Vladimir Beilin (Russian, 20th C.) "USSR/US Cosmonauts/Astronauts Exploring" Original Watercolor painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Combination Cover for the Russia Space Exploration block of four stamps issued May 29, 1992. Even when vast political differences separated the United States and Soviet Union, scientists from both nations' space programs hoped for mutual cooperation. Their first great success was the precedent-setting Soyuz-Apollo joint mission in 1975, which saw astronauts and cosmonauts exchange handshakes and gifts -- and even share a convivial meal of borscht -- in their docked spaceships. But during the next 16 years, marked by events in Afghanistan and the Middle East, that first small tear in the iron curtain seemed to have been sewn closed forever. Today, however, as a result of momentous changes in the former USSR, hopes for mutual exploration of space have been reborn in a planned joint American and Russian mission to Mars. The art shown here depicts that hope-for 21st C. mission, showing astronaut and cosmonaut reaching toward each other in friendship .. against the ruddy backdrop of a planet named for the ancient Roman god of war. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 17.75 x 14 in. Unframed. (B13802)

Ren Yu (Chinese, B. 1945) "Orchid" Signed upper left. Watercolor. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. Orchids are one of Mother Nature's most spectacular creations. The very name of this flower conjures images of exquisite corsages adorning elegant evening wear and humid hothouses where, by the efforts of determined horticulturists, exotic plants produce delicate blossoms year-round. In the Orchidaceae family, there are nearly 35,000 species and 800 genera, one of which is the Paphiopedilum or "Lady Slipper." A terrestrial or ground-growing genus with approximately 50 species, Paphiopedilum is native to the warm, moist expanses of eastern Asia and Indonesia. There are as many orchids as there are places for them to grow and they all share one trait in common: their extraordinary beauty. Image Size: 18.5 x 17.25 in. Overall Size: 24.5 x 22 in. Unframed. Ren Yu (Chinese, B. 1945) "Year of the Ox" Signed lower right. Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the Lunar New Year Series 32c The Year of the Ox stamp issued January 5, 1997. Dating back to the 27th C. B.C., the Chinese calendar is a combination of symbolism and mathematical complexities. Twelve animals are associated with the calendar -- the rat, ox, tiger, hare, dragon, serpent, horse, ram, monkey, rooster, dog and boar. During the Han Dynasty (206 B.C. - A.D. 220), the Chinese calendar was organized into repeating 12 year cycles, with each year designated by 1 of the 12 animals. The Chinese commonly refer to the year by its animal name -- 1997 was the Year of the Ox. Those born in a given year are said to share that animal's character traits. Thus, people born during the Year of the Ox are strong, proud, eloquent and self-sacrificing. One of the myths surrounding the origins of this system tells of a great race held between the animals for the Heavenly Jade Emperor. The participants were assigned their places in the calendar according to how they finished. The rat finished first while the boar came in last. Image Size: 15.75 x 13.5 in. Overall Size: 17.75 x 15.5 in. Unframed. (B15387)
Yang Wenqing (Chinese, B. 1951) "Year of the Rabbit" Signed lower middle. Mixed Media on Rice Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the 33c The Year of the Hare Lunar New Year Series stamp issued January 5, 1999. The Chinese commonly refer to the year by its animal name -- 1999 is the Year of the Rabbit. Those born in a given year are said to share that animal's character traits. Legend has it that when Lord Buddha departed from Earth, all the animals were summoned to bid him farewell. Twelve animals showed up and the rabbit was fourth in line. Thus, people born during the Year of the Rabbit -- 1903, 1915, 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987 and 1999 -- are not only affectionate, they're also sentimental, cautious, forgiving and successful in business. Used concurrently with the Western calendar (Gregorian), the Chinese calendar is considered to be yin-yang li, a "lunar-solar calendar." Since the 12 months of the Chinese calendar contain only 29 or 30 days each, the year does not add up to the 365 days of a solar year. To compensate, a double month is added every 30 months. The Chinese year begins with the second new moon after the winter solstice, sometime between January 21 and February 20. New Year's Day is a time of great celebration and is the most important day in the Chinese calendar. Image Size: 14 x 11.75 in. Overall Size: 14.5 x 12.5 in. Unframed. (B15389)

