HERGE: (1907-1983) Georges Prosper Remi. Belgian cartoonist, creator of The Adventures of Tintin. T.L.S., Herge, one page, 4to, Brussels, 19th September 1974, to Alan Lichter at the University of Kansas, on the attractive printed stationery of Studios Herge and featuring an image of Tintin and Snowy. Herge thanks his correspondent for their kind opinion of his work, remarking ‘I’m grateful for what you’re doing to make your pupils share it’ and further writing ‘Of course, I’ll be happy to get from time to time news from you and to follow, from far away, the progresses of your course’ before concluding ‘Under separate cover, I send you some sketches (aren’t they called “roughs”?): they show that, under the apparent coolness of the finished drawings, there is a long research for the right line’. About EXAlan Lichter (1931-2013) American Professor of English, Children’s Literature and Poetry Writing at the University of Kansas.
O'NEILL EUGENE: (1888-1953) American playwright, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1936. An interesting A.L.S., Eugene O'Neill, to two sides of a correspondence card, Le Plessis, Saint-Antoine-du-Rocher, 19th September n.y. (1929), to [Maurice] Bourgeois. O'Neill informs his correspondent that he has signed the papaers that they had sent, explaining 'I have put down as my address care of the American Play Co. It is possible I may have to return to America before long and that address will always reach me. Moreover, since the agreement between us for "The Hairy Ape" translation was made through that agency my contract with them requires that all royalty payments should be made to them for me and cannot be made directly to me'. O'Neill continues to confirm that he will be happy to pay his share of the business expenses that have been incurred, and further writes 'As for the matter of an advance royalty, as you say I should have spoken sooner. But it was to your advantage and protection as well as mine to ask for one. But of course, if it is not customary, that explains matters. I think it should be made customary though, since it is such a general rule in other countries and is such a good protection for dramatists and translators'. The playwright also expresses his regret at not being able to get to Paris as he has to complete some work which must be sent to New York, and concludes his letter by remarking 'I certainly hope with you that "The Ape" may succeed and make some money. All I meant was that it is the sort of play, as results elsewhere have proved, that it is a big gamble as far as reaching any wide public is concerned. It is either liked very much - or not liked at all'. A letter of good content to O'Neill's young French translator. One heavy vertical fold to the centre, otherwise about VGThe Hairy Ape, O'Neill's expressionist play of 1922, was translated by Maurice Bourgeois and the first French production was staged at the Theatre des Arts in Paris in 1929. However, the work involved for Bourgeois took its toll on his mental health and newspaper reports of the time (under headlines including 'Dramatist Goes Mad') stated 'Bourgeois......went mad following the dress rehearsal.....his friends believe that the highly emotional title role of the play he translated played a part. At all events, Bourgeois went into a dressing room of the theatre after the play and put on the rough clothes and cap of the hairy ape......A director of the theatre found him wandering about the corridors in those clothes, and on speaking to him Bourgeois became violent and smashed up furniture. He then climbed on to the roof and walked about there.......finally, at 1.30 in the morning, they called in the police'.
ZOLA EMILE: (1840-1902) French novelist. A.L.S., Emile Zola, one page, 8vo, Boulevard Saint-Germain, Paris, 11th September 1865, to [Adolphe Belot] ('Cher monsieur'), on the printed stationery of Librairie L. Hachette et Compagnie, in French. Ne m'en voulez pas' (Translation: 'I had to give part of the article to Mr. Daudet who is my collaborator at Salut Public. I believe you to be his friend, and I hope that his proximity will not frighten you too much. We had to share the praise, a little reluctantly. Do not blame me'). With blank integral leaf. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VGAdolphe Belot (1829-1890) French playwright and novelist. Ernest Daudet (1837-1921) French journalist, novelist and historian, the elder brother of Alphonse Daudet.Between January and December 1865, Emile Zola published a series of articles in Le Salut public which he brought together the following year to form Mes Haines ('My Hatreds'). In the collection Zola provided 'literary and artistic talks' preceded by an introductory text laying out the main principles of his aesthetics. On 7th September, shortly before this letter, he devoted an article to two writers, Adolphe Belot and Ernest Daudet. 1865 was also the year in which Zola's sordid autobiographical novel La Confession de Claude was published. Attracting the attention of the police, it resulted in Hachette dismissing Zola from his job in the sales department of the publishers.

