A PAIR OF REGENCY HOLLY AND OAK HONEYSUCKLE MARQUETRY DECORATED SIDE CHAIRS ATTRIBUTED TO GEORGE BULLOCK, CIRCA 1817Decorated onto ebonised frames each 80cm high, 51cm wide, 50cm deep overall Provenance: Private Collection, Knightsbridge This pair of chairs is attributed to the cabinet-maker, sculptor and designer, George Bullock (d 1818). The bands of marquetry to the back rails of the present chairs share the same stylised honeysuckle, acorn and flowerhead sequence pattern of marquetry as a group of furniture sold from Great Tew Park, Great Tew, Oxfordshire, Christie's, 27th-29th May 1987, see lots 16, 17, 163 and 164, commissioned by Matthew Robinson Boulton (d 1842) of Tew Park and documented and invoiced from Bullock and Morant in 1817.  Marquetry borders form part of the Tracings by Thomas Wilkinson from the designs of the late Mr. George Bullock 1820. Evidence from Bullock's stock-in-trade sale, Christie's, 3rd-5th May 1819, and on documented furniture, including from Tew Park, 'suggests that the most frequently used borders and friezes used by Bullock were kept in stock and applied to appropriate pieces as required' (M. Levy, 'George Bullock's partnership with Charles Fraser, 1813-1818, and the stock-in-trade sale, 1819', Furniture History, 1989, p152). Other related features characteristic of George Bullock's workshop are the use of holly and oak marquetry, and the use of stylised roundels to the heads of the legs of the present chairs also seen on Great Tew Park furniture, see Christie's, 27th-29th May 1987, lots 53 and 57. See also Christie's, London, Important English Furniture, 27th November 2003, lot 183 (£11,950).    Condition Report: Both chairs with the marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. One of the roundels to one of the top rails is a well matched replacement.Old chips, splits and some minor losses. Old repairs - see images for details. Very few isolated old worm holes. Both chair's structurally solid overall. Old but later supporting corner blocks to undersides of feet. Upholstery to seats with some minor wear and marks. Ca. 375-300 BC.A skyphos with a body that elegantly tapers down to a circular, flat foot, and is adorned with two opposing handles that are oriented horizontally. The partially glazed surface of this cup bears a captivating black glaze with vegetal decoration. Gnathian ware is a type of Greek pottery that was popular during the Hellenistic period, characterized by its fine-quality, glossy black glaze and intricate decorative patterns. The intricate nature of the gnathian ware, combined with its beauty and durability, made it highly desirable amongst the ancient Greeks, who would often use it for various occasions. The skyphos, on the other hand, was a popular drinking cup used in ancient Greece. It was often used in symposia, or drinking parties, where guests would share wine and engage in philosophical or intellectual discussions. This skyphos would have been the perfect accompaniment to such an event. Size: L:100mm / W:130mm ; 135g Provenance: Property of a central London Gallery; formerly in a South English estate collection; acquired in the 1990s from Andre de Munter, Brussels, Belgium; previously in and old European collection.

