The Hans Schifferle Collection 1972 Harley-Davidson FX1200 Super GlideRegistration no. not registeredFrame no. 2C10703H2Engine no. 2C10703H2•Dating from the first year of FX production•Ultra-rare one-year-only 'boat tail' model•3,712 miles since restorationFor many years Harley-Davidson's big four-stroke models had been divided into two families: the smaller Sportsters and the larger FL models. In 1971 things changed with the introduction of the FX series under the 'Super Glide' name. H-D styling supremo Willie G Davidson had long been aware of the customising movement and wanted to offer a production model capturing something of that flavour. Arguably the first ever 'factory custom', the FX was the result. In actual fact the FX was something of a 'parts bin special', incorporating the FL frame and XLH Sportster front forks and brakes, while the power unit was the 74ci (1,200cc) Shovelhead engine found in the FL range. The result was a motorcycle that weighed some 70lb (31.8kg) less than the FL and was a lot easier to handle, particularly around town. Doing without an electric starter had helped get the weight down, while a 19' front and 16' rear wheel combination gave the FX a purposeful look all of its own. Without question the FX's most talked about feature was the extended 'boat tail' combined seat and rear fender, which had been introduced the previous year as an option on the XLH Sportster. Predictably, given the innate conservatism of Harley's target market, the 'boat tail' did not last long and was dropped at the end of the year. The 1972 FX had a more conventional rear end, making the '71 a one-year-only-model and thus of considerable interest to Harley-Davidson collectors.Few surviving '71 FX Super Glides retain their 'boat tail', which makes this example exceptionally rare. The Harley was purchased in May 2016 from a Turin-based collector. Beautifully presented, it has covered a mere 3,712 miles since restoration. The machine is offered with a German Fahrzeugbrief; the 2016 purchase receipt; expired TüV (MoT) certificate/correspondence; photocopy ASI (Italian) papers; and a photocopy Nebraska title (previously registered to 'Vintage Restorations' of Omaha).Footnotes:* Import VAT Low RateImport tax at the reduced rate of 5% of the Hammer Price and Buyers Premium will apply should the lot remain in the UK.N (NOVA): This lot is subject to a fee of £125 + VAT payable by the Buyer, to undertake the relevant NOVA and C88 (Customs) clearance applications. The Hans Schifferle Collection 1987 Harley-Davidson 1,637cc Heritage Softail CustomRegistration no. not registeredFrame no. 1HD1BJL13HY010882Engine no. DKM 231068•Specially built in Germany for Hans Schifferle•Completed in 2000•2,395 kilometres since completion•Registered as manufactured in 1987An important event in the lengthy development of Harley's perennial v-twin occurred in 1984 with the introduction of the new all-alloy Evolution engine together with a diaphragm clutch, air-assisted shock absorbers, and toothed-belt final drive. By this time Harley-Davidson had freed itself from the American Machine & Foundry group, and one of the more significant developments of the immediately post-AMF era was the introduction in '84 of the traditionally styled Softail. The Softail featured a cleverly disguised rear end looking like that of a pre-war 'rigid'-framed Harley but was, in fact, sprung, as its name suggests, with the two dampers mounted beneath the frame. Completing the 'vintage' retro look was a girder-type front fork with bottom link and centre spring. This was the look the die-hard Harley traditionalists had been waiting for, and the Springer Softail and its derivatives would prove an enduring success.Testing a Heritage Softail in 1987, Bike magazine's editor Roger Willis was amazed at the effect the Harley had on people, attracting admiring glances wherever it went. He was even more surprised to discover that it actually worked. 'As a posing tool, the Heritage turned out to be utterly wonderful, but I still expected it to be utterly useless as a functional motorcycle. It was therefore a pleasant surprise to find that the fun extended beyond outrageous image projection.'If the standard offering could inspire such a reception, imagine the reaction when you turn up on something like this extensively customised Heritage Softail, which was built for Hans by a Munich based Harley-Davidson dealer at a cost of over €80,000. It features a Revtech engine incorporating S&S components and a 1987 frame exempting it from Germany's noise regulations. Other notable features include Axtel cylinder barrels; Lockhart oil cooler; Wiwo/Akront billet wheels; Wiwo swingarm; and plentiful chrome throughout. Completed and registered in 2000 (as manufactured in 1987), the machine has covered only 2,395 kilometres since completion and is presented in commensurately good condition. Accompanying documentation consists of a German Fahrzeugschein and an expired TüV (MoT) certificate and correspondence. The Hans Schifferle Collection 2003 Harley-Davidson 1,131cc V-Rod 100th Anniversary EditionRegistration no. not registeredFrame no. 