A tanzanite and diamond ring by Gilian Packard, 1972, the emerald-cut tanzanite in four-claw setting, within a bold architectural setting of vertical polished ribs, with diamond highlights, London hallmark, maker’s mark ‘GEP’, stamped ‘750’, tanzanite approximately 3.0 carats, ring size M. £700-£900 --- Provenance: The tanzanite ring was a private commission made by Gilian Packard in 1972, with the tanzanite being provided by the customer. The ring thence by family descent. Gilian Packard (1938-1997) was born in Newcastle-on-Tyne. Named Gilian (with one ‘l’ - because, as she said “My father couldn’t spell”), she established herself as one of the leading modern jewellers of the 1960s. She studied at the Kingston School of Art, the Central School and the Royal College of Art. After her third year at the RCA, her Diploma exhibition coincided with the public opening of their new building in June 1962. Gilian acquired from it one or two commissions for special pieces. From these gentle beginnings, her work quickly began to gather pace. Most of her work was for private customers: “Designing for particular people is satisfying because one can design pieces that suit them as individuals.” The remaining part of her production went to retail outlets such as Richard Ogden in Burlington Arcade, or Cameo Corner. Progressive provincial jewellers such as Michael Jones in Northampton also retailed certain pieces. She went on to win many important jewellery awards and became the first female Freeman of the Goldsmiths’ Company. She promoted modern jewellery design through her work as a teacher, becoming Professor of Jewellery and Silversmithing at the Glasgow School of Art, and then at the Sir John Cass Department of Silversmithing, Jewellery and Allied Arts at London’s Guildhall University. Gilian died in Aldeburgh in 1997. Examples of her work can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and in many public and private collections. With thanks to the Goldsmiths’ Hall for additional information. ---- ---- Condition Report Tanzanite of even mid blue with purple undertones, light wear to facet edges. Ring mount in good condition, maker’s mark slightly rubbed. Gross weight 12.1gm.
Trade & Excise.- House of Commons. Report (The) of the Committee...To whom the Petition of the Royal Lustring-Company... was Referred... relating to the Smuggling Trade, first edition, initial imprimatur leaf (lightly stained and frayed at edges), with final leaf 'The Names of such other Persons as the House of Commons have Order'd to be Prosecuted in Westminster-Hall for the said Smuggling Trade, and Corresponding with the Enemy, during the War', stab-holes, modern cloth, uncut, [Goldsmiths' 3496; Kress 2095; Wing E2705], E.Whitlock, 1698 § [Davenant (Charles)] An Essay upon the Probable Methods of making a People Gainers in the Ballance of Trade, second edition, 6 folding tables, author's name supplied in ink on title, engraved Johnstone bookplate, contemporary sprinkled calf, rebacked, worming to joints, [Goldsmiths' 3651; Kress 2216; Wing D310], James Knapton, 1700 § Symons (Jellinger) The Excise Laws abridged, second edition, contemporary ink signature of J.Ingilby to head of title and upper cover, ink markings to text and notes to rear pastedown, contemporary calf, rebacked, J.Nourse, 1775 § Plan of National Improvement..., only edition, printed on thick paper, contemporary ink inscription of B.Balfour to head of title, original boards, uncut, name to upper cover, rebacked, new endpapers, [Goldsmiths' 18613; Kress B.4718], 1803, the last three rubbed; and 6 others on trade, v.s. (10)⁂ The first concerns the production of "lustrings" (a light, glossy, black silk) begun by the Royal Lustring Company in 1688, but the trade had largely collapsed by 1698, the number of operating looms having shrunk from over 700 to fewer than 50. Under its Royal Charter the Company enjoyed a monopoly in England and French imports were prohibited, which presumably led to a significant increase in smuggling. The Committee's investigation was both thorough and lengthy, the consequent report throwing considerable light on the organisation of the contraband trade. ESTC describes the final leaf as being blank but the leaf present here is obviously part of the work and always has been, to judge by the stab-holes.

SIR HENRY RAEBURN AND STUDIO (SCOTTISH 1756 - 1823), PORTRAIT OF THE FIDDLER NEIL GOW oil on canvas framed image size 123cm x 98cm, overall size 141cm x 115cm Provenance: Private Collection Canada till November 2021; Christies, 7th October 1949 Lot 171 as “Raeburn, Portrait of Neil Gow” (Christies Stencil Verso). Note 1: According to Raeburn expert David Mackie in his thesis on Henry Raeburn, the artist executed several versions of the painting of Neil Gow: 'The first listing of the versions Raeburn executed of this portrait was given by “Andrew, William Raeburn “Life of Sir Henry Raeburn, R.A” in 1886 (p. 124): One for the County Hall, Perth, which is now in Perth Art Gallery and Museum; one with the Duke of Atholl, which is still with that family; one with Lord Gray, (this may be the version which was recorded by the Photographic Survey as with the Honourable Mr Gray at Kinfauns, alternatively, it may be the version sold by the Earl of Moray at the Moray Sale, Sotheby's, 9 June 1932; to Hepburn); and one for William Maule, afterwards Lord Panmure, the present whereabouts of which is unknown. In addition to these versions Caw (Armstrong, p. 103) stated that one was in the collection of a Mrs Mackenzie; according to Caw, it was presented by the artist to the sitter; it was with the Erich Gallery, New York, in 1908; George G. Benjamin; his sale, American Art Association, 18 March 1913 (64); to Stuart Duncan; its present whereabouts is not known; a note in the Frick Art Reference Library (221 -10f) states that it had been cut down and that it was "repainted". Caw also listed a version in the collection of the Earl' Note 2: Neil Gow was the most famous Scottish fiddler of the eighteenth century. Gow received patronage from the Duke of Atholl, and it is believed that this was the result of Gow's performance in a musical competition, judged by John McCraw, a blind musician, who awarded Gow first prize, and stated that he "would ken his bow hand amoung a hunder(d) players". This patronage meant Gow secured performances for balls and dance parties put on by the local nobility, which would go on to make him a renowned musician and composer. Raeburn’s portrait of the same dimensions, of Neil Gow is currently on display at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, which is believed to be the autograph version of this work.

Provenance: > Private collection, Paris Intended for fairgrounds and supposed to represent the mummified body of a mermaid, the first specimen of Mermaid from the Fijdi Islands comes from the imagination of the American entertainer Phineas Taylor Barnum (1810-1891). His invention was reported for the very first time in the New York Sunday Herald on July 17, 1842 before being exhibited at the Concert Hall on Broadway and then at the American Museum in New York for several weeks. Until the end of the 19th century, the Sirens of the Fijdi Islands made headlines and inspired future science fiction writers.
