Great Britain - KGV : (SG 456a) 1935 Silver Jubilee 2½d, the famous Prussian blue, superb mint small hinge trace full fresh original gum example (light historical pencil annotation), fabulous fresh colour, perfs and centering. Unusually we've been fortunate to handle probably more than our fair share(!) of this rare colour error stamp within the past five years. Barely an example encountered is in top condition, most come with minor imperfection / blemish. This is the second time that we have handled this example, the first time realising precisely £10,000=. No faults example, accompanied by clear 1956 BPA Expert Committee photo-certificate signed by philatelic 'glitterati' Robson Lowe amongst others. As fresh today, 64 years later. Accompanied by superb colour 'normal' for comparison. Magnificent and RARE Cat £12000 (image available) [US2]

M. H. Hailes, Royal Artillery, who specialised in the hazardous task of flying light, slow, cramped and unarmed Auster spotter planes over hostile territory in Palestine, Malaya, and Korea in the face of determined opposition and dangerous circumstances but nonetheless always attempted to engage enemy targets, efforts that also saw him twice Mentioned in Despatches; in Korea he identified and fixed Chinese artillery positions for counter-bombardments by 1 Commonwealth Division or by US heavy guns Distinguished Service Order, E.II.R., silver-gilt and enamel, reverse undated, with integral top riband bar; 1939-45 Star; War Medal 1939-45; General Service 1918-62, 3 clasps, Palestine 1945-48, Malaya, Cyprus, additional clasps unofficially attached, with M.I.D. oak leaf (Capt. J. M. H. Hailes. R.A.); Korea 1950-53, 1st issue (Major J. M. H. Haines [sic]. D.S.O. R.A.); U.N. Korea 1950-54, unnamed as issued, generally very fine and better (6) £6,000-£8,000 --- D.S.O. London Gazette 24 April 1953: ‘In recognition of gallant and distinguished flying services in Korea’. The original recommendation states: ‘Major Hailes has been in command of 1903 Air OP Flight RAF since July 1952. He joined the Flight at a time when two pilots had been shot down and two others had changed. There was therefore concern at the possibility of the operational efficiency of the Flight dropping considerably. In the event this did not happen and, in fact, the reverse was the case as the Flight went from strength to strength. The credit for this rests entirely with Major Hailes. From the very outset he was complete master of the situation and displayed leadership of the highest order in all spheres but most particularly from the operational aspect. He himself did far more flying than his duties as Flight Commander called for and it was characteristic of his him that he would always use the most doubtful aircraft leaving the others for the remaining pilots. His magnificent example, efficiency and courage during this difficult period was a great inspiration to the more experienced pilots and filled the younger ones with unshakeable confidence. While going to great pains to train his younger pilots he carried, at the same time, an even greater share of the operational sorties than would have been his in a normal situation. He has personally flown 125 sorties and conducted 166 shoots with guns of the Divisional and Corps artillery. In doing this he has been responsible for inflicting many casualties of both men and equipment on the enemy. The whole Division has the greatest respect and admiration for the Air OP Flight and this is a direct result of the magnificent leadership, courage and conscientiousness consistently displayed by Major Hailes throughout the period. His work in all spheres has been far above what one would expect in the normal line of duty and I recommend services of such a high order be recognised in the form of an appropriate award.’ M.I.D. London Gazette 7 January 1949 (Palestine) ‘In recognition of gallant and distinguished service in Palestine during the period 27 March to 26 September 1947.’ M.I.D. London Gazette 27 April 1951: ‘In recognition of gallant and distinguished service in Malaya during the period 1 July to 31 December 1950.’ John Martin Hunter ‘Jack’ Hailes was born on 27 January 1920 in Maymyo, a pleasant hill station in central Burma where, in the early 1920’s, George Orwell served as Assistant District Superintendent of Police. As a young boy he lived in Mandalay, where his father was a District Superintendent of Railways. He was educated at Cheltenham College, his father’s alma mater. As war approached, Hailes decided to join the regular army and entered the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich in January 1939. As war became inevitable, the pace of his training was accelerated and he was sent to 122 Officer Cadet Training Unit in August. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant, Royal Artillery, on 9 December 1939, with regimental seniority from 4 November 1939, and was posted as a Troop Commander to 51st Anti-tank Regiment, 51st (Highland) Division, which landed in France in January 1940 to join the British Expeditionary Force. The Battle of France On 19 April 1940 the 51st Division was detached from the rest of the B.E.F. It was put under French command and moved to a section of the Franco-German frontier just south of Luxembourg and in front of one of the most powerful and impressive showpiece underground fortresses of the Maginot Line, the Ouvrage Hackenburg, which had been inspected by King George VI. The intent was to stiffen Allied defences at the northern end of the Maginot Line in case of a German attack on the western front during the invasion of Norway. France had briefly invaded German Saar in this sector in September 1940 when its ally Poland was attacked. Since Norway was now under German attack, the French High Command deemed it prudent to anticipate possible enemy action on the Western Front. The Germans did not oblige the French generals by attacking their Maginot defence works. They simply outflanked them and by the end of May had trapped the entire Allied northern forces in the Dunkirk beachhead. Meanwhile, the French desperately tried to form a new defence line along the River Somme in Picardy. Fortress Hackenburg was harassed by German forces but never directly attacked. The 51st Division was withdrawn from Lorraine and moved by train and road to Picardy. It saw much action assisting the French in their futile attempts to repulse the Germans from the Somme bridgeheads at Abbeville. After further clashes at Huchenneville, the Division was reduced to half its fighting strength by 6 June and was desperately short of supplies, especially ammunition. The only remaining option was evacuation by sea. 154 Brigade was rescued from Le Havre and Cherbourg but the rest of the Division was encircled. The Royal Navy landed at the small port of St Valery-en-Caux near Dieppe on 10 June to try to snatch as many men as possible. Unfortunately, the retreat of 51th Division to the coast had been held up, and a thick fog descended during the night of 11-12 which made it too risky for ships to enter and leave the port. All artillery ammunition had run out and the Division was forced to surrender to overwhelming German forces on 12 June. Hailes joined some 10,000 men who were marched off to prisoner-of-war camps in the Reich. Hailes was promoted to Lieutenant on 9 June 1941 and remained a Prisoner of War in various camps in Poland, Germany and Austria until 13 April 1945. After his return to England, Hailes was assigned to a number of refresher courses and training appointments to prepare him for his promotion to Captain on 1 July 1946. Northern Italy, Egypt, Palestine and Malaya Early in 1946 Hailes decided that he wished to become a Royal Artillery Air Observer. The tethered kite balloons of the Great War had been very effective in acquiring targets far behind the frontlines and directing artillery to neutralise them, but balloo...