Original vintage travel advertising poster for Ostend, a coastal city and municipality, located in the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium. It was issued by the Belgian State Railways and features a painting by Belgian artist, academic and soldier Alfred Bastien (1873-1955). Bastien is well known for his grand Panorama of the Yser Front in 19th century tradition, a painting that measured 115 meters in length and 14 meters in height and was initially exhibited in Brussels. In the mid 1920s, a permanent building was constructed in Ostend, Belgium to house the Panorama along with a multitude of props and decor. The intention of moving the Panorama to Ostend was to capture a share of British war-tourism, since most British coming to visit relatives' war graves arrived by steamer in Ostend before proceeding to the area of the Ypres Salient. The Panorama opened at Ostend in 1926. The sketch in the poster, by the artist, features the burning and shell-blasted Cloth Hall in the First World War (1914), a medieval building in Ypres, Belgium. The building now houses the In Flanders Fields Museum. Condition: Good condition, folds and creases all restored, linen backed. Tom McNeely (Canadian, B. 1935) "Three Wise Men Traveling to Bethlehem" Signed and dated lower right. Original Watercolor. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canadian 39c Angel stamp issued October 29, 1986. In the nearly two thousand years since it occurred, many stories have been associated with the birth of Christ, but the Story of the Magi is among the most magnificent and inspiring for Christians around the world. Its powerful appeal lies in the reverence with which these great men paid homage to Christ's divine authority. Before the birth of the Christ Child, Three Magi -- wise men named Melchior, Balthazar and Gaspar -- set out from their faraway homelands following a special, dazzling star. This star led them to Bethlehem where the Christ Child had been born. The three Magi each bore a special gift for the Child. As they knelt in adoration of the Savior, one presented Him with Gold, the next gave Him Frankincense, and the third Myrrh. Since that time, the gifts they bestowed on the Child have sparked great interest among biblical scholars. Many now believe that gold was symbolic of God's love for his Kingdom on earth. Frankincense -- an extremely sweet-scented spice -- is thought to represent prayer and hope for the Kingdom of Heaven. Finally, Myrrh -- which is taken from a tree bearing thorns -- symbolizes suffering and foretells of Christ's sacrifice which enabled the Kingdom of Earth to share in the glory of the Kingdom of Heaven. Image Size: 17.5 x 15.25 in. Overall Size: 27.25 x 22 in. Unframed. (B09192)

Wan Weisheng (Chinese, B. 1932) "Swan Swimming in Pond" Signed lower right. Original Tempera painting on Watercolor Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the China 8f Whooper Swan stamp issue of November 18, 1983. The grace and beauty of the Mute Swan has enchanted man for centuries. Gliding cross crystal waters with its long neck held in a graceful curve, this elegeant swan arches its ivory wings over its back like a feathered sail. As this ornamental swan swims through the water, it will from time to time plunge its head and neck below the surface, nibble on tender aquatic plants, and then suddenly raise up, tossing back a shower of crystal droplets onto its snow-white plumage. Captivated by this bird's magnificent beauty, the Chinese partially domesticated the Mute Swan to decorate the parks and estates of China. Truly the picture of beauty and elegance, this majestic Swan glides across the waterways of China in noble silence. These beautiful birds are often seen swimming in pairs for they select a mate for life. The male is fiercely protective of his mate and the nesting site they have chosen. When threatened, the male Swan will take an aggressive posture by bowing and arching his shimmering plumes over his back, and softly hiss a warning. Both the male and the female share the incubating duties, each taking turns so the other may feed. After hatching, the light-gray baby swans or cygnets, often ride on their parents' downy backs, cradled in their arched wings. Indeed, the mute Swan in a symbol of striking beauty as it swims gracefully through the tranquil ponds of China. Image Size: 14.5 x 17 in. Overall Size: 15.25 x 17.75 in. Unframed. (B08239)

This excerpt from Neil Armstrong's conversation with President Richard Nixon, during a phone call made from the Oval Office of the White House to the surface of the Moon, established the astronauts' desire to share their historic lunar landing with the rest of the world. To emphasize that the Apollo 11 mission was one of peace, they left behind a gold olive branch as well as a small silicon disk that was microscopically-etched with goodwill messages from leaders of 73 countries. As ambassadors from Earth, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin proudly became the first visitors to a strange and distant land that has long intrigued peoples from every nation and walk of life. John Swatsley (American, B. 1937) "Steamboat Phoenix (1809)" Signed lower right. Original Oil on Illustration Board painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 25c Steamboat Phoenix stamp issued March 3, 1989. In the beginning of the steamboat era, two gentlemen by the names of Fulton and Livingston had a monopoly on steamboat operation in the New York area. Also interested in steamboats was Livingston's brother-in-law, an inventor by the name of John Stevens, Jr. In order to raise money to finish a steamboat, the Clermont, Fulton and Livingston offered to take Stevens as a partner, for a price. He refused to pay, and in turn told them he was building a boat, the Phoenix, that