TURGENEV IVAN: (1818-1883) Russian Novelist and Playwright. A.L.S., Iwan Turgenjew, two pages, 8vo, Rue de Douai, Paris, 2nd February 1878, to Mrs. Paoli, on Turgenev's personal monogrammed stationery, in German. Turgenev replies to his correspondent's kind letter and informs her 'In fact, from the very beginning of my career as an author I wrote plays (the last one in 1851) but I very soon became convinced that I didn't possess the stuff of the dramatic poet, for only the evolution of the characters interested me, not their conflicts', further remarking 'Moreover my pieces have met with no success'. The author continues to remark that, as his correspondent has shown a friendly interest in his affairs, he will send her a copy of his Scenes of Russian Life, explaining that it comprises two plays, 'a comedy in two acts and one in one act' and that 'The last one is not even planned for the stage', also suggesting that 'You will most likely share my opinion about my dramatic skills'. A letter of fine literary content. With blank integral leaf. A thin vertical strip of extremely light discoloration appears to the left edge of the letter, evidently caused by previous mounting, and only very minimally touches the conclusion of Turgenev's signature and a few words of text, otherwise VG

Condition GVF+ Swing mounted, with miniature set and Photographs of Reynolds with fellows officers John James Reynolds served with the 2nd County of London Yeomanry -(Westminster Dragoons), during the Second World War. B & C squadrons were among the first to Land on Gold Beach on D Day, tasked with removing German Mines using the Sherman Crab. Reynolds was awarded the M.B.E in large part for his role in organising the unit for Operation Overlord. The original recommendation and an overview of his career follow. M.B.E 27th March 1945 The KING has been graciously pleased to give orders for the following promotions in, and appointments to, the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in North-West Europe: - Lieutenant (Quarter-Master) John James Reynolds '(257526), 2nd County of London Yeomanry -(Westminster Dragoons), Royal Armoured Corps (Windsor). 'Lt Reynolds joined this Regt in January 43 immediately on being granted his commission from the rank of RSM aster 17 years and six months OR service. At this time regimental stores and corresponding records required thorough reorganisation, and there were considerable arrears of work accumulated during the illness of his predecessor. Although without a QMS (T) for two months at this time Lt. Reynolds completed his task most successfully and from the beginning, his work in the regiment has been of the highest order. Reorganisation of the Regiment, re-equipment, mobilisation and preparation for Operation 'Overlord' all took place within a comparatively short time and resulted in an immense increase of work, a large share of which fell upon the QM. No AF G1098 was available for the Flail tanks with which the Regiment mobilised. These vehicles have a great range of special spares and equipment of which a large proportion was not issued until preparatory moves before embarkation had already begun. Reorganisation to a new war establishment in the field and the maintenance of Sqns which frequently operate more than fifty miles from the Regiment HA have made problems successfully overcome by Lt Reynolds, Whose cheerful and unsparing devotion to duty are always an inspiration to all his staff and to those who work with him. I strongly recommend him for the award of the MBE. 11th March 1947 Captain Quarter Master with seniority from 4th January 1947 27th July 1948 The War Office, 3oth July 1948 The following Officers are awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (Military) without gratuity - i3/i8i/j Royal Hussars. Original vintage lithograph Travel Poster - 100 Years of the first train journey in Switzerland. The construction and operation of Swiss railways during the 19th century was carried out by private railways. The first internal line was a 16 km line opened from Zürich to Baden in 1847. By 1860 railways connected western and northeastern Switzerland. The first Alpine railway to be opened under the Gotthard Pass in 1882. A second alpine line was opened under the Simplon Pass in 1906. In 1901, the major railways were nationalised to form Swiss Federal Railways. During the first half of the twentieth century they were electrified and slowly upgraded. After the Second World War, rail rapidly lost its share of the rail market to road transport as car ownership rose and more roads were built. From 1970, the Federal Government has become more involved in upgrading the railways, especially in urban areas and on trunk routes under the Rail 2000 project. In addition, two major trans-alpine routes — the Gotthard Railway and the Lötschberg approach to the Simplon Tunnel — are being rebuilt under the NRLA project.Country: Switzerland. Year: 1947. Artist: Friedrich Eduard Traffelet. Size (cm): 126.5x89.5. Very good condition, folded as issued, minor tears and scratches.