A special edition produced to celebrate Red Bull's Third  F1 Constructors Title, one of only 30-UK cars, just 300 miles and an interesting history. In 2013, to celebrate their third Formula 1 Constructors’ World Championship title, Renault and Red Bull Racing released a new, limited-edition Mégane RS Red Bull Racing RB8. Painted in the exclusive Crépuscule Blue colour used by the Red Bull F1 team, combined with Platinum Grey details such as the F1 blade, door handle, door mirror housings and rear lip spoiler, the sports hatch also displayed Red Bull graphics at the rear and on the sides. The cars sat on fabulous, black 19'' Steev alloys with high-performance Bridgestone tyres. On the inside, the RB8 featured Red Bull Racing branding on the numbered aluminium sill guards and carpet mats and the logo also appeared on the headrests of the Recaro seats, which were trimmed in new leather/fabric upholstery. Mechanically, the new car was pretty well the same as the Mégane RS Trophy edition, featuring a 'Cup' chassis, limited-slip differential, and 265bhp and 360Nm of torque squeezed out of a 1,998cc, 16v, four-cylinder turbo. The remarkable example on offer here is #791 of 891 worldwide, but it's one of only 30 right-hand drive cars that made it to the UK, with one being retained by Renault. #791 was selected by RBR to be specially prepared and offered as a gift from Sebastian Vettel and RenaultSport to Calerm Yoovidhya, the Thai national and majority share holder of the Red Bull empire, to commemorate their multiple F1 Championship victories. The car is currently owned by Rob Marshall who acquired it in 2020. At the time, Rob was Red Bull Racing's Chief Engineering Officer, having previously been Chief Designer working alongside Adrian Newey, providing Sebastian Vettel with the required tools to win his four World Championships. Having spent most of its life in storage, the unrepeatable low-mileage of 300 is fully warranted, and despite having not gone anywhere, it has been serviced as required and recently had a cambelt change dictated by time rather than mileage.A potent, limited-edition ‘hot hatch’ with a story to tell that will be at home with any F1 fanatic or eclectic collector. Your early inspection is welcomed and encouraged. SpecificationMake: RENAULTModel: MEGANE RENAULTSPORT RED BULL RACING RB8.Year: 2013Chassis Number: VF10ZY10649924840Registration Number: L563 YAVTransmission: ManualEngine Number: Co21352Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 308 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Slate Grey - Cloth / HideClick here for more details and images

Lot 707

On offer from a private Collection, this Immaculately restored Morris Mini Pick-Up is about as good as you will ever find.Introduced in January 1961, the Mini Pick-Up was based around the same stretched platform as its Panel Van sibling. Similarly exempt from sales tax as a commercial vehicle, it sported a pressed steel grille, sliding windows and external door hinges throughout its 22-year production life. Initially powered by an 848cc four-cylinder, it could be specified with the more powerful 998cc engine from1967 onwards (both A-series units being mated to the same 4-speed manual transmission). Benefiting from a 4"-longer wheelbase, taller rear suspension turrets and underfloor fuel tanks, the Pick-Up/Panel Van derivatives were arguably even more fun to drive than their saloon equivalents. Mini became a standalone brand during October 1969, with parent company, British Leyland, dropping the compact saloon and its derivatives from the Austin and Morris ranges, a change signified by simplified badging and a new logo. The otherwise unchanged Pick-Up could still be had in 850 or 1,000 guises.Dating from 26th February 1962, this pretty little Morris Mini Pick-Up found it's way into the hands of our vendor in January 2011 and underwent a comprehensive and meticulous nut and bolt restoration, leaving no detail overlooked. Now very smartly-presented in Willow Green with black trim, it retains its original 848cc engine and 4-speed gearbox, and can truly be described as excellent in every area, one of the best we have ever seen. Part of our vendor's significant Collection, it's kept safe and dry, regularly maintained, with a small history file including the Heritage Trust Certificate, and used for a bit of fun and the occasional trip to Goodwood. For collectors and enthusiasts alike, 6396 MU presents a golden opportunity to acquire a meticulously restored 1960s classic, offering more than its fair share of nostalgia.SpecificationMake: MORRISModel: MINIYear: 1962Chassis Number: MAV4217735Registration Number: 6396 MUTransmission: ManualEngine Number: 197961 Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 6365 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: BlackClick here for more details and images

