(Women's Rights, Feminism, Suffrage, Social Reform), John Stuart Mill: 'The Subjection of Women', London, Longmans, Green, Reader & Dyer, 1869, 1st edition, iv,188pp, ex Repton School library, 19th Century inkstamp and later de-accession inkstamp to title page, no other lib. markings, original cloth gilt (worn), pencil ownership signature to FFEP of John Henry Gurney Senior (1819-1890), English banker, amateur ornithologist, and Liberal Party politician of the prominent Quaker family, the Gurneys of Norfolk. J.H. Gurney Senior was the son of Joseph John Gurney (1788-1847), banker, Quaker minister, humanitarian and philanthropist of Earlham Hall, Norwich, and the nephew of Elizabeth Fry (née Gurney; 1780-1845), the famous prison reformer, social reformer & philanthropist. Fry was a major driving force behind new legislation to improve the treatment of prisoners, especially female inmates, and as such has been called the "Angel of Prisons". She was instrumental in the 1823 Gaols Act which mandated sex-segregation of prisons and female warders for female inmates to protect them from sexual exploitation. Fry kept extensive diaries in which the need to protect female prisoners from rape and sexual exploitation is explicit. Joseph John Gurney joined his sister Elizabeth Fry in her attempt to end capital punishment and institute improvements in prisons, together they visited prisons all over Great Britain to gather evidence of the horrible conditions in them to present to Parliament. They published their findings in a book entitled Prisons in Scotland and the North of England. Gurney campaigned against slavery during trips to North America and the West Indies from 1837-1840, he also continued to promote the abolition of capital punishment and advocated total abstinence from alcohol. A first edition and interesting association copy of one of the great statements of the equality of the sexes, recognized as an early contribution in the feminist canon: "among campaigners for women's suffrage. it rapidly became a sacred text and gave him a position of heroic, almost apostolic, authority within the nascent women's movement" (ODNB). Mill had long been a women's rights advocate, having been influenced by the thinking of his father, the Utilitarian philosopher James Mill, and by his long friendship with, and then marriage to, the philosopher Harriet Taylor Hardy (1807-1858), a passionate advocate for equality.

William Woollett after Benjamin West, engraving, 'The Battle at La Hogue', published by West, Woollett and Hall 1781, visible sheet 48 x 60.5cm The action at La Hogue occurred during the pursuit by the English of the French fleet after the Battle of Barfleur on 19 May Old Style (29 May (New Style)), 1692, during the Nine Years' War. The pursuing English fleet, under the command of Admiral of the Fleet Edward Russell, 1st Earl of Orford, destroyed a number of French ships that had been beached near the port of Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue.During the Nine Years War, the English and French fleets had engaged off the coast of Normandy. Tourville's fleet of badly damaged ships was swept by wind and tide down the coast of the Cotentin peninsula, pursued by an English fleet under Admiral of the Fleet Edward Russell, 1st Earl of Orford. The French beached three of their most badly damaged ships at Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, where they were attacked and destroyed by an English squadron under Vice Admiral of the Red Sir Ralph Delaval. The remaining ten French ships, commanded by Tourville and four of his flag officers, were swept down the coast, to be beached on the evening of 21 May outside the small port of Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue.

One of the first students to graduate, De Syllas' jewellery caught the attention of Graham Hughes, who purchased her entire body of student work for The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths Collection. Hughes served as Art Director of The Goldsmiths' Company between 1951-1981 and actively promoted the work of British avant-garde jewellers. The 'International Exhibition of Modern Jewellery, 1890-1960' held at Goldsmiths' Hall under his leadership in 1961, marked a watershed moment for British jewellery design and the industry at large. Each of the four De Syllas jewels presented in this sale (lots 83 - 86) were exhibited at a major retrospective exhibition of De Syllas' work, held by The Goldsmiths' Company at Goldsmiths' Hall in 2016. The exhibition featured 73 unique pieces, covering her student work from the 1960s to her latest commissions. Prior to this, De Syllas won the first ever Jerwood Prize for Jewellery in 1995 (jointly with Peter Chang). Since graduating in 1966, she has taught and exhibited internationally and her work can be found in the permanent collections of the V&A Museum, the Crafts Council in London and the Alice and Louis Koch Collection at the Swiss National Museum in Zurich.De Syllas designs a jewel around the form of the gemstone she carves, creating sculptural pieces that are tailored specifically to each client – their complexion, hair colour, personality and personal preferences are all considered. Sculpting gemstones requires a great depth of understanding, experience, patience and skill and the art is fraught with many challenges. While the metal settings are secondary to the gemstone itself, De Syllas carefully considers the metal used in order to best enhance and seamlessly support each carving. She employs unconventional methods traditionally used in other fields, such as gunsmithing and dentistry and embraces new technologies, such as digital design drawing and laser welding. Her work is truly exceptional for its technical brilliance and fearless ingenuity. Nearly all of her pieces are private commissions, and this is likely to be the first time her jewellery has ever been presented to a global audience at auction. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: YY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Third War Loan issued by the General Transport Bank / Allgemeine Verkehrsbank - Yellow and black border with stylised lettering which translates to - Once again the call is issued to the entire Austrian population: Provide the means that the Fatherland needs to continue waging the war! Enormous feats of arms by our army and our fleet, great economic achievements characterize the past Kuegs year and guarantee a favorable outcome of the world war, which nobody in the monarchy wanted, but the politics of our opponents today have been working purposefully towards unleashing it for years. But there are still difficult things ahead of us, we still have to do everything we can because everything is at stake. Daily and hourly our brothers and sons risk their lives out in the field in the fight for the fatherland. Now those who stayed at home should get new funds so that our heroes outside can be equipped with the things they need to live and fight. It is a matter of honor for everyone to serve and help the fatherland with all their might during this great time, which will be decisive for the future of the monarchy. 