ARMENDARIZ PEDRO: (1912-1963) Mexican-American film actor, famous for his portrayal of Kerim Bey in the James Bond film From Russia with Love (1963). T.L.S., Pedro Armendariz, two pages (separate leaves), 4to, Mexico, 17th June 1946, to Mary Pickford. The actor refers to a wire which he has received from Pickford (‘which confirms what you told me at Pickfair’) and adds that he is not currently in a position to fly to her home and inform her personally of the latest developments for his filming in Mexico, continuing ‘Emilio Fernandez has been working harder than ever in writing me the best part that it is in him to write for me, for a film he is to direct shortly. I am to play opposite Maria Felix and Emilio himself is to direct. I have just read the script. Without optimism or over-enthusiasm I can say quite fairly that the part written for me is not only the best but the ideal vehicle for me. After your genteel handling of our contractual relations and your personal kindness towards me, it almost embarrasses me to ask you a big favor upon your first summons to work on a concrete job for you. But the fact is that there can be no question that the part Emilio offers me in this picture, scheduled to begin the first week in July, is the best professional opportunity I have ever had here. Not the least of the inducements to me is the salary offered. Therefore…..I ask you to permit me to do this picture here if you can humanly see your way clear to it. Needless to say, Miss Pickford, I am not only prepared but eager to do whatever is in my power to make my request least cumbersome: I shall be glad to extend our agreement for whatever time you deem necessary’. A letter of good association. Two file holes to the top edge of each page (a few small tears) and some slight areas of discoloration lightly affecting some of the text to the first page. Together with a selection of vintage unsigned 8 x 10 photographs and smaller etc. of Armendariz and Pickford both together and alone, a few of the images depicting them alongside other individuals including Hunt Stromberg ahead of Armendariz’s proposed appearance in Dishonoured Lady, some ephemera including a telegram from Armendariz to Pickford and typed lists of proposed guests invited to a cocktail party in honour of Armendariz and hosted by Pickford on 10th March 1945. G to VG, Sml Qty.Mary Pickford (1892-1979) Canadian actress, film producer, screenwriter and film studio founder, Academy Award winner. The film to which Armendariz refers to is the Mexican drama film Enamorada (1946) in which he starred in the role of General Juan Jose Reyes opposite Maria Felix who portrayed Beatriz Penafiel.
