* EUGEN DEKKERT (GERMAN 1865 - 1956),HORSE AND CARToil on canvas, signedimage size 51cm x 61cm, overall size 62cm x 72cm Framed.Note: Eugen Dekkert was generally known in Scotland as "Eugene" as the pronunciation of his name (Oigun) was a little unusual for some Scots. Dekkert was born in 1865 in Stettin, Germany aka Szczecin (and now part of Poland under the Potsdam Agreement of 1945) and he came to live in Scotland as a young man. He first lived in Glasgow and then settled in the East Neuk of Fife in the early 20th century. He and his wife Emma were living in St Monans at both the 1901 and 1911 census. The fact that he lived there explains why he often painted the harbour at St Monans. It was written in 1906 that "the sea is never absent from his work" and that his style was "strongly individual". He had studied at the Academy in Munich as a student of Theodor Hummel. Presumably, he returned to Germany at the time of the Great War. Eugen Dekkert participated in numerous prestigious art exhibitions in Berlin, Dresden and Munich. Many of his works are in international as well as German museums, such as the Neue Pinakothek in Munich. Eugen Dekkert died in 1956. Dekkert is often referred to in the UK as Scottish and sometimes as Dutch. His dates are also frequently recorded incorrectly and even his time in Scotland is misreported probably because his work continued to be exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy and at other venues until at least 1938. However, after 1913 his address was listed (in RSA exhibiting records) as "c/o Messrs James McClure & Son, 130 Wellington Street, Glasgow", so one can reasonably conclude that he was selling through McClure as an agent and was no longer resident in Scotland.
