GUERCINO (GIOVANNI FRANCESCO BARBIERI) (ITALIAN 1591-1666) THE VIRGIN AND CHILD WITH AN OWLpen and brown ink, possibly bister 23.2 x 18.5cm; 9 1/2 x 7 1/4in43.5 x 38cm; 17 1/4 x 15in (framed)Property from a Private Collection, LondonProvenance: John Bouverie (d.1750) Anne Bouverie (d.1757; wife of the above) John Hervey (d.1764; brother of the above) Christopher Hervey (d.1786; son of the above) Elizabeth Bouverie (d.1798; aunt of the above) Sir Charles Middleton, later 1st Baron Barham (d.1813; by bequest from the above) Charles Noel, later 1st Earl of Gainsborough (d.1866; grandson of the above) Charles Noel, 3rd Earl of Gainsborough (d.1926; grandson of the above) Hon. Charles and May Noel (a wedding present from the above prior to the First World War ) Colonel Archibald Noel (inherited from the above, his mother) Thence by descent to the present owner (son of the above)Guercino’s drawings are widely celebrated for the virtuosity of their line and the sensitivity in which subject melds with graphic touch. Whether in caricatures, sacred groups, or mythological figures, Guercino imbued them with a remarkable freedom of expression, often concentrating on moments of heightened emotion and drama. Simultaneously, through the agility and unobstructed movement of their line, Guercino’s drawings permit his viewers to trace the artist’s mind at work. A diversity of graphic passages can be recognised in the present sheet - from careful parallel hatching to quick outlines and spontaneous squiggles. While the figure of the Virgin can be compared to that of Salome in Guercino’s painting, Salome receiving the Head of St John the Baptist of 1637 (Musée des Beaux-Arts, Rennes) and its associated red-chalk study (Royal Collection 902789, verso), the present sheet bears greater resemblance, in subject, style, and medium, to the pen and ink drawings of the 1620s, and in particular, The Virgin and Child with St Anne, circa 1620-25 (British Museum, inv. no. Pp,4.62).The finished nature of the present sheet further suggests that it was either intended as an end in itself or, perhaps, a preparatory study for an unexecuted print. In any case, the inclusion of an owl on the right-hand side of the composition is a curious addition. Owls, and bird imagery more generally, began appearing in Guercino’s oeuvre in the early 1620s (see the painting, Memento Mori, ca. 1622-23, in a private collection, as well as the drawings, Group of Figures, with Owl on a Pole, Art Institute, Chicago, 1922.493; A Young Man with an Owl on a Stick, ca. 1630, RISD Museum, Rhode Island, 2015.85; and The Bird-Catcher, ca. 1625-1632, Morgan Library, New York, 1979.8). In the seventeenth century, owls attracted a wide variety of interpretations, from enlightenment to salacious pursuit, all of which Guercino seems to have conveyed across several of his works. In this Virgin and Child, the owl’s presence would certainly bend the interpretation towards the clarity of spiritual vision, particularly considering the animal’s placement on the same level as the Virgin’s sightline. The sharp-eyed creature is, furthermore, an apt, if humorous, inclusion for an artist known to have been cross-eyed (il guercino being the Italian diminutive for guercio, the squinter).Adding to the fascination of this sheet is its exceptional, unbroken provenance traceable to the prestigious Bouverie Collection in the eighteenth century. John Bouverie (ca. 1723–1750) was an intrepid British art collector who amassed an array of important drawings by, among others, Michelangelo, Raphael, Rembrandt and an extensive group by Guercino. The latter may even have been acquired directly from Guercino’s descendants (see, Nicholas Turner, “John Bouverie as a Collector of Drawings” in The Burlington Magazine vol. 136, no. 109, p.91).

Supposedly the name The Launderers came about due to the members being committed to washing each other’s clean laundry in public, an apparent reference to their desire to promote, rather than denigrate, each other. They often held these 'Laundries' at the home of Gilbert Beith, known as Hollywood, in Gomshall, Surrey. The group concentrated on the theatre district in London’s West End, and they wrote and performed plays in small theatres and other private venues, most commonly in a restaurant called The Cutty Sark. Members included Brian Hill and George Harvey who most likely inscribed the third title listed above to Gilbert Beith. The group’s activities were recorded from 1924-1930 by Joanna Elder Giles, a young Australian woman from a wealthy and influential family. She became acquainted with The Launderers through a friend, and quickly met one of the group’s members; her soon-to-be writing partner, Brian Hill, with whom she wrote mystery novels under the pseudonym of Marcus Magill.

LITERATURE: Karl & Faber, Munich, auction on November 23-25, 1978, lot 450. Toward the city, the view is directed across the Tiber valley to Rome, where the dome of St. Peter's Basilica and the buildings of the Vatican can be seen, to the right of which is Monte Mario with two pine trees and the villas in the distance. Hackert effectfully plays with the resting hikers in the foreground and the hazy expanse from which the silhouette of the city emerges, underlined by his mastery in the wash sepia drawing. Many of the drawings are in renowned graphic collections, such as the Albertina in Vienna, the Pierpont Morgan Library and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, as well as the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin and the Stiftung Weimarer Klassik, thus underscoring Hackert’s immense importance in classical landscape painting in Goethe’s days. Another cast of 'The Charm Doctor' can be found in the collection of the Smithsonian Institute (USNM no. E23732-0), donated into the collection by the artist's wife and where it is noted to have been exhibited at the Salon Société des Artistes Français, Paris in 1902. There is also another cast of the sculpture, titled 'Le Sorcier' exhibited at the Musée d'arts de Nantes.Herbert Ward longed for adventure, and at the age of 15, he left England to satisfy his curiosities, spending his youth travelling extensively. In 1884, Ward set out for the Congo where he worked for various companies managing the transport of goods and supplies both to and from Europe. A year into his time in the Congo, Ward joined Henry Morgan Stanley's expedition travelling on the rivers across the country. Ward's appreciation and fascination for the Congo and it's people encouraged him to learn local languages and customs, allowing him to develop good relationships with various communities.Ward left Africa in 1889 and began a career as a touring writer and lecturer, where he paid a particular focus to his time in the Congo. Four years later he turned his attention to the Arts and began his formal artistic training. This led him to Paris to pursue bronze casting and his travel journals from the Congo became a source of inspiration for his sculptures. During his time in Paris, both the French Academy and the general public enjoyed his Congolese subjects. His style adopted a more natural depiction of the human figure, but Ward emphasised that his sculptures were not presented as scientific illustrations, rather they were art to share 'the spirit of Africa in the broad sense'. Throughout his artistic career, Ward begun to question colonialism, especially in Africa. During the First World War, Ward served as a Lieutenant in No. 3 Convoy of the British Ambulance Committee where he distinguished himself.
