Jane Bustin Mother Avocado dye and toilet tissue paper on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by AOAP About Jane Bustin, born 1964, London, studied at Portsmouth University and lives and works in London, her practice spans three decades of single works in painting and ceramic as well as installation, text, film and performance. The works influences come from 14th century frescos, 17th century painting, Belle epoque iconography, modernist literature, Nineteenth century poetry, women artists, 70's feminist movement, Japanese ceramics, fabrics, books, hardware stores, neon signs, cosmetics, sweet wrappers... Gallery Representation Brooke Benington (London) Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork Katie Tomlinson's paintings reflect on the united experiences of women and focus on the intricate dynamics of human connections. Ideas surrounding power structures and vulnerability; nuances of consent, exchange, and desire; heteronormativity and performative femininity; and the politicisation of intimacy recur throughout her practice. Using vivid colour, playful and surreal motifs, absurdity, symbolism, and varying applications of paint, the works are imbued with tension, concealed messages, and fluctuating tempos. Katie's paintings serve as both an exploration into the medium and the figures in which inhabit the frame. These figures demand further exploration, inviting questions about their identities, actions, motivations, and relationships with one another. Katie's paintings overtly reference moments throughout the canon of Western, patriarchal, art history. She reconsiders, reconfigures, and reclaims specific moments from Painting's problematic past. Harbouring this as a tool to enhance, develop, and reinforce her paintings' contemporary social themes within a post-MeToo era.   You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works. Victoria Adelaide Mary Louisa, Princess Royal, later Empress Friedrich of Germany and Queen of Prussia,  British 1840-1901- Portrait of Princess Margaret of Prussia, wearing a black hat and a red jacket with a furred collar; oil on canvas, bears inscription 'Painting of Princess Margaret / by Her Mother Princess Royal of England and Empress Frederick of GERMANY' on the upper horizontal stretcher bar, 51.5 x 44.5 cm. Provenance:  Acquired by Alexander Lamont Henderson (1838-1907), 'Photographic Enameller' to Queen Victoria;  thence by descent to the present owner (the great grand-daughter of Alexander Lamont Henderson). Note:  Princess Victoria was the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and was created Princess Royal in 1841. In 1857, she married Prince Frederick William of Prussia, when she was only seventeen. In 1888, when her husband succeeded to the throne, she became the Queen of Prussia, and after her husband's death in the same year, she became widely known as Empress Frederick. Princess Victoria was an accomplished artist. The UK's Royal Collection holds thirteen oil paintings by her, of which six are portraits. Two, in particular, share close similarities with the present work: 'Princess Victoria of Prussia (1866-1929) when a child', who is the older sister of the present subject [RCIN 406220] and 'Princess Marie of Edinburgh, later Queen of Roumania (1875-1938)', the artist's niece [RCIN 403997]. Other examples of her works are catalogued by Oliver Millar in his 'Victorian Paintings in the Collection of HM The Queen', 1992, nos 1069-1078 and 1096. Paintings by her however rarely come onto the market. Margaret of Prussia (1872-1954) was the youngest child of Frederick and Victoria. She was also the younger sister of Emperor Wilhelm II and the granddaughter of Queen Victoria. She married Prince Frederick Charles of Hesse, the elected King of Finland, making her the would-be Queen of Finland had he not decided to renounce the throne on 14 December 1918. In 1926, they assumed the titles of Landgrave and Landgravine of Hesse. The couple had six sons and lost three in the First and Second World Wars.

