An 18th Century Carved and Pierced Ivory Fan, in the chinoiserie style, the guards quite delicately carved, the painted vellum leaf mounted à l'Anglaise with various depictions of daily life. In the centre, a lady holds a fixed fan before a seated gentleman, his servant shading him with a large branch of foliage, to whose right a woman carries a water pitcher, whereas to the left a solitary figure is seated in contemplation. The verso shows another landscape with distant mountains, a figure to the foreground holding a fixed fan. Guard length 9.75 inches or 24.5cm Purchased at Bonhams London on May 16th 1980 for £90.00The monture is grubby, the leaf is a little tired and is rubbed on the folds. The recto retains good colour, the verso is very yellowed.

Jay Hanna Dizzy Dean, also known as Jerome Herman Dean, was an American professional baseball player. He played in Major League Baseball as a pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Browns. A brash and colourful personality, Dean was the last National League pitcher to win 30 games in one season. After his playing career, he became a popular television sports commentator.
