Lot 308

A large group of Worcester, New Hall, Regency tea and coffee wares and 19th century tea wares

Lot 2073

Artist: Norman Rockwell (American, 1894 - 1978). Title: "Saturday People". Medium: Original color collotype. Date: Printed 1973. Dimensions: Overall size: 24 x 30 in. (610 x 762 mm).Lot Note(s): Signed in pencil, lower right. Light cream wove paper. The full sheet. Fine impression. Very good to fine condition. Comment(s): Norman Percevel Rockwell was a 20th-century American painter and illustrator. His works enjoy a broad popular appeal in the United States for their reflection of American culture. Rockwell is most famous for the cover illustrations of everyday life scenarios he created for "The Saturday Evening Post" magazine for more than four decades. "Saturday People" is an oil painting that Rockwell painted for McCall's magazine's cover of October 1966. The collotype was published by Circle Gallery, Ltd. and printed by Arthur Jaffe, New York. In May 1966, Rockwell began an illustration for 'The Saturday People,' a short piece of fiction for McCall’s magazine. The story, written by Rita Madocs, relates the observations and fantasies of thirteen-year-old Leslie, who lives with her widowed mother in midtown Manhattan. The stress of losing her father and ambivalence toward her mother’s suitor inspire fantasies, as well as fears, which are given form in Rockwell’s painting. Saturday visits by the mother’s suitor are announced by the presence of his hat left on a hall table. The hat, which Leslie describes as “like some velvety underground animal, a dark-green Tyrolean mole, perhaps, a blushing feather behind one of its concealed ears,” appears twice in Rockwell’s painting. Eleven celebrities who occupy Leslie’s imaginative fantasies are pictured with Leslie. The wide, 24 x 41 inch painting was published as a two-page spread in McCall’s, large enough for readers to identify the many celebrities who move through Rockwell’s picture from left to right. The not-so-famous, including Rockwell (understating his own celebrity) and his wife Molly, walk from right to left. Moving from left to right: Actor David McCallum; New York City Mayor John Lindsay; Soprano Maria Callas; Actor Sean Connery; Pianist Van Cliburn; Drummer Ringo Starr; Prince Philip of England; New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller; Comedian Jonathan Winters; Composer/Conductor Leonard Bernstein; Actor Tallulah Bankhead. Lot 785

Artist: Oliviero Toscani (Italian, b.1942). Title: "Andy Warhol, Carnegie Hall Studio, New York City". Medium: Vintage photogravure. Date: Composed 1973. Printed 1974. Dimensions: Overall size: 17 1/4 x 13 in. (438 x 330 mm). Image size: 10 13/16 x 9 1/8 in. (275 x 232 mm).Lot Note(s): Signed by the sitter [Andy Warhol] with an autograph signature in black marker; signed in the plate by the photographer. Intended edition of 950 (of which all were printed?). High-grade white Bristol archival paper. Full margins, as issued. Fine, quality printing. Fine condition. Comment(s): Very scarce. Quite possibly printed in a run of far less than the 950 proposed. The printing was derived from a high-resolution negative produced with Polaroid Type 105 Positive/Negative film. In the early 1970s Polaroid launched a project to show that this film process could successfully compete with gelatin silver prints as a fine art medium. The company gave cameras plus a generous stock of film to leading photographers of the day. Their output was then published by the Polaroid Corporation. Image copyright © Oliviero Toscani. An English officer, Captain Lyons of the Bengal Infantry, seated smoking a hookah, watching nautch girls performing, with a retinue of Indian musicians and servants Calcutta, by an Indian artist, after an original painting of 1801 by Captain Crockatt of the Bengal Engineers, circa 1810-12gouache on paper 380 x 530 mm.Footnotes:ProvenanceGeneral Sir George Nugent, 1st Bt. (1757-1849), Commander-in-Chief, India, 1811-13, & Maria, Lady Nugent.Thence by descent via the Nugents to the current owners.PublishedA. L. Cohen (ed.), Lady Nugent's East India Journal, Oxford 2014, pl. 4.A close copy by an Indian artist working in Calcutta of an original painting, dated 1801, by Captain Crockett, an Engineers officer, now in the British Museum (1946,0624.4). The inscription on the reverse of this painting reads: Drawn by Capt Crockatt Engineers Bengal Establishment 1801 - The officer represented is Captain Lyons - Infantry Bengal Establishment. As a depiction of the lives of East India Company officers and their relations with Indians, this painting must rank alongside the well-known depictions of, for instance, John Wombwell smoking a hookah (Lucknow, 1790), William Fullarton (Murshidabad or Patna, 1760), Zoffany's painting of the Impey family with Indian musicians, the Delhi painting of Sir David Ochterlony, or Colonel Polier watching a nautch, by Tilly Kettle. or in a more female context, the two paintings of Lady Impey with her Calcutta household (illustrated in W. Dalrymple (ed.), Forgotten Masters: Indian Painting for the East India Company, London 2019, p. 49; or in S. C. Welch, Room For Wonder: Indian Painting during the British Period, 1760-1880, New York 1978, p. 23, fig. 3).Despite the British presence, and the British artist of the original, it is the group of Indians who are the main focus, in all their variety: from the senior servants with their silver chauris, the presumably middle-ranking under-butlers, such as the figure on the left who stands demurely with his arms folded across his stomach; the female figures with their green robes; the musicians; and the sepoy cradling his musket lurking in the doorway at the back.Lady Nugent, at least, seems to have felt a similar fascination on her arrival in Calcutta and afterwards, impressed by the numbers of servants (even for someone who was, unlike us, used to having servants), their varied livery, and their manner towards the English. On visiting General Hewett's house in January 1812, she noted:We found Sepoy Grenadier Sentinels at the gate; they are fine looking men, and I like their dress extremely - it has a very military appearance. The yard in front of the house was filled with servants [...] The footmen are called Kitmatgars - we dress ours in white, with scarlet sashes, or rather white and scarlet mixed or twisted together - scarlet bands to their turbans - and silver crescents in front - this dress is really very pretty. [This livery can be seen in lot 173, Lady Nugent in her palanquin]. The servants were all drawn up in order, and when we got out of the carriage they all made salaams down to the ground. The whole of the party attended us into the house - the inferiors arranging themselves in the hall, the superiors attending us up to the drawing room. (Cohen, p. 37).Once they had started on their tour up-country, she recorded that 'Sir George and I could not help laughing at the number of our attendants; we were surrounded by silver stick men and kitmagars, the soubadar or native officer of the escort was at a distance, and the havildar, or sergeant, waited a small distance behind him' (Cohen, p. 74) - this on the bank of a river in the middle of nowhere. She was also struck by the importance in Indian society of the hookah, 'which are indeed an extraordinary sort of things'. Early on she commented that 'neither Sir George nor myself find the smell very disagreeable, or insupportable [...] 'I have, however, set my face against young men smoking, as it is in reality an odious custom.' Not long after this, she tried it herself, at the suggestion of another English woman. 'I tried to smoke it, as she assured me it was only a composition of spices, but I did it awkwardly, swallowing the smoke, and the consequence was I coughed all night'. Lot 55

