Alberto Pagani's 9th place on the 250's Dutch TT debut in 1960 demonstrated the bike's potential, which was confirmed the following week when Pagani finished 5th at the Belgian Grand Prix. The need for more power led to short-stroke engine dimensions (of 72x61mm) being adopted on the 250 for 1964, by which time a 350cc version had appeared. With increased power came increasing unreliability, necessitating a re-design for 1966. Although the pushrod Aermacchi never won a World Championship race, it did achieve a number of 2nd places, Alan Barnett's in the 1970 Junior TT being one of the most memorable. Despite a lack of ultimate success in Grands Prix, the Aermacchi single was outstandingly successful at national level and today, having benefited from another three decades of development, remains a competitive force in historic motorcycle racing. Its engine capacity and history unknown, this Aermacchi racer was purchased five years ago from the IoM and has not been used since. The machine's mechanical condition is likewise unknown and thus it is sold strictly as viewed. Formerly part of the Comerford's Museum Collection 1920 Harley-Davidson 584cc Model W ProjectRegistration no. not registeredEngine no. 20W2093Inspired by the British Douglas, the Harley-Davidson Model W would prove more popular in Europe than America where the v-twin engine held sway. The Model W was introduced in 1919 and, like Douglas, Harley set its horizontally-opposed engine lengthways in the frame. Displacing 584cc, the 6hp twin was not overly powerful but the Model W obviously handled well and possessed a decent turn of speed, as evidenced by numerous record-breaking achievements. Nevertheless, American motorcyclists remained unconvinced and H-D pulled the plug on this promising design in 1923. Only 9,883 were built, of which 60-or-so are believed roadworthy today.Presented in 'barn find' condition, this Model W formerly formed part of a private museum at Comerfords Limited of Thames Ditton but has been sitting in a dry barn since the business was sold some years ago. The machine is offered directly from the Comerfords family. The vendor advises us that as far as he is aware the machine has never undergone any restoration; however there are some paint touch-ups in places and the fuel tank appears to be an older restoration. JTOR/D 13560•Ex-Eric Fernihough Brooklands engine•Sprinted, raced and hill-climbed by Messrs Barton and Knight•Purchased by its late owner in 1979•Offered for sympathetic restorationIntroduced in 1922, the JAP-powered SS80 achieved instant fame when a racing version ridden by George became the first sidevalve-engined machine to lap Brooklands at over 100mph. With the new SS80's performance threatening to put the overhead-valve MkI in the shade, it was decided to completely redesign the latter. The result was the legendary SS100. First shown to the public in 1924, the SS100 employed an entirely new overhead-valve 980cc JAP v-twin engine. A frame of duplex cradle type was devised for the newcomer, which soon after its launch became available with the distinctive, Harley-Davidson-influenced, Castle front fork patented by George Brough and Harold 'Oily' Karslake. And just in case prospective customers had any doubts about the SS100's performance, each machine came with a written guarantee that it had been timed at over 100mph for a quarter of a mile - a staggering achievement at a time when very few road vehicles of any sort were capable of reaching three-figure speeds. With this level of performance available in road trim, it was only to be expected that the SS100 would make an impact on the race track, particularly the ultra-fast Brooklands oval, and the exploits of Brough Superior riders - among them Le Vack, Temple, Baragwanath, Fernihough and Pope - did much to burnish the marque's image. When Brooklands closed forever at the outbreak of WW2, Noel Pope's Brough Superior held both the sidecar and solo lap records, the latter at an average speed of 124.51mph. Success in an altogether different branch of motorcycle sport resulted in one of Brough's most iconic models: the SS100 'Alpine Grand Sports' or 'AGS'. Introduced in September 1925 for the 1926 season, this new machine took its name from the Austrian Alpine Trial, the 1925 event having been contested by a number of SS100s, one ridden by George Brough himself, resulting in the award of six cups, including one for 'Best Performance'. The introduction of the Alpine Grand Sports coincided with that of a new frame for the SS100, and the AGS came as