A TOURMALINE AND GOLD BROOCH, BY H. STERN, CIRCA 1970The brooch of gold openwork panel of abstract textured design, set with a central bi-coloured tourmaline, accompanied with a ring of similar design, mounted in 18K gold, signed with maker's marks, brooch length approximately 5cm, ring size KA German Emigrant, Hans Stern (1922-2007) founded H. Stern whilst living in Brazil in 1945, at just 23 years old. While working as a typist for a trading company, he fell in love with precious gemstones and began a small-scale gemstone trading office in Rio de Janeiro; this trading office quickly developed into gemstones cutting and jewellery manufacturing. By 1964, the company became renowned for the creation and promotion of interest in coloured gemstones internationally. Hans Stern was hailed as ‘the king of coloured stones’ by Time Magazine. H. Stern’s interest in fashion led him to organised the first ever jewellery fashion show in Brazil. He was also the only Latin American brand to participate in Victoria and Albert Museum Jewellery Exhibition. It was however, the 1980s launch of the Catherine Deneuve collection, inspired by the muse of Bunuel’s ‘Belle du Jour’, which catapulted H. Stern’s successor and his brand to success and led his brand to win numerous design awards. H. Stern soon became jeweller to the stars with his pieces making regular appearances on Hollywood red carpets. H. Stern is currently the biggest jeweller in Brazil and Latin America, so much so that top fashion editorials such as Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire and Harper’s Bazaar have all featured H. Stern’s creations. His brand has come to be one of the greatest recognised jewellery brands in the world. Today Ronaldo and Roberto Stern, the sons of Hans Stern, carry on their father’s legacy, continuing to push the boundaries of jewellery design and share their love and appreciation for precious gemstones.

A Fine and Large Baroque Carved Ivory of Christ Crucified - Flemish sculptor follower of Claude Beissonat, last quarter 17th Century; ; on a not pertinent wooden cross. This large crucifix conforms to the anatomy, to the face and to the folds of Claude Beissonat’s other pieces, including the ones kept at the Real Academia de San Fernando in Madrid and in the Encarnación convent. All the mentioned cases share the detail of the presence of the four nails that was recovered from early medieval and Byzantine models post-Tridentine Council. The perizome stopped by a rope refers to other works of Beissonat, a Flemish sculptor, which converts Neapolitan exuberance in a rough manner.97 cm, 38 3?16 in high overall, 51 cm, 20 5/64 in wide. Christ 55 cm, 21 21/32 in high - 39.5 cm, 15 35?64 in wide. Item condition grading: ***** excellent (old original creamy patina with aged ivory surface). Certificato Ce.S.Ar

Lot 393

Kingdom of Pontos, Mithradates VI Eupator AV Stater. Bithyno-Pontic year 223, intercalary month 13 = October 74 BC. Diademed head right / Stag grazing left; BAΣIΛEΩΣ above, MIΘPAΔATOY / EYΠATOPOΣ in two lines below; to left, star-in-crescent above ΓKΣ (year); two monograms to right, IΓ (month 13) in exergue; all within Dionysiac wreath of ivy and fruit. Unpublished in the standard references; Roma VII, 758 (this coin); CNG 96, 372 (same dies); cf. for date: Callataÿ 1997, tetradrachms D56-59. 8.41g, 21mm, 12h. Extremely Fine. Unpublished; one of only two known a coin of great numismatic importance. Ex Roma Numismatics VII, 22 March 2014, lot 758. A beautifully idealized portrait of the ageing king, the obverse die of this coin was also used to strike a previously unrecorded stater dated with the intercalary month IB (i.e., September 74 BC; see CNG 93, 22 May 2013, lot 339). This places this unique coin circa October 74 BC, making it one of the very latest gold staters of Mithradates of which we are currently aware. The facts that the obverse die was reused and the paucity of surviving specimens both suggest that the issue was a small one. Additionally, this coin stands out for having been issued more than ten years after the main series of staters had ended in 85 BC. This revival of gold issues by Mithradates can only be explained by the events unfolding at the time: the death of Nikomedes IV of Bithynia in 75 left no heirs to the kingdom, and instead bequeathed the state to Rome. Faced with the prospect of losing a coveted territory to his old enemy who would not share a border with his own lands, Mithradates began renewed preparations for war. This coin was struck on the very eve of Mithradates’ invasion of the new Roman province of Bithynia and the start of the Third Mithradatic War (73-63 BC). This conflict would result in great devastation being wrought on Pontos, betrayal on the part of Mithradates’ son Machares who allied himself with Rome, and rebellion by another son Pharnakes (see lot 765) who assumed control of the army and forced his father to commit suicide. Armenia, which under Tigranes ‘the Great’ had supported Mithradates in his war on Rome, suffered several heavy defeats and the loss of its capital; it ended the war as a client state of Rome. Pontos would cease to exist as a kingdom, and would be declared to be a Roman province by a victorious Pompey. Intercalation - the inserting of months, days, even hours and seconds - into the calendar is a practice which aligns the calendar in use with the observable seasons or phases of the moon. There are many recorded instances of intercalation from classical antiquity, and the Romans used it extensively until Julius Caesar reformed the Roman Calendar of 355 days replacing it with his own Julian Calendar of 365.25 days, which took effect in 45 BC.