Oil on panel (Dimensions: 23cm x 33cm (9in x 13in)) Provenance: Lord Shuttleworth, Leck Hall, Private Collection Note: During the seventeenth century, a group of Dutch artists found themselves lured by the light of Italy. One such artist was the landscape painter Willem de Heusch, who lived in Italy from circa 1640-45 until returning to his hometown of Utrecht by 1649. This period had a profound impact upon his work: going so far as to start signing his work G D Heusch, adopting the Italianate form of his name by using a ‘G’ rather than a ‘W’; Guglielmo. Upon his return to Holland, he became Dean of the Guild of St Luke; fellow Dutch landscape painters Jan Both and Cornelis van Poelenburgh were also on the council. Like his teacher Jan Both who he often emulated in his compositions, de Heusch painted romantic visions of the Campagna; the Italian countryside around Rome. Unlike Claude Lorrain, whose work from his time in Italy was highly influential to de Heusch, Willem rarely introduced biblical scenes into his landscapes, choosing to depict the utopian dream instead. The previous original red chalk sketch and this oil on panel of an Italianate Landscape evokes the Arcadian world that de Heusch is known for. These two expressive pieces have only recently been reunited for the first time after hundreds of years apart, when the sketch was purchased from a major international auction house in New York and the oil on panel was purchased from the collection of an English Lord. The slender and delicate trees, which gracefully entwine themselves amongst each other, obscure the background, provoking a desire in the spectator to journey onwards into the distance. In the foreground, a shepherd herds three donkeys homewards along a rocky track.

I have just (with my Guinness prize) bought two new rings from Cameo Corner ... the amount I shall pay for these will be either £175 or £180. '... One ring is an amethyst surrounded by diamonds, the other a ring of small pearls with a few tiny diamonds interspersed. ... Incidentally, I changed the amethyst ring, and the pearl ring that I bought last autumn, for a topaz & pearl ring, and three half hoop pearl rings. These came to £25 less than the others, but I shall, when I have been televised, get another ring which will increase that sum. etc. etc. ...' Edith Sitwell was well-known for her extravagant taste in jewellery, and this correspondence shows how seriously she took the question of valuing her new purchases, very many of them from Cameo Corner in Museum Street, London. Dame Edith (who, as ever, insists that she should be properly identified as 'Dame' or 'D.B.E.'), describes the individual purchases in her letters, and is most particular to ensure that she has full insurance cover when travelling abroad. The letters reveal not only an enthusiastic collector but a remarkably business-like personality. The letters are variously written from Renishaw Hall, The Sesame and Imperial Club, and Chicago, and all bear the received-stamp of the Leeds branch of the insurers, some being annotated with financial calculations in pencil.