Finished in classic colours, diligently-maintained and one of just 544 right-hand drive examples.Introduced in 1991, the Continental R was the first Bentley in 26-years to not share a body style with a concurrent Rolls-Royce and was inspired by the highly collectable Continental R-Type of the 1950s. The elegant two-door coachwork was styled by John Heffernan and Ken Greenley whose penmanship gave the Continental R an air of refined brutality, akin to a rugby player in a Saville Row suit. By 1997 the turbo-charged 6.75-litre V8 had been tweaked which meant a 0-60mph time of 6.3 seconds, a remarkable feat for a car weighing in at over 2.4 tonnes. Further enhancements included a liquid-cooled charge cooler along with an improved Zytek EMS3 engine management system improving throttle response and fuel efficiency along with a digitally controlled turbo over-boost.At the time of its launch, it was the most expensive production car of its day with a list price in 1996 of £187,000 - the equivalent of £356,000 today. As a hand-built car that was beyond Crewe’s production capacity, just 544 right-hand drive examples of the Continental R were built from a production total of 1,292 between 1992 and 2001. Whilst later versions also proved popular, it's the Continental R that is widely regarded as the saviour of the Bentley name, proving without doubt, that there was a future for the badge with buyer demand for a luxuriously-appointed sporting coupé steeped in heritage, and just on the right side of ostentation. The Continental R was perhaps the last example of a car built to be the best regardless of cost, with a healthy disregard for the strictures of the industry’s obsession with the bottom line.First registered on 1st January 1997, this Continental R was one of just 43 examples produced in right-hand drive during that year. Finished in the traditional Bentley colour of Ascot Green but with an unusual shade of tan leather upholstery, known officially as Saddle, specified from new. The non-standard features, as confirmed by the original factory specification in the accompanying history file, include fully-veneered waist rails, a Chestnut console and Burr Walnut dashboard, colour-keyed door mirrors, electric rear blind, an Ascot Green steering wheel rim, painted headlamp surrounds, Bentley wing vents and extended runners to the passenger seat.Sold by us in 2019 to our vendor, the car’s exemplary service history has been added to by the retention of marque specialists RR&B of Bromsgrove for maintenance work since. The current, advisory-free MOT is valid until 4th May 2024 and the mileage was a shade under 76,000 miles at the time of cataloguing. Once a Ferrari-driving, London-dwelling barrister, until the purchase of a country house with ample garaging, this was the first Bentley our vendor had owned. Naturally he became smitten, and four years and some 6,000 miles later, he is keen to experience the shorter wheel-base Continental T, so we have the privilege to offer this old friend once again.SpecificationMake: BENTLEYModel: CONTINENTAL RYear: 1997Chassis Number: SCBZB15C3VCH53382Registration Number: P899 GPBTransmission: AutomaticEngine Number: 86760L410M/TTT Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 76000 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Saddle LeatherClick here for more details and images

DALWHINNIE 1966 36 YEAR OLD HIGHLAND SINGLE MALT Dalwhinnie is the highest distillery in Scotland and, as such, it also boasts the lowest average temperature range. The obvious benefit of this is a lower “angel’s share” lost from casks in their warehouse, but it also keeps their external worm tubs cool, causing the spirit vapour from the stills to condense very quickly. Combine this with a distillation process which strives to minimise copper contact, and Dalwhinnie distillery produces a heavy, sulphury new make spirit that needs to mellow in refill wood for 15 years before its signature sweet, honied style fully emerges.Bottled: 2002Bottle Number: 619 / 150047.2% ABV / 70cl

A RARE SET OF 18TH-CENTURY JACOBITE WINE GLASSES the bell-shaped bowl with flared rim, engraved with trailing display of open displayed rose head flanked by twin buds and foliage, on an air twist stem and circular foot with folded rim, broken pontil to underside Dimensions:15cm high, rim 7cm, foot 6.5cm Note: Note:The engraving to this and the larger wine glass(lot 351) bear a striking resemblance, and perhaps suggest that this rare set of wine glasses is also by Engraver C.This rare set of six Jacobite wine glasses is remarkable as 'sets' of Jacobite glassware are virtually unheard of. This may be due to the majority of Jacobite glasses being made as singles or pairs, or that sets have regularly been split up over the years. The latter seems unlikely as there would always have been great status and value in keeping a complete set together, suggesting groups like this were very rarely made. It is tantalizing to consider that these glasses must have sat on a Jacobite table, belonging to a supporter who was very confident in his position and status, and who had a close group of companions he could share his views with. As such a statement of wealth, taste and prominence within the Jacobite community, it can be assumed they were owned by an important high-ranking Jacobite. For comparable sets see Lyon & Turnbull ‘Furniture & Works of Art’ 2nd May 2018 lot 10 (sold £6500) and Bonhams ‘The Scottish Sale Antiques & Interiors’ 21st August 2013 lot 262 (sold £7250)

Guards) fitted with original steel clip and ring suspension, contained in a fine contemporary red leather case, extremely fine and rare thus £4,000-£5,000 --- Provenance: Dix Noonan Webb, March 2011. Anthony Dunn was born at Coolbannagher, Queen’s County, Ireland, and enlisted into the Grenadier Guards at London on 20 August 1809, aged 25 years. He joined Lieutenant-Colonel Jones’ Company in the 3rd Battalion but later transferred to the 2nd Battalion. He served in Lieutenant-Colonel Cooke’s Company at Waterloo and was wounded at Quatre Bras on 16 June 1815. Private Dunn died, presumably as a result of his wounds, on 18 April 1816; his widow, Margaret Ford, received his share of the Waterloo prize money on 28 November 1820.