BIDEN JOE: (1942- ) American politician who has served as President of the United States since 2021. T.L.S., Joe, one page, slim 4to, Wilmington, Delaware, 25th April 1987, to Adam, on printed stationery bearing the slogan Biden for President at the head. Biden writes, in part, 'In the next few days I will be announcing my candidacy for President of the United States. Since I have spent so much time in New Jersey over the years on speaking engagements and family vacations, I feel like your state is my second home. I have a deep understanding of the needs and problems facing the people of New Jersey. Before I announce, I would like to share with you some of the reasons I seek the Presidency', and continues to invite his correspondent to lunch on 1st May at the Sheraton Poste Inn in Cherry Hill, where Congressman Jim Florio will also join them. Some light, minor creasing, VGBiden formally declared his candidacy for the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination on 9th June 1987, and was considered a strong candidate. However, not all went to plan, and on 23rd September 1987 Biden withdrew his candidacy, declaring that it had been overrun by 'the exaggerated shadow' of his past mistakes.

2000 Mercedes-Benz CLK 230 Kompressor Elegance Transmission: automaticMileage:75000Historically, the E-Class is Mercedes-Benz' best-selling model, with more than 13 million sold by 2015. The first E-Class series was originally available as a four-door saloon, five-door estate, two-door coupé and two-door convertible. From 1997 to 2009, the equivalent coupé and convertible were sold under the Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class nameplate which was actually based on the mechanical underpinnings of the smaller C-Class while borrowing the styling and some powertrains from the E-Class. A trend continued with the C207 E-Class coupé/convertible which was sold parallel to the W212 E-Class saloon and estate models. With the latest incarnation of the E-Class released for the 2017 model year, all body styles share the same W213 platform. The coupé (C207) was first shown at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, while the convertible (A207) was unveiled at the 2010 North American International Auto Show.Presented well in metallic blue with grey leather interior, this CLK 230 was purchased in Switzerland as a right hand drive example, costing SFr 82,446, the car boasts extras such as leather, electric heated memory seats, parking sensors, windbreak, air conditioning and rain sensing wipers. Used in Switzerland, as the previous owners summer car, until 2019 when it relocated to the UK, this car was also exclusively serviced by the supplying main agents Procar in Davos. Since its arrival in the UK, the car has covered a mere 4,000 miles and it was always garaged in the previous owners garage in Switzerland and the UK. Accompanied by the original supplying invoice, an MoT test certificate until August 2024, the original brochure and every servicing invoice from new, this is a fabulous, sporty and classy convertible. 1967 Airstream Overlander 26ft Transmission: manualMileage:Airstream is an American brand of caravans which are easily recognized by the distinctive shape of their rounded and polished aluminium coachwork. This body shape dates back to the 1930s and is based on designs created by Hawley Bowlus. Airstream trailers and recreational vehicles are manufactured in Jackson Center, Ohio. The company, now a division of Thor Industries, employs more than 800 people, and is the oldest in the industry. Airstreamers are a group who share a community spirit because of their common love of the trailers. In the early 1950s, Airstream company founder Wally Byam began leading groups of owners on travels to many parts of the world, where the towed trailers were quite a remarkable sight. Photos taken of the trailers in front of many famous tourist sites were common. This promoted a mystique which surrounded Airstreams that persists to this day. This well preserved 1967 26ft Overlander by Airstream International is presented here in its iconic polished aluminium found outside and within. Offering modern creature comforts after an interior restoration which kept the retro feel but introduced modern plug points and electrics, cookers/hob and lighting. The seating/dining area is trimmed in red to match the diner style and the food preparation area is equally as impressive. The kitchen surface is finished in a light beech and complemented with wipe clean white doors to form a space more commonly seen in high-end domestic kitchens than in anything on wheels. Cooking equipment is a combined oven/grill and a four-burner hob. Ample storage/cupboard space is available as you would expect. Sleeping six with a double bed to one end and the seating area converting to bunk beds. This twin UK axle caravan has been recently residing at the vendors address in the UK but, due to work commitments, no longer used and thus presents the ideal opportunity to own and tour the UK or Europe. Pull up at a nice, secluded spot, open a bottle of wine and watch the world go by in the coolest way to camp.Guide Price £30,000-£40,000
