French School, 18th c - Portrait of Marie Thérèse de Larlan de Kercadio, Comtesse de Rochefort (née de Brancas; 1716-1782), full-length, titled, attributed to de Saint-Aubin to verso, pencil and bodycolour, 38.5 x 24.5cm  A close friend to Madame du Deffand, the Comtesse was one of the great figures of the Parisian Enlightenment salons of the 18th century. Having been widowed very early on, she became the close friend of the Duc de Nivernais, whom she ended up marrying at the end of her life in 1782. It was said of the Duc de Nivernais that he had been for forty years her friend and forty days her husband. The sheet with some foxed portions. The later gilt frame with some losses and repairs.

Black lacquered saya with gold kiri flowers and tendrils.Iron Kozuka with gilt bamboo with signed ko-gatana.Provenance: purchased in a local UK antique shop 1958. Lots 992 - 1009 comprise a collection of Japanese edged weapons assembled by the late Mr MacCormick between 1953 and 1963, with one final addition added in 1998. They were all purchased within the UK at local auctions, antique shops or privately. They have never been submitted for shinsa. Within the Collection there is a Daisho (large and small swords) and a good Gendaito from the Showa period.  All of the works are in largely untouched condition and a professional polish would undoubtedly reveal more detail of hada, hamon and boshi. Equally the koshirae include a number of interesting tsuba and small fittings which are worthy of further study and preservation.  Mellors & Kirk gratefully acknowledge the assistance of Paul Bowman in the cataloguing of this collection