was much superior to the Clermont. If he wasn't given a partnership, he would put his boat into competition with the Clermont and ruin their business. Fulton and Livingston offered Stevens a one-fifth share, but he had decided he wanted to be recognized as the inventor of the steamboat. Thus, Stevens launched the Phoenix in defiance of the Fulton-Livingston monopoly. He worked his steamboat on the Hudson and in New Jersey waters for close to a year, and when Fulton-Livingston succeeded in having the Phoenix legally tied up, he decided to move her to the Delaware, far from their territory. It was a weighty decision, for it meant the craft would have to swim through more than 150 miles of open ocean. Nevertheless, even though she was a boat designed to run in protected waters, the Phoenix set out to sea, with Captain Moses Rogers as her master. Thirteen days later, the Phoenix reached Philadelphia. The successful completion of her journey earned the little side-wheeler her place in American history. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. But just now we are celebrating it all in the British & London way & I feel that yesterdays triumphal pageant was a brilliant success. We feel that it represented the great war, that it represented victory in every sense of the word & that no one who was present could fail to carry away but the proudest & most inspiring memories which will last a life time……To me as one of the younger generation these memories will be specia particularly vivid as during my periods of active service in several theatres of war I often had the priviledge (sic) & good fortune of being closely associated with many of our allied armies army corps divisions & even regiments…….It is obvious that this last greatest of world struggles has broken all records from every point of view but I would venture to point out that never before has so large a number of allies been fighting & working together…..Now that the great war is over & the powerful enemies that have so long disturbed the peace of the World & menaced our freedom are finally overthrown & subdued we all rejoice to welcome here those who have shared with us the perils & sufferings of the trying & strenuous campaign & who now share with us the joy of our victory. Representative of every allied power are present this evening but there is one power whose representative has occupied a unique position. In Marshall (sic) Foch we salute the great captain…..His position as a Supreme C. in C. has no comparison in history either from the point of view of power or responsibility. In this position he has revealed a genious (sic) for war equal to the greatness of his task & the magnitude of his difficulties'. Together with a further selection of holograph notes, unsigned, four pages, oblong 4to and 8vo, n.p. (London), n.d. (July 2019), being the Prince's briefer manuscript notes prepared in composing his speech, with various corrections and the different sections each marked with an ink and blue indelible pencil line, the notes concluding with a passage in French, 'C'est pour moi un tres grand honneur et tres grande joie de vous acceuillir ici au nom du Roi et de boire a la sante des grandes nations allies dont vous etes les representants distingues Je n'ai qu'une pensée ce soir "vive nos braves allies"' and his Toast to Foch, 'The Commanders & representatives of the armies forces of our allies coupled with the name of Marshall (sic) Foch'. A rare manuscript with interesting content. A few slight stains and minor age wear to the preparatory notes, the manuscript speech VG, 2 £800-1000 Ferdinand Foch (1851-1929) French Marshal, a General and military theorist who served as the Supreme Allied Commander from March 1918. The 'triumphal pageant' which the Prince of Wales describes as having taken place the day before in the present manuscript was undoubtedly the Victory Parade Peace Day held in London on 19th July 1919. Although fighting on the Western Front had ceased in November 1918, peace negotiations would continue for many months and the Treaty of Versailles was not signed until June 1919. When negotiations were reaching their conclusion and a 'proper peace' was within sight, a peace committee was founded to decide how Great Britain would publicly mark the end of World War I and acknowledge the widespread feelings of jubilation within the country. With a Bank Holiday having been agreed upon, on the morning of the 19th July thousands of people gathered in London to participate in a spectacle, the likes of which had not been witnessed before. Almost 15,000 troops participated in the victory parade which was led by the Allied commanders Douglas Haig (British Commander-in-Chief), John Pershing (Head of the United States Expeditionary Force) and Ferdinand Foch (Allied Supreme Commander). The latter received the honour of being created a Field Marshal in the British Army on the same day and was evidently honoured at a dinner the next evening when the Prince delivered his speech. A monument to those killed and wounded, designed by Edwin Lutyens, was unveiled in Whitehall to mark the end of the victory parade. Although it was a temporary construction, another made from Portland stone and designed by Lutyens was to replace it in 1920 and, known as the Cenotaph, still stands today.

