YACHT`, impressed `MINTONS` and printed `LEADLESS GLAZE CROWN AND GLOBE ENGLAND`; `PHEBE, ROYAL YACHT SQUADRON` a bone china shaped dish, with gilt borders, an earthenware plate decorated the Prince of Wales` plumes, the reverse printed `PRINCE OF WALES B H` and with a registration lozenge; and a Mason`s Patent Ironstone plate the centre printed `BRITANNIA`. (5) Provenance: The Property of Dr & Mrs Emanuel.
A RARE JAMES II SILVER GILT TRAVELLING SET finely engraved in the manner of Simon Gribelin with amorini trumpeters or birds and foliate scrolls, comprising beaker of oval section and slightly flared at the mouth, double spice box and knife, twin pronged fork and Rat Tail spoon, each with detachable flared haft terminating in a cut card pommel, in fitted shagreen case, the lid applied with an oval plaque engraved with armorials and dated 1714, 13cms h, maker`s mark only, FS over s, a crown above, a crescent below, c1685-90, 9ozs 10dwts Provenance: The arms are those of General Charles Churchill, younger brother of John, 1st Duke of Marlborough of Blenheim Palace with, on an inescutcheon of pretence, those of Gould. Born at Ashe Manor, Devonshire on 2 February 1656, Charles Churchill embarked upon his distinguished military career after the Glorious Revolution of 1688. His swift elevation in the Service was as rapid as it was merited and at the Battle of Blenheim (13 August 1704) he ably assisted his brother, who respected his advice, in forcing the passage of the River Nebel. He retired in 1708 and died without legitimate issue on 29 December 1714. He was interred in the Church at Great Mintern where a notable monument was erected. Churchill married in 1702, Mary (d.1757), sole heiress of James Gould of Dorchester and to her he left his estate and most of his personal effects. It seems likely that the present lot was commissioned by, or presented to Churchill, maybe as a gift of his wife and could well have been used on campaign. The dated armorial, perhaps engraved by a hand unfamiliar with heraldry, was presumably added as a memento to what was clearly a personal or favourite possession and of sentimental or historical significance. In the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum is a pilgrim flask by Pierre Platel that passed on the death of Charles Churchill to the 1st Duke, who caused the General`s arms to be engraved upon it, also in 1714 (M854-1927). Such is the quality and refinement of his work, that it is certain the maker FSs was a Huguenot. Only about 15 or 16 items bearing his mark are known and of these only a pair of cups and stands are fully marked (London 1688). These and the rest of his oeuvre that comprises only small articles of domestic plate are greatly enhanced by delicate ornamental engraving of such merit that in her catalogue of the Untermyer Collection the acknowledged expert and curator Yvonne Hackenbroch described it as being "of rare sensitivity". For lists of extant work by the maker see Lomax (J), British Silver at Temple Newsam and Lotherton Hall, Leeds 1992, pp 169-170 and the Catalogue of the sale of the Meech Collection, Sotheby`s New York Part I, 22 October 1993, lot 49. In the same fine condition as when sold anonymously in these `rooms 25th March 1999, lot 105, bought by the present vendor.

Thomas Nast (1840-1902 New York, NY) Political cartoon: ``A Hot Journal``, signed lower right: Th. Nast., with printing number lower left: 180/2, unframed ink on Turnbulls paperboard, board size: 22`` H x 17.5`` W, est: $2000/3000 Literature: Harper`s Weekly Journal of Civilization, New York, NY, September 25, 1886, cover illustration. Note: Thomas Nast, arguably the most important American political cartoonist, is remembered for creating the modern version of Santa Claus and the Republican Party`s political symbol of the elephant, as well as for his advocacy of civil reform and his attacks on Tammany Hall. He drew cartoons for Harper`s Weekly from 1859 to 1860 and from 1862 to December 1886 The present work, executed just two months before Nast severed ties with Harper`s permanently, was the September 25, 1886 cover image for the magazine and is an important example by the artist because it showcases both the artist’s support for President Cleveland and their shared focus on reform. Until the 1884 presidential campaign, Nast was a staunch Republican. But his distrust of the financially-corrupt Republican nominee James G. Blaine forced Nast to join the Mugwumps, a group of Republican political activists who left the party to support the election of Democrat Grover Cleveland. Nast and the Mugwumps are credited with winning the closely contested election for Cleveland. Five years after Nast’s death, The Merwin-Clayton Sales Company of New York conducted a two day sale of the artist’s work. Their catalogue describes the present work as ``A Hot Journal. Cleveland on rear platform of a railway car, conductor on ground looking at him, both holding their noses, hot-box of car inscribed, `N.Y. Tribune`, burning fiercely`` (The Merwin-Clayton Sales Company, New York, NY, ``Catalogue of Original Drawings and Cartoons of the late Thomas Nast``, 19-20 February 1907, pg. 24, no. 180). The printed magazine cover includes the caption: A Hot Journal / Conductor Uncle Sam. ``I`m sorry that there is any delay in our journey, but we’ll arrive safely``. Provenance: sale, The Merwin-Clayton Sales Company, New York, NY, ``Catalogue of Original Drawings and Cartoons of the late Thomas Nast``, 19-20 February 1907, pg. 24, no. 180; Estate, Azusa, CA. Condition: Visual: Generally good condition. Minor toning throughout with staining and soiling concentrated mainly along the edges.
