Joseph Medley of Boston. A George II chinoiserie and lacquer longcase clock, with caddy top and moulded pillared hood, having urn and flame gilt finial, full length trunk door decorated with birds, peonies, oriental buildings, seated figures, the base embellished with a hunting scene, on a plinth with bracket feet, the 30cm square arch dial having applied cast gilt brass amorini mask spandrels and dolphin enclosures to the arch, with a convex silvered maker's tablet for Jos.Medley, Bofton, Fecit, Roman hour with fleur de lis dividers and Arabic minute numerals to the silvered chapter ring, the matted centre chased with birds and having a silvered seconds ring and date aperture, 8-day five pillar movement striking a bell, 258cm H.Joseph Medley is recorded as working from 1727 p.65 in Lincolnshire Clock, Watch and Barometer Makers by Wilbourn & Ellis, with further references in Appendix III, Wills & Inventories.
A Japanese Meiji period ivory and Shibayama miniature kodansu, of rectangular section carved with panels of figures, with white metal carrying handle and hinged door, opening to reveal three graduated drawers inlaid with a bird, insects and blossom in hardstone and mother of pearl, raised on a plinth base, unsigned, 13cm H, 11cm W, 13cm D.
A group of appearing European carved ivory figures to include; goddess with flowers and cherub on socle base (overall 32cm high approx) ,figures of two street musicians and another also on ebonised socle bases. Individually 12cm high plus bases approx (possibly Dieppe). (4)(B.P. 24% incl. VAT) CONDITION REPORT: Significant damage particularly to the goddess figure who has been broken off at her ankles. Other figures are badly stained with losses, cracks and missing pieces.
Four Chinese Ming Dynasty Pottery Tomb Figures. 28cm tall. Removeable heads Slight damage to one head. (4) Provenance: Collected by Michael and Judith Hanson, Hong Kong, 1987-1996. The Hansons worked in Hong Kong in the years before the handover to China, Judith as an academic and a solicitor and Michael as a government official, whose jobs included Refugee coordinator at the height of the Vietnamese boat people crisis and Information coordinator and Government Spokesman for Chris Patten, the last governor of Hong Kong.
A 19th century Chinese carved circular jade plaque pierced and carved with figures and flowers with wooden stand together with an earlier circular jade plaque pierced and carved with bat and dragon heads. 7.5cm diameter and 5cm diameter. (2) Purchased between 1972-74 - valued by Phillips valuers 1986. Private collection until now.