standard with a lower compression ratio (making it more suitable for touring), a small fly-screen and a pair of tool boxes. Brough entered the 1930s with an entirely JAP-powered range and then in 1936 the SS100 was redesigned with an engine built by Associated Motor Cycles, in which form it continued until production ceased in 1939. Lighter and faster than the subsequent Matchless-engined version, the JAP-powered SS100 has long been regarded as the ultimate incarnation of this famous model. This particular SS100 - frame number 'S1000' - was despatched on 1st May 1929 complete with the spring frame, Castle forks and a two-seater sidecar, as recorded on the accompanying copy of its Works Record Card. The machine was supplied to R Evans & Sons and registered on Anglesey as 'EY 3601'. Frame number 'S1000' is a very clear factory stamping but the final two 00s appear to be over-stamped, possibly reflecting the fact that the frame had been returned to the factory and then reissued. Although the frame number is recorded in the HPI database as 'S1060', this is clearly a clerical error resulting from a misreading of the old RF.60 continuation logbook. Issued in July 1956, the logbook records regular licensing in Kent up to March 1959. The first name in the RF.60 is that of Reginald Barton of Farnborough, Kent, who registered the Brough on 22nd July 1952. Well-known motorcycling journalist John Griffith wrote an article about Reg Barton and his Broughs for Motor Cycling's 30th January 1958 edition (copy on file). There is also an old V5 on file. (The registration 'EY 3601' is recorded in the DVLA and HPI databases; nevertheless, prospective purchasers must satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's registration status prior to bidding.)The next owner listed in the RF.60 is Richard ('Dick') Knight, the well-known Brough Superior exponent and former Club President, who acquired 'EY 3601' in September 1975 and is believed to have rebuilt the machine in its present form. Engine 'JTOR/D 43560' is not ex-Brough but would have been manufactured in 1934 (finished Broughs with near numbers were ex-works in January I935). The engine is stamped 'Supplied by Fernihough Brooklands'. An old report in the Brough Club files states that the remains of the original engine ('33390') may have been with Dick Knight in the 1960s. The SS100 still has its original gearbox ('SB 192'), its original tank ('2027', detached) and its original Brough front numberplate. Modified by Dick Knight, 'EY 3601' was raced and sprinted extensively but with a 1930 SS100 engine (since reunited with its original frame) installed, and once achieved a speed of 122mph in a British National Sprint. An article about Dick Knight and his Brough Superiors was published in Superbike magazine's April 1979 edition (copy on file). The Brough later passed to Dick's son William and then, via dealer John Coleman, to the late Richard Gulvin in May 1979 (sales receipt on file). 'EY 3601' was in running order when acquired and Richard rode it in various Brough Superior Club events. In a letter on file, Richard Gulvin states that the engine came fitted with a set of Dick Knight's racing 'Brooklands' cams, reiterating: 'The engine is definitely a Fernihough Brooklands racing engine as prepared by Mr Dick Knight.' It is to be hoped that the fortunate next owner resists the temptation to restore 'EY 3601' to factory specification, as this wonderful old warhorse, which has been used competitively for most of its life, deserves to have its battle scars respected and preserved. SPL 772RFrame no. 7F00102H7Engine no. 7F00102H7Harley-Davidson had been building the Sportster for years but by the mid-1970s it had become obvious that something better would be required to compete with the hottest new road bikes from Europe and Japan. Harley's riposte was the XLCR 'Café Racer', which combined the iron-barreled Sportster engine with a chassis incorporating an XR750-style box-section swingarm, cast alloy wheels and triple disc brakes. With its matt black-finished engine cases, matching exhaust system and sleek glassfibre bodywork, the XLCR looked lean and mean. Trouble was, The XLCR still couldn't cut it with the opposition and traditional Harley owners didn't know what to make of it. Sales were disappointing and the model was dropped after only two years in production. Sonly some 3,000-or-so were made and today the rare and stylish XLCR is highly prized by collectors. The Harley-Davidson XLCR offered here was used overseas before being imported and registered in the