick here for more details and images

Beautiful coachwork finished in Nero Daytona complemented by Crema leather, 0-62mph in 3.7 seconds and just 29,353 miles from new. The Ferrari 599 succeeded its predecessor, the 575, in the summer of 2006 and brought the front-engined V12 Grand Tourer into the modern age. Whereas the 550 and 575, even at their introduction, always felt like modern classics, the 599 was every inch a new-age Ferrari. The all-aluminium chassis, F1 SuperFast gearbox, F1-Trac stability and traction control, magnetic semi-active dampers and carbon-ceramic brakes, all wrapped in aggressive, aero-optimised bodywork with minimal overhangs and maximum presence was a mission statement. Top billing, though, went to the engine - a lightly modified version of the Enzo's 6-litre V12 with a mighty 611bhp at 7,600rpm, endowing Ferrari's new series-production flagship with truly sensational performance with 0-62 in 3.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 205mph. Of the 3,500 Ferrari 599 GTB F1 Fioranos produced globally, the United Kingdom’s share, as is the norm with right-hand drive Ferraris, amounted to under 10% of the total production. Online resources confirm that there are currently 301 examples registered in the UK.This delightful 599 GTB Fiorano F1 was supplied new in the UK on 1st December 2006 with few option boxes left unticked. The well chosen combination of Nero Daytona with recessed Scuderia Ferrari shields complements the Crema trimmed carbon fibre bucket seats, black top roll and matching carpets, highlighted by carbon fibre and aluminium inserts. The factory-fitted equipment includes dual-zone climate-control, electrically adjustable seats with driver memory function, electric windows, rear parking sensors, a carbon fibre-trimmed steering wheel with LED shift lights, an electrochromic rear-view mirror, leather headlining, a Giallo tachometer and a premium Bose sound system, enhanced by a more modern Pioneer unit with Bluetooth connectivity.Sitting four-square on 20" ‘Monolithic’ alloy wheels, housing Rosso callipers with carbon-ceramic brake discs and shod with Pirelli P Zero tyres, the 599 is perhaps the most handsome V12 GT Ferrari since the Daytona, designed, as they were, to be both beautiful and monstrously capable. A true GT car should raise the odd eyebrow when first introduced and then age gracefully, they should never be vulgar and we wonder how the aggressive coachwork of the 599’s successors will look in time. This glorious 599 is presented to auction freshly serviced with some 29,353 miles, its dealer handbooks, a well stamped service book and advisory free MOT Certificate valid until May 2025. It's also accompanied by the original toolkit in its tan leather case, a car cover and we are pleased to confirm the Cherished Registration Number V12 FSH is generously included in the sale.Specification Make: FERRARI Model: 599 GTB FIORANO Year: 2006 Chassis Number: ZFFFD60C000149552 Registration Number: V12 FSH Transmission: Automatic Engine Number: 109009 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 28000 Miles Make: RHD Interior Colour: Crema LeatherClick here for more details and images

SPOILUM (ACTIVE 1774-1805)Portrait of a Western Man in a Chinese LandscapeOil and silver on reverse of glass, framed. 61cm (24in) high x 45.7cm (18in) wide.Footnotes:史貝霖(活躍於1774-1805) 在中國風景中的西方男子 玻璃鏡畫 有框Provenance: a Swedish private collectionMartyn Gregory, London來源: 瑞典私人收藏倫敦古董商Martyn GregoryPublished, Illustrated and Exhibited: Martyn Gregory, Merchants and Mariners: Catalogue 98, London, 2018-2019, p.97, no.97. 展覽著錄: Martyn Gregory,《Merchants and Mariners: Catalogue 98》,倫敦,2018-2019年,第97頁,編號97The Chinese export artist known to Westerners as Spoilum, is renowned today for his oil portraits on canvas, painted in Canton (modern Guangzhou) between 1785 and 1805. However, it is evident that he was earlier engaged in painting reverse-glass portraits of Western merchants, depicting them either standing or seated in a style reminiscent of the English portrait artist Arthur Devis; often with a river landscape in the background. His earliest known work is a reverse-glass portrait of Captain Thomas Fry, dated 1774. For similar reverse-glass portraits that share compositional elements with the present picture, see also Martyn Gregory, Catalogue 81, London, 2005-2006, no.117, and Catalogue 78, London, 2002, no.108. Another example can be found at the Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight (acc.no.LL 8824).In the current portrait, a young man, likely a merchant trading in Canton, wears a dark blue coat over a cream waistcoat, holding his stick and hat in his extended right hand. He stands on a path bordered by rocks and flowers, beside a tree overlooking a river, where a Chinese official's boat is anchored. A pheasant and a parakeet appear in the sky above. For further details about Spoilum's portraiture, see P.Conner, 'The Enigma of Spoilum and the Origins of China Trade Painting,' in The Magazine Antiques, March 1998, vol.CLIII, p.418, no.3.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 16