Attributed to Cornelis van Poelenburgh (Dutch, 1594-1667) - Venus, Minerva and Juno seated upon a cloud, an extensive landscape below, oil on copper30 x 22cm. The Peacock complained to Juno that while everyone laughed at his voice, an insignificant creature like the Nightingale had a note that delighted everybody. Juno, angry at the unreasonableness of her favourite bird, scolded him in the following terms: “Envious bird that you are, I am sure you have no cause to complain. On your neck shine all the colours of the rainbow, and your extended tail shows like a mass of gems. No living being has every good thing to its own share. The falcon is endowed with swiftness, the eagle, strength, the parrot, speech, the raven, the gift of augury, and the nightingale, with a melodious note, while you have both size and beauty. Cease then to complain, or the gifts you have shall be taken away.” Oil on copper. The paint layer appears stable, there is a damage in the upper left quadrant which paint has been scraped and the copper support is visible. There is extensive retouching across the painting. The varnish is clear and semi-matte. There are slight splits and minor wear to the frame.

Vitellius. Æ Sestertius (29.08 g), AD 69. Rome. A VITELLIVS GERM IMP AVG P M TR P, laureate head of Vitellius right. Rev. PAX AVGVSTI, S C across field, Pax standing facing, head left, holding branch and cornucopaie. Cf. RIC 157 (obv. legend); BMC p. 377. An incredible coin. A masterpiece sestertius of Vitellius. Uniform chocolate brown patina. Worthy of a record price. Superb Extremely Fine. Ex NCirc (May 1940, G34), 98782; G. Gillet Collection (Florange et Ciani, 28 May 1924); F. Gnecchi Collection; Lord Sidmouth Collection; C.E.G. Mackerell Collection (Sotheby's, 18 May 1906), 60; J. Tyszkiewicz Collection (Serrure, 25 June 1901). Vitellius was made Governor of Lower Germany by Galba. When the legions became disaffected from Galba's austere and strict rule, they renounced their allegiance to him and hailed Vitellius as emperor. Vitellius at first refused the imperial title, but he did take the name Germanicus and pledged to lead the revolt. Shortly thereafter the provinces of Britain, Gaul and Spain defected to him. Meanwhile in Rome Galba had been murdered and Otho installed as the new emperor by the Praetorian Guard. Otho offered to share the emperorship with Vitellius, but the latter, whose forces were already marching on Rome, refused. A decisive engagement, the Battle of Bedriacum, was fought between the two sides in the vicinity between Cremona and Verona, and Vitellius's forces were victorious. Despite losing at Bedriacum, Otho perhaps could still have won the war - he had the support of the formidable legions of Dalmatia, Moesia and Pannonia, as well as both the Praetorian Guard and the Roman fleet - but instead chose to avoid civil war by committing suicide. Once in Rome the Senate decreed Vitellius the usual imperial honors. The historians Suetonius, Tacitus and Dio Cassius do not record much positive about Vitellius's short reign, but he did implement some worthwhile and lasting changes (for instance, he accepted equites into the offices of imperial administration whereas before they had been open only to freedmen). Overall, though, his reign was irresolute, and Vitellius himself is described as lazy and self-indulgent.