An exceptional, low-mileage, low-ownership example of Suzuki's, now rare, SJ413 - offered at No Reserve. The Suzuki Jimny, a small, simple and robust 4x4 car, became the Japanese car maker’s first global success. In 1970, the first version was introduced as the LJ ('Light Jeep') 10. With its length of less than 3.2 metres, it belonged into the tax-privileged 'Kei car' (smallest vehicle) category. Its successor LJ 20 introduced the famous vertical grille bars and a stronger engine. In 1975 the SJ series ('Suzuki Jeep') was launched, which eventually replaced the LJ, even though both models were offered simultaneously. Power upgrades followed, additional markets were won over. In Germany, the LJ was presented in 1979 and the SJ 410 available as of 1982.As it was cheap to buy and run, it quickly gained a significant market share, with Suzuki becoming market leader for 4x4 cars throughout the 1980s. Particularly popular became the SJ 413 (four-wheel drive, 1.3-litre engine), later called 'Samurai' which featured a  larger 1.3-litre four-cylinder engine, 5-speed manual transmission and power brakes (disc brakes on the front and drum brakes on the rear) all around. The body and interior were also redesigned, with the introduction of a roll bar, along with a new dashboard, seats, and grille. This smart example was originally supplied by Suzuki at Highfield in January 1991 - the original Sales Invoice remains with the car. The previous owner purchased the car in 2020 and used it regularly for local journeys, storing it under cover during Lockdown and in the winter. Now over 30 years old, the car is a remarkable survivor and remains in excellent condition, a testament to its three owners. The service book documents the first main dealer service in 1991 and then 11 hand-written entries from 2002 until 2015, detailing service and maintenance work. A quantity of further maintenance records and parts invoices show just how well the little Suzuki has been looked after. The odometer currently reads 32,551 miles which is corroborated by the extensive service and MOT history. It's supplied with the original dealer bookpack, numerous invoices, older MOT Certificates back to 1997, an original brochure and some useful spares including a windscreen.Specification Make: SUZUKI Model: SJ 413 VX Year: 1991 Chassis Number: VSE0SJV3D00088904 Registration Number: H638 FLU Transmission: manual Engine Number: G13A93238 Odometer Reading: 32500 Miles Interior Colour: Grey ClothClick here for more details and images

A Scandinavian Silver Tankard, Maker's Mark A, Possibly Norwegian, Dated 1661 tapering cylindrical and on spreading base, the rim engraved in the Renaissance style with fruiting foliage scrolls, the lower body later chased with winged figures within foliage scrolls and auricular ornament, the hinged cover engraved with initials and dated 1661 and with a further engraved band dated 1701, the scroll handle with baluster thumbpiece 20.3cm high, 20oz 10dwt, 637gr The present tankard is very much in the style of Scandinavian tankards of the first half of the 17th century and perhaps mostly those from Norway. Such tankards are typically of a tapering form, with engraved decoration to the rim and mid-body. They also seem to share a domed cover with a further central dome which is typically variously engraved with coats-of-arms and dates or inscriptions. Three such examples are illustrated by Jorunn Fossberg, Norway’s Silver Heritage, 1000 Years of Norwegian Silver, Oslo, 1997, pp. 30-35. These examples include one marked for Rasmus of Skein, Oslo, 1611; one by Hans Rasmussen, Oslo, early 17th century and finally one by Lucas Steen, Bergen, circa 1630.Two further examples, by Jost Albertszenn, of Bergen are published by Vanessa Brett, The Sotheby’s Directory of Silver 1600-1940, London, 1986, pp. 406-407. The first, fig. 1945 was sold Sotheby’s, London, 15 July 1976, lot 89 and the second, fig. 1956 circa 1625 by the same in 1962. Albertszenn’s silver mark, as published online as well as by Hans Johan Storesund, 100 Norse Solvskjeer, 1580-1780, 1993, nos. 52, 52 and 56 is an A which a diagonal bar within a shaped shield, not dissimilar to the mark on the present tankard. Marked under base with maker's mark only. There is some minor wear to the mark. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is noticeable as a softening to the engraving, especially to the engraved initials and dates on the hinged cover. There is a split to the base where is attaches to the body. There is some bruising overall. The cover with some bruising so doesn't close tightly. The chasing on the lower body is later.

Three: Lieutenant-Colonel N. Macnamara, Royal Marine Artillery Crimea 1854-56, 2 clasps, Sebastopol, Azoff (Lieut. N. Macnamara, R.M. Arty.) depot impressed naming; Ottoman Empire, Order of the Medjidie, Fifth Class breast badge, silver, gold appliqué, and enamel; Turkish Crimea, Sardinian issue, unnamed, fitted with Crimea suspension, edge bruising and contact marks, otherwise nearly very fine (3) £700-£900 --- Provenance: Clive Nowell Collection, Dix Noonan Webb, June 2009. Note: A similar group to this recipient but with an engraved Crimea medal was sold by Buckland Dix & Wood in June 1994. Nugent Macnamara was born in Guernsey and entered the Royal Marine Artillery as a 2nd Lieutenant, aged 19 years, on 30 December 1847. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant in April 1849, he saw service on the West Coast of Africa prior to participating in the Crimea War, when he was present at the siege and fall of Sebastopol, and as the Senior Officer, R.M.A., employed in the Sea of Azoff in June 1855. The latter post resulted in his landing at Ghirsk, Marionpol and Taganrog, where he destroyed government stores (despatches). He was also present at the bombardment and surrender of Kinburn and received the 5th class badge of the Turkish Order of Medjidjie, the latter decoration being referred to in a letter of his to the Deputy Adjutant General (R.M.), dated 1 November 1877: “... the importance of the Expedition, which was signally successful, was marked by the 'Azoff' clasp being added to the Crimea Medal and by an extensive Naval Promotion in which from the rank I then held I was unable to share. On obtaining my Company in 1859, I submitted an application for Brevet rank but was unsuccessful so that my services together with those of the Force I commanded remained unrecognised beyond the award of the 5th class of the Medjidjie which the officers serving under my orders received. In fact Macnamara received his promotion to Captain in 1859 and to Brevet Major in 1872. He held several sea-going appointments during this period, including one aboard the famous ironclad, H.M.S. Warrior, between 1867-69 (Warrior has now been restored to her former glory and is open to the public at Portsmouth). He was subsequently appointed Staff Captain at R.M.A. Headquarters in 1870 and retired with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1876. Recipient of a Greenwich Hospital Pension in 1903, Macnamara died on 3 May 1917.