A COPPER-INLAID BRONZE RITUAL WINE VESSEL AND COVER, HU, EASTERN ZHOU DYNASTYPlease note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價Expert’s note: For further research and a comparative analysis with published examples in major institutions, see Charles D. Weber, Chinese Pictorial Bronze Vessels of the Late Chou Period. Part III, published in Artibus Asiae, volume 29, number 2/3, 1967, pages 115-192. In this publication, the author provides a comprehensive analysis of pictorial bronze vessels from the late Zhou period and suggests that this type of decoration originated from Huixian, Henan province, from the 6th into the early 5th century BC.To properly evaluate the current lot, it is essential to compare it with the related examples found in the Fogg Art Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (see literature comparison). These institutions possess vessels attributed to significant tombs in the vicinity of Huixian. These vessels share several identical pictorial elements with the present lot, as illustrated in the accompanying diagram. These pictorial elements also serve as a basis for dating the current lot, as referenced in fig. 70 of Weber’s work, where the sinuous feline pictograms suggest a manufacture date of 500 B.C.Furthermore, page 151 of Weber's work highlights a pertinent observation. During the late Zhou period, pictorial decoration on these types of vessels was arranged irrespective of the placement of handles. Consequently, handles were often affixed over a portion of the pictorial representations, partially covering the design. This alignment further strengthens the connection of the present lot to the published examples, suggesting that it is not only closely related, originating from the same period and region, but also having a strong possibility of it originating from a neighboring site.China, late 6th-early 5th century BC. Superbly cast, the globular body supported on a tall spreading foot and rising to a waisted neck with a flared mouth, the shoulder set with two small lug handles. The body is finely inlaid with copper in five registers depicting geometrically arranged designs of pairs of birds, felines, and deer within lozenge borders which also encircle the foot, the body further interspersed by elaborate ruyi-like designs, the mouth and rim of the cover with line borders. The similarly decorated domed cover surmounted by a loop finial. The vase has retained its original cover for well over two millennia, which makes it exceedingly rare.Provenance: From a noted private collection in Southern California, USA.Condition: Excellent condition, commensurate with age. Some were exhibited at the New York Armoury Show and some sold, but alas, Doug died before uncovering the complete story of them.Condition ReportFramed: 19.5 x 14cmTime staining with light surface dirt. The upper right corners of both have been cut diagonally and are missing. Not viewed out of glazed frames.
A set of three Masonic tracing boards, early 20th century, each with stylised imagery, printed on board, 60.5 x 30cm (3) Tracing boards are meant to represent the allegorical journey of a Freemason, beginning in the material realm with the tools of the trade, transcending up the ladder toward the temple, indicative of the second stage following on as a natural development of the first. The second degree set within the temple is meant to emphasise the fellowship found within, and the eventual continuation of the journey deeper into the temple, and the mysteries found within. The third tracing board, with skull and coffin, is rarely seen, partly because the ritual it entails is rarely performed today, but also that those who have undergone it, rarely share any knowledge about it, or even confirm its existence.Condition Reportminor age and rubbing - see detailed photos. Each board 60.5 x 30cmEach frame - 64 x 33.5cm
