The Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire received their incorporation in 1624 with the same arms as the London Company but with an augmentation of the fess. The latter company had much of the cutlery trade by the middle of the 18th century though there remained cutlers in London throughout the 19th century. In 1879 there were thirty cutlers recorded working in the city of London and the company held an Exhibition in its Hall, awarding medals for various classes of work. It is likely that the present dagger was submitted for such an exhibition. Part proceeds to benefit the Acquisition Fund of the Arms and Armor department, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

A BLUE AND WHITE POURING BOWL, YI, YUAN DYNASTY 元代青花纏枝蓮紋匜China, 1279-1368. Well potted with rounded sides resting on a slightly concave base, one side set with an outward flaring spout above a small loop handle, the interior painted with a central medallion enclosing a lotus blossom surrounded by leaves, encircled by a diapered band below the rim, the exterior with a broad band of flowerheads borne on sinuous leafy vines, the spout with a cloud, the base left partly unglazed to reveal the ware burnt to orange in the firing. Provenance: From the collection of Felix Tikotin, and thence by descent within the family. Felix Tikotin (1893-1986) was an architect, art collector, and founder of the first Museum of Japanese Art in the Middle East. Born in Glogau, Germany, to a Jewish family, his ancestors had returned with Napoleon from Russia from a town named Tykocin. He grew up in Dresden and after World War I, he traveled to Japan and immediately fell in love with the culture. In April 1927, he opened his own first gallery in Berlin. The entire family survived the holocaust, and in the 1950s Tikotin slowly resumed his activities as a dealer in Japanese art. He became, once again, very successful and prominent, holding exhibitions all over Europe and the United States. When he first visited Israel in 1956, he decided that the major part of his collection belonged in that country. In 1960, the Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art was opened in Haifa. Condition: Very good condition with some old wear, traces of use and shallow surface scratches, and firing irregularities including kiln grit and some glaze pooling and recess at the rim, the latter smoothened in the manufacturing process.Weight: 223.4 g Dimensions: Length 15.5 cmBowls of this form are known as yi and appear to have been used as pouring vessels together with yuhuchun vases. Chiumei Ho in 'Social Life Under the Mongols as Seen in Ceramics', Transactions of the Oriental Ceramic Society, vol. 59, 1994-95, p. 44, notes that in archaeological contexts they are often found together with such vases and wine cups. This pairing is also depicted in a wall painting from the tomb of Zhang Andabuhua and his wife, which has been dated to 1269 AD and is illustrated in the catalog of the exhibition The World of Khubilai Khan. Chinese Art in the Yuan Dynasty, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2010, p. 83, fig. 115.These bowls were also used by Mongols in Iran, as exemplified by the bowl painted in the Enthronement Scene, part of the album Jami al-tavarikh (Compendium of Chronicles), which was commissioned between the reigns of Ghazan (r. 1295-1304) and his brother, OEljeitü (r. 1304-1316), included in the exhibition The Legacy of Genghis Khan, Courtly Art and Culture in Western Asia, (1256-1353), The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2002, cat. no. 19, fig. 84. The shape was probably copied from metal prototypes and a very similar silver pouring bowl was found together with a silver yuhuchun ping in a hoard at Hefei, Anhui province, which contained items inscribed with a name written in Phagspa characters as well as a date equivalent to 1333, both now in the Anhui Museum Provincial Museum, published in the exhibition catalog 'The World of Kublilai Khan, Chinese Art in the Yuan Dynasty', The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2010, p. 83, fig. 115.Literature comparison: Several pouring bowls of this form and decorated with various floral designs are illustrated in Zhongguo taoci quanji, vol. 11, Shanghai, 2000, pls. 213-217. One depicting a hare, in the British Museum, is published in Jessica Harrison-Hall, Ming Ceramics in the British Museum, London, 2000, pl. 1:22.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Sotheby's London, 6 November 2019, lot 137 Price: GBP 50,000 or approx. Hendrick Goltzius (Dutch, 1558-1617)The Farnese Hercules (Bartsch 143; Hollstein 145; Strauss 312; New Hollstein 378) Engraving, 1592, on laid paper, watermark Fleur-de-Lys in Crowned Shield with pendant Letters WR (see Briquet 7212), a fine impression, trimmed to the plate on three sides, with a lower thread margin, framedSheet 415 x 299mm (16 3/8 x 11 3/4in)Footnotes:In 1590 Goltzius travelled to Rome to study the antique sculptures, including the ancient statue of Hercules, which had been discovered in the Caracalla Baths in 1546 and entered the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese. Goltzius made sketches of this statue and also of the Federico Zuccaro's Hercules Hall frescoes at the Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola, using both as a basis for this engraving.Goltzius was a student of anatomy and owned a collection of écorchés – small sculptures of figures without skin to show the musculature. He attended a dissection in the anatomical theatre at Leiden University, which had established an anatomy department in 1589, and therefore understood how the muscles worked and their correct positioning within the body.Like the original statue, this is a monumental Hercules and a great technical achievement. Engraving is a laborious and time-consuming technique and Goltzius demonstrates his great skill in depicting each tensed muscle and sinew with a series of swelling and tapering lines to emphasize Hercules' strength and readiness for action. The feeling of power and strength is reinforced by the large scale of the engraving. The unusual viewpoint and monumentality of the figure captured the viewer's imagination and greatly increased the statue's renown. The identity of the two onlookers below has never been ascertained. The eighteenth-century Dutch artist Cornelis Ploos van Amstel put forth the theory that they are a self-portrait and a portrait of the artist's stepson Jacob Matham, who was taught engraving by Goltzius and later took over his workshop. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
