[WORLD WAR I]: EDWARD VIII (1894-1972) King of the United Kingdom January - December 1936. Later Duke of Windsor. A fine autograph manuscript, unsigned, four pages, 4to and slightly smaller, n.p. (London), n.d. (July 1919). The boldly penned holograph manuscript, with a number of corrections, is the draft of a speech made by the Prince of Wales at a dinner in honour of Marshal Foch following the end of World War I and states, in part, 'This is an occasion of such unique & historical interest that I find it very difficult to address such a so distinguished an assembly. It is indeed a great honour for me to be presiding here this evening & that it should fall to my lot to propose such a wonderful toast; it is almost impossible for me to find adequate words……to welcome so many famous allied commanders…..At this dinner are gathered together, comrades in arms drawn from many nations…..who have been engaged in a long & desperate (sic) struggle against the most powerful military combination that the World has ever known & who have emerged from the struggle completely victorious……France & Paris have already celebrated peace & our overwhelming victory; the other allied nations & their capitals will doubtless do the same. But just now we are celebrating it all in the British & London way & I feel that yesterdays triumphal pageant was a brilliant success. We feel that it represented the great war, that it represented victory in every sense of the word & that no one who was present could fail to carry away but the proudest & most inspiring memories which will last a life time……To me as one of the younger generation these memories will be specia particularly vivid as during my periods of active service in several theatres of war I often had the priviledge (sic) & good fortune of being closely associated with many of our allied armies army corps divisions & even regiments…….It is obvious that this last greatest of world struggles has broken all records from every point of view but I would venture to point out that never before has so large a number of allies been fighting & working together…..Now that the great war is over & the powerful enemies that have so long disturbed the peace of the World & menaced our freedom are finally overthrown & subdued we all rejoice to welcome here those who have shared with us the perils & sufferings of the trying & strenuous campaign & who now share with us the joy of our victory. Representative of every allied power are present this evening but there is one power whose representative has occupied a unique position. In Marshall (sic) Foch we salute the great captain…..His position as a Supreme C. in C. has no comparison in history either from the point of view of power or responsibility. In this position he has revealed a genious (sic) for war equal to the greatness of his task & the magnitude of his difficulties'. Together with a further selection of holograph notes, unsigned, four pages, oblong 4to and 8vo, n.p. (London), n.d. (July 2019), being the Prince's briefer manuscript notes prepared in composing his speech, with various corrections and the different sections each marked with an ink and blue indelible pencil line, the notes concluding with a passage in French, 'C'est pour moi un tres grand honneur et tres grande joie de vous acceuillir ici au nom du Roi et de boire a la sante des grandes nations allies dont vous etes les representants distingues Je n'ai qu'une pensée ce soir "vive nos braves allies"' and his Toast to Foch, 'The Commanders & representatives of the armies forces of our allies coupled with the name of Marshall (sic) Foch'. A rare manuscript with interesting content. A few slight stains and minor age wear to the preparatory notes, the manuscript speech VG, 2 Ferdinand Foch (1851-1929) French Marshal, a General and military theorist who served as the Supreme Allied Commander from March 1918. The 'triumphal pageant' which the Prince of Wales describes as having taken place the day before in the present manuscript was undoubtedly the Victory Parade Peace Day held in London on 19th July 1919. Although fighting on the Western Front had ceased in November 1918, peace negotiations would continue for many months and the Treaty of Versailles was not signed until June 1919. When negotiations were reaching their conclusion and a 'proper peace' was within sight, a peace committee was founded to decide how Great Britain would publicly mark the end of World War I and acknowledge the widespread feelings of jubilation within the country. With a Bank Holiday having been agreed upon, on the morning of the 19th July thousands of people gathered in London to participate in a spectacle, the likes of which had not been witnessed before. Almost 15,000 troops participated in the victory parade which was led by the Allied commanders Douglas Haig (British Commander-in-Chief), John Pershing (Head of the United States Expeditionary Force) and Ferdinand Foch (Allied Supreme Commander). The latter received the honour of being created a Field Marshal in the British Army on the same day and was evidently honoured at a dinner the next evening when the Prince delivered his speech. A monument to those killed and wounded, designed by Edwin Lutyens, was unveiled in Whitehall to mark the end of the victory parade. Although it was a temporary construction, another made from Portland stone and designed by Lutyens was to replace it in 1920 and, known as the Cenotaph, still stands today.

1976 Harley - Davidson SS250, 250 cc. Registration number not registered. Frame number 9E12091H6. Engine number 9E12091H6. Harley Davidson's attempts to capture a share of the world's market for lightweight and mid-size two stroke bikes was somewhat doomed from the start due to the impending, if not foreseen, influence of the environmentalists, who even today would be glad to see the back of the 2-stroke. The average well used Asian concrete mixer probably puts out more pollutants than all the Harley strokers ever made, but H-D got the message eventually and by 1978 none were listed in the catalogue. The largest 2 stroke offered previous to this was a 250cc version similar to the 1976 machine pictured here. So rare that the model is not even referred to in the official H-D archive on the writer's bookshelves, but the ubiquitous Internet does recognise the model, which appears to be a Yamaha inspired design. These lightweight Harleys were built by the Aermacchi factory in Italy under license with HD from the early 196's until the late 1970's. This example was sold by DK Motorcycles of Newcastle under Lyme to Paul Tonge of Barnsley in March 2016 as a trade sale who purchased a new wiring loom from the USA. Our vendor bought it in February 2019 an apparently restored condition. Sold with a NOVA document, an owner’s manual and various other paperwork, this rare machine will require some recommissioning.