Tadeusz Makowski (Polish, 1882-1932)Letter with an Illustration of a Cow and a Man on the reverse signed 'Votre bien dévoué, / Makowski' (lower right of the letter)pen, graphite, and wash on paper31.5 x 21.0 cm (12 3/8 x 8 1/4 in).unframed.Footnotes:ProvenanceAlfred and Maria Tarski, Berkeley, California; then by family descent to the Estate of Eva Kristina Ehrenfeucht.N.B.Along with his wife, Maria, Jewish-American logician and mathematician Alfred Tarski was an avid collector of Polish art and amassed an impressive collection of works from some of Poland's most influential artists. Like many artists in their collection, Mr. Tarski was born in Warsaw, Poland to Jewish parents in 1901. Mr. Tarski was educated in Poland at the University of Warsaw and became a member of the Lwów–Warsaw School, one of the most important schools of Polish logic and philosophy, and of the Warsaw School of Mathematics. In 1929 he married Maria Witkowska and they began collecting art. Maria worked as a courier for the army in the Polish–Soviet War. They had two children together, and in 1939 the family immigrated to the United States where Mr. Tarski taught and carried out research in mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley until his death in 1983.Translation of the letter, which is written in French and begins below the image of the cow: 31 August 1932My very dear friend, from day to day I postpone my correspondence, and am realizing that the weeks pass quickly and that I leave you without my news. [Next page] The days are already short and the evenings I feel too tired to gather my thoughts to share with my friends. Now I've been here for almost two months and I'm finally able to recap the results of my work, which always remain a bit vague at the beginning. Well! My dear friend, I have more than twenty panels more or less, some of which will require more development in my workshop in Paris - if it is impossible for me to finish them here. At the same time, I'm taking a canvas of 60 which is already slightly drafted out and I hope to push myself to soon be ready to translate onto these according to the documents collected in nature ['les documents recueilles sur la nature']. I hope that you will find in my efforts a continuation of the spirit of my little painting of ruin ['mon petit tableau deruir'] - it seems to me that above all it will be necessary to exercise much of the painter's memory to evoke as needed the shapes and colors without their living aspect. Because more and more I consider a big part of the tradition of imagination to be painting. The landscape doesn't tempt me much, or rather the figure absorbs me almost entirely. I take much more care in finishing each small painting, and this work of patience and of love gives me so much joy, which saves me from moments of despair in the event of my success. It is the only compensation for all the troubles which nonetheless don't complicate a life full of obstacles from all sides.I want to be able to stay for another month in the countryside - especially since I haven't benefited much from it for my health. Perhaps you could do something very small for me; I would be delighted and very grateful. This delicate subject for which I apologize will, I hope, be forgivable given the frankness with which I have always addressed your good memory. The weather is getting a little bad - but I'm not complaining. My puppy is doing well and happily taking his bath every day in the river - is there anything new there from anyone? Maybe an exhibition in September? Your news is a great pleasure to me.Sending you all my affection, my friendship, and my deepest respects to Madame.Faithfully yours,MakowskiFor further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A Chinese Scroll Calligraphy By Zhu Yunming. Song Dynasty. Dimensions (Painting View): 53 1/2 x 20 inches (136cm x 51cm). Sakamoto Goro (1923 - August 15, 2016) was a globally renowned Japanese antique art dealer and the founder of the antique art store Buyantang. He became famous for selling a Chinese Yuan Dynasty Blue and White Porcelain Jar for approximately 176 million Japanese yen at a Sotheby's auction held in London in 1972. He was actively involved in auctions at houses like Sotheby's and Christie's and set several records for the sale of Asian artworks, bringing numerous exquisite art pieces back to Buyantang. In April 1999, Sakamoto Goro acquired a Ming Chenghua Doucai Chicken Cup at a Sotheby's auction in Hong Kong for 29.17 million Hong Kong dollars, setting a record as one of the highest-priced items in the auction market for ancient Chinese porcelain. Sakamoto Goro made several significant donations of Chinese ceramics, bronzes, and other artifacts to institutions such as the Tokyo National Museum, Nara National Museum, National Museum of China, and the National Palace Museum