1969 Triumph 649cc T120R BonnevilleRegistration no. not registeredFrame no. T120R GC 21491Engine no. GC 21491 T120RAs the 1960s dawned, Triumph's larger twin-cylinder models remained recognisably similar to the first Speed Twin of 1938. Unitary construction of engine and gearbox was already a feature of the 350 and 500 twins though, and that innovation duly appeared on the 650s in 1963. The café racer's favourite since its launch, thanks to lusty acceleration and a top speed approaching 120mph, the Bonneville continued in this new form as Triumph's top-of-the-range sports roadster, arriving at what aficionados consider its ultimate specification with the launch of the 1968 model. By this time the frame had been sorted and 12-volt electrics standardised, but welcome improvements included shuttle-valve fork internals, independently adjustable ignition points, Amal Concentric carburettors, and a long overdue twin-leading-shoe front brake. For the next couple of seasons the Bonnie continued essentially unchanged, before the disastrous launch of the 'oil-in-frame' models in November 1970 precipitated the collapse of the entire BSA-Triumph Group. Belonging to the last Bonneville generation built before BSA-Triumph switched to the Umberslade Hall-designed oil-in-frame range, this example was imported from the USA and still carries its Virginia licence plates. No history is known but the Bonnie appears in nice original condition. The vendor has checked the machine mechanically but left it untouched cosmetically. Recommissioning is advised before further use. Accompanying paperwork consists of a VMCC dating letter and HMR&C correspondence.Offered with keyFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
c.1957 Velocette 349cc Venom/KSS SpecialRegistration no. YSJ 842Frame no. RS10265 (see text)Engine no. KSS 10579Slotting Velocette's wonderful pre-war K-Series overhead-camshaft engine into later cycle parts has long been an accepted practice among aficionados of the Hall Green factory's products, and this example combines an ex-racing Venom rolling chassis dating from circa 1957 with the motor taken from a circa 1947 KSS MkII. Introduced for the 1936 season, the MkII KSS represented a major re-design of Velocette's top-of-the-range overhead-camshaft roadster. The MkII featured many improvements including a new aluminium-alloy cylinder head with enclosed valve gear (which replaced the old cast-iron 'head with exposed springs).Restored in 2022, this very smartly turned-out hybrid features a modified and lightened frame; uprated engine; Venom four-speed gearbox; TT magneto; Kevin Thurston belt primary drive; aluminium oil tank; Hagon shock absorbers; alloy fork yokes; more modern forks; alloy wheel rims; and various other modifications. The machine last ran in November 2022 and is described by the private vendor as in very good condition. 'YSJ 842' comes with a V5C Registration Certificate erroneously recording the frame number as 'R510265'. 1955 Velocette 500cc MSSRegistration no. FGH 757Frame no. RS7052Engine no. MSS 10267 (see text)Dropped from Veloce Limited's range in 1948 while the company concentrated on the LE, the MSS reappeared in 1954 with a new swinging-arm frame and Hall Green's own telescopic front fork. The engine too was updated, gaining 'square' bore and stroke dimensions of 86x86mm together with an alloy cylinder barrel and 'head. For many years this MSS formed part of the private collection belonging to an old friend of the vendor. When the friend was forced to stop riding following an accident, he sold the machine to our vendor in 2004. The owner's 'everyday bike', the Velo has been ridden on various Irish rallies by him and the previous owner. However, it has not been used for at least 4-5 years and will require recommissioning and a new battery before returning to the road. Prior to being laid up, the MSS was regularly maintained by the enthusiast owner and is only being sold due to his advancing years. Close inspection of this wonderful example is highly recommended. The machine comes with a comprehensive history file; an original service manual; and a copy of The Book of the Velocette. It should be noted that the engine number has been eroded and appears to read 'MSS 10267' rather than '10227' as recorded on the V5C. Furthermore, the machine is listed as first registered in 1980 together with a 1936 date of manufacture - presumably historical errors. Property of a deceased estate1962 Velocette 499cc MSSRegistration no. AOO 515Frame no. RS14750Engine no. MSS 12824The third of Velocette's overhead-valve, high-camshaft, single-cylinder designs, the 500cc MSS was announced in 1935. First of these new models had been the 250cc MOV of 1933, which was joined for 1934 by a long-stroke 350cc version: the MAC. For the MSS, Veloce combined the MAC's 96mm stroke with a larger bore to create its new '500',which featured a new frame derived from that of the racing KTT. The MSS disappeared from Veloce Limited's range in 1948 while the company concentrated on the LE, reappearing in 1954 with a new swinging-arm frame and Hall Green's own telescopic front fork. The engine too was updated, gaining 'square' bore and stroke dimensions of 86x86mm together with an alloy cylinder barrel and 'head. This MSS belonged to the lady vendor's late father for over 50 years. Carrying a tax disc that expired in 2015, the Velo was last ridden circa five years ago, since when it has been dry stored under dust sheets. (The father passed away in June 2022.) Following a period of inactivity, the machine will require re-commissioning to a greater or lesser extent, or possibly more extensive restoration before returning to the road and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves with regard to the motorcycle's completeness, originality, and mechanical condition prior to bidding. Accompanying paperwork includes the original RF.60 logbook; current V5C document; expired MoTs (most recent 2017); DVLA correspondence; and various receipts/invoices.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