A BRUSSELS BIBLICAL TAPESTRY 'THE DISCOVERY OF MOSES' EARLY 18TH CENTURY, FRANS VAN DER BORGHT WORKSHOP BRUSSELS Probably after designs by Jan Van Orley and Augustin Coppens, woven in silk and wool with Moses in a basket being saved by the Queen of Egypt, with attendant figures, verdure setting, townscape beyond, Brussels town mark and signed to lower margin F V D Borght approximately 315cm high, 376cm wide Provenance: Formerly the Messel family collection at Nymans Removed to the Drawing Room at Holmstead Manor in 1947 after the disastrous fire and thence by descent to Oliver Messel Supplied by Oliver Messel to Frederick and Phyllis Baden Watkins for Flaxley Abbey, GloucestershireWhilst the figural designs are traditionally attributed to the Flemish artist Jan Van Orley- it would seem likely that the landscape setting may have been the work of Augustin Coppens. In this collaboration they were echoing the work of Nicholas Poussin and Charles Le Brun at the royal tapestry works at Gobelins from the 1680s. This particular design is known to have been woven by various members of the Borght weaving dynasty but signed examples are rare. A similar example, catalogued as being from the "workshop Van der Borcht, Brussels, 1737" hangs in the Princes' Chamber in the Maastricht Town Hall. For a similar tapestry depicting this exact scene "MOISE SAUVE DES EAUX"- attributed to Peter and Frans Van Der Borght but unsigned and reduced in width, see Christie's Paris 'Important Mobilier Et Objets D'art, Tableaux Et Ceramiques', 7th December 2005, lot 144 sold EUR 36,000. Literature: N. de Reniès, 'Jean van Orley Cartonnier: La Tenture d'Achille au Musée Jacquemart- André', Gazette des beaux Arts, February 1995, p. 172 Condition Report: Lacking original border, edges trimmed and now with plain blue material border and later backing. The signature and town mark look to have been extricated from the margins of the original piece and dropped back in to the lower right hand margin. The stitching and weave are a match for the main panel but they are now held in with yellow thread and have variances of design at odds with their new location. Overall the tapestry has colour muting and loss. The surface is slightly rumpled and creased from folding and will benefit from smoothing out before display. Some pulling to threads and sections- these may again benefit from remedial work. With the fixed later backing it is impossible to determine the extent to which there may have been repairs but from the the front there are indications of scattered small spot repairs, tightening and remedial work throughout the surface Please see additional images for visual references to condition which form part of this condition report. All lots are available for inspection and Condition Reports are available on request. Some interior photos taken c.1982 show a number of the pieces on display in the family house and an inventory undertaken in 1948 by the local Campden auctioneer and valuer Alfred Bower lists many of the items. Extracts of the 1948 inventory are included where they correspond to the relevant lots in the sale. This censer might be part of item 388 on the 1948 inventory incorrectly described as ‘3 Chinese Blue and White Cylinder pen holders on carved wood stand Kang Hsi 6” high’. In some old English reference books Chinese censers were often incorrectly described as pen or brush holders.See the attached photo taken around 1982, showing the ‘eighteen luohan’ censer on display in the Entrance Hall of the Chipping Campden residence. The censer has a crack extending from midway on the body curving across next to the foot and up to midway on the body at the inscribed dedication. There is also a firing crack to the inside edge of the foot which is not visible on the interior, typical minor glaze imperfections all over, some slight caramelisation and staining to the glaze to the underside of the censer. The wood stand is slightly misshapen and has a few fine age cracksPLEASE NOTE:- Prospective buyers are strongly advised to examine personally any goods in which they are interested BEFORE the auction takes place. London Gazette 11 May 1937: ‘In recognition of valuable services rendered in the field in connection with the operations in Palestine during the period April - October 1936.’ R.R.C. London Gazette 1 January 1942. The original recommendation states: ‘Miss Coulthurst opened the R.A.F. Hospital, Littleport, at the outbreak of war with speed and efficiency. She was posted to Torquay in April 1940, and has since maintained a high standard of efficiency.’ R.R.C. Second Award Bar London Gazette 14 June 1945. The original recommendation states: ‘Operational Commands 1 August 1944 - 31 January 1945 - Middle East. This lady was appointed Chief Principal Matron in March, 1944 and since then she has visited all hospitals and units where personnel of P.M.R.A.F.N.S. are serving in the Mediterranean, Middle East, India, Iraq and Aden. She has dealt with many problems in the most tactful and understanding manner and has been a great help to the Matrons in opening up new general hospitals in India. Miss Coulthurst has been a tower of strength to the Nursing Service in overseas commands.’ Of a total of 100 R.R.C. and Bars issued, only 4 have been awarded to members of Princess Mary’s Royal Air Force Nursing Service, and the award to Miss Coulthurst was the first. Moreover, her O.B.E. (Military) was the first ever operational award to a member of the P.M.R.A.F.N.S. - the sprinkling of earlier awards having been associated with the New Year and Birthday Honours Lists. Approximately 39 General Service Medals with clasp ‘Palestine’ were awarded to P.M.R.A.F.N.S. Winifred Maud Coulthurst was born in Salford in 1887, and was appointed Sister in the Royal Air Force Nursing Service in May 1920, advancing to Senior Sister in the P.M.R.A.F.N.S. in January 1930. Coulthurst was promoted to Matron in January 1932, and Chief Principal Matron (the equivalent rank of Group Captain) in March 1944. She served in Basrah, Iraq; Aden in 1929 and in Palestine in 1936 before her initial posting of the Second War at Littleport and the Torquay Palace Hotel Convalescent Hospital. The following detail is given of her time at the latter in Sky Wards, A History of the Princess Mary’s Royal Air Force Nursing Service by Mary Mackie: ‘The Officer’s Convalescent Hospital now flourished near Torquay, in the former Palace Hotel at Babbacombe. By the end of 1939 it had achieved its full capacity of 249 equipped beds and, after minor alterations, four bedrooms on the second floor had become an operating theatre. Patients recuperating in cosy rooms holding two or three beds, rather than in crowded wards, found the hospital a pleasant spot.... Matron W. M. Coulthurst led a nursing team of twenty-one members of the P.M.R.A.F.N.S. - four senior sisters, ten junior sisters and some VAD nurses - plus a number of nursing orderlies. Other staff included R.A.F. doctors and dentists, administration and supporting personnel, and about eighty civilian ancillary workers, most of whom were former hotel employees. Altogether, Torquay gave employment to around 200 people.... The hospital became known for its lively and optimistic atmosphere. BBC correspondent Macdonald Hastings, writing in London Calling, the overseas journal of the BBC, in October 1941, describes it as being like a country club, but with incomparable amenities: ‘wooded grounds with velvet lawns, tropical trees, luxurious flower beds... golf course, tennis courts, squash courts, swimming pool, archery butts, and gymnasium.’ Against this idyllic backdrop: ‘Disaster struck on the bitterly cold, wet morning of 25 October 1942. A Sunday morning, around 1100hrs. Most of the patients were in their rooms, shaving, dressing or reading Sunday papers. Domestic staff tidied up, kitchen hands prepared Sunday lunch, and nurses readied themselves for doctors’ rounds. Fred Payne, gowned and masked, was assisting in the operating theatre. Fluffy Ogilvie was on the first floor... As Fluffy and the MO went into the patients’ room, ‘we both saw, through the large windows, German planes, with their Swastikas clearly visible. There was no time to be brave or heroic, we dived under the bed...’ After preliminary machine-gun strafing, the enemy dropped high-explosive 500 kilo bombs. The first scored a direct hit on the east wing. The second landed in the road, its blast shattering windows, doors and partitions in the west wing and severely damaging the operating theatre. Lamps over the operating table fell on to the unconscious patient and a door flew across the room and knocked out Fred Payne. The floor where Fluffy Ogilvie had taken cover lost its door and windows. Rain and cold air rushed in, but all four patients, plus doctor and nurse, had survived. The latter pair dashed out into the hall to find ‘dust and rubble everywhere and, where there had been a further room, just one big gaping hole... The first body we came to was that of ‘Tinkle’ Bell. I saw her hand and arm sticking out beneath the heavy masonry. I also saw... two bodies which seemed to be hanging from the girder. The bomb had gone through all the floors down to the basement...’ Two platoons of the local home guard had been carrying out exercises close by. Two of their number died in the attack but the rest came to help, along with local air raid precaution volunteers... Through the rubble and dust, shivering against the cold winds that swept through shattered windows and gaping holes in brickwork, men carried laden stretchers to where doctors and nurses made rapid diagnoses, applied dressings and splints, and administered what drugs they could; amid such chaos and destruction they could offer little more than first aid.... Nineteen people died, one was missing, another forty-five suffered injury. Had it not been a Sunday, casualties would have been even worse because many patients would have been in the basement gymnasium and its milk bar, which had been flattened.’ After Torquay, and advancing to Chief Principal Matron, Coulthurst say extensive overseas postings for the remainder of the war. Chief Principal Matron Coulthurst retired in January 1947. In later life she resided at Limehurst St Margaret’s Road, Altrincham, Cheshire, and died at the Royal Infirmary Manchester in April 1950. Sold with the following related items and documents: Riband bar; named Buckingham Palace enclosure for R.R.C. Second Award Bar; Air Ministry letter of appreciation on the occasion of recipient’s retirement, signed by Philip Noel-Baker, then Secretary of State for Air, dated 16 January 1947; newspaper cuttings and photographic image of recipient; with copied research.

