Property of a deceased's estate'Harley-Davidson' Board Track ReplicaRegistration no. not registeredFrame no. none visibleEngine no. none visibleThere being no purpose-built motorcycle racetracks in the sport's pioneering years, the first competitive events in the USA were held on existing velodromes built for cycle racing. The major manufacturers were involved from the start, there being no greater rivalry than that between Indian and Harley-Davidson. This 'Harley-Davidson' Board Track Replica belonged to the lady vendor's late father. It has not been possible to identify the frame and engine, although the latter's design strongly suggests it may have been intended for a non-motorcycle application. Sadly, there is no known history. Following a period of storage and inactivity, the machine will require recommissioning, or possibly more extensive restoration, before use and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves with regard to the motorcycle's provenance, age, completeness, originality, and mechanical condition prior to bidding. Property of a deceased's estate1929 Harley-Davidson 45ci Model DRegistration no. BF 8437Frame no. 29D6777 (on plate)Engine no. 29D6777• Iconic Harley-Davidson model• Acquired in 2018• Corbin speedometerAlthough Harley-Davidson was no stranger to sidevalve ('flat head') engines, it did not apply this valve gear arrangement to a v-twin until the arrival of the all-new 45ci 'D' (standard) and 'DL' (high-compression) models in 1929. With the introduction of the Powerplus model in 1916, rivals Indian had demonstrated that a properly designed 'flat head' could produce all the power a road rider required, so it is perhaps surprising that Harley took so long to follow suit. One of the other advantages of this new engine was that it was cheaper to produce, enabling Harley to price the new 45ci (750cc) Model D at $290, and the 45's relative affordability would prove to be an important factor during the Depression years of the early 1930s. Production of the 45 really took off when the USA's entry into WW2 in December 1941 created an unprecedented demand for military motorcycles; around 90,000 of the WL (military) version rolling off the Milwaukee production lines before hostilities ceased. 'De-mobbed' Harley 45s helped meet the upsurge in demand for motorcycles in the immediate post-war years, doing much to establish the marque's reputation worldwide, while the civilian version remained a catalogued model until the end of 1951. This Vintage-era Model D was acquired by the current vendor's late father in 2018. A self-employed gas turbine engineer. Motorcycles were his passion and had been from a young age. He loved the look of this Model D, so much so, it stood proudly in the hallway. This Harley previously belonged to a Mr Nicholas Julian Moss of Berkshire. Following a period of inactivity, the machine will require recommissioning to a greater or lesser extent and thus is sold strictly as viewed. The machine features a Corbin speedometer and comes with a small selection of spares to include a pair of pillion footrests, rear numberplate/light bracket, and assorted electrical wiring. Accompanying documents include a current V5C; Harley-Davidson spare parts manual and Rider's Hand Book; and a folder containing various invoices/bills, including for repair of the gearbox in 2019.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Property of a deceased's estate2003 Harley-Davidson 883cc XL SportsterRegistration no. KX05 OVWFrame no. *5HD4CJM105K448002*Engine no. *CJM5448002*In 1982 Harley-Davidson introduced a new welded frame, replacing the traditional lugged type in use hitherto, and then the following year saw the introduction of two new Sportsters: the XLX and XR-1000, the former being a more affordable base model intended to attract new customers. In 1986 Harley-Davidson's new all-alloy Evolution engine became available in the ever-popular Sportster, the model having recently been up-graded with Harley's diaphragm clutch, alternator electrics and five-speed gearbox. The new Sportster was initially offered in 883cc and 1,100cc sizes, the latter being opened out to 1,200cc for 1988.This lovely example was purchased new by the late vendor from Silverstone Harley-Davidson and displays a current mileage of 12,494. Fitted with the factory colour of Sierra Red Pearl and a laced rear wheel, this Sportster hasn't been used in the last few years so will need recommissioning to a greater or lesser extent before use. Offered with a current V5C, purchase receipt and expired MoT's.Offered with keyFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The Anthony R. East Classic Motorcycle Collection1959 DKW RT175Registration no. MMN-866-A (Isle of Man)Frame no. 45592690Engine no. 47076630 (see text)One of DKWs last introductions immediately prior to WW2 was the