Castilian school. 16th century.‘Temperance’ and “Justice”.Pair of carved, walnut wood reliefs. 47,5 x 42,5 cm. each. This pair of incredible quadrangular white walnut wood reliefs representing Temperance and Justice must have originally belonged to a liturgical piece of furniture which would also have contained the other two Cardinal Virtues, i.e. Fortitude and Prudence. It is most likely that they were part of a set of Renaissance pews - without categorically ruling out their belonging to a cupboard or a door - as representations of the Virtues were quite common in the pews of this period due to their moralising character, as we must bear in mind that the moral conduct of the Human Being rested on them.Given the technical characteristics of both reliefs, the remarkable skill and finesse with which they are carved, and the fact that sculpting in walnut and the making of pews and other ecclesiastical furniture were not commissioned from just any master, it seems clear that their sculptor was a relevant sculptor of the Castilian school and that they were carved around the second third of the 16th century. Both Virtues have been depicted, as is often the case, as women of classical appearance, almost like Roman matrons or noble maidens with sophisticated headdresses. They wear wide, fine garments completely covered with small pleats that make the edges of the garments extremely faceted. The wet cloth technique is simulated in some areas, with which not only the plastic and volumetric values of the reliefs are highlighted but also the voluptuousness of the women, since through these fine garments the rounded forms of their bodies are suggested. As a general rule, they are worked in bas-relief, but in the most relevant areas, such as the heads, hands and attributes, the relief acquires greater volume, close to being in the round, but never quite reaching it.The heads are small, round and have expressive faces, serious in the case of Justice and more serene in that of Temperance. They have slanting eyes, carved with great detail both in the iris and the eyelids, and above them, sharp curved eyebrows that give them personality, as well as a chiaroscuro in the area of the eye sockets that enhances their volume. The facial features comprise smooth foreheads, broad, elongated noses, marked nasolabial folds, small open mouths with thick lips and bulging cheekbones. The ears are not visible due to the elaborate headdresses that almost completely obscure their hair. In the case of Justice, we can see a scarf that leaves free a couple of snaky locks that slide down her temples, and a ribbon that the anonymous sculptor models with great skill, creating a series of curves and counter-curves while displaying it from different profiles with multiple folds. For her part, Temperance also wears a kind of veil that leaves free a pair of locks of similar characteristics to those of Justice. Above the veil, the end of which seems to be moved by the wind, is a winged head of a putti, one of the most characteristic elements of Renaissance vocabulary. This same putti is found on Justice's neckline, almost like a brooch. Finally, Temperance wears a kind of cloth hanging from the ends of the buckles that cover her ears. Both women are perfectly identified both by the Latin signs carved on the upper part of the panels - ‘TEMPERATIA’ and ‘IVSTICIA’- and by the attributes they hold in their hands. Thus Justice elegantly holds a scale in her right hand - the allegory of the equality with which she must act - while in her left hand she wields a sword - the symbol of the strength with which she imposes herself - whose long blade occupies the entire height of the panel. Temperance, on the other hand, is seen pouring water from a jug over a wide goblet filled with wine in order to temper what is too stimulating. The conception of the two figures differs from each other, for while Temperance presents a closed composition, withdrawn in on itself, as well as having a calmer character as it embodies the Virtue it is representing, Justice is conceived with an open composition -see the arms- and shows a more decisive and dynamic spirit. Both differences in state, tranquillity and impetuosity, can be seen in another specific detail that they both share: the way in which the wind moves or waves the scarf or ribbon that covers their hair. We would like to thank Dr. Javier Baladrón, doctor in Art History, for the identification and cataloguing of this work.

A Höchst figure of Harlequine from the Commedia dell'Arte, circa 1752Modelled by Johann Christoph Ludwig von Lücke, standing on pedestal with tree-stump support at the rear holding a slapstick in her left hand, wearing a gilt-edged green hat, red-striped bodice edged in gilding and with a green bow, puce dress reserved with stripes, and yellow shoes with green bows, the pedestal moulded with a reserved panel at the front, flanked by puce flower garlands to the sides and trailing bell-flowers to the corners, 20.6cm high, wheel mark in iron-red (very minor damage)Footnotes:Literature:Reber, Horst,Höchster Porzellan des 18. The principal inspiration for these figures originated in the gardens of the baroque Palais Schönborn in Vienna, wherein statues depicting commedia dell'arte figures on similar pedestals as those of the present Harlequine were built at the beginning of the 18th century for its owner, Friedrich Karl von Schönborn. Lücke may well have been brought to the Palais Schönborn at the behest of the Elector of Mainz, Johann Friedrich Karl von Ostein (r. 1743-1763), who had granted the privilege for founding the Höchst factory in 1746 and was also the nephew of Friedrich Karl von Schönborn. A comparable figure of Harlequine is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, acc. no. 2017.77, formerly in the collections of Carl Jourdan, Frankfurt; Emma Budge, Hamburg; Otto Blohm, Hamburg; and Eduard Pflueger, New York. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

These recent works attempt to document the urban-scape scenes of Kampala, knowing full well that these hybrid minibus/taxis, synonymous with Kampala, will soon be no more.

Triumph was actually taken over by the BSA group in 1953, however, the two companies kept up a fierce rivalry until they began to share designs in the late 1960s in an effort to ward off the onslaught of the Japanese manufacturers. The TR25W Trophy was Triumph's street/scrambler model, a style that was popular in the USA and was launched to replace the Tiger Cub. The bike was based on the BSA B25 range and was built at the Small Heath BSA plant rather than at Triumph’s Meriden factory. This 1967 Trophy, from a deceased estate, was first registered in the UK in 1980, possibly spending its early years in the USA where most of Triumph’s production was exported to at the time. Bought by the enthusiast owner in 1981, it has been stored in a dry garage together with his small collection of mainly 1960s and 1970s Triumphs and BSAs. Restored, keeping a good degree of originality, the Trophy has been stood for a number of years and will therefore require some level of recommissioning. It is being offered with a current V5C. First registered in March 1969, it was bought by the vendor in 1995 from what appears to have been its first owner. Not much is known of its history, but it is obviously an unfinished project supplied with a number of parts including a new Amal carb, alloy mudguards, upswept exhaust, seat, repainted fuel tank and rebuilt wheels. Assembled loosely for the photos, it appears to have most of the major parts. An interesting project to either restore to standard or form the basis of a special off-road model or cafe racer.
