Lot 166

This stunning R-Type was bodied in Aluminium by E.D. Abbott of Farnham in 'Continental' style. Only a handful were created, and offer fabulous styling for a fraction of the cost of the celebrated Fastback Continental. In June 1952, Bentley’s new R-Type was presented to the public and it owed its name to the fact that the VI Series had, by this time, reached the chassis letter 'R'. The new model continued to utilise the MkVI’s independent front suspension, hydraulic front brakes and six-cylinder 'F-head' power unit, by now extended to 4,566cc. The standard R-Type was a lively performer, achieving 106mph in silence and reached 50mph from standstill in ten seconds, despite a curb weight approaching two tonnes. As usual, the R-Type could be ordered in chassis form for bodying by specialist coachbuilders, and this manual transmission example was the work of E.D. Abbott of Farnham, Surrey. The stylish, streamlined, Continental-style fastback coupé coachwork, designed by Abbott's stylist, Peter Woodgate, had been intended for the superseded MkVI chassis and bore more than a passing resemblance to H J Mulliner's contemporary Bentley Continental. After two prototypes had been completed, Abbott bodied 14 'production' cars, this example being the first. Of the remaining 13, one was fitted with automatic transmission and one was built with left-hand drive. We understand that this example was sold new to The Earl of Sefton, bodied in Aluminium and presented as a two-door ‘Continental’ style coupé in Ascot Grey.OYE 700 is accompanied by a fascinating history file which contains a list of previous owners, confirming that the car’s first owner was indeed the Rt. Hon. Earl of Sefton at Croxteth Hall. In 1968 it became the property of Richard Clover from Worcester and, ten years later, it was registered to the Midland Record Company (Peter John Riley). Jeremy Pemberton of Yellowhammer PLC acquired the Bentley in 1990 before selling it in 2004 to specialists dealers Frank Dale and Stepsons who, according to invoices in the file, carried out quite a lot of work on the car. A Michael Percival is listed as owning the car in 2004 with Eric Adkins in 2005, prior to Mr and Mrs Silverstone, also in 2005. The famous car-collecting dentist, Dr James Hull, added it to his Collection in late 2009 and, naturally, it moved to a previous vendor’s significant Collection around 2012 when Dr Hull sold everything. There are a number of older invoices with the car and it appears that by 1985, whilst in Peter Riley’s custodianship, the Bentley was looking a little sad. A.B.Price, Automobile Engineers of Studley provided an 'estimate' dated 4th February 1985 for 'totally stripping coachwork, rebuilding corroded and damaged panelwork, re-cellulosing the car, replacing wood frame in body structure, completely refitting the interior woodwork and reassembling all fittings etc'. The estimate totalled £14,338. Invoices over the next 18 months totalled over £20,000 from A.B.Price and detail the work completed. Later invoices over the years from Frank Dale & Stepsons and Hillier Hill detail subsequent maintenance and repairs, with the most recent one dated 8th October 2011, recording the odometer reading of 50,572 miles. The history file also contains a number of old V5s, a dozen older MOTs, lots of correspondence, the original ‘buff’ logbook, its R-Type Bentley Handbook, an article by Bill Medcalf entitled 'R-Type Continentals' and a booklet titled ‘Twenty Years of Crewe Bentleys’. There is also a letter from Bentley confirming that, should the opportunity arise, they would be delighted to display OYE 700 at the factory as part of 'The Bentley Experience'.OYE 700 is currently owned by a private Collector who has recently spent over £1,200 with DA Cooper in Sussex on some mechanical work to ensure the car is in splendid shape for the next owner. This was the first of the Abbotts of Farnham aluminium-bodied cars, and one can only imagine the sort of attention the 'swoopy' Continental bodywork would have generated back in 1954, matched only by the sort of admiration it would garner in 2023. This car is effectively the same as a manual Mulliner R-Type Continental, but at a fraction of the price, and rarer. Both cars are alloy-bodied and drive identically. We encourage you to view this remarkable piece of automotive art in the metal and to appreciate the sheer quality on offer.Specification Make: BENTLEY Model: R-TYPE COUPE BY ABBOTT Year: 1954 Chassis Number: B393SP Registration Number: OYE 700 Transmission: Manual Engine Number: B446S Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 51171 Miles Make: RHDClick here for more details and images

HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN (2004) - Hagrid's (Robbie Coltrane) PumpkinA pumpkin from Hagrid's (Robbie Coltrane) garden in Alfonso Cuarón's fantasy-adventure sequel Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Hagrid tethered the hippogriff Buckbeak in his pumpkin patch, while the beast awaited its execution. The pumpkin has an orange-dyed rubber exterior and a hollow foam interior. It features a carved spooky grinning face on one side and a green-painted stalk at the top. A circular section has been carved out around the stalk, and this rests over the opening it's created. This pumpkin was among many later repurposed for the 2017 Dark Arts at Harry Potter Studios Halloween Tour. For this event, the prop team carved unique faces into each of the pumpkins, hollowed them out and hung them with wires from the ceiling of The Great Hall set. For subsequent Dark Arts studio tours, these pumpkins were replaced with new pumpkins and this one was saved from disposal. The pumpkin exhibits glue remnants and hook holes around the top opening. FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VIII: JASON TAKES MANHATTAN (1989) - Mario Kirner Collection: Jason Voorhees' (Kane Hodder) ShirtJason Voorhees' (Kane Hodder) shirt from Rob Hedden's slasher sequel Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan. After being accidentally resurrected from the bottom of Crystal Lake, Jason wore his shirt throughout the film as part of his slime-drenched costume, while hunting a group of high-school graduates on a cruise ship to New York. This example is one of three shirts worn by Kane Hodder during the production. It screen-matches to an episode of The Arsenio Hall Show in July 1989, when Jason appeared as a silent guest to promote the film. It matches through the intentional distress and markings on the collar and pockets. The Levi's chambray grey cotton shirt is marked as a size "XXL" and displays heavy intentional distressing with several rips and holes. The colour has faded over time, creating a washed-out appearance.Additional Provenance:This lot comes from the personal collection of Friday the 13th collector and historian Mario Kirner. This lot comes from the Friday the 13th Props Museum collection of Mario Kirner. The Museum was created as a private collection that showcased not only Jason's iconic hockey mask, but also a number of other movie props, costumes and additional materials that were used during the production of the Friday the 13th movies. His collection of well over 400 prints by Muirhead Bone, which includes many rare impressions, was presented by his trustees in 1965 to the Hunterian Art Gallery, University of Glasgow. A selection of Chinese porcelains from Leonard Gow, notably lot 354, a pair of Yellow and Green 'Dragon' bowls, Yongzheng mark and period, were sold in this saleroom on 2 December 2014.As remembered by the current owner (the great-grandson of Leonard Gow), the present lot was displayed in the hall at his grandparents' family home at Hallhill, Renfrewshire during the 1960s and 70s. Note: Note: Bronze incense burner in the form of a goose or duck, either standing one-legged or two, is a relatively common subject matter. The three-legged toad, known as jinchan in Chinese, is a beloved mythical animal believed to beckon wealth, usually depicted with the immortal Liu Hai. However, it is unusual to see the combination of a duck standing on a toad. A comparable example, dated to the Ming dynasty, is in the Guanfu Museum, note the similarity of the composition of the duck and toad. According to the museum note, 'duck', in Chinese ya, is a homophonic pun for 'press' or 'insistence', and the toad symbolises wealth. The duck standing sideway on the toad implies a guaranteed unexpected, or sudden gain of wealth.Sold examples of only the duck, Ming dynasty, standing on one leg like the present lot, can be found in auctions, one at Sotheby's Paris, 16 June 2022, lot 72, the other at Christie's New York, 29 Jun 2021, lot 99. A related example of a bronze 'Liu Hai and toad' censer, 17th century, was sold at Sotheby's London, 18 May 2018, lot 437.

