ENGLISH SCHOOL, LATE 19TH CENTURY (2)Portrait miniature of a young girl, thought to be Hilda Mary Dowson (née Greg) (1883-1956) with inscribed label (attached to the back of frame) on ivory (ref. WY1APGJS) 7.5cm in a gilt-metal frame and with a case together with a portrait miniature of a woman, thought to be Margaret Lilian Greg (1881-1945), on ivory (ref. RCC2592B), 9.3cm, in a gilt-metal frame and with a case (2) Provenance Private collection, UKFootnoteHilda Mary Dowson (née Greg) was born on 23 February 1883 in Wilmslow, Cheshire, to parents Walter and Susan Elizabeth (née Gaskell). She was baptised on 3 April 1883 at Styal Presbyterian Chapel in the parish of Wilmslow.  Her father was a solicitor and in 1891 the family was living at Lee Hall, Mottram St Andrews, Cheshire, together with five servants. Lee Hall was a large house with twenty-five rooms. She had three siblings: Margaret Lilian, born in 1881, Elizabeth Gaskell born 11 December 1883 and Robert Lionel born 1893.There is no trace of Hilda in the 1901 census.  She married Gerard Septimus Dowson, a cousin, when she was twenty-two on 29 June 1905 at the parish church of Prestbury, Cheshire.  Gerard was an estate agent born in Nottingham. Hilda and Gerard moved to The Manor House in Radcliffe on Trent in 1905, which they rented until 1921. The 1911 census records Hilda and Gerard living at Lee Hall with her widowed mother and her three unmarried children. Hilda’s sister Elizabeth is described as an art student; her brother Robert is also a student.  The household now had nine servants including two nurses. It is not known how long Hilda and Gerard stayed at Lee Hall but newspaper reports reveal they were active in Nottingham in 1910 and 1913. In 1922 the Dowsons moved temporarily from The Manor House to The Chestnuts next door, before purchasing The Grange located on Main Road, Radcliffe on Trent, in 1924.Women’s Suffrage MovementThe women’s suffrage campaign began in the 1860s and ended in 1928 when women gained full enfranchisement. The campaign started in Nottingham in 1871 when a Nottingham committee of the London National Society for Women’s Suffrage was founded. Its president was Richard Armstrong and secretary was Elizabeth Sunter. Anderson Brownsword chaired the first meeting, held in Nottingham. In 1872 the branch became associated with the new Central Committee of the National Society for Women’s Suffrage, the first national group to campaign for votes for women. In the 1880s and 1890s demand for votes for women was mainly sought via constitutional means. Alice Dowson (Hilda’s mother-in-law) had been one of the speakers at the ‘grand demonstration of women’ held in Nottingham in November 1881.  She became secretary of the branch in February 1894. Helena Brownsword had married William Enfield Dowson, oldest son of Alice and brother of Gerard, in July 1884. She took over Alice’s role as secretary in 1896 when her mother-in-law’s health deteriorated. Helena eventually took the role of President with Hilda taking her place as secretary.Hilda became involved with the Women’s Suffrage movement in Nottingham after she married Gerard Dowson in 1905. His mother Alice, sister Alice Maud, known as Maud, and sister-in-law Helena, known as Nellie, had been involved in the movement from very early on. At the same time Hilda’s mother, Susan Greg, and her sisters were active in the suffrage movement in Macclesfield. The Dowson and Greg families were closely connected.  Alice Dowson, Gerard’s mother, was also Hilda’s aunt and sister of her father Walter. The early 1900s saw the Nottingham Society become an active constituent of the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Society (NUWSS). In April 1908 two large suffrage meetings took place in Nottingham, Hilda being one of the organisers. Christabel Pankhurst spoke at one of the meetings. That same year Hilda travelled to London along with members of the Dowson family and supporters to a national Votes for Women demonstration held on June 13th. The event attracted crowds of 10,000 people, mainly women; the demonstrators marched through central London to the Albert Hall. It was deemed a success but unfortunately the Government of the day chose to ignore it. On December 4th 1908 the Derby branch of the NUWSS held its inaugural meeting. Hilda was one of the speakers and said that the vote “would provide a symbol of liberty and citizenship, a safeguard of one’s rights and privileges, and a powerful instrument to be used as occasion demanded.”On 5 July 1909 the NUWSS organised a meeting in Nottingham Market Square with Mrs Henry Fawcett, Miss Eleanor Rathbone and Mr Edward Carpenter as speakers. The police had not attended the meeting although they had been requested and the speakers were unable to make themselves heard; the crowd was unruly and anti-suffrage feelings were made plain. In January 1910 there was a General Election and Hilda and her sisters-in-law went to the