Gerard Sekoto (South African 1913-1993) HEAD OF AN AFRICAN WOMAN signed and dated 68; label adhered to the reverse inscribed with the title and 'Maximum Fund Trust' oil on canvas laid down on board 59 by 48cm In 1947, Sekoto travelled to Paris to further his studies, he remained in exile for many years, mainly living in Paris. Sekoto attended the Académie Populaire d’Arts Plastiques in Paris from 1963 – 1965. Many of Sekoto’s works from his time in Paris evidence a concern with formal elements, influenced by his fellow students, who were exhibiting their work in Paris at the time. During his time in South Africa, Sekoto tended towards simplifying the facial features of his subjects, positioning them in stances where their faces were streamlined almost to the point of abstraction. This inclination increased during his time away from South Africa. This preference altered from 1963 to the mid-1970’s, when Sekoto repeatedly painted what became known as his ‘blue heads’, a series of busts primarily of women, most frequently with the use of a blue palette. Unlike his previous portrait studies, these busts did not rely on the direct observation of a sitter. In all of the blue head paintings, Sekoto loaded his brush and applied the paint in broad, flat strokes. Mostly, the composition is cropped just above the subject’s head and just below the collar bone, the neck elongated. Unlike his more typical busts, Head of an African Woman contains fewer contrasting colours and highlights. Rather than the white, beige and occasionally yellow highlights found on other busts, the highlights in Head of an African Woman, are subtler, and the artist has incorporated softer blues. The red umber and burnt sienna that Sekoto seemingly used straight out of the paint tube in other blue head paintings, are almost entirely absent here apart from a few select strokes on the headdress. Most of his busts share the same pose, where the subject faces the viewer directly, their eyes either directly connecting with the viewer, or cast downwards Many of the blue heads were produced around 1963, while Head of an African Woman is signed 1968. The subject in this painting wears a headscarf which adds height to her head. The headscarf is undetailed, painted with expressive brushstrokes, giving it the appearance of a headdress. She wears hanging earrings and her eyes connect directly with the viewer, although the slight hoods of her eyes give her otherwise confrontational expression, a demure quality. The vertical brushstrokes of navy paint emphasise her strength, and form a pleasing geometry with the triangular sloping of her elegant neck and sharp collarbones. Head of an African Woman portrays a regal quality in the sitter that other blue busts do not possess. In 1960, before he began painting his first blue heads, Sekoto produced a ballpoint pen on paper sketch of Miriam Makeba which he inscribed with the title Inspiration - Miriam Makeba. Makeba was known at the time as the ‘Queen of African song’ due to the inspiration she drew from the music of South Africa and other African countries. The songstress went into exile in 1959 and was accepted as an African icon by both those living in South Africa and those also in exile. In 1960, when the drawing was created, Makeba had just arrived in New York to much acclaim and photographs of her had featured on the cover of Time magazine. The pen drawing of Miriam Makeba features the same composition as Sekoto’s blue heads, with the singer directly facing outwards, the head cropped closely to the frame. It is possible that Sekoto’s pen drawing of Miriam Makeba, produced in 1960, may have been the inspiration for his blue head paintings of African women, which he began painting around 1963. It must be noted that some of the blue heads also resembled portraits that the artist made of his mother. Sekoto wrote of his practice of painting the blue heads that he wanted to express the beauty of the women of his own race, as opposed to the white female beauties that he felt were so abundantly portrayed by artists throughout history. A Rare Pair of Imperial Porcelain Vases IMPERIAL PORCELAIN MANUFACTORY, PERIOD OF ALEXANDER II (1855–1881) Height 31 cm (each). POA Of crater form, the bodies finely painted with garlands of flowers on mushroom coloured ground, the flared shaped rim and foot moulded with acanthus leaf ornament and gilded, the lower body with a knot braided gilt border on a cobalt blue ground, flanked by two square handles with ribbon-tied acorn garlands, on a raised circular foot, the reverse with green Imperial cyphers for Alexander II, one with incised initials “MD”. Provenance: Important private collection, Europe. The present pair of vases belongs to a group of objects made at the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory, which share a very particular form and flower decoration that distinguish it from other Imperial porcelain made during the reign of Alexander II. The squarish variation of the traditional campana form was modelled by August Spiess (1817–1904). For almost half a century starting from 1849, Spiess was the chief modeller at the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory, and his unique artistic vision and leadership was at the heart of the success of Russian porcelain during this period. He designed a variety of large vases, sculptures, candelabra and furniture which were mostly commissioned by the Emperor Alexander II and the Empress Maria Aleksandrovna. Examples of his oeuvre can be seen in the collections of the State Hermitage Museum, the Museum of the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory, St Petersburg, as well as in distinguished private collections around the world. Masterfully executed painted decoration of the vases can be attributed to a new generation of porcelain painters who came to prominence in the 1860s–1870s and gradually replaced the masters of the Nicholas I era. The Factory workshops were filled with young artists working in different genres, including the celebrated “flower painters” K. and F. Krasovsky, F. Lapshin, A. Morozov, A. Midin, G. Pishchulin and T. Spiridonov. During this period the focus was mainly on painting porcelain services, vases and plates, of which the present lot is a particularly fine example.