SEX PISTOLS POSTER - A Rare survivor from the Roadie who was at the Gig and a friend of Martin who was the band member of the support act on the night, Albert Dock. This Sex Pistols Poster is an original 1976 Handbill / Poster and an extremely rare piece of original early Sex Pistols Promotional Material. It was for the show at Eric’s in Liverpool, England on October 15, 1976.The poster is in good condition for its age. It has a small piece missing on the top right of the poster and a small side tear and a little light creasing. Its quite a deep yellow paper with crisp black print. The two figures standing on the rock are John Campbell and Henry Priestman, both member’s of Yachts, and later, It’s Immaterial, and Henry Priestman from The Christians. Martin a member of Albert Dock took the photograph on an art college trip to the Lake District and passed the negative on for the poster production. `The item measures just short of A4 at 295mm x 208mm and it served as both poster and handbill for the gig promotion, the Sex Pistols’ first outing to Liverpool. At that time at Erics, the main act performed upstairs early on in the evening and the support act played downstairs in what would later become the main club area.`This performance came at a pivotal time for the Pistols. Less than a month before, they’d signed a five year management contract with Malcolm McLaren’s Glitterbest Ltd. Three weeks prior to this show, Nick Mobbs of EMI saw the band for the first time, and on October 8, just a week before the Eric’s show, the group officially signed to the label. On October 10 the band recorded an early version of “Anarchy in the UK” with their sound man, Dave Goodman, and beginning on the 12th, they played shows in Dundee, Wolverhampton, and Birkenhead before the Liverpool show on October 15. The Liverpool Echo noted “This gig certainly didn’t have the same impact as the Pistol’s Free Trade Hall gigs in Manchester – in fact it almost went unnoticed as there were only about 50 people there…Eric’s had only just opened on 1 October, and among the first bands to play were the Runaways and the Stranglers. But on 15 October, the infamous Sex Pistols pogo’ed their way into town…Holly Johnston, Paul Rutherford [both later of Frankie Goes to Hollywood], and Pete Burns [Dead or Alive] were all in attendance that night.”Just two days after the Eric’s show, the Pistols recorded the version of “Anarchy in the UK” that EMI released. Five days later, on October 22, Stiff records released The Damned’s “New Rose”, the first-ever UK punk record, beating the Pistols debut single by about a month.Provenance from Richard, a college friend of Martin Watson, Guitarist and Vocals for Albert Dock and later Yachts and who was the roadie for the night. As he states to ensure admission to the gig I was the roadie for Albert Dock ! The other poster is a rare Albert Dock - Return of the Magnificent 7 Poster in fair condition. Thomas Koether (New York, Florida, Europe, Australia, b. 1940) Abstract Painting. Titled: "Red Progression" Dated: '89 Oil on Canvas. Signed and titled verso. Overall Size: 60 x 48 in. (114 - 4266)In 1960, Koether was accepted to the school of the Art Institute of Chicago at age 20. In 1963 Koether Moved to New York City and started going to the Art Students League. In June of 1966 he graduated with honors from N.Y.U. and was accepted to the N.Y.U. graduate school of Communications Arts in Cinematography under Haig Manoogian. In 1970, he moved to Paris to take a studio space at the American Center on Boulevard Raspail. In July of ’71 Koether went to Italy and did a lot of drawing and watercolors. In Florence he met Italian art restorers and learned a lot about restoration from them. That same year, he participated in a group show at the American Center and sold several pieces – one to director Henry Pillsbury. The work from Ibiza and Paris dealt with attempts to delineate abstraction as a form with his own experience of his own abstractness – landscapes and still-lives of his own psychic and emotional space. This work has a post-psychedelic aspect. In 1974 Koether moved back to New York and worked in N.Y.C. as an art restorer with Roger Ricco Associates. That year, he had a one man show at Ajanta Gallery on East 9th Street. In 1976, Koether moved to Australia and established an art conservation business and worked on the 5 major collections of Oceanic art in Australia.
