A set of four Royal Worcester plates date code for 1876, gold quatrefoil on black ground to outer edge of a thin pink band, the centres of the plates bearing hand painted decorations of a single arched viaduct, a mountainous highland lake scene, a kneeling figure with pitcher fetching water and a lakeside sunset scene, all with floral and foliate gilt surround, purple factory mark to base, gilt scribed B over 160 with initials H.T., 9in. (22.8cm.) diameter. (4) See Illustration.
[MIDDLETON, Thomas Fanshawe (1769-1822, editor)]. The Country Spectator. Gainsborough: Printed by Messrs. Mozley and Co., Tuesday 9 October - Tuesday 21 May 1793. Numbers I - XXXIII bound in one [although pagination and signatures continuous], 8vo (208 x 130mm). (Without the half title, occasional light spotting and staining.) Modern old-style calf-backed marbled boards (extremities rubbed). Among the fictional contributors to, and characters in, this satirical work are Querulous Moody, Poplicola Merlin, Sir Timothy Tickle-pitcher and "Mutabilis." On p.183 is an illustration of "The Thermometer of Popularity" whose readings range from a low of "Utter Aversion" to a high of "Caresses." The work is dedicated "To the Inhabitants of the Town of Gainsborough." The editor is chiefly remembered for his association with Coleridge (number XVI contains a sonnet which refers to him) and as the first Bishop of Calcutta.
