If the centrepiece was intended for the display of sweetmeats, these were likely made from sugar flowing into England from the Americas and 'evokes the inextricable relationship between sugar production and black slave labour'.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A Royal Worcester model of HRH Princess Elizabeth riding 'Tommy', circa 1950 Modelled by Doris Lindner, the Princess wearing the uniform of Colonel-in-Chief of the Grenadier Guards, mounted side-saddle, her reins and baton gathered in one hand, on an ebonised wooden plinth, 31.5cm high excluding plinth, printed marks in gold, modeller's name and title, edition number partially erased (2) Footnotes: Produced as a Limited Edition of just 100 models, numbers 1 and 2 were presented to the then Princess Elizabeth and her mother, Queen Elizabeth. The young Princess had captured the nation's heart when she stood in for her father at the Trooping of the Colour in honour of the King's birthday on 12 June 1947. This became the most sought after of the equestrian figures produced by Royal Worcester, particularly so as post-war restrictions at the time meant rich ornamental pieces could only be sold for export and most were shipped to Commonwealth countries. The complete process of manufacturing was recorded in a film made in 1950. 'The Doctor Ordered Clay' showed Doris Linder creating the original model, Bob Bradley cutting the sculpture into pieces for mould-making, and Harry Davis painting the Princess's face and uniform. Harry recalled his anxiety when he visited Buckingham Palace to study the colouring of her hair and uniform, and how the young princess chatted with him and put him at ease. The following year, when the Princess visited Royal Worcester to open the new museum, she particularly asked to meet Harry Davis again and asked him to conduct her around the factory. She watched Bob Bradley assemble one of the figures from multiple moulded parts and hoped that he would be able to put her back together again in the right order. Not long afterwards, in 1952, Harry Davis was awarded the British Empire Medal for his services to China Painting. A similar model was sold by Bonhams on 10 June 2003, lot 269, together with an original plaster maquette for the model, lot 276. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

See Rosalie Wise Sharpe, Ceramics, Ethics and Scandal (2002), p.87. A similar group titled 'Perswaition' is illustrated by Myrna Schkolne, People, Passions, Pastimes and Pleasures (2006), p.64, who suggests that the inspiration is more likely to be a print titled 'Persuasion', published in 1809.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A Bohemian amber-stained goblet and crown cover, circa 1840-50 The barrel-shaped bowl cut with eight broad panels, engraved with a continuous tree-lined landscape scene depicting two figures of sportsmen with their dogs, one holding his horse by the reins, the other about to take aim at a flock of game birds with his shotgun, a group of three deer including two stags to the reverse, raised on a stepped octagonal base and spreading foot deeply scalloped at the rim and with a fancy star-cut underside, the cover unusually formed as a coronet or crown with an orb finial, each panel engraved with a landscape vignette depicting a single stag or hound, 41cm high (2) Footnotes: According to Michael Kovacek, Glass of Five Centuries (1990), p.188, crown-shaped covers were a speciality of the Harrachov glassworks. An almost identical goblet and cover, engraved with a different hunting scene, was sold by Bonhams on 11 December 2013, lot 35. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

This extraordinary centrepiece is recorded in the Minton factory shape book under design number 159, where it is described as a 'Large Table Ornament'. An English delftware Popish Plot tile, circa 1680-1700Painted in manganese with 'The Consult at Wild House', two monks wearing habits standing at a table in discussion with two seated men, one in Jesuit robes, the other probably Edward Coleman, 12.8cm squareFootnotes:ProvenanceFelton House, North SomersetThe Eight of Diamonds playing card is the source for this tile. During the trial of Edward Coleman on 27 November 1678, Titus Oates spoke of a number of Jesuit meetings or 'consults' having occurred in April and May of that year where the plot was discussed. According to Oates, he witnessed Coleman at one such meeting at Wild House near the Strand and here he gave his approval to the regicidal plot.Wild (or Weld) House was a significant mansion and gardens owned by the recusant lawyer and MP Humfrey Weld. Oates reported that he had attended mass with him at Wild House and that Weld