First in PCGS holder graded MS64 Weak, second in NGC holder graded “Brilliant Uncirculated”, toned obverse, third in PCGS holder graded MS65, attractive, fourth in NGC holder graded MS63, toned, the last in NGC holder graded MS63, unevenly toned with most of original lustre remaining. First in NGC holder graded MS64, the second good extremely fine with a few contact marks on the obverse, the other three in ANA, NGC and PCGS holders respectively, all graded MS65, all with original mint lustre, the 1881 toned, a high grade group including the scarce second reverse 1879-S. First three with a few surface marks, otherwise mint state, toned with underlying lustre, 1892 almost uncirculated with attractive underlying lustre, 1893 extremely fine, both scarce issues, the last attractive mint state with highly reflective fields. First uncirculated with small surface marks by forehead, toned, the third about uncirculated with uneven rainbow toning and a few light scratches across cheek, the others brilliant mint state with full lustre, the Carlson City issue scarce. The 1896 about uncirculated with a couple of scratches on the Liberty face, 1897 with a few dark spots on obverse, otherwise mint state with mirrored fields, the others mint state with minor bagmarks, variously toned. (5)

The 1887 in PCGS holder graded MS63, a slightly matt tone, the other Morgan Dollars all in ANACS holders graded MS63 with original lustre and peripheral toning, the Peace Dollar very fine. (5)

BRITISH COINS, Anglo-Saxon, Harold II (6 January - 14 October 1066), Silver Penny, PAX type, Lewes mint, moneyer Oswold, crowned head left, sceptre in front, legend commences at top, +HAROLD REX ANG, outer beaded circle surrounding both sides, rev PAX between parallel beaded horizontal lines, inner beaded circle surrounding, legend commences lower left, +OZPOLD ON LEPEEI, 1.32g (SCBI 1:972-3, same dies; N 836; S 1186). Extremely fine, attractively toned and very pleasing, rare. ex Chancton Farm Hoard, Steyning, Sussex, 1867 ex Sir John Evans (died 1908) collection, purchased by Spink, sold en bloc before auction sale ex J Pierrepont Morgan (died 1913) collection, sold through his son 1915 with first choice going to the British Museum and majority of the remainder sold to Mr R C Lockett. ex Richard Cyril Lockett collection, English portion (part I), Glendining, 6-9 June 1955, lot 867, sold for £11 ex Spink Numismatic Circular, December 2007, item HS3209 The Chancton Farm Hoard was reported to the Numismatic Society 18 April 1867 and published in the Numismatic Chronicle, third Series, volume VII, by Barclay V Head. The find consisted of at least 1720 coins (some were dispersed before this quantity reached the British Museum) of mainly Edward the Confessor. 58 examples were recovered of King Harold II of which 35 were of the moneyer Oswold working at the Lewes mint. The two examples in the Fitzwilliam Museum referenced above are also from the Chancton Farm Hoard, one with an upright die axis and one with an inverted die axis. The coin offered here has a 3 o’clock die axis and all are struck from the same dies.