At Quatre Bras on 16 June, ‘the arrival of the British 1st Infantry Division (Guards Division, Cooke) gave Wellington sufficient strength to counter-attack and Jérôme, whose skirmishers were now west of Quatre Bras, was forced to retreat and give up possession of Bossu Wood to the British Guards. When the Guards and other allied units emerged from the wood, they were met with heavy fire from French infantry and an attack by 6th Lancer Regiment (and possibly the 1st Chasseurs) of the 2nd Cavalry Division (Piré), the Guards being caught in line and forced to flee back into the wood. This cavalry attack and taking the Bossu wood caused high casualties among the British Guards. There was some further skirmishing between allied light companies and the French voltigeurs and cavalry screen, but the battle was over. By 21:00, when the fighting stopped, the French had been forced to give up all of their territorial gains.’

ATTLEE, Clement (1883-1967). As It Happened, London, 1954, 8vo, illustrations, original cloth. Reprint. ANNOTATED AND HIGHLIGHTED IN PENCIL BY ANTHONY EDEN THROUGHOUT.ATTLEE, Clement Richard (1883-1967).  As It Happened. London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1954, 8vo (215 x 140mm). Half title, half tone frontispiece portrait of the author, half tone illustrations. Original scarlet cloth, spine lettered in gilt (spine faded, without the dust-jacket). Provenance: Anthony Eden, 1st Earl of Avon (modern armorial bookplate loosely-inserted). "First published 1954. Reprinted 1954" (from verso of title). ANNOTATED AND HIGHLIGHTED IN PENCIL BY ANTHONY EDEN THROUGHOUT. For example, on p.90 (commenting on Attlee's speech to the Geneva Institute of International Relations in 1934), Eden writes: "Playing party politics while an official, as no doubt in [the remainder illegible] ..."; on p.96 (commenting on the printed passage 'following the First World War when it had been laid down that there was no danger of war for ten years'): "Winston's ten year rule"; on p.105 (commenting on Attlee's recuperation in North Wales when Germany invaded Poland): "I had forgotten he was away"; on p.165 (commenting on opposition to the nationalisation of the iron and steel industries): "He [i.e. Attlee] always attributes the lowest motivation to his opponents & assumes the highest in himself"; on p.170 (commenting on Marshall Aid): "& I who suggested it to Ernie [Bevin] in his room in the House"; and on p.172 (commenting on Attlee's claim that Western Europe 'is today a collection of disunited elements lying between two great continental Powers'): "Much stronger than that." In 1955, Attlee contested the general election against Anthony Eden who was seeking a mandate as the new leader of the Conservative Party following Churchill's retirement in April of the same year. It resulted in a victory for the Conservatives who achieved the largest party share of the vote at a post-war election: a triumphant vindication for Eden. Attlee, having led the Labour Party for an unparalleled twenty years and widely regarded as one of Britain's greatest 20th-century Prime Ministers, retired as Leader of the Labour Party to enter the House of Lords as Earl Attlee and Viscount Prestwood. He was succeeded by Hugh Gaitskell.A note on the illustrations in the Anthony & Clarissa Eden section of this catalogue (lots 1-89). Anthony Eden, like any true bibliophile, annotated his books almost entirely in pencil. Consequently, they can be a little difficult to read in the illustrations. They are generally much clearer to read in the books themselves and many of the more significant are recorded verbatim in the descriptions.