had then received a dispensation from the general of the Jesuits to 'take the oaths and the Test', so that he might defend Catholic interests in Parliament. Weld vehemently denied these accusations. The fact that a portion of Wild House was sublet to the Spanish ambassador did not help dispel rumours of it being a hotbed for popish treachery. The scene has been simplified slightly in its translation from playing card to tile. On the card, two further figures, probably another monk and a second Jesuit gather around the table. The Felton House Tiles: Important English delftware tiles depicting the Popish Plot, circa 1680-1700The 'discovery' of the Popish Plot in the autumn of 1678 and the subsequent trials, political upheaval and mass hysteria that erupted in England, reads like a modern-day soap opera. The supposed Catholic conspiracy to assassinate King Charles II, replace him with his papist brother James, Duke of York, and overthrow the Protestant establishment turned out to be the invention of a disreputable priest named Titus Oates, whose many lies and inventions appealed to the anti-Catholic sentiment of the time. Oates was eventually convicted of perjury, but not before over a dozen innocent men were executed and others imprisoned, as the flames of anti-Catholic hatred and suspicion were fanned throughout the country.A set of playing cards depicting various scenes from the plot, printed from engravings by Francis Barlow, was first advertised in the newspaper True Domestick Intelligence in December 1679. A complete set of these Popish Plot playing cards is in the British Museum (inv. no.1896,0501.915.1-52). These designs were subsequently copied onto some of the earliest delftware tiles produced in England. The timing of the plot coincides with a warrant granted to the Dutch potter, Jan Ariens van Hamme, who had come to London'to exercise his trade and calling of making Tiles...after the way practised in Holland...whichhath not been practised in this our kingdome'.Several distinct versions of Popish Plot tiles were produced. One of these is painted in blue and the scenes are reserved in circular panels. These blue and white tiles have corner motifs and include inscriptions copied directly from the playing cards. See Frank Britton, London Delftware (1987), p.176 where three such tiles are illustrated. Anthony Ray suggests that these blue painted tiles were probably made at Vauxhall by van Hamme, who died in 1680, see English Delftware Tiles (1973), p.35. When found in manganese, each scene fills the available space save for a rectangular reserve at the bottom of each tile. An extremely rare set of twenty-one manganese Popish Plot tiles, matching the Felton House Tiles, was sold by Sotheby's on 15 March 1971, lot 21. A single tile depicting 'The Consult at Somerset House' was sold by Bonhams on 21 May 2014, lot 21. It has been suggested that the manganese examples were made a few years after their blue counterparts. However, the discovery of the Felton House Tiles adds weight to the argument that these were produced much closer to 1680, whilst the satirical playing cards were still topical. Indeed, close examination of the tiles show that they were copied from a deck of the Popish Plot playing cards and not from the blue and white versions.Felton House in North Somerset is a late 17th century house, confirmed by a date stone for 1684. Recent restoration of the building involved the removal of a mid-18th century fireplace which revealed an earlier fireplace behind, retaining the remains of other Popish Plot tiles from this set. The seven tiles included in this sale were removed from the fireplace in the 1950s and were recently discovered tucked away in a box. Presumably they were installed around 1684 - the date inscribed on the datestone - when the furore of the plot was still fresh in the country's consciousness. King Charles II died just a year later and the fear upon which the fictitious plot was based came to be realised; Charles II was succeeded by his brother who became king James II of England and James VI of Scotland, a Catholic monarch. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Pair of Bow figures of Liberty and Matrimony, circa 1762-65Both modelled standing, she wearing a purple bodice and floral skirt, holding a birdcage under her right arm, he wearing a pink frock coat and floral breeches, holding a nest of birds in his right hand, a further nest of three spotted eggs at his feet, the bases applied with leaves and flowers, 18.1cm and 18.4cm high (2)Footnotes:A version of the female figure is illustrated by Peter Bradshaw, Bow Porcelain Figures (1992), p.151, pl.156.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
