2007 Honda VFR800, 782 cc. Registration number YG07 ARO. Frame number JH2RC46A46M801030. Engine number RC46E2804981. The Honda VFR800 is a sport touring motorcycle made since 1998. The model was the successor to the VFR750F and shares the V4 engine configuration with the Honda VF and VFR series. The sixth generation VFR was introduced in 2002. It featured dual underseat exhausts, optional ABS, DCBS linked brakes, and optional hard luggage. It featured chain-driven cams rather than the gear-driven cams of earlier VFRs, and VTEC valve actuation. The VFR800 was the first non-Japanese domestic market motorcycle to use VTEC valve-gear. Honda used VTEC to meet tightening noise and emissions standards and to increase the peak engine horsepower. Based on the VTEC-E system, the simplified motorcycle version employs only two of the four valves per cylinder when operating at lower engine speeds. All four valves per cylinder are engaged above approximately 6,800 rpm. This design allows for variable valve timing as well, since the cam lobe profiles can be made different. After much criticism of the abruptness of power transition, Honda lowered the activation rpm threshold to 6,400 rpm in 2006. The VTEC disengages two cylinder valves when the engine speed drops again below 6,100 rpm. ARO was bought new by our vendor on the 1st March 2007 from Castle Motorcycles of Castleford when he part exchanged a Harley Davidson 1200 sport for it. It had its first service at 602 miles a month later. Its first MOT saw a mileage of 2,016, then 2,233, 2,412, 2,487, 2,603, 2,728, 2,971, it was SORNed in 2016 at a mileage of 3,063. Sold with the V5C, MOT history, spare key, service book and manual. This VFR is in very good condition and started instantly and rode with no issues around our storage yard. As with all machines that have been SORNed it would benefit from some light recommissioning before taking it on the road.

Lot 1059

1976 Harley - Davidson SS250, 250 cc. Registration number not registered. Frame number 9E12091H6. Engine number 9E12091H6. Harley Davidson's attempts to capture a share of the world's market for lightweight and mid-size two stroke bikes was somewhat doomed from the start due to the impending, if not foreseen, influence of the environmentalists, who even today would be glad to see the back of the 2-stroke. The average well used Asian concrete mixer probably puts out more pollutants than all the Harley strokers ever made, but H-D got the message eventually and by 1978 none were listed in the catalogue. The largest 2 stroke offered previous to this was a 250cc version similar to the 1976 machine pictured here. So rare that the model is not even referred to in the official H-D archive on the writer's bookshelves, but the ubiquitous Internet does recognise the model, which appears to be a Yamaha inspired design. These lightweight Harleys were built by the Aermacchi factory in Italy under license with HD from the early 196's until the late 1970's. This example was sold by DK Motorcycles of Newcastle under Lyme to Paul Tonge of Barnsley in March 2016 as a trade sale who purchased a new wiring loom from the USA. Our vendor bought it in February 2019 an apparently restored condition. Sold with a NOVA document, an owner’s manual and various other paperwork, this rare machine will require some recommissioning.

Lot 12

Lot 169

c. 1964 Aermacchi Harley - Davidson Ala Verde, 250cc. Registration number not registered, NOVA reference 16P754008. Frame number 64 H 2558. Engine number 2558. A household name among motorcyclists thanks to its heroic achievement of producing the most highly developed and successful overhead-valve racing single ever, Aermacchi was a relative latecomer to motorcycle manufacture, building its first machine, the curious scooter-like Convertible, in the late 1940s. Aermacchi's first 'proper' motorcycle, the two-stroke Monsone, appeared in 1950, but it was not until 1956 that the firm's trademark horizontally mounted four-stroke single made its debut in the Chimera. Before then it had been joined by a quartet of more conventionally styled machines in 175cc and 250cc capacities, the sporting version of the '250' being the 80mph Ala Verde. The racing versions were christened 'Ala d'Oro' (Golden Wing). Alberto Pagani's 9th place on the 250's Dutch TT debut in 1960 demonstrated the racer's potential, which was confirmed the following week when Pagani finished 5th at the Belgian Grand Prix. That same year an unlikely alliance between the Aermacchi concern and Harley-Davidson resulted in the former's lightweight motorcycles being sold in the USA alongside H-D's traditional big v-twins. Marketed as Harley-Davidsons in the USA and as Aermacchi Harley-Davidsons elsewhere. The latter remained in the Harley range until the end of the 1974 model year, falling sales forcing their discontinuation. Purchased as a project in 2013, the engine has been overhauled but not assembled, and a new exhaust system acquired from Italy. Sold with the NOVA certificate, various receipts for parts and manuals, prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves of the completeness of this project.