Lot 1162

Carausius BI Radiate. London, March - October AD 287. [VIRTVS CAR]AVSI, helmeted, radiate and cuirassed bust left, holding spear and shield / LIBERALITAS AVG, Carausius seated left on platform, holding branch; behind him, Liberalitas standing left holding tesserae and cornucopiae; to left, citizen ascending steps; C in exergue. RIC 278; Webb 326. 3.78g, 25mm, 6h. Very Fine. Very Rare. Early attributions of the C mintmark to Clausentum, Calleva, Camulodunum or for the fleet (Classiensis), are now considered unlikely since many issues share the same sequence marks such as S-P or S-C as those coins struck at the mint of London. Thus, the C mintmark (for Caesar?) may indicate the existence of a separate officina at the London mint issuing coins for distribution to civil administrators and the army.

Artist: Carla ReglerTitle: The Power of the WavesSize: 30 x 40.5 x 2cmMedium: Photograph on baulkCarla ReglerMy interest in photography began in 2010 during a move to Porthleven with my partner to open a new restaurant and it was here that I fell in love with the amazing landscapes, seascapes and wildlife in the area. I have also linked this new interest with my love of horses, having spent my entire life working with these beautiful creatures. Since taking a step back from running the restaurant to pursue a more full time career in photography, I have now opened a Gallery to share my images with customers and clients alike. I work with professional printers, which has enabled me to understand the logistics of getting work to print and displaying it for sale. I have had work published in various magazines and newspapers, as well as online - and in late 2014, I was delighted to hear that my image of Porthleven being battered by the ferocious storms had won the Weather category in the British Life Photography Awards. DISCLAIMER: The Porthleven baulk/harbour defence wood is made (on the whole) of Douglas Fir Pine. The actual date of the wood is unknown, the wood broke on the 5th February 2014 and after that was stored outdoors in the harbour yard. Wood is a natural product that responds to temperature and humidity variations by expanding and contracting. You are purchasing a natural product as seen and the Charity the Fishermen's Mission cannot be held responsible for any changes in the wood after the auction on the 18th March 2017.