The tethered kite balloons of the Great War had been very effective in acquiring targets far behind the frontlines and directing artillery to neutralise them, but balloons were useless for mobile warfare. They were replaced by small light aircraft, fitted with radios. Controlling artillery from the air was a specialised and technical skill, which the RAF had no interest in developing. However, since the days of Trenchard, the RAF hierarchy had insisted that anything that flew ‘belonged to them’. The agreed compromise was that the Air Observation Post (AOP) units themselves were part of the RAF, as were the aircraft and the more skilled members of the ground crew. The artillery would provide all the observers, and the non-technical ground staff. To be an air observer, Hailes had first to learn to fly a...
A rare Battle of Britain Combat Report written in pencil by Flying Officer (Pilot) E.J. Willcox of 72 Squadron Royal Air Force and dated 15.8.40, the Report reads: On receipt of order to attack I selected an HE111 bomber & observed the rear gunner firing at me. As I was at a range of about 600 yds I put my bead a little above the rear gunner of the Heinkel. After a short burst I observed no more enemy fire from this machine. I closed to point blank range & fired at the port engine until a black smoke poured from it & the u/c dropped. I then transferred my attention to the starboard engine and fired until black smoke appeared & the E/A glided down toward the water. My windscreen was splashed with oil from the engines of the Heinkel. As I had expended all my ammunition I returned to base. signed EJ Wilcox F/O. NOTE: Flying Officer Edgar John Willcox participated in the Dunkirk evacuation destroying a Ju87 and claimed a share of a He59, then on the 31st August 1940 his Spitfire P9457 was shot down and he was killed in action Condition ReportVery fragile paper
A pair of George II mahogany hall chairsCirca 1750, each with a shell back centred by an oval tablet painted with a crest depicting a cockerel, above a scroll carved scallop shell seat, on scroll eared cabriole front legs, with a splayed and shaped rear end support and waved stretchers, each chair approximately: 50cm wide x 57cm deep x 99cm high, (19 1/2in wide x 22in deep x 38 1/2in high) (2)Footnotes:An almost identical pair of hall chairs to the present lot sold Christie's, London, 13th November 2018, The Collector, lot 20. Other closely related examples include; a pair of virtually identical chairs, possibly even from the same set as the above, previously from the collection of the Earls of Guildford; a pair of chairs made for Francis Basset, Esq. (d. 1769) at Tehidy Park, Cornwall (sold Christie's, New York, 18 October 2005, lot 450 and again Christie's, London, 18 June 2008, Simon Sainsbury, 'The Creation of an English Arcadia', lot 75); a set of eight supplied to St Giles's House, Dorset (illustrated in A. Coleridge, Chippendale Furniture, London, 1968, fig. 366); and finally two pairs of chairs from the Rovensky collection sold Sotheby's, New York, 5-6 April 2006, lots 419 and 420.The offered chairs follow a hall chair design, with a similarly naturalistic carved back, originally published by Matthias Darly (d. 1780) between 1750 and 1751. Evidently, due to the popularity of the form, this drawing was later re-published in the 1766 Chair Maker's Guide by 'Robert Mainwaring Cabinet-Maker and Others', see C. Gilbert, The Early Furniture Designs of Matthias Darly, Furniture History, 1975, p. 37 and pl.'s 39 & 69. In 1753 Chippendale, who was at the time in the process of compiling the first edition of The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, (1754), chose Darly, who quipped about himself as being 'Professor of Ornament to the Academy of Great Britain', to engrave ninety-eight of the total one hundred and forty-seven plates to be ultimately included therein. And it seems very likely that Chippendale imitated or rather adapted his own garden seat pattern, plate XXIV in the third edition (1762), directly from Darly's model. Both designs derive from the Italian Renaissance sgabello chair. Although such hall chairs are often associated with painted grotto chairs since they share a related organic design that, as in this instance, incorporates the scallop-shell form which is representative of the goddess Venus's birth, these hall chairs were never intended to be used outdoors. Hall chairs were usually part of a large set of eight or more intended for the entrance hall and with their coats-of-arms or crests (as in this case) they were as much about dynastic display as for practical use. Chippendale's description of such chairs states: 'They may be made either of Mahogany, of any other Wood, and painted, and have commonly wooden Seats. If the Carving of the Chairs in Plate XVIII was thought superfluous, the Outlines may be preserved, and they will look very well... Arms, if required, may be put to those Chairs'.Among the numerous families documented as having a cockerel for their crest or charge appear the following surnames: Sinclair, Crow, Rigg, Williams, Cockridge, King, Cox, Allcock and Ingram. However, unfortunately the only distinguishing feature of the particular depiction of a cockerel on the offered lot is that he is armed and most likely represented in his proper tinctures. Nonetheless it has not proven possible to discover which specific historic family commissioned this pair of hall chairs nor in fact to which family these directly relate. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. A pair of George III mahogany urns and pedestalsCirca 1785, each urn with a fluted and oak-leaf carved lid surmounted by a pineapple finial, above a reeded, beaded and berried stiff-leaf clasped body with a Vitruvian scroll and honeysuckle frieze, over a guilloche collar, enclosing a lead-lined interior, the pedestal with a gadrooned edge above an acanthus frieze, with a door below surmounted by scrolled flowers and foliage centred by a palmette, one pedestal enclosing a lead-lined interior and the other enclosing one lead-lined drawer, one shelf and a door, 48cm wide x 48cm deep x 175cm high, (18 1/2in wide x 18 1/2in deep x 68 1/2in high) (2)Footnotes:Some designs for closely comparable Neoclassical urns and pedestals to the offered lot, which were first published posthumously in 1787, are illustrated in G. Hepplewhite, The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, pl.'s 35 & 36, New York, 1969. Between 1775 and 1785 a pair of urns and pedestals with similarly carved ornament, including almost identical Vitruvian scroll friezes and gadrooned pedestal top edges, were provided by the Gillows firm for Lulworth Castle, Dorset. The latter being the family home of the Welds, who also resided at Stoneyhurst in Lancashire. These examples feature in S. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Vol. I, pl.'s 346 & 347, p. 310.A pair of mahogany knife urns, dating to circa 1790, which also share many characteristics in common with the present urns were bequeathed to the Victoria and Albert Museum by Dr T.R.C. Whipham through Barclays Bank Ltd. in 1945. One appears in M. Tomlin, Catalogue of Adam Period Furniture, Victoria and Albert Museum, 1972, London, W/2, p. 190.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. AESOPFables with His Life: in English, French and Latin... by Francis Barlow, additional engraved title, full-page engraved arms of the Earl of Devonshire, 31 engraved plates by Thomas Dudley after Francis Barlow, one full-page etched illustration of Aesop surrounded by animals and birds ('See here how natures books...'), and 110 half-page engraved illustrations, a few plates slightly browned, some tears mostly in lower or upper margins (text on 4 leaves and 1 engraving affected, but all without loss), CONTEMPORARY BLACK MOROCCO BY BARLOW'S AESOP BINDER, elaborately tooled in gilt, the sides decorated with leafy tendrils and various floral tools, emanating from a small Greek urn, with borders of drawer-handle tools forming connecting geometric pattern, spine in 8 compartments with raised bands and 3 flower tool designs, some small patches worn, spine slightly faded and joints rubbed in places, some paper repairs to marbled endpapers [ESTC R22991], folio (363 x 235mm.), H. Hills Jun., for Francis Barlow, and are to be sold by Chr. Wilkinson [et al], 1687Footnotes:FINELY BOUND BY 'BARLOW'S AESOP BINDER' FOR PRESENTATION: A PREVIOUSLY UNRECORDED LARGE PAPER COPY. 'From this bindery, active in the 1680s and 1690s, come three handsome presentation copies of Barlow's Aesop, two of them now in the British Library... [and] Pepys's copy at Magdalene College' (Howard M. Nixon, English Restoration Bindings, 1972, p.40). This fourth example can be attributed to the shop through comparison with the dedication copy to the Earl of Devonshire at Chatsworth, now in the British Library (Nixon, op. cit. no. 99 and plate 99). The combination of a floral and geometrical pattern is common to both bindings, and many of the same tools are used. The sides feature the same leafy tendrils and smaller ornamental and flower head tools, whilst the spines share two floral compartmental designs along with the superscript letter 's' in 'Barlow's'. The Cracherode copy in the British Library also features some of the same tools.Barlow's edition of Aesop, self-financed and illustrated, was first published in 1666, but most copies were destroyed when his shop, the Golden Eagle, was burned down in the Great Fire that year. The present second edition, considered the culmination of Barlow's work in book illustration, was the first to contain the 31 fine plates illustrating Aesop's life, and the quatrains by Aphra Behn which were engraved in place of Thomas Philpott's captions within the 110 illustrations. The present copy includes the so-called 'indecent' plate 17 which is often missing.Provenance: UK private collection. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson A.R.A (1889-1946)Banking at 4,000 Feet (Black 20) Lithograph, 1917, on laid paper, signed, dated and numbered 65 in pencil, from the edition of 200, published by the Stationery Office, London, as part of the series Britain's Efforts and Ideals: Making Aircraft, with wide margins, in good condition, framedImage 402 x 315mm. (16 x 12 3/8in.);Sheet 510 x 398mm. (20 1/8 x 15 5/8in.)Footnotes:Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson was one of the great printmakers of the early twentieth century and was held in high esteem as a chronicler of modern warfare and creator of modern urban landscapes. His mastery of techniques such as drypoint, etching, lithography and mezzotint, combined with an acute eye for detail and feeling for composition, enabled him to produce images which displayed great technical skill, whilst evoking a strong sense of place and emotion. His prints were often produced in conjunction with his paintings, allowing him to depict the subject from a different perspective. This collection is a cross-section spanning his printmaking career, from dramatic images produced to promote the war effort, to the quiet simplicity of his etchings of the rural British landscape and urban views of Paris, London and New York. Nevinson became an official war artist in 1917 and was commissioned by the Ministry of Information to create six lithographs on the theme of Building Aircraft to be included in the propaganda series The Great War: Britain's Efforts and Ideals. In Banking at 4,000 feet, Nevinson uses variations in tone and steep diagonals to convey the drama and exhilaration of flight and invites the viewer to share the experience of being in the air by placing them in the cockpit. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1954 Ariel 500cc HT5 TrialsRegistration no. GOV 130Frame no. RT265Engine no. (see text)Crankcase Mating Numbers 273•Significant works motorcycle•Famous 'GOV' Ariel factory registration•Restored conditionThe Ariel HT5's competitive specification had been evolved at the Selly Oak factory by Clive Bennett and Sammy Miller, immediately proving so successful that the works team of Ron Langston, Gordon Blakeway, and Miller (on machines registered 'GOV 130', 'GOV 131' and 'GOV 132' respectively) were soon gaining more than Ariel's usual share of Team Awards and outright wins. It is a well-known fact concerning 'works' trials bikes that the factory competitions departments retained certain registration numbers for many years, swapping them between different machines as and when circumstances required. Such is the case with Ariel's famous 'GOV' numbers, confirmed by an illustration on file showing factory rider Norman Vanhouse on 'GOV 130', but which is clearly an earlier un-sprung machine, similar to those used in the early 1950s by Bob Ray and Stan Holmes, etc. There is also a handful of pictures showing Ron Langston in action on an Ariel, registration 'GOV 130', in 1956 through 1958. This HT5 was acquired by the immediately preceding owner at a Sotheby's Hendon Sale in 1996, since when it has been displayed at the odd reunion event but not ridden competitively. Although much of the machine's post-factory history is unrecorded, it was reputedly discovered by Bill Lawless, former editor of Trials & Motocross News, during the 1980s and, given its age, has undoubtedly received a fair amount of mechanical attention. The current vendor purchased 'GOV 130' as Bonhams' Stafford sale in April 2017 (Lot 184). At that time previous owner Lewis Birt advised us that he had carried out minor works to the machine, possibly including the installation of the alloy rims, following its purchase from Alfred Mansell Maddison in 1993. Dave Langston recalls fabricating and fitting the top rear mudguard mounting, similar to his '350' works machine. It should be noted that the engine number 'HT10' is not visible. The engine is stamped '10' to the barrel and '273' - matching crankcase numbers - and it should also be noted that the current V5C incorrectly records the frame number as 'R1265'. As with all lots in the sale, this lot is sold 'as is/where is' and prospective purchasers must satisfy themselves as to this motorcycle's provenance, condition, age, completeness, and originality prior to bidding. Letitia Marion Hamilton RHA (1878-1964) Roundstone Oil on Canvas, 50 x 60cm (19¾ x 23½'') Signed The 1963 edition of the Automobile Association Road Book of Ireland tells us that Roundstone is '[a] busy Connemara fishing village, on the western side of Bertraghboy Bay' with 'a roomy, well-sheltered harbour which is almost landlocked.' When Cloch na Rón, The Stone of the Seals, became Roundstone, something was clearly lost in translation but the beauty and the charm of the place have never been lost. When Letitia Hamilton painted Roundstone, which she did a number of times, she captured Roundstone's unique setting and beauty, unique in that it was founded by Alexander Nimmo, a Scottish engineer, who built roads and harbours along the west coast of Ireland in the 1820s. Nimmo, choosing the spot for its spectacular views, designed and created Roundstone's harbour and, ever since, the village has been a favourite subject for artists including Paul Henry, Jack B Yeats, Gerard Dillon, Nano Reid. From Roundstone's main street, bordering the sea, you can view the Maamturk mountains. From there, you can also see the Twelve Bens. William Makepeace Thackeray visited Roundstone while it was still being built and in his book, published as The Irish Sketch Book in 1843, he wryly noted that the Presbyterian chapel in Roundstone was big enough 'to accommodate all the Presbyterians in Ireland' and described the Franciscan monastery as 'an unpretending little dwelling'. His eye was also captured by '[a] few figures at work in the bog-lands, a red petticoat passing here and there, a goat or two browsing among the stones, or a troop of whitey-brown children, who came out to gaze at the car form the chief society of the road'. Letitia Marion Hamilton, RHA, was born in 1878 in Hamwood House, Dunboyne, Co. Meath, built in 1779 by her ancestor Charles Hamilton. Though she studied under William Orpen, her travels in France, Belgium and Holland and the art she saw there influenced her more. In the 1920s Hamilton visited Italy and Yugoslavia but WWII kept her in Ireland and it was during that time that she began to paint Roundstone. In this particular work Hamilton captures the many delightful aspects of the place. The chosen perspective, of the approach to the town, invites the viewer to follow the road and to enjoy the sea. The day is bright, the shadows suggest afternoon. Rows of houses on the side of the road are crowded together and the road, sea wall, harbour and sky share a muted palette. Clouds and street and buildings, in greys and pale beige, are rendered with those gentle, sensuous, impastoed brushstrokes and palette knife so distinctively Letitia Marion Hamilton. Brighter colours, the green among the rocks in the foreground, the darker green hill and trees behind St Mary's Protestant church and the sea's blue gradations and the small white waves gently breaking provide