immensely influential RT125, which was manufactured post-war by Harley-Davidson as the Model 'S' and BSA as the Bantam. DKW themselves recommenced production of the RT125 in 1949, and in February 1951 introduced an enlarged derivative, the RT200, followed by the RT250 and RT175, the latter a new arrival in the autumn of 1953. Originally registered in the UK as 'SRD 816', this DKW RT175 comes with its original logbook showing that Stocker & Sheppard Limited of Reading sold it new to a Mr George Smith of Streatley, Berkshire, who was still the recorded keeper in 2004 (the logbook records an engine change in 1976). The accompanying old-style V5C document shows that the DKW had only one private owner from new until at least June 2004 when that document was issued. Apparently, the immediately preceding owner bought the unrestored machine in 2008 from the original owner, who had used it until a few years previously, and then went through and rewired/replaced what was needed. Restored throughout and very nicely presented today, the DKW was later registered in the Isle of Man as 'MMN-866-A' while owned by Tony. Also on file are two original instruction manuals; two expired MoTs; and a quantity of miscellaneous paperwork. Offered with keyFootnotes:If purchased by a UK resident, this machine will be subject to a NOVA Declaration, which Bonhams will undertake at no cost to the buyer. This declaration facilitates the registration process with the DVLA in the UK.All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 481

1936 Harley-Davidson 74ci VLD 'Police'Registration no. 594 YUHFrame no. 36VLD4859 (See text)Engine no. 36VLD4859• First registered in the UK in 2012• Present family ownership since 2012• An older restoration• Requires recommissioningThe 'flat head' (sidevalve) Harley-Davidson VL 'Big Twin' was announced in July 1929 as a replacement for the inlet-over-exhaust 'pocket valve' twins that had been in production since 1911. The twin headlamps, round toolbox and Klaxon horn were carried over from its immediate predecessor, but nearly all of the rest of the bike was new. Harley's 1930 brochure described the new 74ci machine as 'standing head and shoulders above all comers, with such startling new features as a 20% more powerful motor with Ricardo removable heads, interchangeable wheels, bigger tires, drop-centre rims, lower riding position, greater road clearance, automatic increase of generator output, drop forged forks, 100% stronger frame, theft proof lock, dual front drive chain, improved clutch, and many other features making the 1930 Big Twin the greatest motorcycle value ever offered.' Despite its maker's evident enthusiasm, the model V was far from an instant success. More massively built and heavier than its predecessor, the V lacked top-end power to such an extent that the first examples were recalled for an extensive engine redesign. A larger crankcase accommodating heavier flywheels did the trick and, its problems solved, the 74ci 'flat head' went on to win the hearts of Harley enthusiasts everywhere. This example's 'VLD' nomenclature indicates that it left the factory as a generator-equipped model fitted with high-compression pistons. Imported by the previous owner (date unknown), the machine was first registered in the UK in 2012. It was in its current restored condition when purchased by the vendor's late relative that year, but has been unused for many years since. An older restoration, the Harley features painted cylinder heads; California Highway Patrol transfers to the tank; first aid box; fire extinguisher; crash bars; and a Corbyn 100mph speedometer, while there is some light surface corrosion to the brightwork. It is not known when the machine last ran, but it was last taxed to April 2013. Recommissioning to a greater or lesser extent will be required before it returns to the road (the engine turns over, with compression). Sold strictly as viewed, the machine is offered with a V5C document; expired MoT (2013); DVLA correspondence; and an AMCA 'Junior First' award (date unknown). It should be noted the frame number is not a factory Harley-Davidson stamp (Harleys of this period did not have frame numbers) and is believed to be a DVLA-issued VIN to facilitate its UK registration. Key in on/off switch.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 290

