A SILVER 'BONE' CUFF BANGLE, BY ELSA PERETTI FOR TIFFANY & CO., the moulded bracelet mimicking the contours of the wrist, in silver, signed Peretti & Tiffany & Co., diameter of interior approx. 5.3cmFlirting dangerously with the line between devastating diva and shrewd businesswoman, Elsa Peretti alighted on New York fashion in the late 1960s. Initially sporting a black eye from a boyfriend soon forgotten, Peretti’s confidence quickly caught the eye of Roy Halston Frowick and she worked predominantly with him from the 70s onwards. She became immersed in a cocktail of creative personalities, often seen alongside celebrities such as Andy Warhol, Calvin Klein and Mick and Bianca Jagger. Peretti started her career in jewellery by debuting her first design in 1969 at a Giorgio di Sant’Angelo show. She then created several pieces for Halston before he introduced her to Tiffany. Peretti’s contract was finalised in 1974 and, within just six years, she was recognised as Tiffany’s leading designer, later being accredited with generating 10% of the company’s annual sales. Peretti’s use of silver revolutionised the industry as, at the time, it was not synonymous with high jewellery. She made her designs affordable for women, her work encouraging an investment in women by women – no longer was jewellery reserved as a gift from an admiring male. Instantly recognisable as one of Peretti’s most famed pieces, the bone cuff was initially inspired by her childhood memories of Rome, when she used to explore the catacombs of a Capuchin monastery. Manipulating the metal, Peretti’s design flows over the wrist, highlighting the anatomical structure below. The cuff works with the body, drawing its beauty directly from it and celebrating one of the simplest shapes of the human form. Elsa Peretti passed away in March 2021 but her timeless designs continue to be sold by Tiffany, allowing her to leave behind a legacy of creation to inspire women for years to come.