a lovely contrast and though it's a calm, quiet scene there are some lively and busy touches. On the road through the village, a figure on a horse or donkey and two wooden horse-drawn carts create movement. One empty-looking cart is heading towards us, the other, piled high with turf, is heading up the hill. A lightly-sketched figure, a child probably, is seen on the right by the second cart. In the bay the figure in the row boat provides more movement and the eye is here drawn in a different direction. Inishnee island in Roundstone bay is briefly glimpsed and, beyond that, a stretch of water and, in the distance, on the horizon, more of the County Galway coastline. Hamilton frequently painted in a little van and for this scene it seems she is parked by the old dispensary house, renamed The Fort, on the way into Roundstone where Kate O'Brien lived in the 1950s, later Sting, and the house is now owned by Bill Whelan who says that in Roundstone you're 'so much more conscious of things like the tides and sunrise and sunset'. Over the years Roundstone has always attracted creative individuals and this work by LMH, undated, like much of Hamilton's work, but most likely from the 1940s, captures tide and sunshine and reminds us of Roundstone's unique attractiveness then. And now. Niall MacMonagle, October 2020

A rare German gilt bronze alloy model of a giraffe, possibly 17th century, likely Augsburg or Nuremberg, the animal portrayed with a turned neck and stylised features, 18.5cm highThe present bronze is possibly an early rendition of a giraffe as viewed by European craftsmen. The sloped back, buckled hind legs and elongated face may not have derived from a first-hand encounter with the exotic animal, but instead bear distinct similarities to prints of giraffes that circulated at the time.A direct influence may have been the Icones, by 16th century Swiss naturalist Conrad Gessner, which includes an illustration of a giraffe in an almost identical pose and with similarly pointed features.Exotic animals provided popular subject matter for bronziers and silver smiths in 16th and 17th century Southern Germany, where they were not only seen as collectible curiosities but also used as table ornaments. A well-known example of this tradition is the silver ostrich by Elias Zorer in the Wallace Collection, whose stylised and elongated features share a similar visual language to the present bronze.Condition Report: The giraffe bears the usual minor marks, knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age. There are some areas of loss and wear to the gilding, including to the face and feet. Some dark parts to gilding in the shape of 'drips', to the belly and right haunch. The gilding is quite lustrous and 'oily' overall. The giraffe appears to have been cast in two halves and there is a join running along the belly and back, and up to the neck. The hind legs are quite strongly buckled which is likely the design, though there may possibly have been some bending or damage (if this is the case it is not at all apparent). Overall this unusual and fascinating bronze is in perfectly presentable condition.Condition Report Disclaimer
Fulfillment of Pearse's DreamSigned Twice by PearsePearse, P.H. Sgoil Eanna Limited The original Prospectus and Memorandum of Association, dated 1912, setting out the school's objects and its capital structure, with the names, addresses and descriptions of seven subscribers - Alec Wilson of Belfast, J.P., Co. Down; Joseph T. Dolan, merchant of Ardee; Patrick H. Pearse, St. Enda's College, Rathfarnham, Barrister-at-Law; Michael Smithwick, Barrister-at-Law, Dublin; Stephen J. Barrett, Dublin, Treasurer, Gaelic League; Patrick Doody, Teacher at St. Enda's; and Eamonn O'Toole, also a teacher at St. Enda's. Each of the seven held one share, the company having a capital of £8,000 in shares of £1 each. The Directors are named as Pearse, Dolan, Wilson, Smithwick and Barrett (but not the two teachers); the Secretary pro tem is [the accountant] Donal O'Connor, 13 Westmoreland St., Dublin. The Prospectus includes detailed statements of the cost of acquiring the premises, initial expenditures, cash subscribed, arrangements concerning [its sister school] St. Ita's, salary due to Mr. Pearse, and anticipated revenue and costs, showing a small surplus. It also includes the membership of an Educational Council including Seamus MacManus, Edward Martyn and Shane Leslie.Accompanying this folio is a summary document, Memorandum and Articles of Association of Sgoil Eanna, the Memorandum with the original signatures of five subscribers - Smithwick, Wilson, Pearse, Barrett and Dolan -- and the Articles of Association also signed by the five subscribers including Pearse. Each of these two pages is also signed at foot by Patk MacKenna, Shop Assistant, Ardee, as witness.St. Enda's was founded in 1908 in Cullenswood House, Ranelagh. The present documents were drawn up after its move to larger premises at Rathfarnham in 1910. It must have been a proud day for Pearse when he signed these documents, giving legal status to his plans and dreams for a new kind of Irish education at St. Enda's. Of course there was never any surplus; the school never paid its costs, and Pearse spent much of his time in the ensuing years trying to keep it afloat by various expedients. Nevertheless it remains an important experiment, and an unforgettable experience for many of those who took part. The school remained open until 1935, with State support, and the house and grounds are now a museum and public park. These founding documents are of the first importance for the history of Irish education. Both documents a little bumped at corners, but generally very good.