Lot 24

A George III satinwood, tulipwood crossbanded, purplewood and fruitwood marquetry breakfront secretaire bookcaseCirca 1785With boxwood and ebonised stringing, the repeating acroterium-form or waved ovolo cornice inlaid with flowerheads and acanthus spray angles, above one large central glazed panelled door and two smaller conforming end doors, each door encompassed by a foliate, floral and tendril trail inlaid surround, the central door enclosing two adjustable shelves, each end door enclosing three adjustable shelves, with a cedar panelled backboard, over a secretaire drawer inlaid with ribbon tied floral garlands with oval paterae and bellflower pendants, centred by a Vernis Martin oval of a reclining maiden depicted in the manner of Angelica Kauffman, enclosing seven pigeon holes, five cedar lined drawers and a gilt tooled leather surface, above three long graduated oak lined drawers, flanked to each end by a concave bay comprising one deep oak lined drawer inlaid with a bouquet of assorted flowers over one door inlaid with a husk draped fluted and reeded Neoclassical urn surmounted by an anthemion, on a foliate pedestal issuing scrolled acanthus, on six flute inlaid tapering square section feet, each end inlaid with a ribbon tied husk swag centred by a sunflower head roundel, inside one drawer is a metal plaque which reads: 'Antique Furniture from NORMAN ADAMS LTD., 8-10 Hans Road, London, SW3', approximately: 135cm wide x 48cm deep x 208cm high, (53in wide x 18 1/2in deep x 81 1/2in high)Footnotes:ProvenanceFormerly with Norman Adams Ltd., London. It is not known when the offered lot was at Norman Adams but it seems most likely that, judging from the metal plaque applied to the inside of one drawer, this was some time during the 1970s or 1980s.A very similar George III satinwood and marquetry secretaire bookcase to the offered lot, albeit with canted lower end bays as opposed to the more impressive concave ones of the present example, is illustrated in G. Beard and J. Goodison, English Furniture, 1500-1840, 1987, Oxford, fig. 6, p. 229. This piece of furniture in fact sold Christie's, London, 9 December 1971.Another closely related variant, which is dated circa 1785 and was gifted by Sir Claude Phillips to the Victoria and Albert Museum, appears in M. Tomlin, Catalogue of Adam Period Furniture, 1972, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, fig. U/13, pp.'s 180-181. The latter also features in F. Collard, Regency Furniture, 1987, Woodbridge, pl. 8, p. 68.Both of these associated models share a number of characteristics with the current version. They all have repeating acroterium-form cornices, conforming overall proportions, identical lower section configurations and similar marquetry, as well as flute-inlaid feet. The plain glazed panelled doors of the offered bookcase appear to match those on the Beard and Goodison one, whilst the inlay on the Victoria and Albert example is visibly closer, both in terms of its design and spirit, to that of the present lot than on the former comparable.Whilst the marquetry is closely related on all three bookcases, it appears to be the case that its execution is perhaps superior on the present version. This view is arguably confirmed by the fact that a large proportion of this remarkable work on the latter is inlaid onto curved, or more precisely concave, surfaces rather than flat ones, which is of course a more technically demanding feat. In addition to this, the bouquet of flowers, abundant floral garlands and Neoclassical urns all seem to have been better 'drawn' and more fully expressed than their equivalent areas on the Victoria and Albert example. However, there are a couple of elements on the offered bookcase which are either absent or different from the other two. The first are the door panel surrounds on the upper part of the present lot which have foliate tendril inlay throughout, that is lacking from the plain frames and astragals of the other upper sections. The second is the central point of the secretaire drawers. On the offered model this area is accentuated by an elegant oval Vernis Martin panel painted in the style of Angelica Kauffmann, whereas with the comparables a simpler oval patera or oval fan medallion serves as the main focus there instead. The Beard and Goodison one is almost certainly the same bookcase, albeit perhaps with replaced handles, which featured in a special exhibition hosted at Christie's, January 1973. And this is exactly the one illustrated in a catalogue commemorating the event, which is entitled Fanfare for Europe, The British Art Market, 1973, Sotheby's Publications, p. 175, and is evidently an entry from Jeremy Ltd, an antique dealer then based at 255 King's Road. It is interesting to note that a further similar cabinet or bookcase is also referred to in the text of this commemorative catalogue. At the time of publication