Vespasian. Gold Aureus (7.36 g), AD 69-79. Judaea Capta Issue. Antioch, AD 72/3. IMP VESPAS AVG P M TRI P P P COS IIII, laureate head of Vespasian left. Rev. PAX AVG-VSTI, Vespasian nude except for cloak floating behind, standing facing, head left, holding spear and raising draped woman (Jewess?) r. wearing a 3-tipped crown, who clasps his right hand with hers. Hendin -; RIC 2, pl. 82, 1550; RPC 1924; BMC 504; Calicó 664 (this coin illus.). A great rarity! This is the plate coin in Calicó and is listed as R2. It is in fact much rarer. Toned. Choice Very Fine. From the S. Moussaieff Collection, This lot has been officially exported from Israel through the Israel Antiquities Authority. The eight years between AD 66 and 73 had been long and exhausting for Rome indeed. In AD 66, a revolt against Roman rule broke out in Judaea that had the potential to destabilize the Roman East. When Cestius Gallus, the legate of Syria, failed to crush the rebels and suffered the defeat of an entire legion, command of the war was transferred to the general Vespasian. Despite Vespasian's early successes against the rebels in Galilee, the conflict dragged on. It was a tiring, dirty affair, often involving massacre and atrocity on both sides. At the same time, the Jewish and Greek populations that had long lived side by side in the cities of Syria and Judaea fell upon one another. In the spring of AD 68, Vespasian pressed his advance into Judaea proper, systematically capturing rebel strongholds and crushing resistance on his inexorable march towards Jerusalem. Then, the unthinkable happened. On June 9, AD 68, the increasingly unpopular emperor Nero killed himself in order to escape a potentially worse fate at the hands of his senatorial enemies and Servius Salpicius Galba, the rebel governor of Hispania Tarraconensis. This event sparked the infamous Year of the Four Emperors (AD 69), in which Galba and his rivals, M. Salvius Otho and Aulus Vitellius embroiled the Roman world in bloody civil war as they struggled to claim the imperial purple. Vespasian joined the fray as the fourth imperial claimant and was ultimately successful, his forces crushing the legions of Vitellius at Bedriacum and taking possession of Rome in the late autumn of AD 69.While all of this chaos was taking place in the West, Vespasian had left his son, Titus, in command in Judaea. Titus continued to prosecute the war against the Jewish rebels and besieged a Jerusalem crowded with refugees in AD 70. After a grueling seven months, bringing the defenders to their knees through starvation, disease and factional conflict, Titus at last stormed the city, plundering the Temple and slaughtering or enslaving many of the survivors. Victory was in Roman hands and in AD 71 Titus embarked for Rome to share in a great triumph with his father. Nevertheless, pockets of Jewish rebels still remained in the countryside to harass the Roman victors. Only in AD 73, after the capture of the Dead Sea fortress of Masada and the mass suicide of its Jewish defenders, was the First Jewish Revolt fully repressed. Rebuilding after years of destruction in both the East and West could begin in earnest. The present gold aureus struck in AD 72-73 celebrates the much longed-for return of "Augustan Peace" to the Roman Empire. The reverse features Vespasian represented as a spear-wielding hero (this heroic quality is indicated by the emperor's nudity) raising up a female figure wearing a turreted headdress. She is normally described as Tyche (Roman Fortuna), the Greek personification of a city's fortune, but it is somewhat unclear how she should be understood here. On the one hand, she could represent the oikoumene — the entirety of the Greco-Roman world — freed from war by the victories of Vespasian (and Titus). On the other hand, since this coin was struck at Antioch, Tyche here may represent the fortune of that city in its capacity as the capital of the Roman province of Syria. As Judaea was under the jurisdiction of the Syrian legates and the province at large had suffered great upheavals over the course of the First Jewish Revolt, it would have been fitting to advertise the restoration of Syria’s fortune at the conclusion of the war. A further comment by David Hendin, American Numismatic Society and author of a Guide of Biblical Coins:Among all of the known coins of Vespasian, the only subjugated men or women depicted are Jews or personifications of Jews in relation to the Roman victory in the Jewish War (66 - 73 AD). Thus this rare coin is almost certainly a local-Antiochean-variation on the Judaea Capta theme, but instead suggesting that this victory was pointing to "The Emperor's Peace."Mattingly suggests that the kneeling woman is wearing a "crown of towers." If this was true it would suggest that the Jewess was also representing the city goddess of Jerusalem, in her defeat. However, this specimen is better centered and better struck than the RIC specimen and the crown appears to have three pointed tips rather than three rectangular towers as usually seen related to a city goddess figure.