A William and Mary kingwood oyster veneered and rosewood cabinet on stand The upper part with a moulded overhanging cornice and cushion frieze drawer above a pair of geometric inlaid doors enclosing an interior of ten various drawers around a central cupboard door enclosing five various small drawers, the stand with a long frieze drawer, on six later square section broken scroll legs joined by shaped stretchers uniting to support a radiating kingwood oyster veneered oval inlaid platform, on turned bun feet, with various old handwritten labels to the interior of the drawers and inscribed '1799', '1802', 'Jovis' and another 'Leverton Papers, to be Kept', 124.5cm wide, 52cm deep, 172cm high. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 11.0px Helvetica; color: #000000; -webkit-text-stroke: #000000} p.p2 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 11.0px Helvetica; color: #000000; -webkit-text-stroke: #000000; min-height: 13.0px} span.s1 {font-kerning: none}The cabinet offered here forms part of a small number of known cabinets which share certain similarities. Two have been published: notably an escritoire from the collection of the architect Basil Ionides with apparently a notably similar arrangement of kingwood oyster veneer roundels and spandrels (Country Life, August 11, 1950). This escritoire was referred to by Christopher Gilbert as a ‘highly important kingwood fall-front cabinet inscribed 'Thomas Pistor, Ludgate Hill, London, formerly owned by the Hon. Basil Ionides, which unfortunately remains untraced’, see C.Gilbert, The Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, 1700-1840, Leeds 1996, p.44. A similarly veneered kingwood cabinet 'in two stages' forms part of the Noel Terry collection at Fairfax House, York and is illustrated in P.Brown, The Noel Terry Collection of Furniture & Clocks, York 1987, p.39, catalogued as c.1690-95 and acquired by Noel Terry from Mallett in 1935.It is possible that the class as a whole has a common maker (based on Christopher Gilbert's comments, possibly Thomas Pistor, for further information on this cabinetmaker see lot 27). There are similarities between different examples not only in the use of the veneers, but also in the details of the mouldings and other points of construction. The name 'Kingwood' does not appear in British sources until 1770 before which it was probably referred to as princes wood although the exact Botanical species has not been identified other than being a species of Dalbergia, see A.Bowett, Woods in British Furniture Making 1400-1900, Wetherby 2012, p.104.Bowett notes that kingwood had generally gone out of fashion by around 1730 but was re-introduced, very possibly by the French émigré cabinetmakers in London during the 1770’s. Kingwood was amongst the most expensive woods generally used by cabinet-makers at the time, and its use is invariably associated with furniture of high quality. A William & Mary kingwood oyster veneered cabinet on chest attributed to Thomas PistorThe upper part with a moulded overhanging cornice and a cushion frieze drawer above a pair of cupboard doors inlaid with concentric circles and enclosing a fitted interior of eleven various drawers, the housing for two of the larger top drawers concealing sliding compartments with small removable lidded boxes, around a central cupboard door with a sliding panel and concealed box compartment within the door, the door enclosing four further small short drawers,  the lower part with two short and two long drawers, on later bun feet, the sides similarly decorated with oyster veneers, 119cm wide, 51cm deep, 180.5cm high The attribution to the London cabinet-maker Thomas Pistor is based on a group of pieces identified and previously with W.R Harvey including two kingwood cabinets and a desk to which the cabinet offered here is clearly part of the same group. There were in fact two cabinet-makers called Thomas Pistor, father and son, working for a period at the same time but at different premises. One or both are known to have made furniture of quality for Levens Hall although the group of kingwood pieces that correspond to the cabinet offered here do not relate directly to the Levens Hall furniture. From the 4-18 August 1950 Country Life ran a series of articles featuring what was then the recently rebuilt Buxted Park, a house reconstructed by the architect Basil Ionides following a serious fire and in one of the illustrations a kingwood escritoire is visible. Subsequently Christopher Gilbert commented in The Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, Leeds, 1996, p.44 that a “highly important kingwood fall-front cabinet inscribed ‘Thomas Pistor, Ludgate Hill, London’, formerly owned by the Hon. Basil Ionides, unfortunately remains untraced. It was amongst the Buxted Park furniture at Sotheby’s, 25 September 1963, lot 168 (withdrawn)…”. The whereabouts of this escritoire remain unknown and further details of how the pieces was marked remain uncertain. There was in fact no Sotheby’s sale on this date. A somewhat later sale of the Ionides’ property was held by Sotheby’s, 1 November 1963, in which lot 168 was described as “A William and Mary olivewood secretaire cabinet in richly figured parquetry…”. although no trade label is mentioned. It is nonetheless possible that this is the piece referred to by Christopher Gilbert. Gilbert was amongst the first generation of furniture historians to have begun compiling archives of stamped and labelled furniture leading to the publication of both The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers and Marked London Furniture 1660-1840 (1996). The Buxted cabinets appearance could well have meant that his attention was drawn to it by the furniture department at Sotheby’s while processing the Ionides property. The overall profile and proportions of the Buxted escritoire conforms to that of the cabinet offered here and the W.R Harvey cabinets as does the pattern of oysters visible on the frieze drawer, and there is a strikingly similar large radiating circular pattern. It is undoubtedly the same maker responsible for the cabinet offered here and for the two W.R Harvey cabinets, one of which is a near pair to the above cabinet. The two cabinets share virtually identical dimensions, profile of the mouldings at the cornice, waist and base. The size and layout of all of the drawers are identical and in both cabinets secret drawers can be found in the underside of the internal door and above the two top internal drawers and the use of veneers is near identical on both pieces. The interiors of both are furnished with two large drawers above and below the central door, three smaller drawers either side, and a small drawer immediately below the door. The veneers on the drawers are again almost identical, the chest sections have dovetails that appear to have been cut by the same hand. The internal door locks appear the same and most strikingly of all, the stylised numbers on the backs of the internal drawers and the corresponding divides were seemingly done by the same hand presumably in the same workshop.