Important Archive of 19th Century Kilkenny DeedsAn Archive of Documents relating to families and land holdings in County Kilkenny, comprising leases, wills, marriage settlements, legal correspondence and other papers. Mainly 19th century, but a few of the 18th Century (1718 and 1769) and some of the early 20th Century. Many of the papers relate to the family of Hutchinson and to lands at Boolyshea (which they bought from Robert Garrett in 1718), Kiltorcan and Derrynahinch (acquired by fee farm grant) and Jerpoint Church (acquired in 1801 by marriage between Richard Hutchinson and Mary, daughter of Edward Hunt). In a curious deed made of 1801 soon after his marriage, Richard Hutchinson grants to Anastatia and Mary Walsh of Derrynahinch an annuity of £20 on condition that they continue to clothe, maintain, educate, support and keep Mary, Judith, John, Abigail and Thomas Hutchinson otherwise Walsh, "reputed children of said Richard".Through a series of very detailed marriage settlements, it is possible to follow the genealogical details of later Hutchinsons and the families with whom they intermarried, and their financial and land transactions. In a curt letter of 1875 to his solicitors, John Hutchinson of 89 Waterloo Road, Dublin, instructs that two of his daughters "should be cut out and excluded from any share in my will".These documents provide an insight into the affairs of a Kilkenny family of substance, but which did not meet the qualifications for an entry in Burke's Landed Gentry and whose genealogy is therefore not easy to trace. The archive also contains a number of documents relating to other families of Co. Kilkenny during the second half of the 19th century, mainly of the farming class rather than of gentry status. The largest file contains 25 documents of the Phelan family of Ballyragget, 1824-1897.As an archive, w.a.f. (1)

At that time, the museum had no idea of the significance the artist couple would have for the development of photography and its establishment as a constant in the international art world. With their typological approach, the Bechers were not only founders of the 'Düsseldorfer Photoschule' [Düsseldorf School of Photography), but also role models for an entire generation of international artists and photographers working conceptionally. The photographs, taken with a 13 x 18 cm plate-back camera, show the Bechers' characteristic, objective, documentary view of the object. By choosing a raised, distanced location, allowing the entire building to be captured photographically and centred in the image, the photographs are based on a uniform formal structure. Nevertheless, despite any de-subjectification of the objects, the precision of the image capture always brings to light small peculiarities and details that make each photograph an individual portrait of the building shown. When considering the entirety of the photographs presented here, the impression of a certain shared family identity is created, which is not only due to the fact that the buildings share the fate of industrial culture in decline, but is also the result of Bernd and Hilla Becher's craftsmanship as photographers on location and in the darkroom.According to Hilla Becher the originally planned edition of 55 was not entirely realised at the time.We would like to thank Gabriele Conrath-Scholl (Die Photographische Sammlung/SK-Stiftung Kultur, Cologne) for helpful information.
PANORAMA OF LONDON - [Frederick BIRNIE (fl. 1787-92) after Robert BARKER (1739-1806) & Henry Aston BARKER (1774-1856). Panorama of the Thames from the Albion Mills near Blackfriars Bridge. London: 1792-3]. Very large hand-coloured aquatint panorama engraved by Frederick Birnie after Robert and Henry Aston Barker, on Whatman-type wove paper, on six sheets, joined, overall dimensions 430 x 3,310mm., the border with a hand-painted grey Greek key-pattern motif, framed and glazed. VERY LARGE AQUATINT VIEW BASED ON THE WORLD'S FIRST PUBLIC PANORAMA. It was the British painter Robert Barker who first coined, and patented, the term "Panorama" from the Greek "Pan" ("All") and "horama" ("View"). The original panorama for public display, on which this series of aquatints was based, formed a near-360-degree view of London, and was enlarged from Robert Barker's son's original drawings made in 1790 and 1791 on the roof of the Albion Mills (shortly before they burnt down) onto a canvas measuring 1,479 square feet. Having initially been on view in a temporary structure, it was later installed in the world's first purpose-built viewing rotunda, designed by George Mitchell, in Cranbourne Street, Leicester Square, in 1793, where it caused a sensation. Viewers flocked to pay 3 shillings to stand on a central platform under a skylight to get the full immersive experience, perhaps analogous nowadays to that of the first IMAX cinema. The panorama later toured Europe. Seizing an opportunity, Frederick Birnie published his set of six aquatints while the panorama was still on show, for which a prospectus had been issued titled: "Proposals for publishing six elegant aquatinta prints, which, if joined, will represent the City of London and the entire surrounding country." When the six sheets are joined, as here, they form a magisterial view across London, some 11 feet across, with St. Paul's rising above the wharves and rooftops at its centre, and the skyline of towers and spires which Canaletto would have recognised. The architectural details are fascinating enough; but much is added to the scene by the teeming activity of the street in the foreground and Blackfriars Bridge, where elegant carriages, tradespeople and stray dogs share the street; the scene is further enlivened by the many and varied boats and barges on the Thames. Included with the lot is a sturdy wooden custom-made protective case for transportation. Abbey Life 460.