UK in September 1990. A new speedometer has been fitted and the machine benefits from the following upgrades: drilled brake discs all round; fork brace; Harrison Billet rear brake calliper; Harley-Davidson 40mm CV carburettor; electronic ignition; Progressive shock absorbers; HEL brake hoses; chromed rear brake reservoir; oil filter; and a K&N velocity stack air filter (within the existing housing). The battery and Avon Road Runner tyres are new. The private vendor describes the machine as in generally good condition, the engine said to be 'average' for the 18,449 miles recorded. Property of a deceased's estate 1942 Harley-Davidson 750cc WLC ProjectEngine no. 42WLC279 (plus 2794 and BW106711 - see text)•Wartime Canadian-built military model•Purchased at a Ministry of Supply auction in 1947 and dismantled•Loosely assembled•Offered for restorationIntroduced in 1929 as a competitor to Indian's successful 750cc 'flat head' (sidevalve) v-twin, the Harley-Davidson Model D - better known as the '45' (its capacity in cubic inches) - really took off when the USA's entry into WW2 created an unprecedented demand for military motorcycles. Around 90,000 of the WL (military) version had rolled off the Milwaukee production lines before hostilities ceased, and the Harley '45' saw action in just about every theatre of war. De-mobbed Harleys helped meet the upsurge in demand for motorcycles in the immediate post-war years, doing much to establish the marque's reputation worldwide.This Canadian-built WLC Military Model served with the Canadian National Defence Force and was used on an air base in Oxfordshire, taking aircrew and engineers around the base, hence the very low recorded mileage of 486. On 18th July 1947 the Harley was purchased at an auction in Reading held by Simmons & Sons (who were acting for the Ministry of Supply) by RAF Flight Sergeant Martin Stevens, an aircraft mechanical engineer and motorcycle enthusiast. The purchase price was £57 10s. Flight Sergeant Stevens rode the machine straight back to his home in Buckinghamshire where he and his friend dismantled it so that they could re-spray it in non-military colours. However, they never got round to this and the bike remained in pieces in the barn (see photograph on file). Martin's family were aware of the Harley but it almost became mythical, with no one actually seeing it until after Martin's death almost 70 years later. The bike was left to his nephew, Raymond Biggs, who shared Martin's passion for motorcycles. Raymond had hoped to rebuild the bike himself but sadly it would be a project that was never completed. The machine is currently loosely bolted together and comes with its original rack, which in itself is an extremely rare item. Accompanying documentation includes the original bills of sale from Simmons & Sons Auctioneers and the Ministry of Supply, all dated 18th July 1947. Additionally, the bike comes with an original running and adjusting instruction manual.The vendor advises us that they have spoken to a well-known classic military vehicle enthusiast (who owns several of these machines) who confirms that it was normal practice to have an engine re-stamp. However, there is no documentary evidence to support this. So dark, it practically drank in the light, the Café Racer was another of Willie G Davidson's variations on an old theme, in this case reworking the basic 1,000cc Sportster which had first appeared in 1972. When it arrived for the 1977 model year, the XLCR looked revolutionary – the most unashamedly different Harley-Davidson yet.' – Mac McDiarmid, The Ultimate Harley-Davidson'. Only some 3,000-or-so were made and today the rare and stylish XLCR is highly prized by collectors. This superb example is to original and unmodified specification and has to be one of the very best currently available. Professionally maintained by Warr's Harley-Davidson, the machine has only covered an indicated 7,181 miles and was last run during the winter of 2021. Intended to compete with the sportier British parallel twins, and those offered by home-based rivals Indian, the XL Sportster was leaner and meaner than previous Harleys and boasted an all-new overhead-valve v-twin engine producing 40bhp. This new power unit went into the chassis of the Model K. Introduced in 1952, the 45ci Model K was Harley's final 'flat-head'. Almost a complete break with the past, the K had adopted ideas from Europe: unitary construction of the engine/transmission, swinging-arm rear suspension, foot operated gear change, and hand clutch, but despite better handling