An oak dining chair, 19th century, the red leather upholstery with bold brass studs and gilt family crests, on a chamfered oak frame, 51cm wide 96cm high Provenance: The Clive and Jane Wainwright Collection. From Costessey Hall, Norfolk. The chair was probably commissioned for Costessey Hall by the Hon. Valentine Stafford Jerningham (1802-1884), prior to his succession as the 9th Baron Stafford and the 8th Baronet Costessey in 1851. Costessey, four miles west of Norwich, was gifted, in 1066, to Alan Rufus, Earl of Richmond, by William 1. In 1555, Mary 1 awarded it to Sir Henry Jerningham for his support of Lady Jane Grey, and Jerningham built a new manor to the south of the river Tud. Between 1826 and 1836, J C Buckler built a large and extraordinary neo-Gothic castle for Lord Stafford Jerningham. The contents of the hall, presumably including this chair, were sold in 1913 and the hall left empty. At the start of the Second World War, it was commandeered by the War Office, finally being demolished in 1925. The belfry block - the only survival - now stands next to the 18th hole of Costessey Park Golf Club. The loss of Buckler's 'pinnacle and towered' hall, which was one of the finest examples of scholarly and romantic Regency Tudor revivals, is considered a notable loss amongst many 20th-century house demolitions. Condition ReportUpholstery used, with cracks and splits

Buddhism was the primary religion of the Qing dynasty and there were numerous Buddhist shrines and temples, as well as altars, in the private quarters of the emperors and empresses. All of these necessitated ritual paraphernalia, including altar sets, which were made in various materials including bronze, porcelain and cloisonné enamel of varying size. For a pair of imperial bronze censers with dragon decoration, see Wan Yi, Daily Life in the Forbidden City, New York, 1988, pls.473 and 474, pp.302-303, where they are shown in situ in the shrine in the interior of the rear Hall of the Imperial Ancestral Temple and in the rear part of the Hall of Ancestral Worship. Fischer, Baden-Baden, sold in Koller Zürich, 29 October 2013, lot 179.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

TAPIS IMPÉRIAL EN SOIEFin de la Dynastie QingAN IMPERIAL SILK AND METALLIC THREAD 'LOTUS AND BATS' HALL CARPETLate Qing DynastyWith a gold ground centred on a large lotus flower circled by four bats picked out in blue silk alternating with four smaller lotus flowers, below an additional two bats each flanked by lotus flowers on the upper and lower boders, all against a dense ground of stylised ruyi-shaped clouds picked out in a vibrant orange colour, within a thin diaper border and framed by a keyfret band a five character 'Taihe Dian beiyong' (Great Hall of Supreme Harmony) mark to the upper border. 217cm x 123.5cm (85 3/8in x 48 5/8in)Footnotes:清晚期 御製絲織金屬綫蝙蝠蓮紋地毯「太和殿備用」款This carpet belongs to an extensive group of so-called 'palace' or 'hall' carpets woven in silk and precious metallic thread and supposedly made for the various halls and palaces of the Forbidden City during the Qing dynasty. The Taihe dian, The Hall of Supreme Harmony, or throne hall, was the most important of the Three Front Halls in the Forbidden City complex, and was used for observing various rites and conducting a number of important ceremonies including celebrating New Year's Day, the Winter Solstice, the emperor's birthday and the imperial wedding ceremony, as well as issuing proclamations of war and peace and other major rites of state, see Wango Weng and Yang Boda, The Palace Museum: Peking, Treasures of the Forbidden City, New York, 1982, pp.41-44.While a number of silk and metallic thread carpets bearing the same hall mark as the present lot are known, the lotus and bat design is rare, compare a silk and metallic thread carpet without a hall mark, sold Christie's New York, 19 March 2021, lot 748.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Incense burners of this form were placed beside or in front of the imperial thrones in the halls of the palaces to symbolise that the emperor, protected by these animals, was a virtuous and intelligent ruler, as illustrated by a pair of censers of luduan shape flanking the throne in the Hall of Supreme Harmony (Taihe Tang) in the Forbiden City, published in Palaces of the Forbidden City, Hong Kong, 1986, pp.66-67. Luduan-form censers are seen as early as late Ming/early Qing and their popularity is demonstrated by the surviving examples. Compare with two Ming examples of this form with Wanli marks in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, published in The Complete Collection of Palace Museum. Enamels 1: Cloisonne in the Yuan (1271-1368) and Ming (1368-1644) Dynasties, Beijing, 2011, pls.102-103.
