(1)Provenance: By direct family descent, to the present owner.Note: Jeremiah O'Donovan (1871-1942), priest and novelist, was a native of Kilkeel in Co. Down.Ordained for Clonfert diocese, he was appointed administrator of St Brendan's Cathedral,Loughrea. An enthusiastic advocate of temperance, self-help, and the Irish revival, he promoted his views in articles and lectures. With financial help from Edward Martyn, he set about redecorating Loughrea Cathedral with works by Irish artists such as Sarah Purser, John Hughes, and the Yeats sisters Elizabeth and Susan.Embittered by clashes with a new bishop, O'Donovan left Loughrea and eventually the priesthood, settling in London where he became Vice-Warden of Toynbee Hall, a Christian socialist educational centre in the East End. He changed his first name to Gerald, married and became the father of three children; in later years he had a long-lasting relationship with the novelist Rose Macaulay.O'Donovan's literary reputation rests on his novels, especially Father Ralph (1913), which deal trenchantly with the conflict between individual freedom and the narrowness of Irish Catholic life in his time.Dermod O'Brien (1865-1945) was born at Mount Trenchard House near Foynes in Co. Limerick; both his grandfathers - William Smith O'Brien and the first Lord Monteagle - are prominent figures in Irish national history. He is chiefly remembered for his landscapes and portraits, of which this depiction of a courageous if controversial Irishman is a fine example.

2006 Bentley Arnage RL                                            PLEASE NOTE: This lot possesses a MOT certificate valid until 30th November 2017. - One former keeper and 4,800 recorded miles- 1 of just 383 'Arnage RL by Bentley Mulliner' cars (each of which was built to special order)'Launched in 2001, the Arnage RL is the culmination of world-class coachbuilding that spans generations. It is a car that takes personalisation to a new level, where the vehicle is a canvas on which you can paint your vision. With its extended wheelbase, 2 inches (50mm) to the front and 8 inches (200mm) to the rear compartment, the RL retains the classic Arnage profile whilst offering even more palatial comfort for the passengers. But make no mistake; this is a car to drive. The turbocharged 6.75-litre V8 engine, harnessed by a highly engaging automatic gearbox, makes this an experience impossible to miss. The Arnage RL gave its owners the opportunity to realise virtually anything imaginable - all designed and handcrafted by the most skilled automotive artisans in the world. These are people who understand not only the heritage of Bentley, but also the pleasures of luxury in a contemporary world. From fashioners of burnished walnut and fine hides to the audio experts who can turn the interior of a Bentley into a concert hall, to specialists who can bring the cinema or television to the rear seat' (Bentley Motors).Just 383 examples of the 'Arnage RL by Bentley Mulliner' (to give the model its full title) were handbuilt from 2001 - 2011. None were to standard specification because each one was personalised according to the whim and taste of its first owner. With a clientele that included heads of state, A-list celebrities and the mega wealthy, the Crewe firm sought to ensure that its flagship four-door saloon / limousine could offer an unrivalled interior ambience. As well as a 250mm wheelbase (though, 450mm and 728mm stretches were available too), the Arnage RL gained uprated brake and suspension systems. Powered by a thoroughly revised, twin-turbocharged version of Bentley's iconic 6.75-litre V8 engine allied to automatic transmission, it was reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 6.2 seconds and 155mph (unless armoured to B6 specification, a c.£250,000 option!) Less ostentatious than a Rolls-Royce Phantom but in many ways no less beguiling to be chauffeured around in, any Arnage RL remains a very special motor car.Offered for sale with clear title by order of the High Court, this particular example has formed part of an extensive London-based private collection since 9th February 2012 when it was purchased from Rolls-Royce Motor Cars London for £75,000. Finished in Dark Sapphire Pearl with Cream leather upholstery and Dark Blue carpets, 'X19 AAA' wears Jack Barclay number plates. An HPi check reveals that (a) the Bentley has had one former keeper and (b) it is not recorded on their stolen, finance, security watch or insurance write off databases. While a UK Government Vehicle MOT History search shows that the Arnage RL was MOT tested at 3,317 (4/6/2010), 3,377 (24/6/2011), 4,206 (5/4/2012), 4,334 (5/3/2013), 4,365 (28/3/2014) and 4,566 (31/3/2015) miles. Now displaying some 4,800 miles to its odometer, this bespoke luxury saloon will hopefully possess a fresh MOT certificate by the time of sale. Offered for sale with owner's handbook, service handbook (recording services at 1,351, 4,172, 4,334 and 4,362 miles), Rolls-Royce Used Vehicle Proforma Invoice, quick reference guides and sundry Jack Barclay invoices.