than its similar-sized predecessor, proved little faster. The arrival of the 883cc overhead-valve engine would change all that. Progressively improved and updated, the ever-popular Sportster remains Harley's top-selling model today. Without question the 1970 Sportster's most talked about feature was the optional extended 'boat tail' combined seat and rear fender. Predictably, given the innate conservatism of Harley's target market, the 'boat tail' did not last long and was dropped at the end of 1971. Very rare and totally original, this 'boat tail' Sportster was owned by the US Harley-Davidson dealer O'Donahue for many years before joining the Warr collection in 2013, since when it has been kept in dry storage. Re-commissioning will be required before the machine returns to the road. Almost a complete break with the past, the K adopted ideas from Europe: unitary construction of engine/transmission, swinging-arm rear suspension, foot operated gear change and hand clutch, but despite better handling than its similar-sized predecessor, proved little faster. Not so the racing KR that it inspired. Harley-Davidson had not won the prestigious Daytona Beach race since WW2, so the KR's winning debut there in 1953 was greeted with intense relief back in Milwaukee. Enlarged to 54ci (883cc) as the KH, the Model K street bike continued in the line-up until the end of 1956; the racer though, ran on successfully well into the 1960s; indeed, its final Daytona victory in 1969 was the KR's 12th at the Florida track. That year a KRTT achieved an astonishing 149mph during qualifying. An example of the ultra-rare KK variant, a hotted-up model produced for the 1953 season only, this actual machine featured as Tim Burton's ride in the motion picture I.Q. (1994) starring Meg Ryan. The Harley had already been restored when it was purchased in the USA circa 2012. Re-commissioning will be required before it returns to the road. The off-road Competition twin – complete with high-level exhaust – turned Harley critics into Harley fans reported Main-Smith.' – The Classic Motor Cycle. The XLCH Sportster had first appeared in 1958 as the competition version of the XLH ('H' for high-compression) roadster, and as such was sold without either lighting or speedometer. Ignition was by magneto (there was no battery) and the 'silencers' were devoid of baffles, while the mudguards were shortened appropriately. For 1959 the XLCH was made road legal with lights, horn and speedometer, while at the same time receiving 'hotter' cams, a 2-into-1 high-level exhaust, and rubber-mounted handlebars. The XLCH was last catalogued in 1979 when only 141 were built.This machine has been built to a similar specification as Fred Warr's XLCH sprinter as used at the Ramsgate Sprint in May 1960 (see MCN press cutting on file). BLF 393BFrame no. none visibleEngine no. 64AH2640When Harley-Davidson wanted to add a range of lightweight motorcycles to its line-up of traditional heavyweight twins, it simply went out and bought the Italian Aermacchi concern. But when it came to adding a scooter to the range, H-D eschewed the large-wheeled Aermacchi designs in favour of one of its own: the Topper, though at 12' in diameter the Topper's wheels were larger than those of many scooters. The Topper was powered by a pull-started 165cc air-cooled two-stroke engine, which drove via an 'infinitely variable' automatic transmission. Its frame was tubular and there was an Earles-type leading-link fork up front, while the slab-sided glassfibre bodywork was available in two-tone livery. Two versions were available initially: 'A' (9.5bhp) and 'AU' (5bhp), the former changing to 'AH' in 1961. Elvis Presley was one of the Topper's better known owners. Unfortunately for H-D, by the time of the Topper's arrival in 1960, the post-war scooter boom was subsiding and sales were disappointing. The Topper was last catalogued in 1965. This example of a Harley-Davidson model rarely seen in Europe was sold new by Warr's and is believed to have been in their collection since the 1960s (the affixed tax disc expired in June 1968 and the odometer reading is 15,732 miles). 