1969 Laverda 750 GT 'American Eagle'Registration no. PFJ 320GFrame no. LAV750 1648Engine no. 750 1648•One of only some 150 made•First registered in the UK in 2021•Most collectible and sought after modelsShortly after the Laverda 750GT went on sale in Europe, McCormack International Motors Incorporated, a vehicle importing business, concluded a deal with the Italian factory to market the model in the USA under the 'American Eagle' brand name. Unfortunately for Jack McCormack, Laverda's 750 twins were soon upstaged by the four-cylinder Honda CB750, which was not only better specified but cheaper too, and only some 150 had been imported when McCormack went bust. With relatively few made and even fewer still in existence, the American Eagle is now one of Laverda's most collectible and sought after models. American Eagle is also famous as having kick-started Evel Knievel's career. The brand sponsored the American stunt rider, who wore a distinctive jumpsuit and cape with the American Eagle logo across the front of his leathers and on his helmet. He used a modified American Eagle 750 to complete several record-breaking jumps, suffering some spectacular crashes. Eventually Harley-Davidson realised the marketing potential and provided Knievel with a Harley-Davidson XR750 for his jumps. This very early US-market American Eagle 750 GT was first registered in the UK on 1st September 2021 and has had one former keeper in this country. Its history in the USA is unknown. There is a video of the machine running, available to view on the Bonhams website. The machine is offered with sundry invoices; photocopied technical literature; suspension instructions; owner's manual/parts list; repair guide; copy online advertisement; and a current V5C document. A 4' round brake light lamp lens is included in the sale.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 425

2009 Harley-Davidson XR1200Registration no. GY58KZGFrame no. 5HD1LA6159K412716Engine no. LA69412716Introduced in 2008, the XR1200 was styled like Harley-Davidson's XR750 flat-track racers, which have dominated that branch of US motorcycle sport since time immemorial. It was first seen in prototype form at the 2006 Cologne Show, the resulting favourable reaction encouraging H-D to commit to full production. The XR1200 was a member of the long-running Sportster family, though with its riding dynamics further refined to enable it to compete with other retro-style 'nakeds' such as Ducati's GT1000 and Moto Guzzi's Griso. Indeed, the XR1200 was of special significance for Harley-Davidson as it was designed exclusively to meet the needs of the European market. The Milwaukee manufacturer would seem to have succeeded in its goal, MCN declaring that the XR1200, 'performs and handles better than any Harley before.' The fuel-injected version of Harley's familiar air-cooled v-twin engine had an increased compression ratio, raised rev ceiling and 2-into-1-into-2 exhaust system, resulting in a maximum power output of 90bhp and 74ft/lbs of torque. The vendor describes this example as being in excellent condition and recently started. It has only covered 6,861 miles since new, the current second owner having acquired it in February 2017 and riding it for a mere 1,800 miles. The last service, which included a new rear tyre, was carried out at Warrs in May 2017. The most recent MOT was valid until May 2018, after which it was declared SORN and carefully stored. Included in the history file is the original Shaw Harley Davidson purchase invoice, a 2008 Sportster Models owner's manual, a Warrs invoice, V5C, an old-style V5C, and a collection of previous MOT certificates. Please note that the V5C does not correctly record the engine number.2 keysOffered with keyFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 482

1927 Harley-Davidson 61ci 'Model J' Motorcycle CombinationRegistration no. BF 9642Frame no. 27F11968Engine no. 27J12205 (see text)• Present family ownership since 2012• First registered in the UK in 2021• An older restoration• Requires recommissioning1909 marked the appearance of Harley-Davidson's first v-twin motorcycle, though it was not until the adoption of mechanically operated inlet valves in 1911 (replacing the 'atmospheric' type inherited from the single) that production really took off. Known by the sobriquet 'pocket valve', this 'F-head' (inlet-over-exhaust) engine - built in 61ci and 74ci capacities (1,000cc and 1,200cc respectively) - would remain in production for the next 20 years. The Harley single's transmission arrangements - direct drive by means of a leather belt - were continued at first on the twin, but the need to make better use of the engine's power characteristics, particularly for sidecar pulling, prompted the introduction of a two-speed rear hub for 1914, by which time chain drive and a proper clutch had been adopted. Later that same year a conventional, three-speed, sliding-gear transmission with 'step starter' was introduced on the top-of-the-range version of the twin which, with full electrical equipment, was listed from now on as the 'Model J'. Periodically revised and up-dated, the 'J' had gained a front brake, stronger fork and pumped lubrication by the time production ceased in 1929.Imported by a previous owner (date unknown), this Model J was purchased by the vendor's late relative in 2012 but not first registered