Lot 511

A HIGHLY RARE AND IMPORTANT ENGLISH JACK OF PLATE, CIRCA 1580-90 formed of small overlapping square plates of iron with cropped corners, secured by lines of diagonal, vertical, or in some cases horizontal stitches of crossbow twine through holes at their centres between the inner and outer layers of a fabric doublet of 'peascod' fashion with a frontal opening situated slightly to the right of centre and originally closed by laces passing through pairs of reinforced holes, an upstanding collar devoid, like the edges of the arm-openings, of plates, and a short skirt, the whole enclosed between two outer layers of fine linen canvas overlying felted woven wool on the outside and a coarser canvas on the inside of the garment, and decorated with green (perhaps originally white) woollen tufts at the intersections of the stitches (the outer fabric discoloured, worn through at points and split at the shoulders and some points of the waist and the base of the collar) 75.5 cm; 29¾ in Provenance Sir William ffarindon, Worden Hall, Lancashire (sold by auction 1948) A private English collection Literature Alexander de Cosson & William Burgess, 'Catalogue of the Exhibition of Ancient Helmets and Examples of Mail', Archaeological Journal, Vol. XXXVII, 1881, p. 591 Ian Eaves, 'On the Remains of a Jack of Plate Excavated from Beeston Castle in Cheshire', Journal of the Arms and Armour Society, Vo. XIII, no. 2, September 1989, p. 137, n. 29) The jack of plate - sometimes referred to in contemporary documents as a 'steel coat', a 'plate coat' or a 'coat of plate' - was a uniquely British defence first recognisably mentioned in English and Scottish records of the second quarter of the 16th century (Eaves 1989, pp. 85-6 & 144, n. 48), p. 145, n. 52). The inventory of the holdings of the Office of the Armouries taken on the death of Henry VIII in 1547 mentions 'a Northerne Jack covered with lynnen' and three 'Northern Jackes made of Canvas and plate' (Harold A. Dillon, 'Arms and Armour at Westminster, the Tower and Greenwich', Archaeologia, Vol. LI, 1888, pp. 52 & 57). Although defences of this kind ceased to be manufactured towards the end of the 16th century (Eaves 1989, p.86 & 148, n. 60), their use persisted into the early years of the following century. In 1622 some forty examples were issued from the Armouries of the Tower of London for use in America by the Virginia Company (Eaves 1986, p. 86 & 148, n. 61). William Harrison in his description of England first published in 1577, observed that 'Our armour …consisteth of corselets, almaine riverets, shirtes of mayle, Jacke quilted over wyth leather, fustian or canuas ouer thicke plates of yron that are sewed into the same, and of which there is no towne or village that hath not hir conuenient furniture (in Ralph Holinshead, The First Volume of the Chronicles of England, Scotland and Ireland, London, 1557, f. 86v). Today, however, only sixteen more or less complete jacks of plate are preserved worldwide. Aside from this and the following lot, eight (only five of which are complete) can be recorded in the Royal Armouries Museum, Leeds, one in the British Museum, London, one in the Royal Museums of Scotland, Edinburgh, one in Warwick Castle, Warwickshire, one in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, one in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg, and one in the Schweizerisches Landesmuseum, Zurich (Eaves 1989, pp. 135-7, n. 22-6 & 29). Only the last two and one of those in Leeds has its frontal opening offset to one side of centre as on this and the following lot. These lots and the Leeds example formed part of a collection assembled at Worden Hall, Lancashire, by Sir William ffarington (c. 1704-81) sometime after 1765. They are unlikely to have formed part of the Hall's indigenous armoury which was sequestered by Parliament in 1643 (Susan Maria ffarington, The ffarington Papers, Chetham Society, 1856, p. 93), although it was said that one of the three did service, together with a helmet and other pieces, as part of a funeral achievement eventually removed from the ffarington Chapel in Leyland Church in 1816 (De Cosson & Burgess 1881, p. 591). The collection was in due course added to by Miss Susan ffarington in the 19th century. An 18th century inventory of it is preserved in New Zealand while three 19th century ones, dating from 1846 to circa 1870 are privately preserved in England, and refer to '3 Brigandine Jackets (for Bowmen. (Elizn'. A drawing of what is almost certainly one of these jacks is preserved in a manuscript catalogue prepared by the late 18th century Manchester antiquary Thomas Barritt and now preserved in the Manchester City Library (Ancient Armour and Weapons in the Possession of Thos Barrit 1793). The catalogue shows objects both in his own collection and of others that he visited in the north of England. He describes the jack as 'A Bigantine jacket quilted within with square pieces of iron about an inch in diameter and sliding over each other like the scales of fishes, and covered over with strong linen'. One of the Worden jacks (probably that now in the Royal Armouries Museum, inv. No. III.1884) was lent by Miss ffarington to the Exhibition of Ancient Helmets and Examples of Mail held in the rooms of the British Archaeological Association in 1881 (De Cosson & Burgess 1881, cat. no. 49, p.591) The collection was sold by a local auctioneer in 1948. The purchaser of the three jacks subsequently lent them to Rufford Old Hall, Lancashire. One of them in due course passed to a private collection in the USA but was in 1982 acquired by the Royal Armouries, H.M. Tower of London, while those forming the present and following lots had from some time before 1981 been sent for conservation to the North Western Museum and Art Gallery Service at Blackburn, Lancashire.