this other variant is described therein as: 'originally forming part of the Gubbay colllection at Trent Park and now on exhibition at Clandon Park, Surrey.' Deriving from ancient architectural antecedents, the acroteria pattern cornice surmounting all of these 1780s bookcases might be a reference to similar motifs employed by both James 'Athenian' Stuart (1713-1788) and Robert Adam (1728-1792) over the course of the two preceding decades of the 18th century. Examples of such evidently include furniture provided for Lady Spencer by Stuart and the State Bed supplied to Osterley Park by Adam, Ibid, fig. U/13, p. 181.The beautiful flowing and elegant Neoclassical designs of the marquetry and their superb execution, allied to the presence of distinctive fluted feet, suggest the possibility that the better examples within this group of cabinets were perhaps executed by the renowned partnership of William Ince and John Mayhew. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP For auctions held in Scotland: Lots will be moved to an offsite storage location (Constantine, Constantine House, North Caldeen Road, Coatbridge ML5 4EF, Scotland, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. `Malheureusement, dans le regime que nous subissons actuellement, les services rendus au pays, si éminents soient-ils, ne comptent guère en regard des intérêts de parti´ DE GAULLE CHARLES: (1890-1970) French General of World War II. Later President of the French Republic 1959-69. T.L.S., `C. de Gaulle´, one page, 4to, n.p., 26th October 1950, to General Ingold, on his printed letterhead bearing `Le Général De Gaulle´ to the heading, in French. A very interesting thought by De Gaulle, expressing in a bitter way how the services given to the homeland are valued few years after the end of WWII, and how they have to suffer such behaviour. I understand and share your feelings on learning the measure that has just affected Roger Malfette. ‘remember that the body is not immortal and therefore we should not be too attached to it’ GANDHI MAHATMA: (1869-1948) Indian political and spiritual leader during the Indian independence movement. A very fine A.L.S., Bapu, in Gujarati, two pages, 8vo, Satyagrahashram (Gandhi Ashram), Sabarmati, 21st March 1925, to his friend Behram Navroji Khambatta, in Gujarati. Gandhi writes demonstrating both practical advice and spiritual teaching, 'Your son has my blessing. I see no need to panic and leave for Europe. We must have faith in God. I see no objection to allowing a local doctor to operate if he is willing to take the risk. Have you consulted Nana Deshmukh? Tell Jal to be brave. Keep me informed. How is your health? If the prison doctors don't want to try the operation or if you are uneasy yourself, you can go to Europe. Do not consider my letter as an order or a refusal. We must not act impulsively, and remember that the body is not immortal and therefore we should not be too attached to it. This is what I would like to share with you'. A letter of compassionate content in which Gandhi transmits the values of his faith. With the ink stamped reference number 7536, as well as the pencil reference CW 5012, to the head of both the recto and verso. The handmade paper is very slightly irregularly cut to the top edge, VG

A wonderful original Disney sketch of Mickey Mouse, made for a studio employee in the 1940s DISNEY WALT: (1901-1966) American animator, Academy Award winner. An excellent, original pencil drawing signed by Walt Disney, one page, 4to, n.p. (Burbank. California), n.d. (1940s). Disney has executed a swift, although highly appealing, image of the head of Mickey Mouse, undoubtedly his most famous creation. Boldly signed ('Walt Disney') with a large signature immediately beneath the sketch. Matted in pale brown within an oval aperture alongside a photograph of Disney in a smiling head and shoulders pose and attractively framed and glazed in a modern decorative frame to an overall size of 20.5 x 14.5. A wonderful original drawing, both rare and highly desirable. One light, minor stain to the head of the page, not affecting the image or signature, VGProvenance: Accompanied by a typed letter of provenance signed by Michael Miller, dated 22nd March 2023 and stating, in part, 'My mother, Suzanne (Suzie) Miller started working at Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California on the 21st of October 1940. She worked there until 1944 in the eight wing animation building, and would work around artists, animators and story men…..Walt's office was also used for conferences with directors, animators, artists and any creative team would share ideas in order to create the next big Disney hit. After a meeting, my mother asked Walt for a signature, and Walt kindly smiled and drew this sketch of Mickey and signed it in pencil. She kept it since the 1940's and was then given to me, Michael Miller (her son)'.