5HD1HAZ183K831700Engine no. HAZ3831700•Purchased new in Germany•Many special features•Circa 4,000 kilometres from newThe futuristic looking V-Rod 'muscle bike' represented a radical departure from the norm for Harley-Davidson when it arrived in 2001. True, it was a v-twin cruiser like the American company's traditional products, but it looked like no other Harley before it. According to Car & Driver magazine, Harley-Davidson's branding was 'culturally rather than technologically driven; so imagine our surprise at seeing the company's newest ride, the V-Rod, complete with a liquid-cooled DOHC four-valve V-twin developed in partnership with Porsche Engineering'.At the V-Rod's heart was a water-cooled double-overhead-camshaft engine – H-D's first such power unit in a road bike – that was closely related to the Porsche-developed unit in the VR1000 racer. Coupled to a five-speed belt-drive transmission, the engine went into a curvaceous tubular frame that located the fuel tank beneath the seat, the 'tank' being a cover for the air box, while the front forks were raked out in true cruiser style and complemented by the de rigeur forward-mounted foot-pegs and high 'bars. Harley's newcomer was designated 'VRSC' (V-twin Racing Street Custom) and suffixed 'A' to indicate that it was the first of what would turn out to be a sizeable family of derivatives. In 2003 Harley-Davidson introduced a number of special editions to celebrate its 100th year of uninterrupted motorcycle production, though in the V-Rod's case this only amounted to little more than a subtle change to the livery from all silver to a subtle sliver-and-black combination, plus special '1903-2003' tank badges. This 100th Anniversary V-Rod was purchased new September 2003 from Bobo's Motorcycles in Munich. Special Harley-Davidson parts fitted included the swing-arm; exhaust system; shock absorbers; and chrome-plated side panels, brake reservoir, sprocket and belt rim. Costing over €30,000 new, the machine comes with a 'golden key' hand-crafted from solid brass and sterling silver. Accompanying documentation consists of a German Fahrzeugschein; expired TüV (MoT) certificate and correspondence; servicing token; 2009 service invoice; and a licensed H-D cover. The Hans Schifferle Collection 1994 Harley-Davidson 1,340cc FLHTC Electra Glide ClassicRegistration no. not registeredFrame no. 1HD1DJL13SY500661Engine no. view obstructedTwo important events in the lengthy development of Harley's perennial v-twin occurred in the mid-1960s when the 74ci (1,200cc) FH and FLH Duo-Glide adopted electric starting (1965) and the revised 'Shovelhead' engine the following year. Now known as the 'Electra Glide' - without question one of the most evocative names in motorcycling history – Harley's updated cruiser featured a new frame to house the large 12-volt battery and a reshaped primary drive cover to accommodate the electric starter mechanism. The Shovelhead 'Glide continued in production for a further 18 years before bowing out in 1983 with the arrival of the Evolution-engined 'Glide. The world's oldest surviving motorcycle manufacturer, Harley-Davidson is acutely aware of its heritage and the Electra Glide has remained a cornerstone of the range to this day. This Electra Glide Classic was purchased new in September 1994 from Bobo's Motorcycle's in Munich (32,920 DM). Much loved by Hans, the Glide is presented in TT Burgundy/Red with lashings of chrome throughout. Very well presented, it has covered 14,945 kilometres from new and would benefit from detailing. The Hans Schifferle Collection 2001 Moto Guzzi 1,064cc California EVRegistration no. not registeredFrame no. ZGUK2KDYM115706Engine no. 020478'An Italian with real history – the Moto Guzzi California 1100EV hasn't changed hugely since the 850cc version of 1972. But it's still a machine well worth considering. The California 1100EV is a cruiser/tourer that actually handles.' – Motor Cycle News.An engine design that originated in the early post-war years, Moto Guzzi's venerable 90-degree v-twin is still around today, albeit much modified and updated, powering the company's latest generation of superbikes, tourers and cruisers. Guzzi's take on the latter first appeared in the mid-1970s in the form of the 850 T3 California. The styling was unashamedly American inspired: fat 'buddy' seat, cow-horn 'bars, king-size mudguards, foot boards, panniers, screen and lashings of chrome, all of which conspired to make it look like Italy's answer to the Harley-Davidson Electra Glide. The design has changed in detail over the years, the engine growing to 1,064cc and the cycle parts being upgraded with the latest kit, but the concept remains unchanged. 