polling station at Lovers Lane schoolroom in Newark, hoping to get voters to sign petitions for their cause. They had to stand outside and suffered abuse from the male voters. The Nottingham Evening Post reported on February 23rd that 8000 signatures in total had  been collected by women outside Nottinghamshire’s polling stations, which were then presented to constituency members Lord Henry Bentinck and Mr. J.E. Ellis at the society’s office in Bridlesmith Gate. The Dowsons had managed to collect 2,232 signatures from the Rushcliffe district and Hilda’s husband, Gerard Dowson, was among those in the party receiving the petition. Both Lord Bentinck and Mr Ellis were in favour of women’s suffrage; Mr Ellis promised to present the petitions to parliament. The Nottingham Evening Post also reported that the NUWSS held its annual meeting on May 31st 1910 at the Mikado café in Nottingham. Hilda and Helena Dowson were appointed joint secretaries. It was noted that there were now 200 branches of the NUWSS across the country and new branches had opened locally in Southwell, Newark and Hucknall. In July 1910 Hilda and other family members attended a demonstration in London to support the second reading of the suffrage bill (First Conciliation Bill).A fete and sale of work was held in the gardens of the homes of Mr and Mrs William Dowson and Mrs Watson in The Park, Nottingham on 23 June 1910.  It included a performance of ‘Lady Geraldine’s Speech’, a suffrage play arranged by Hilda. A suffrage shop was opened in Nottingham on Bridlesmith Gate selling campaign literature where Hilda was often to be found along with the rest of the family. By this time, the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU), which advocated militant action to gain votes for women, had attracted considerable support in Nottingham; the NUWSS distanced itself from the WSPU. Nevertheless, Hilda, now secretary of the Nottingham NUWSS, continued to be active in the suffrage movement. In 1911 she took part in a tour of Northamptonshire villages where she spoke at meetings on the suffrage question. In 1912 she organised two successful meetings in Bottesford and Bingham in which the suffragist newspaper ‘The Common Cause’ was sold.   Her mother, Susan Greg, participated in a 1911 NUWSS demonstration in London of over 40,000 women. Her sister Margaret Greg was one of 50,000 women who joined a suffragist pilgrimage in 1913. They walked to London from all corners of the country where they were addressed at Hyde Park by Millicent Fawcett, leader of the NUWSS.. The aim of the pilgrimage was to show the country widespread support for ‘votes for women’ and that thousands were prepared to campaign legally and peacefully. Margaret wrote to Hilda while travelling and described the journey. In July 1913 the Nottingham...

Registration No: GU 7091 Frame No: MD 9883 Engine No: M 3976 CC: 248 MOT: ExemptRestored by a group of Velocette enthusiastsRuns and rides very wellMany new parts fittedCurrent V5C on fileVelocette motorcycles were produced by Veloce Ltd in Hall Green, Birmingham between 1904 and 1971. One of several motorcycle manufacturers in Birmingham, Velocette was a family-owned firm selling almost as many hand-built motorcycles during its lifetime as the mass-produced machines from the likes of Triumph and Norton. Veloce, while small, was a great technical innovator and many of its patented designs were commonplace on motorcycles today, including the positive-stop foot shift and swinging arm rear suspension with hydraulic dampers. Renowned for the quality of its products, the company was "always in the picture" in international motorcycle racing from the mid-1920s through to the 1950s, culminating in two 350cc world championship titles.Whilst many Velocette designs were OHC, especially their race bikes, in 1933, the decision was made to develop a cheaper to produce OHV engine and the first model was the 250cc MOV with a fully enclosed valve train. This little Velocette MOV was restored by a group of Velocette enthusiasts during the recent pandemic, once the lockdown was lifted they all got together to complete the restoration. There have been many new parts fitted during the restoration with a full engine rebuild, and magneto rewound. The current vendor has enjoyed the MOV and has advised it runs as it should. It is being offered complete with a current V5C. For more information, please contact: Mike Davis mike.davis@handh.co.uk 07718 584217

She was nicknamed the "Fairy Godmother of Nursing" for her patronage of the Royal College of Nursing and her work to promote district nursing throughout England and Scotland. She served as the President of the Women's Liberal Federation from 1921 until 1923 and was also the Honorary Treasurer of the Liberal Women's Suffrage Union. She was painted by both Sargent and Orpen. She and her husband, Viscount Cowdray, an engineer and oil magnate, donated Cowdray Hall to the city of Aberdeen.