A rare pair of Derby figures emblematic of Earth and Fire, circa 1770-75From a set of The Four Elements, both standing before colourful bocage, Earth modelled as a gardener, a posy of flowers raised in his left hand, holding a spade in his right and with a watering can at his feet, Fire standing beside a flaming urn with a small cannon at his feet, both wearing brightly coloured costumes including floral tunics, the scrolled bases applied with flowers and picked out in turquoise and gold, 22.7cm and 23.1cm high, patch marks (2)Footnotes:A complete set of these rare figures is illustrated by Peter Bradshaw, Derby Porcelain Figures (1990), p.139, fig.121, no.F17. The figure of Fire is adapted from a figure emblematic of War.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A rare Worcester teabowl, circa 1756, and its prototype Chinese saucer, Yongzheng, circa 1723-35Thinly potted and finely painted in famille rose style with an extensive mountainous Chinese river landscape, a bridge linking to a fenced compound containing a kiln-like structure, two figures in the foreground, one on horseback and the other on foot carrying packages slung from a rod across his shoulders, huts on high stilts behind them, a figure in a sampan and pagodas in the distance, the inner rim with a puce diaper border reserved with panels of gilt florets, 8cm high, the saucer delicately enamelled with an identical scene in Yongzheng painterly taste, 11.6cm diam (2)Footnotes:Many Worcester patterns of this period were adapted from Chinese originals. The design of the teabowl in the present lot is exceptional in its use of depth and perspective, closely following that of the Chinese saucer, suggesting that it could have been made as a replacement or matching for an earlier Chinese tea service. Another Worcester teabowl combined with a Chinese saucer in this pattern from the H Rissick Marshall Collection is in the Ashmolean Museum and a Worcester teapot is in the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv. no.C.74-1946). A Worcester bowl in this pattern from the Ralph Kenber Collection was sold by Bonhams on 15 December 2020, lot 159.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The Vauxhall figure modeller Thomas Hammersley was later employed by William Cookworthy at Plymouth and also Bristol and it seems likely that he is responsible for these models. See Roger Massey, Vauxhall and Plymouth Figures A Connection: Thomas Hammersley, ECC Trans, Vol.16, Pt.1 (1996), p.68-9. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821). A white damask linen napkin with crowned 'N': feint black ink stamp to one corner and inscribed in black ink 'Mr Copeland' and the number '2', 82 x 99cm., together with a small section of wall paper with manuscript inscription in black ink' From the room where The Emperor Louis Napoleon was confined at Helena', 4 x 11cm, together with one other damask linen napkin and a rubbing of Napoleon's crest reputedly taken from a silver box, inscribed 'Rubbing of Napoleon's crest on the silver provision box taken in Jan 1985, when it was left to Mrs Pauline Dover by J Alvis'*Notes- A manuscript letter accompanying these items states the following:'This napkin was taken from Napoleon's coach after the Battle of Waterloo. Among other napkins it formed part of a picnic set which also consisted of a set of silver boxes of different sizes. The gentleman who bought the coach and its contents- (some such name as Bullock) presented my Great Grandfather Dr James Copeland FRS with one of these boxes and several napkins. The box is now in the possession of my brother....it is about six inches high, nine inches long and three to four inches wide with small handles at each end, the lid has Napoleon's Coat of Arms engraved on the top and is not hinged but lifts off completely. The coach and contents was eventually bought by Mme Tussauds and was on show in front of the figures portraying the French nobility. My aunt Mrs M S Burnett (nee Copeland) offered the box to complete the set sometime in the 20s but Mme Tussaud's said 'it would not encourage anymore visitors and refused it. In the fire of 1925 the coach was destroyed and only a shaft remains. Signed Michael Alvis' (no date). The envelope containing the section of wallpaper inscribed 'Wallpaper from the room in which The Emperor Louis Napoleon was confined on St. Helena. He died in May 1821 reputedly by arsenic poisoning contained in the wall paper. This fragment may have come from the same source as the two Napoleon napkins. These were part of a picnic set captured with his carriage after Waterloo. the picnic set was presented to Dr James Copeland by a friend, thought to be Mr Bullock.