William Hoare of Bath RA (c.1707-1792)Portrait of Mrs Mary Canning (née Petre), half-length, in a white dress and blue wrap; and Portrait of Francis Canning, her husband, half-length, in a plum-coloured coat and gold embroidered waistcoata pair, pastel, circa 174559 x 43cm, in the original carved giltwood frames (2)Provenance: Foxcote House, Ilmington, Warwickshire.Literature: 'Foxcote, The Story of an Estate', Margaret Fisher and Pearl Mitchell. The Catholic family of Canning owned Foxcote in Warwickshire from the 15th century and the house was rebuilt in the early 18th century, probably to the designs of Edward Woodward. William Hoare executed this pair of portraits in the mid-1740s when the sitters were staying in Bath. They share a close similarity with the pair of portraits tentatively identified as William Ffolkes and his wife that now belong to the Bath Preservation Trust at No.1 the Crescent, Bath.Foxcote is at the centre of one of the most impressive and elegant of Cotswold estates, the home to ten generations of the Canning family until the death of Robert Canning in 1848. In the 1960s the estate was purchased by Christopher Boot Holman, heir to Boots the Chemist.Condition report: Mary Canning: Surface dust and dirt and possibly a little light browning to the paper. Some light grey specks of foxing scattered throughout. A few very small surface abrasions, on blue wrap, in background and one or two small scratches in the hair. A pale green line under the nose. Slight bump in the paper in extreme lower right corner. Not seen outside of frame. Francis Canning: A little surface dust and dirt. Some black spots of foxing on collar, lower face and hair. The occasional small spot of dark foxing elsewhere, and some scattered spots of pale foxing in lower areas. Some small losses to the pastel around the left eye and on lips. A very small indent hole from the back, close to left edge three quarters of the way up. A small dark stain in background closeby. A pin hole at each of the lower corners. A rubbed horizontal line across the top of the work level with the top of the head, probably from mount. Not seen outside of frame.

Bowmore 12 Year Old - (1980's) 1x1Ltr A old dumpy bottle of 12-year-old Bowmore. MIRABEAU HONORÉ COMTE DE: (1749-1791) Honoré Gabriel Riqueti. French Writer and an early Leader of the French revolution. President of the National Constituent Assembly 1791. A successful orator who became the voice of the people. An excellent and rare A.L.S., `Mirabeau l´ainé´, (“Mirabeau the Eldest”), one page, small 4to, Paris, 5th October 1790, to M. Dubuisson, in French. Mirabeau expresses his opinion on the issue of Assignats to finance the Republic and states `Dear Sir, your proposal referring to the assignats you honour me with, saying that you think it would be convenient not to produce notes below two hundred pounds but to increase gradually by ten pounds after ten pounds up to 300, and those of 300 up to 400, seem to me very ingenious and deserves to be deepen.´ Mirabeau further comments `It allows to overcome difficulties, but I do not know if it would satisfy all the needs.´ Mirabeau further says that he remains open to any improvement on this proposal and encourages his correspondent to share his views with the Finance Committee. A bold black ink autograph letter by Mirabeau six months before passing away. With blank integral leaf. Small overall age wear and toning, GThe “assignat” was a type of a monetary instrument used during the time of the French Revolution. Mirabeau often attacked Necker's "caisse d'escompte", which had the whole control of the taxes, usurping the Assembly's power of the purse, and for this reason he heartily approved the system of assignats.Mirabeau remains still today a controversial figure, considered by some a leader who almost saved France from the terror, by others a demagogue lacking moral values, or even a traitor in the pay of the enemy.