'This isn't some faceless Japanese pretend cruiser, but an original,' as Bike magazine observed in 1998. This Moto Guzzi California was purchased new 15th May 2001 (for long distance touring) from Motorradsport Schmid, costing 21.700 DM before extras. Currently displaying a total of 4,747 kilometres on the odometer, the machine is offered with a 2012 servicing invoice; German Fahrzeugschein; expired TüV (MoT) certificate and correspondence; and an owner's manual.Footnotes:Ω Import VAT High RateImport tax at the higher rate of 20% of the Hammer Price and Buyers Premium will apply should the lot remain in the UK. The Hans Schifferle Collection 1956 Harley-Davidson 55ci Model KHRegistration no. not registeredFrame no. M709861701RMEngine no. 56KH2378•Harley-Davidson's last 'flat head' model•Purchased circa 2017•3,178 miles since restorationIntroduced in 1952, the 45ci (750cc) Model K effectively replaced the long-running WL that had done such sterling work during WW2 as the WLD. The Model K would turn out to be Harley's final 'flat head'. Almost a complete break with the past, the K adopted many ideas from Europe: unitary construction of engine/transmission; swinging-arm rear suspension; and foot operated gear change and hand clutch, but despite better handling than its similar-sized predecessor, proved little faster. Not so the racing KR that it inspired. Harley-Davidson had not won the prestigious Daytona Beach race since WW2, so the KR's winning debut there in 1953 was greeted with intense relief back in Milwaukee. BSA struck back the following year, but for the next seven events it would be a Harley in the winner's circle. In 1953, five AMA Class C flat track national events were won, and in 1954 KR racers won 13 of 18 races. On flat tracks the KR raced with a rigid rear end, retaining the swinging arm for circuit races such as the Daytona 200. The Model K roadster continued in the line-up until the end of 1956, from 1954 onwards as the heavily revised and much improved 55ci (900cc) KH. For the latter, almost every engine component was upgraded; the crankcase strengthened; the clutch beefed up; and the frame modified for better handling. Although the KH street bike lasted for only a couple of years, the racer ran on successfully well into the 1960s; indeed, its final Daytona victory in 1969 was the KR's 12th at the Florida track. The KH was one of the many Harley-Davidsons model types owned by Elvis Presley. Beautifully presented in Ocean Blue, this KH was purchased circa 2017 from a Turin-based collector and has covered only 3,178 miles since restoration. KHs commonly have wet-sumping problems but this example is said to have been configured correctly. Accompanying documentation consists of German registration papers; old ASI papers; expired TüV (MoT) certificate; and assorted correspondence. Property of a deceased's estate 1918 Excelsior 61ci Model 19Registration no. SV 9651Frame no. 14217Engine no. 95950 (see text)•Premier American make•An older restoration•Stylish 'Banbury' transportThe famous American Excelsior motorcycle was produced by the Excelsior Motor Manufacturing Company of Chicago, Illinois from 1907 until 1931, latterly under the 'Super-X' brand name. The first Excelsior was a belt-driven single cylinder machine, the engine of which formed part of the frame. The engine itself was an inlet-over-exhaust 'F-head', a design then much in vogue. 1911 was a landmark year in Excelsior's history, for the firm was acquired by bicycle maker Ignaz Schwinn and introduced its first v-twin model that year. In 1913 the 61ci (1,000cc) twin was offered with all-chain drive, while two-speed planetary transmission and a leaf-sprung, Indian-style front fork were two innovations introduced for the following season.Alongside rivals Harley-Davidson and Indian, Excelsior offered a three-speed countershaft transmission for 1915, simultaneously introducing a new frame with curved top tube and s smoothly rounded tank, a first for Excelsior. Deeply valanced mudguards distinguished the v-twin of 1917. 'Military' olive green was adopted as the Excelsior livery that year and would remain the only option until 1920 when blue became the norm. Offered with a fascinating history file, this nicely restored Excelsior Model 19 twin was purchased by its late owner from Christchurch Motorcycles Ltd, New Zealand on 28th February 1994 for the sum of $20,000NZ (bill of sale on file). Apparently, the Excelsior had seen service with US Navy in WWI and been left in the port city of Timaru, South Island, NZ where it was discovered in a barn (see email from the relative of a former NZ owner). The late owner bought it while on holiday and had it shipped to the UK where it was registered in 2003. There are three expired MoTs on file issued in 2003, 2004, 2005 respectively, after which the machine appears to have been SORN'd annually. The huge history file also contains old/current V5C documents; plentiful correspondence; a quantity of marque-related literature; assorted photographs; and instruction and parts books. The machine also comes with its old NZ licence plates. An imposing motorcycle from any angle, the Excelsior is finished in the correct military green livery, while notable features include a Klaxon horn and Corbin speedometer. Re-commissioning to a greater or lesser extent will be required before returning it to the road. (It appears that the engine number has been re-stamped at some time, but there is evidence of the original number still visible.)Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness, and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