*Letter of Marque. A rare manuscript letter of marque issued by the Admiralty to Captain David Browning, commander of the ship The Viper, dated 6th July 1779, large manuscript document in a clear clerical hand, brown ink on Whatman laid paper, with watermark, signed at the foot by Thomas Cox and Thomas Brookbank junior of the high Court of Admiralty of England, and Godfrey Lee Farren registrar, addressed to verso 'The Viper Capt. D. Browning French', creased where folded, small holes to folded corners, without loss, generally in very good condition, overall size 485 x 592 mm (19 x 23.25 ins) The use of letters of marque by the British king and his government allowed merchant vessels, or privateers, to seek redress for loss of goods and trade caused by hostile French ships, by the seizure of 'ships vessels and goods belonging to the French king' with instructions to 'bring the same to judgement in our high Courts of Admiralty of England', as this document states. The captain is authorized 'to set forth in a warlike manner' and 'by force of arms to apprehend seize and take the ships vessels and goods'. The letter also requires the captain to keep a journal of his activities, including a list of all his prizes, and their approximate value, as well as provide any information on the movements, locations, 'designs' and 'strength' of the French fleets and vessels. In return the captain may 'sell and dispose of such ships vessels and goods'. The Viper is carefully described in the document as a ship of about 365 tons, 'being Loop sterned, no head and one mast, mounted with twenty eight Carriage Guns carrying Shot of Nine pounds weight, and twelve Swivel Guns, and navigated with one hundred and twenty men'. It belongs to the port of 'Folkstone', it's principal owners being James Clark and David Major of Folkstone, merchants. Provenance: Contained within a folio family scrap album kept by Lionel S. Lewis, titled to inside front cover Family Record Book, and dated November 16th 1886, and including a variety of 18th and 19th century legal documents, share certificates, manuscript notes and letters, and photographs , all captioned and with extensive related handwritten notes. Many leaves are loose, and some chipped to edges with loss. The Lewis or Lewys family appear to originate from Stoke Gaylard in Dorset, with later generations resident in Thanet, Kent. Lionel Lewis's great grandmother was Mrs. Thomas Cramp, whose first husband was George Browning. The letter of marque is captioned by Lionel Lewis 'Letters of marque dated July 6th 1779 addressed to my Great-grandmother's brother-in-law'. The ship's captain David Browning would therefore be the brother of George Browning. (1)
A DIAMOND AND BLACK DIAMOND BANGLE, BY DE GRISOGNO & CHOPARDThe hinged bangle patinated with sections of circular-cut black diamonds within a surround of round brilliant-cut diamonds, mounted in 18K gold, diamonds approximately 20cts total, signed De Grisogno, signed Chopard, numbered 330261, Swiss assay mark, inner diameter 5.7cmThe house of de GRISOGONO was founded in 1993 by Fawaz Gruosi. As part of his first collection, he chose to incorporate the hitherto much neglected black diamond into his designs. Prior to this, black diamonds were mostly rejected in favour of their more brilliant white cousin. Grousi successfully changed the fate of the darkly sparkling gem by continuing to incorporate it into his designs as the signature of the de GRISOGNO high jewellery style. In 2002, Grousi decided to introduce watches to his brand. In order to finance the move, he capitalised on his familial connection with Chopard (Grousi is married to Caroline Scheufele-Gruosi, co-President of Chopard with her brother Karl-Friedrich Scheufele). He formed a partnership with Chopard where each party had a 49% share with the remaining 2% serving as a guarantee. The agreement allowed for Gruosi to retain control and to continue to determine the company’s creative direction. The partnership lasted five years and Grousi bought back full ownership of his company is 2007. The two pieces in this sale date from the period of the partnership as they are signed both “de GRISOGONO” and “Chopard”. They also bear the brand’s famous signature black diamonds.