1996 Harley Davidson MT350, 349cc. Registration number P871 HRM. Frame number 1HD6RLT14VY000290. Engine number 237931.The MT350 motorcycle was built in the USA starting in 1993 and was derived from the earlier Armstrong MT500 built for the British army. In 1984 Armstrong-CCM then bought the rights to the Rotax engined XN Tornado from the Milan based SWM company after they had gone into liquidation. From this they developed the Armstrong MT500 and then produced about 3,500 of the bikes for the British Army between 1984 and 1987. In 1987, after the MT500 had been adopted as the standard motorcycle for NATO, Armstrong sold the rights to Harley Davidson who took over production in the United States where they produced the Harley Davidson badged MT350 version of the motorcycle. The British Army began buying this version in 1993.The MT350 uses an electric start version of the Austrian built Rotax 348cc single cylinder, 4-valve overhead camshaft engine producing 30 bhp and 29 Nm of torque. Although slightly heavy at 162 kg for off-road use, it is a robust motorbike and is fitted with good quality Marzocchi front forks and Ohlin rear shock absorbers. The wheel rims were made by Akront, hubs and discs. bearings.The MT350 is fitted with detachable plastic pannier boxes mounted on frames either side of the engine. It is also fitted with a plastic rifle scabbard at the back on the right-hand side. This example saw service with 174 PRO COY Royal Military Police and 157 RLC-249 Sqn being retired in 2009 and sold by Witham Ltd, the military specialists.It was in a sorry state and our vendor set about a full restoration, the engine and gearbox were stripped and rebuilt, as was the carb, the frame was repainted, all bearings and seals replaced, a long list is included with the sale. The bike is now fully running and ready for green adventures. It is only being sold as another project has appeared.Sold with the V5C.

1997 Yamaha XVS 650 Drag Star, 649 cc, Registration number P625 FGM, Chassis number JYA4VR00000002784, Engine number 4VR0000677. The V Star range was introduced in 1997 as a cheaper alternative to the Harley Davidson cruisers and was available in three trim levels; the Custom XVS650, Classic XVS650A and the Silverado. The air-cooled V-twin engine pushes out maximum torque at 3000 rpm, making this reliable shaft drive cruiser a real pleasure to ride over short or long distances. What differentiates the Star models from the Virago range is their long, low chassis which emphasises the cruiser looks, and at 1610mm the middleweight Drag Star runs with one of the longest wheelbases in the class. The double cradle frame features a rigid-style rear end to give the XVS650 a clean-looking back section. Hidden beneath the rider's seat is a preload adjustable monoshock suspension system that can be easily set up to suit solo or two-up riding simple by removing the seat. More cruiser influence can be seen at the front end with the heavy duty raked front forks. In keeping with its cruiser looks the Drag Star is equipped with a classic teardrop tank, which carries a chrome plated speedometer assembly. Holding a generous 16 litres, the tank gives the Drag Star a decent range, underlining its long-distance capability. This example's previous owner, a lady from Scarborough, purchased her in 2009 and enjoyed her limited use of the bike, only some 6,200 miles in the last 5 years, the mileage today is 32,518. It was purchased by our vendor in 2016 and has been dry stored since. Sold with the V5C and old MOT details, it will need recommissioning.

1977 Harley Davidson XLCR1000, 998cc. Registration number DFC 993R. Frame number 7F01040H7. Engine number 7F01040H7.First released in 1977, the XLCR was quite a bold departure from the Harley-Davidson formula. A Sportster in café-racer clothes, it was in production for just two years and has become one of the most interesting and collectible of modern Harleys. With much input from then-new styling chief Willie G. Davidson, the short-lived XLCR (XL denoting the Sportster family, CR for Café Racer) comprised a lightweight frame and standard Sportster engine. The petrol tank and tailsection had a certain XR750 dirt-tracker feel, but stretched and streamlined, complemented by low-rise handlebars and a bikini fairing up front. Morris mag wheels and triple disc brakes were used, along with a Siamesed exhaust system in black chrome.Unfortunately the bike's sinister all-black appearance wasn't backed up by its performance, sales were slow, and production ceased in 1978 after less than 2000 examples had been manufactured, assuring its collector status.DFC was imported in 1983 and first owned by Frank Chapman of Minster Lovell, our vendor buying it in 2004 and had an MOT in 2007 at 2,410 miles, today the mileage is 2,765.Sold with the V5C and old MOT together with and owners manual. It should be noted there is a gearbox issue as it will not change gear and the clutch needs to be depressed to move it.