COLLINGWOOD CUTHBERT: (1748-1810) British Admiral, a notable partner to Horatio Nelson in several of the British Naval victories during the Napoleonic Wars. Concluding page of an A.L.S., Collingwood, one page, 4to, n.p., 18th May n.y. (1808?), to an unidentified Lord, headed 'Postscript to letter of May 18th'. Collingwood writes, in full, 'I wish when your Lordship goes to town, you would push endeavour to push the decision about the Saint Domingo Prize money - I have been shabbily off about prizes - the things taken here of most consideration are the Turks - and they are lying at Malta, where I am told their cargoes are selling under the direction of Commissioners appointed for that purpose - the service in the Archipelago has been most severe during the winter - a great many men lost, & many prisoners who have been wrecked amongst the Turks - and the vessels they have sent down are rotting at Malta. They give droits to some people - who make snug things of it - what I get would not maintain me - were I not so much at sea that I am often without necessaries - and I cannot make applications about money - or anything that may have the appearance of taking care of myself.' With blank integral leaf. Some very light, minor creasing and age wear to the edges, VG £200-300 On 15th June 1808, whilst at sea off the coast of Cadiz, Collingwood wrote a letter to his wife stating, in part, 'A decision was lately given in my favour in the Court of Admiralty, on the claim of Sir J. Duckworth, Louis, and Cochrane, to share the St. Domingo prizes among themselves, and exclude me.' 1998 Jaguar XK8 Coupe, 3996 cc. Registration number B4 JXK. Chassis number SAJJGAED3AR031241. Engine number CC9807161545.Living up to expectations can be a burden. Consider the handsome Geoff Lawson-penned XK8 that followed in the wheeltracks of such automotive icons as the XK120 and immortal E-type. Like the E-Type before it, the XK8 made its debut at the Geneva Salon - that of 1996 - and, from launch, was available in either Coupe or Convertible guise. Like its immediate predecessor, the XJS, the original XK8 was more of a Grand Tourer than an outright sports car. It also had the distinction of being the first Jaguar to be powered by an eight-cylinder engine. This then, was a cat with strong DNA but also its own distinctive endearing personality. At the time of the newcomer's unveiling, Jaguar Cars was owned by Ford, as was Aston Martin, and it made sound economic sense for the XK8 and similarly targeted DB7 to share the same platform; which itself was derived from that of the outgoing XJS. The biggest of many differences between new and old, was the adoption of Jaguar's second generation independent rear suspension system, previously found on the XJ40 Saloon. Prior to 2003, power came from either a normally aspirated (XK8) or supercharged (XKR) 4.0-litre version of the company's DOHC V8 AJ26 engine. The all-aluminium 32-valve unit displaced 4.0 litres and produced 281bhp, an output good enough for a top speed of 156mph. Power was transmitted via a ZF five-speed automatic gearbox to the limited-slip differential, while traction control was standard.JXK was first registered on the 8th September 1998 having been sold by Jaguar Lancaster of Sevenoaks in Meteorite Silver with Charcoal leather interior with the registration number of S935 RKJ. In January 2000 they sold it to Dr Jackson for £42,750 with a mileage of 7,650, by September 2004 it was with Mr Haley of London and the service that month was at 47,682 miles. Our vendor purchased it in August 2006 with a mileage of 57,000 miles and by now it wore the cherished number it now has. Little used these days, the mileage has only risen to some 60,000 miles, the wheels were powder coated in 2018, last serviced in the same year with a suspension overall at the cost of nearly £1,000. A new battery has just been fitted and a new MOT issued for this auction.Sold with the V5C, MOT, large history folder with full service history and two keys.