EASY RIDER (1969) - "Captain America" Wyatt's (Peter Fonda) Panhead Chopper Motorcycle - "Captain America" Wyatt's (Peter Fonda) Panhead chopper motorcycle from Dennis Hopper's Easy Rider. In the climactic finale scene, shotgun-wielding yokels attacked Wyatt and Billy (Hopper), crashing Wyatt's signature American flag-patterned motorcycle and ending their freewheelin' ride to New Orleans. This is the crashed motorcycle used for the scene, after the filming of which it was restored to its current state.Considered the iconic counterculture film of the 1960s, Easy Rider was nominated for two Academy Awards®, won a Cannes Film Festival award for Best First Work, and was inducted into the Library of Congress' National Film Registry for its impact on global culture. The motorcycle's destruction was considered a groundbreaking, transgressive representation of widening political fissures between the popular hippie movement of the time and repressive mainstream American culture, and remains one of the most acclaimed sequences ever put to celluloid.Wyatt's motorcycle was originally designed by Cliff Vaughs and Ben Hardy of Watts, CA with design input from Fonda. Two bikes were customized with the "Captain America" (Wyatt's nickname in the film) stars and stripes for the production to prevent filming delays. Following production, one of these motorcycles (along with Hopper's motorcycles) was stolen from stuntman Tex Hall's home. Hall gifted the other Captain America chopper - this bike, with VIN "53FL5070" - to Grizzly Adams star Dan Haggerty, who helped maintain the bikes during production, following its destruction in the crash sequence.Under Haggerty, the motorcycle underwent sympathetic frame-up restoration and was later signed by Fonda to demonstrate its authenticity. David Ohrt also performed additional restoration work after Haggerty sold the motorcycle to a private collector circa 2002. It was then displayed at the National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa, Iowa from 2002 to 2013. Prior to the sale of this original "Captain America" chopper, Haggerty constructed a replica Captain America bike for a vehicle enthusiast. That bike was exhibited as a replica at a public exhibition in the late 1990s; it was not a film-used bike, though Haggerty did install some original film components onto the replica during its build. In order to resolve any confusion as to whether Haggerty's 1994 replica bike was an original, the offered "Captain America" motorcycle has undergone extensive archival review to confirm its stated authenticity. In addition to including a raft of documentation, vintage motorcycle expert Glenn Bator states that the modifications made to this motorcycle are consistent with modifications seen on the motorcycles in the final cut, in particular the repair welds on the frame's down tube between the engine and transmission that reflect damage from impact. Bator also notes that the 1994 example's construction details are not consistent with the motorcycle frames seen onscreen. Therefore, this motorcycle is understood to be the sole remaining Captain America from Easy Rider. It features a Harley-Davidson Panhead overhead-valve engine, a chrome hard-tail frame, VIN "53FL5070," and a sissy bar with the iconic "Captain America" Stars and Stripes emblem painted on the body. The gas tank is autographed and dated "2003" by Fonda in black ink.No warranty is made or implied as to this vehicle's roadworthiness. The lot also comes only with a Bill of Sale, no title. Though it has undergone previous restoration, the motorcycle still exhibits a buildup of grime, discoloration, and scuffed paint. Dimensions: 98" x 40" x 60" (249 cm x 101.5 cm x 152.5 cm)Contains electronic and mechanical components; see notices in the Buyer's Guide.Special shipping required; see notice in the Buyer's Guide.Additional Provenance: 2002 Letter of Authenticity from Dan Haggerty; 2003 Letter of Authenticity from Peter Fonda (Fonda later distanced himself from this authentication on account of the 1994 replica bike controversy); 2014 Letter of Authenticity from Haggerty stating that this exact motorcycle was given to him by stuntman Tex Hall, who in turn received it directly from Fonda, and that it is the only surviving motorcycle from the production; Letter of Authenticity from motorcycle expert Glenn Bator; additional 2013 Letter of Authenticity from the director of the National Motorcycle Museum stating that this motorcycle has been on display at the museum since August 2002; photographs of the vehicle on display at the NMM; and photographs of Fonda signing this vehicle.Estimate: $200,000 - 400,000Bidding for this lot will end on Tuesday, March 12th. The auction will begin at 9:00AM PDT and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. A campaigning pacifist at the time, Einstein delivered his speech in English and, to a packed house who cheered throughout, spoke of his fear of the looming crisis in Europe. The scientist asked 'How can we save mankind and it's spiritual acquistions of which we are the heirs and how can one save Europe from a new disaster?' and also declared 'If we want to resist the powers which threaten to supress intellectual and individual freedom we must keep clearly before us what is at stake, and what we owe to that freedom which our ancestors have won for us after hard struggles. Without such freedom there would have been no Shakespeare, no Goethe, no Newton, no Faraday, no Pasteur, and no Lister'. Four days after his appearance in London, Einstein set sail from Southampton to New York to take up a new job at Princeton University. Originally planning to be away for only six months, he in fact he never again returned to Europe. On 3 October 1933, Einstein delivered a speech on the importance of academic freedom before a packed audience at the Royal Albert Hall in London, with The Times reporting he was wildly cheered throughout.[134] Four days later he returned to the US and took up a position at the Institute for Advanced Study,[141][144] noted for having become a refuge for scientists fleeing Nazi Germany
