[Robert] Tangate, London, a late 18th century mahogany stick barometer, the broken pediment above silvered scale engraved 'Tangate London', above visible tube and turned cistern cover with adjuster below, 98cm. Robert Tangate worked in the Fleet Street area from 1766 until his death in 1808. He was first apprenticed to John Morgan from 1752, then George Adams who was instrument maker to the King

[Thrilling Incidents of the Convict System in Australasia: How it Grew and was Nourished and how it Declined, and what Evils and what Good have Arisen from it, by Eric Gibb, compiled from Authentic Sources, from Information contained in Official Documents and other Records], author's orig. manuscript, c. 1895,. comprising separately numbered sections, Preface, The Hulks, Norfolk Island, New South Wales, Tasmania, and Some Concluding Remarks (7, 163, 111, 89, 171 & 26 pp. respec.), all text written to rectos only, some publishers pencil marks and comments, a little soiling and creasing and occasional marginal chipping, 8vo, together with a sixteen verse manuscript poem entitled 'The Death of the Bushranger [Dan] Morgan, Composed by the Rev. John Graham, copies by the Rev. William Bradley [this last line crossed out], Sydney, 18th April 1865, six page manuscript in a fair hand, written to rectos only, 8vo Eric Gibb's book was published by Hammond & Green, London, in 1895. The published books is 155 pp. and includes nine leaves of plates. Four copies have been traced in Australian libraries. This lot and the following lot have come from the descendents of Francis George Coles, who raised the prison hulk HMS Success from the bed of Sydney Harbour in 1891 and put it on display. He also commissioned Eric Gibb's work, one of the earliest works on the subject. (2)