in Taipei. He often collaborated with institutions like the Tokyo National Museum and Nara National Museum for exhibitions, sharing his extensive collection of fine art with the public through museums. An example of this is the Cizhou Kiln White Glaze Basin he donated to the National Palace Museum, which was exhibited at the Tokyo National Museum in 1961 and the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts in 1978. After these artworks were returned to Buyantang, Sakamoto Goro retained the temporary labels they used during their museum displays. SALVADOR DALÍ (1904-1989)Les chevaux de Duncan, roi d'Ecosse signed and dated 'Dalí 1946' (lower right)pen and India ink and pen and ink on card25.4 x 19.5cm (10 x 7 11/16in).Executed in 1946Footnotes:The authenticity of this work was confirmed by the late Robert Descharnes.ProvenanceMichèle Broutta Collection, Paris (acquired directly from the artist). Private collection, France (by descent from the above).Acquired from the above by the present owner.LiteratureW. Shakespeare, Macbeth, Illustrated by Salvador Dalí, New York, 1946 (illustrated Act II, scene IV).A.S. Morris, 'Introducing Shakespeare to the General Reader', in The New York Times, 15 December 1946 (illustrated).Although Salvador Dalí is best known for his Surrealist paintings, he was also an accomplished book illustrator. His illustrations belong to the same eccentric universe as his paintings, often featuring strange creatures within dreamlike landscapes. These illustrations draw their vitality from Dalí's freedom of interpretation as well as his deep understanding of the text at hand. William Shakespeare's (1564-1616) groundbreaking plays were among Dalí's most important influences and favourite subjects to illustrate, as he came back to the bard's work throughout his career. Macbeth, As You Like It and Romeo and Juliet were among the plays he illustrated in print and designed sets and costumes for. Despite being separated by centuries, Dalí's and Shakespeare's works share common themes and tropes, including dreams, the subconscious mind and fantastical characters in outlandish settings. Shakespeare's particular emphasis on the complex psychological states of his characters also foreshadowed the developments of modern psychology, which greatly influenced Dalí in turn. The present work is key in this regard. In the 1946 edition of Macbeth published by Doubleday, New York, it is used to illustrate Ross's lines from Act II, scene IV: And Duncan's horses (a thing most strange and certain), / Beauteous and swift, the minions of their race, / Turn'd wild in nature, broke their stalls, flung out, / Contending 'gainst obedience, as they would make / War with mankind. Ross and the Old Man in the scene go on to remark that the horses ate each other. Despite this violence taking place off-stage, Dalí deliberately opted to illustrate the passage with gruesome detail. His illustration crams the horses together in a chaotic tussle, with the left horse notably missing its pupil, as though possessed by an otherworldly force. The bursting of the horses' broken bones through their flesh is a macabre element added by Dalí rather than Shakespeare. Therefore, Dalí infuses the source material with his own creative interpretation, as his impeccable draughtsmanship graces the scene with a finesse and beauty that counterbalances its violence. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * AR* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.AR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The Anthony R. East Classic Motorcycle Collection1962 BSA 649cc A10Registration no. 105 FATFrame no. GA7 21287Engine no. DA10 9293A letter on file from a former owner, Charles Rigby of RAF Catterick, dated 26th of February 1984 and addressed to a Mr Williams of Kings Lynn, Norfolk, states that Rigby bought it from a Michael Share of Ushaw Moor in the spring of 1977. Rigby purchased the BSA as a solo in poor condition and rebuilt it, attaching a Busmar sidecar (see photographs on file). He also fitted a reconditioned bottom-end (as currently installed) and beautified 'everything'. It would appear that Mr Rigby sold the BSA to Mr Fred Church of RAF Cranwell. In late 1983/early 1984 a Mr Williams bought the machine from an owner on the outskirts of Sleaford, Lincolnshire. He restored it during 1984 and kept it for four years. Purchased Tony East in 1990, the BSA has since been restored throughout and comes with restorer Bryan Small's invoice for £3,900. The odometer reading of 558 miles is believed to be the distance covered since restoration. Additional documentation includes a quantity of invoices relating to Mr Williams' restoration of 1984; an invoice for a rebuilt magneto in 1997; Motor Cycle data book; instruction manual; service sheets; a quantity of old MoTs; and old/current V5/V5C documents.