Lot 567

A rare and probably unique set of forty three English silver and enamel thimbles by Peter Swingler (died 2015) commemorating the Presidents of the United States of America 1801-2009. Each thimble with an enamel oval portrait of the relevant president flanked to each side by an eagle, to the reverse an oval enamel plaque giving name, dates served and numerical ranking, within a cast scroll frame, over a frieze in blue enamel ïPresidents of AmericaÍ (43)A letter dated 22nd November 2009 from P. Swingler to Mary Cruwys states the following:Dear Mrs CruwysI was pleased to hear from your letter that you have received, the Presidents of America. The sets were painted approximately 20 years ago, and only 3 sets were completed. I have noted from your letter that you would like your set brought up to date. Starting with:- Grover Cleveland for his 2ND term No. 24 also No. 38 Gerald Ford for his 2ND term No. 41 George H. Bush } No. 42 Bill Clinton } Total six No. 43 George W. Bush } thimbles No. 44 Barrack Obama } At this moment the Silver Thimbles are now being made ready for me to start painting. The cost for each Thimble would be £90.00 and will be completed in the new year. Would you please let me know if you have any queries. We hope you are both keeping well.Yours SincerelyP SwinglerThere are several discrepancies and anomalies in the letter. It appears that Mrs Cruwys had only received her set shortly before the letter was written not when the sets (one of only three) were apparently made, circa 1989. The second thimble for Grover Cleveland referred to does not appear with the present lot, the fact that 41-44 were ordered probably makes this the only set of this magnitude. In a further contradiction the majority of the thimbles are hall marked for 1984 the exception being (1) (6) (27) which are for 1977 (10) (11) (12) for 1986 (38) (41) (42) (43) and (44) which are for 2003, all bear Peter SwinglerÍs makers mark with the exception of (38) (41) (42) (43) which are apparently marked G & H. Why Swingler states in 2009 ñat this moment the thimbles are being madeƒ..and will be completed in the new year when he was using blanks supplied in 2003 requires interpretation.(From the collection of the late Mary Cruwys).

(30.48 x 40.64cm) 'Catalogue of Exhibition of Recent Paintings by Harry Kernoff, R.H.A.', Mill's Hall, Dublin, 1-15 December 1937, catalogue no. 42 Cook Street in the vicinity of Christ Church Cathedral, houses a rather imposing stretch of medieval town wall. Although much restored in recent years, it marks the line of the original Hiberno-Norse wall, which was first built c.1100 (according to archaeological dating) not far from the banks of the River Liffey at high tide. Cook Street is so named as during the thirteenth century, the time of Anglo-Norman settlement, cooks (the medieval equivalent of fast-food traders), were placed outside the town wall in order to minimise the danger of fire. Most buildings at this time were made of timber and so at great risk. A number of gateways were cut through the wall to give access to the new quarter. Of these, the sole survivor is St Audeon’s Arch, seen here as it appeared in 1934.

Harry Hall (British, 1814-1882) George Mure of Herringswell Oil on canvas, 40 ½” x 60” Signed $80,000. – 120,000. Provenance: Miss Mure of Perceton Anonymous Sale; Sotheby’s, New York, 9 June 1989, lot 97 Exhibited: Rountree Tryon, 2015 Sporting Exhibition Literature: J.N.P. Watson, Collection Sporting Art, London, 1988, illustrated facing pg. 57 George Mure (1797-1868) was one of the pioneers of the East Suffolk Hunt—now called the Suffolk Hunt—which was founded by the Dukes of Grafton at Euston. He was Master of the Foxhounds for nearly 20 years, during which time the hounds were kenneled at Herringswell. Herringswell is approximately seven miles northeast of Newmarket. Mure’s huntsman was Will Rose and the whip was Sam Hibbs. Mure was also painted by John Frederick Herring, Sr. and the brothers William and Henry Barraud. The present painting is one of the finest examples of Hall’s work, with extreme attention paid to all four horses and riders and a rabble of hounds showing great personality. Harry Hall was an English equestrian painter, whose works were in high demand by 19th-century horse owners. Born in Cambridge, he was trained by another sporting artist of note, Abraham Cooper. Hall first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1838 and continued to show in artistic society exhibitions throughout his life. Living in Newmarket, he was a prolific painter, and after J. F. Herring, Sr.’s death, he was considered the foremost racehorse portraitist of his time. Hall first appeared at Tattersalls, where he worked on several of the publications: British Racehorse, The Sporting Review, and The Field to name but a few. He also worked for The Illustrated London News.