NO RESERVE Ramus (Petrus) Scholarum Mathematicarum, libri unus et triginta, first edition, woodcut device on title, woodcut initials and a few diagrams, some light foxing, browning and water-staining, creases to some leaves, inscription and ink library stamps to title, modern vellum-backed marbled boards, [Tomash & Williams R10; Smith, Rara arithmetica, p.335; VD16 L534], 4to, Basel, Heirs of Eusebius & Niklaus Bischoff, 1569.⁂ "This book, consisting of thirty-one chapters, was part of Ramus' attempt to reform the teaching of mathematics. The first three chapters deal with the history of mathematics, mainly from the time of the Greeks, and were actually published two years previously, in 1567, as Proemium mathematicarum. The next two chapters are a commentary on one of Ramus' earlier works, Arithmetica (an elementary text on arithmetic), first published in 1555 but with many editions since that date. Chapters 6 to 31 are a commentary on Euclid's Elements, with Ramus pointing out the useful applications. In a remarkable eight-page preface to this work, Ramus addresses Catherine de' Medici and pleads with her to provide a building for the professors of what came to be called the Collège de France. He indicates that this building is needed so that the professors would no longer have to lecture in the back streets of Paris. He also asks that she follow the lead of her Italian relatives and put her personal library in this new building rather than keeping it in the provinces. Ramus was well aware of the library and the current situation of the queen mother because he had taken shelter with her when, in 1562, his Protestant beliefs caused him to be driven out of Paris" (Tomash & Williams).Provenance: Library of the Franciscan Minims, Tyrol, Austria (inscription on title: Ex lib F.F. Gene Boyer (American, 20th C.) "Jimmie Rodgers" Signed lower right. Acrylic on Illustration Board Painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 13c Jimmie Rodgers stamp issued May 24, 1978. Jimmie Rodgers grew up listening to the rhythm of the rails and absorbing the lore of lusty, free-wheeling railroad men. At eighteen, he was a full-fledged brakeman on the run between Meridian, Mississippi, and New Orleans. His early interest in music was influenced by the vocal styles of blacks who worked on the rails with him. Rodgers' career on the tracks was brought to a sudden halt by tuberculosis in 1925, and he took up music full time. Locally, Jimmie was known as the "Singing Brakeman." His big break came in 1927 when he test recorded in Bristol, Tennessee, for the Victor Talking Machine Company. Within a year, the "Singing Brakeman" became the nation's number one recording star, with a steady succession of history-making country hits -- songs of the glistening rails. His buoyant, good-hearted songs eased the misery of those people, who in the Depression years felt their country had failed them. Jimmie showed them the richness, strength and worth of America through his music. Stalked constantly by tuberculosis, Jimmie died tragically in 1933 at the age of thirty-five. More than anyone else, Jimmie Rodgers is credited with propelling country music toward its unparalleled popularity. Fittingly, in 1961, he became the first person inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Image Size: 14 x 13 in. Overall Size: 16.5 x 16.5 in. Unframed. (B05982)

Thomas Koether (New York, Florida, Europe, Australia, b. 1940) Monumental Abstract Painting. Titled: "Great Behemoth Rock" Dated: '87 Oil on Canvas. Signed and dated lower right. Overall Size: 66 x 82 in. (364 - 4275)In 1960, Koether was accepted to the school of the Art Institute of Chicago at age 20. In 1963 Koether Moved to New York City and started going to the Art Students League. In June of 1966 he graduated with honors from N.Y.U. and was accepted to the N.Y.U. graduate school of Communications Arts in Cinematography under Haig Manoogian. In 1970, he moved to Paris to take a studio space at the American Center on Boulevard Raspail. In July of ’71 Koether went to Italy and did a lot of drawing and watercolors. In Florence he met Italian art restorers and learned a lot about restoration from them. That same year, he participated in a group show at the American Center and sold several pieces – one to director Henry Pillsbury. The work from Ibiza and Paris dealt with attempts to delineate abstraction as a form with his own experience of his own abstractness – landscapes and still-lives of his own psychic and emotional space. This work has a post-psychedelic aspect. In 1974 Koether moved back to New York and worked in N.Y.C. as an art restorer with Roger Ricco Associates. That year, he had a one man show at Ajanta Gallery on East 9th Street. In 1976, Koether moved to Australia and established an art conservation business and worked on the 5 major collections of Oceanic art in Australia.