Howard Koslow (American, 1924 - 2016) "Firemen Raising the American Flag" Signed lower right. Acrylic on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. On the morning of September 11, 2001, the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history struck America at its core after four airliners were hijacked. Two were flown into the twin World Trade Center towers in New York City, one hit the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and a fourth was brought crashing down into a Pennsylvania field by its heroic passengers. More than 2,800 people were killed. That day ordinary people performed extraordinary deeds, defying danger and death to save others. In a valiant rescue effort, courageous fire fighters in New York City charged up the stairs of the flaming towers of the World Trade Center, and many sacrificed their own lives when the buildings collapsed. A sense of grief and loss spread across the nation, evoking a surge of patriotism and a heartfelt willingness to share. Thomas Franklin of the Bergen, New Jersey Record captured the moment in his photograph of New York fire fighters Dan McWilliams, George Johnson and Billy Eisengrein raising the U.S. Flag amidst the rubble of the World Trade Center. In the days following the disaster, the Flag continued to serve as a symbol of respect, love, and national unity. The Stars and Stripes sprouted like wildflowers after a spring storm -- on houses, stores, trucks, cars, and lapels. Simultaneously, the inspirational image of fire fighters raising Old Glory atop a heap of rubble, like that of Marines raising the Flag on rugged Iwo Jima during World War II, became a symbol of the indomitable American spirit. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20.5 x 18 in. Unframed. (B16957)
Liu Yusu (Chinese, 20th C.) "Year of the Dragon" Watercolor. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 60¢ Happy New Year 2000 Souvenir Sheet issued January 20, 2000. One of 12 different animals representing the 12-year repeating cycle of the Chinese lunar calendar, the dragon reigns supreme in 2000. The mystical dragon has long been held in high esteem by the Chinese. Many legends offer explanations for how these creatures became associated with the calendar. One states that the Heavenly Jade Emperor summoned all the world's animals to participate in a race. The 12 fastest competitors would receive a place on the calendar according to the order in which they finished. The rat finished first while the dragon came in fifth. Those born in a given year are said to share that animal's character traits. People whose birth years are represented by the dragon are believed to be intelligent, gifted, and full of vitality and enthusiasm. Image Size: 9.75 x 12 in. Overall Size: 10.75 x 14.5 in. Unframed. Shannon Stirnweis (Arizona, New York, New Hampshire Oregon, B. 1931) "Fort Rodd Hill" Signed lower left. Oil on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canada 32? Fort Rodd Hill stamp issued June 30, 1983. Fort Rodd Hill, a coastal artillery installation, was constructed by the British between 1895 and 1900. It was named after John Rashleigh Rodd, First Lieutenant on H.M.S. Fisgard at the time of the 1847 Royal Navy survey of Esquimalt Harbor. The Fort Rodd Hill batteries which consisted of three coast artillery batteries, were part of a system of coastal defenses designed to protect Esquimalt Harbor, which had served as a British Naval Base since 1864. In addition, the fort provided protection for the growing commercial ventures of Victoria Harbor. In 1893, Canada and Great Britain reached the decision that batteries constructed by the Canadian government in 1878 were obsolete, and they further agreed to share the cost of constructing and equipping a new defense system. This new defense system was to be manned by British gunners who would be paid by Canada. The new Fort Rodd Hill gun batteries were designed for medium range firing of up to ten thousand yards. Seachlights were also mounted at the quick firing batteries so the soldiers could fire their weapons by either night or day. With only a few changes in types and dispositions of gun equipment, the coastal defense of the harbor remained unaltered until World War II, when the defenses were updated. However, despite modifications, by 1956 technical advances in the art of defending and attacking coastal targets made the Fort Rodd Hill weapons obsolete. In 1962, the fort was transferred to transformed into a national park. Image Size: 19.25 x 16.5 in. Overall Size: 23 x 19.75 in. Unframed. (B08179)
