A Silver-Plated Cocktail-Shaker, by Mappin and Webb, 20th Century, After a Design by Keith Murray, tapering form with reeded decoration and stepped cover and shoulder, 25cm high Keith Murray was born in New Zealand in 1892, moving with his family to the UK in 1906. He initially trained as an architect and became an associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1921. The depression of 1929 led him to seek opportunities as a designer instead, first glass and, by 1934, silver for Mappin and Webb. He also produced designs for Wedgwood and, on returning to work as an architect designed their new factory in Barlaston.

HARDY AMIES LTD. - BY ROYAL APPOINTMENT: a collection of three duplicate order books, 9th July 1951 - 7th May 1979, for Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth, Clarence House, St. James's, S.W, her title changing in the order book entry for 27th February, 1952 to Her Majesty the Queen, Buckingham Palace, S.W.1, from the bespoke fashion house, Hardy Amies Ltd.,14 Savile Row, London, a total of approx. 290 pages of entries, including an 'Alterations' docket book, the two order books commencing 9th July, 1951, record individual designs for cocktail, evening, and day dresses, jackets, coats, and suits, fabrics to be used, embroidery, diamante, pearl or beading additions, the prices in guineas (inclusive or exclusive of tax), and specific outfits for royal tours including Netherlands Tour 1958, Canadian Tours, 1951 / 1959, and Indian Tour, 1961, each order with the signatures of 'Miss Beard' (Maude Beard, dress fitter to H.R.H.), 'Leonard' (Mr. Leonard, tailor to H.R.H.) and 'Betty (saleswoman in charge of H.R.H. clothes), entries include '21st January 1959, Evening Dress as sketch, in primroses satin, embroidered pearls in diamante', '27th October 1960, Small Talk Dress as sketch, in Turquoise patterned blue silk organza', the 'Alterations' duplicate docket book, approx. 99pp, 9th March 1971 - 7th May 1979, (some entries very faint, and difficult to read), includes approx. 36 entries for another Hardy Amies client, Lady Delamere, instructions for alterations made on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen include 'new organza sleeves', 'to be lengthened', 'neckline to be adjusted' and '6 pairs of white gloves'; the dockets made out from the workrooms of Miss Lillian, Miss Beard, Mr. Michael, Mr. Ernest and Vendeuse, Mrs. Ogden; Challenge pen carbon duplicate books, limp blue, marbled wrappers, Hardy Amies Ltd. buff coloured printed labels, and further handwritten in blue ink 'Her Majesty The Queen', the earliest book label has Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth scratched out, overwritten with 'Her Majesty The Queen'; * Sir Edwin 'Hardy Amies', KCVO, receiving the royal warrant as official dressmaker in 1955, a comprehensive archive of the royal wardrobe, spanning the years of association between a young Princess, a newly crowned Queen, and her couturier.