MANDELA NELSON: (1918-2013) South African President 1994-99, Nobel Peace Prize winner, 1993. A good T.L.S., N Mandela, three pages, 8vo, n.p., 14th January 1998, to Helen Suzman. Mandela thanks his correspondent for her letter and states 'I do of course share your concerns regarding human rights issues of the past and the toll it has taken on our nation', continuing 'Some of the victims families still oppose The Truth and Reconciliation Commission as they fear the injustices are not being dealt with by lengthy prison sentences, however they will come to realise its importance, perhaps not during the hearings but in the years which follow. The families of the victims are finally receiving closure, this alone is a step in the right direction' and further remarking 'Our police force was negatively involved in countless acts in the past, however the force is constantly transforming and will continue to do so well into the future as a far greater number of all races are currently being accepted into the force, the human rights violations acted out by a small number of our police force can be directly attributed to the Apartheid regime'. Mandela also reflects that 'Human rights violations are an unfortunate part of our history, however we must not ignore the past but rather embark on a healing process' and comments 'The Commission is most fortunate to have Archbishop Desmond Tutu as Chairman, both parties respect him and his presence as a Christian religious leader is symbolic. Religion is the common ground, ultimately both parties believe in the same God, this difficult process is spiritual if the legal aspect is overlooked for a moment'. The President adds 'The judicial system is doing everything within its power to ensure that justice is followed in the correct manner. Over the past few years I have witnessed many success stories, South Africa has completely transformed to make me believe that The Commission will ultimately be a great success' and concludes 'I note the continued efforts you are making towards this issue. I would be happy to meet with you to discuss any general issues you may wish to raise'. A letter of interesting political content and association. A couple of very small staple holes to the upper left corner of each page, not affecting the text or signature, VGHelen Suzman (1917-2009) South African anti-apartheid Activist and Politician, twice nominated for the Nobel Peace prize. Desmond Tutu (1931- ) South African Social Rights Activist, the first black Archbishop of Cape Town. Nobel Peace Prize winner, 1984. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission was a court-like restorative justice body assembled in South Africa following the abolition of apartheid in 1994. The Commission was seen by many as a crucial component of the transition to full and free democracy in South Africa.

Lot 876

The bottom of the coffee pot is engraved “William L. Elkins to his son George W. Elkins/ to his Daughter Louisa Elkins Sinkler/ to her Grandson Edwin Corning Sinkler.” The pot measures around 13 inches tall, 11 inches back to front, and 6 inches wide. Contains 35.36 ounces of solid coin silver. Some minor wear from age & use. William Lukens Elkins (May 2, 1832 – November 7, 1903) was an American businessman, inventor, and art collector. Although his father was a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, William Elkins was born in Wheeling, West Virginia. He started his working life at a grocery store in Philadelphia where his family had returned to live. He next worked for a produce company and eventually formed a partnership with Peter Saybolt to operate their own produce business. By 1860 Elkins had bought out his partner and built the operation into the largest store of its kind in the United States. Always looking for business opportunities, William Elkins soon recognized the potential for the usages of oil being pumped from the developing oilfields of Northwestern Pennsylvania and became a pioneer in the refining of crude oil. In Philadelphia he founded Monument Oil Works that built a primitive oil refinery which he constantly modernized and soon expanded into other locations. His company was the first to make gasoline and was involved in the production of asphalt. In 1875, the increasingly wealthy Elkins entered into a partnership with Standard Oil, becoming a significant shareholder in that oil giant. In 1873, William Elkins first met Peter Widener and the two became trusted friends who would partner in street car and railway businesses that would expand to major cities across the United States and make them both enormously wealthy.[6] A member of the Board of Directors of numerous enterprises in Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey, among his investments William Elkins held sizeable share positions in American Tobacco Company and International Mercantile Marine Co. In 1858 William Elkins married Maria Louise Broomall with whom he had two daughters, Ida Ameila Elkins (Tyler) and Eleanor Elkins (Widener), and two sons, George W. Elkins and William L. Elkins, Jr. Ida Amelia married Sydney F. Tyler, bearing no children. Eleanor married George Dunton Widener, with whom she had three children, and lost her husband and elder son, Harry, in the April 12, 1912 sinking of RMS Titanic. George W. Elkins married Stella McIntire, and they had four children. One daughter, Stella, married George F. Tyler, and founded the Stella Elkins Tyler School of Art. The other daughter, Louise, married Wharton Sinkler. A son, William McIntire Elkins, was a book collector whose collection of early Americana is held at the Free Library of Philadelphia. William Elkins died at his summer home, at age seventy-one on November 7, 1903 in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania. Among his philanthropic gifts, William Elkins left $240,000 to the Masonic Home for Girls in Philadelphia. He bequeathed his art collection to the city to be given following the death of his last heir.