in the UK until 2021. It was in its current restored condition when purchased but has been unused for many years since. We are advised that the deceased owner had the sidecar manufactured to accommodate family members. It is fitted with a brake but otherwise the sidecar's origin and specification are not known. It is not known when the machine last ran, and recommissioning to a greater or lesser extent will be required before further use (the engine turns over, with compression). Sold strictly as viewed, the machine comes with a 2012 V62 Application to Register an Imported Vehicle; a 2013 receipt for various electrical works; and a current V5C document. It should be noted that the frame and engine numbers listed suggest that the motorcycle is made up of both Model F and Model J components. Furthermore, the engine number is not an original factory stamping (per the AMCA dating letter); accordingly, prospective bidders must satisfy themselves with regard to the condition, completeness, authenticity and correctness of the machine's components prior to bidding. The machine also comes with a quantity of photocopied parts listings; a photocopied rider's handbook; and keys for the ignition and sidecar boot.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

c. 2000 Honda SRX50 ShadowRegistration no. not registeredFrame no. JH2AF42BXWK004702Engine no. to be advisedAlthough looking like a cross between a Harley-Davidson and a Vespa, the SRX50 was never exported to the USA, its distribution being confined to Japan and Europe. Known as the Joker in its home country and the Shadow elsewhere, the SRX50 featured a 49cc two-stroke engine with case-reed induction producing a maximum of 4.5bhp, while other specification highlights include an electric starter; CVT ('twist 'n go' automatic) transmission; and a disc front brake. The Shadow was never officially imported into the UK, those that did make it to this country being 'grey imports'. Believed unused, this unregistered Shadow was imported by BAT Motorcycles of Biggin Hill, Kent. There are no documents with this Lot. Lot 483

Present ownership since 19631925 Harley-Davidson 1,000cc Model JERegistration no. UC 8234Frame no. 25F 8950Engine no. 253JE 11993• Extensive history file• Engine rebuild by William Healing• Recommissioning recommended following storage Boyhood friends William S Harley and Arthur Davidson began experimenting with powered transport in the early 1900s, producing their first complete production motorcycle around 1903. Little more than a motorised bicycle, the first prototype Harley-Davidson had proved fragile, prompting a major redesign and the establishment of a reputation for ruggedness that endures to this day. Like many of their contemporaries, Harley-Davidson laid out their engine along De Dion lines. A single-cylinder four-stroke displacing 24.74ci (405cc), the latter remained in production essentially unchanged until superseded by a 30.16ci (494cc) version in 1909. Of greater significance was the appearance that same year of the firm's first v-twin, though this would turn out to be a failure and was dropped at the year's end. The twin returned for 1911 in redesigned form boasting mechanically operated inlet valves (replacing the 'atmospheric' type inherited from the single) and production really took off. Known by the sobriquet 'pocket valve', this 'F-head' (inlet-over-exhaust) engine - built in 61ci and 74ci capacities (1,000cc and 1,200cc respectively) - would remain in production for the next 20 years.Purchased by our vendor in July 1963, when it was attached to a sidecar, this Harley-Davidson Model JE was restored in the early 1980s, the works including complete engine rebuild by William Healing; gearbox and clutch strip and rebuild; clutch sprocket re-toothed; nickel plating of all brightwork; brakes relined; and new tyres fitted. Following restoration, the Harley was ridden for 15 miles and then laid up in dry storage where it has remained ever since, in the dining room to begin with and then in a dry garage. Pre- and post-restoration photographs are on file and this well documented Harley also comes with numerous restoration invoices. Following a period of inactivity, the machine will require recommissioning to a greater or lesser extent and thus is sold strictly was viewed (the engine turns over). The owner is selling due to lack of use and advancing years. The machine also comes with an old-style buff logbook issued in January 1948, which records a change of frame to the current '25F 8950' (as listed in the accompanying old-style V5). It should be noted that the engine number appears to show evidence of a double-stamped '5' and '9'. Accordingly, prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's authenticity and originality prior to bidding.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
