PATTY TOWNSEND-JOHNSON (act. c. 1880-1907); a late 19th century watercolour of figures on a beach (probably Berck-sur Mer, France) at low tide with nets and boats beyond them, signed and dated 1898 lower right, framed and glazed (later) (image size 27.5cm x 79cm) Patty Townsend-Johnson was born in Coventry and exhibited widely during her career including the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists, Grosvenor Gallery and the Society of Women Artists; she became a member of the Society of Women Artists in 1893

A pair of heavy verdigrised bronze bookends modelled as figures restraining Shire horses; each on variegated green-marble base (modern) (16.5cm wide x 12.5cm high)Condition Report: in the Auctioneer's opinion these are very high quality pieces of very heavy patinated bronze with marble bases in the Art Deco tradition and the 1930s. These items of fine quality are reproductions. The undersides of the marble bases are lined with bright green baize and have either been replaced or they are the original. Very good condition.

Six varying sized hand-decorated Staffordshire figure models of Napoleon (the tallest (with hole to green rockwork in front) 21cm)Condition Report: The tallest figure with his right leg on rock work there is a small 1cm firing crack to underside of foot and small hole in rockwork base and item in his hand has been broken at the top. The 2nd tallest has two hairline cracks has two hairlines to the right-hand side of the support (6cm and 4cm long) visible, also a small firing crack to the inside. The 3rd tallest figure has some discolouration and has a collector's paper label to the inside 'Dr S J Howard' - it is noted that this is en-suite to one of the other figures in the lot (which is Wellington rather than Napoleon) these make a pair and both have these labels. The Wellington figure also has some discolouration at the base. The figure with the lot number attached appears in good order although the underside of the base exhibits a hole which may (but probably not) have been there during the manufacture. The smallest figure although dirty appears in good general condition.

James Hardy Jr. (1801-1889) The Anglers Signed, pencil and watercolour heightened with white, together with a further companion example by the same hand depicting a horse, cart and figures, 17.5cm by 27.5cm (2) See illustration each in broadly good clean and bright state of preservation. example featuring the anglers has a small slightly discoloured patch immediately above the central standing firgures head approx 1cm from top edge and a further slightly discoloured patch to upper right hand corner approx 1cm from upper edge. these may have been retouched (?) light surface dirt. there is a cluster of marks or scratches or paper being revealed underneath in and around standing figure to background an to the sky which may or may not be original to the execution of the picture. small cluster of nics or indentations to surface of upper left hand corner some light surface dirt. example with horse cart subtle cockelling to sheet colours good and bright. not examined out of frame

After Sir Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641) Portrait of Queen Henrietta Maria and child, full length, seated, wearing a brown silk dress holding a child, a dog seated to the left Oil on canvas, 125cm by 100cm Provenance: Marquess of Downshire, Easthampstead Park by descent. See illustration. Frame: Carved wood gesso and gilt frame with significant worm holes and various losses (AF) . Notable warping to stretcher effectively bowing in convex fashion. the original canvas , therefore is adrift and worn at several points. reline of some age which has been painted and adds an additional to stiffening aspect to the overall canvas and surface. Covered in a thick layer of dirt and discoloured varnish, bringing a chalky quality particularly to the edges and areas of the varnish appearing opaque in nature around the chair and edges of the figures. The surface has numerous scratches and abrasions some of which have been restored with associated retouching. corners with retouching clearly visible with the naked eye. there is a patch of effectively three linear marks of retouching towards upper left hand corner and approx 7-8cm full length. some general overpainting and in filing to edges or a significant date and throughout background to a degree. further overpainting an strengthening of a likely date throughout the ochre colour of Henrietta's dress and drapery in general. it is likely that the canvas has been in a damp environment resulting in the general state of the canvas, several patches of lifting/craquelure especially throughout the back ground of the right hand side. evident missing areas of flaked paint and also evident areas of deteriated overpainting and restoration, numerous surface scratches and abbrasions. sold AF