‘Your ideas……on the odious ownership of land, on the horror of patriotism, of wars and of the armed peace it engenders, are very dear to me’  TOLSTOY LEO: (1828-1910) Russian writer, regarded as one of the greatest authors of all time. A lengthy, interesting L.S., Votre ami et frere, Leon Tolstoy, seven pages, 8vo, n.p. (Yasnaya Polyana?), 8th February 1908, to [Sergei Zimaco, a Franco-Polish journalist] ('Dear Friend and brother'), in French. The letter is penned in the hand of Sophia Tolstaya and states, in part, 'You ask me if I share your ideas expressed in your letter and the brochure addressed to Nicholas II. I will try to answer this question as frankly and seriously as possible. Your ideas on property, especially on the odious ownership of land, on the horror of patriotism, of wars and of the armed peace it engenders, are very dear to me and I have made for a quarter of a century everything I could to popularise them as much as possible. To fight against the terrible superstition of landed property, I wrote to the head of the government, offering him the fine role of putting himself at the head of this restitution to the vast majority of the people of their most sacred rights. I repeat the same steps again now…..As for militarism, I am happy to say that every day I receive letters from my unknown friends, true Christians, who suffer imprisonment and the misery of their families, for the refusal of military service…..So that as regards your fundamental principles and the results to which you tend, I completely agree with you. I think I can say that however small the results obtained by people who try to follow Christian principles to their full extent, these results are greater than those which the anarchist communists have hitherto achieved. This brings me to the heart of the matter and the only difference of opinion that exists between us. You say that the social problem is above all an economic problem. I do not think so. The social problem, as you say, or the coming of the kingdom of God as you understand it and as I understand it is much larger. The economic problem is only a very small part of the arc of the circle. There are the relations of the sexes, the education of children, nationalities, the way of acting towards assailants, madmen, animals and a number of personal actions which do not enter into the economic problem, and which are the most important for humanity. All these problems cannot be solved by solving the economic problem. The solution of these problems and of all those that may arise before man is not in economic laws, but in the spiritual realm. Their solution is that given by the apostle John in his epistles. The solution is in the revelation of love. I say “revelation” because I believe that love is not a prescription but an interior law of man's life; that love is the only means for man to attain happiness, to which he tends naturally. This law was revealed not only by Christianity, but by all the sages of the world: Egyptians, Chinese, Indians, Greeks etc. But it has only been accepted and understood by a very small minority. The history of mankind is nothing but the progressive realisation of this law, the acceptance of this law, the replacement of selfishness with love, not to reward them from beyond the grave, but for the true happiness of this life. This, my dear friend and brother, is my creed with which I lived the happiest last part of my life, and with which I await death at every moment, without desiring it and without being able to fear it'. With an autograph note in Zimaco's hand to the verso of the final page, '[Tolstoy]…consoled me for the many setbacks I received from certain French journalists in wanting to expose them….and defend the true doctrine of Jesus Christ'. A letter of very fine content. Some light overall age wear and staining, most evident to the final page. About G