TINBERGEN JAN: (1903-1994) Dutch Economist, winner of the first Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, 1969. Autograph Manuscript Signed, Jan Tinbergen, nine pages, 4to, n.p., n.d. (c.1979). The manuscript, with a few corrections, is of an essay entitled To What Extent Should the Economy be Controlled Through an Expansion of the Functions of the State in Western Countries? and comprises five sections, stating, in part, ‘Our subject can perhaps best be dealt with by starting with the oversimplified model of the economy used by the old European liberalists. They used to suggest that the free forces of society should be left to themselves. They maintained that a maximum of social welfare will be attained if every individual is striving for maximum personal welfare…..a number of tasks have not been left to individuals, but put into the hands of public authorities…..Some well-known examples are that law and order should be maintained by the sheriff; that private armies are not the solution of the security problem; that a system of competing banks entitled to issue notes does not provide us with the best money, but rather one central bank (system)……It is interesting that the protection of share holders was organised better and earlier in the USA than elsewhere (Securities Exchange Commission) and unveiled cases of bribery in Europe……A few new public tasks are the immediate sequel of one of the most visible technological developments: the mass production of the motor car. It has forced upon us the traffic lights, even to cities which, like Rotterdam, initially refused, as a matter of principle, to introduce them! Similarly the motor car has introduced into the country adoring freedom most of all nations, the United States, speed limits and fines to offenders, quite a bit stiffer than in my country. Indeed it is striking that once the American public has been convinced that certain activities must be regulated they accept a rigorous regulation. What about oil prices? Similar developments are under way concerning pollution of the environment…..So here a complex of regulations is quickly growing also and the criteria for the clean car are rigorous……Under the umbrella of this new legislation the production of various types of anti-pollution equipment will become profitable and hence contribute to new employment opportunities which we badly need…..In addition to the tasks discussed I see two broad areas inside nations which may require public activity in the near future, and one broad area between nations. Inside the nations we must state that so far inflation has not been successfully brought under control……The Dutch government commands two instruments to affect the incomes of two main groups showing high incomes, namely the upper groups of salary earners (both in public administration and in private corporations) and the professions. Higher salaries not subject to collective bargaining can be fixed by the Minister of Social Affairs. Fees of free professions fall under price control and are under the jurisdiction of the Minister of Economic Affairs……Another internal problem our nations are facing is the cultural degeneration our societies are experiencing. Although not an economic problem it is assuming an intensity serious enough to devote some attention to it in this essay: also the economy is suffering from its consequences…….Some of the economically relevant attitudes affected by the cultural crisis are lack of motivation to carry out tasks accepted by contract, fraud and vandalism……It is commonplace to stress the intensified interdependence of nations as a consequence of a series of recent developments. Both food and raw materials have to travel over longer distances than formerly, the former because of population increases around Asia, the latter because of the exhaustion of mineral deposits in developed countries……The increasing income gap constitutes a threat to political stability and a challenge to mankind’s managerial capabilities. The time has come where we must – whether we like it or not – consciously manage the operation of our world society……So far I only dealt with new tasks of the state. But isn’t there already more than enough state activity? Yes, there is. There is over-bureaucratization by states, by other public bodies and by quite a few big private bodies…..Farming out is one of the answers. An interesting recent example in a government machine run largely by social democrats is the GTZ……a state corporation which deals with all bilateral development cooperation of the Federal German Republic’s government…..Unnecessarily complicated schemes also abound……It is natural that these things happen, but then, after some time there should be the obligation of reconsidering the whole scheme. Particular attention should be given to the avoidance of irrelevant concepts’. Signed by Tinbergen at the head of the first page and with a further signature and inscription in his hand to the upper border. VG

The document bears at the heading the written text `The Queen´, stating below `Sancho de Vergara, I have discussed with Johan de Luxan, Knight of my Household, certain matters that he will share with you on my behalf. Eiffel deeply thanks his correspondent, having learned that `..it is your intention to make me obtain a decoration for my works at Pest.. and coming from you it is the highest award for such distinction.´, further saying `If Mr. Krandz remains as Commissioner General till the end, which I hope will be so for the success of the Exhibition and also for the political ideas that we share, he has been kind enough to formally promise me the decoration in France.´ Eiffel further refers to his wife´s recent death and explains the difficult time he is facing, saying `I have been very much afflicted by the cruel loss of my wife that I have experienced, leaving me with five young children. My union with her was extremely close and her loss left a void in my life that nothing could fill… I often need a strong will which do not permit my discouragement.´ Eiffel, before concluding, reports on his travel plans `I am right now on my way to Porto where I will stay for three weeks in order to hasten the completion of our bridge which is almost finished. I will then travel immediately to Pest.´ Very small overall minor age wear, with professional repair to the spine, otherwise G to VG In 1878 the Universal Exhibition was held at the Champ de Mars in Paris.Marguerite Gaudelet (1845-1877) wife of Gustave Eiffel. (New York), 11th February 1993, to Daniel Patrick Moynihan. Boutros-Ghali acknowledges receipt of his correspondent's letter regarding 'the serious humanitarian situation in the Republic of Armenia', adding that he shares Moynihan's concerns over the 'rapidly deteriorating conditions' and continuing to comment on the action being taken following the launch of an Immediate Emergency Appeal, 'In response, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees immediately launched a programme - which is continuing - of emergency assistance to refugees and other persons displaced by the conflict……Despite its modest goal, only about a third of the total has been raised until now. Additionally, in view of the desperate fuel situation in Armenia, in December I sought and obtained the co-operation of a neighbouring country to facilitate the transshipment (sic) of much-needed oil deliveries to the Republic of Armenia. I was greatly heartened that, in order to ensure these fuel oil deliveries, the United States pledged to assume a major share of the transport costs…..The Security Council, which has been seized with the matter…..urged all countries in a position to do so to facilitate the provision of fuel and humanitarian assistance to Armenia and the Nakhichevan region of Azerbaijan. Concerning the ongoing conflict in the region of Nagorno-Karabakh, involving the republics of Armenia and Azerbaijan, the United Nations has supported the efforts of the CSCE to achieve a settlement…..In support of these peace-making efforts of the CSCE, the Security Council has issued three presidential statements, and I have dispatched several fact-finding missions to the area', and concluding by giving assurances that he intends to continue supporting the activities.
