"Nightingale (Florence, 1820-1910). Autograph Letter Initialled ('F.N.'), Hampstead, 9th October [18]63, to 'Dearest', a four-point letter of reply in ink about various doctors, etc., first saying to write to Dr Williams to recommend one; the second to say she has made private enquiries at the Army Medical Department, 'The fact is, nearly half all the Half Pay List are ""blackguards"" - & I was afraid they would put you off with one. The two following you may depend upon as being respectable men, & with knowledge of the East...', naming Deputy Inspector General Hen. Pilleau and Arthur Wood M.D., School of Musketry, but admitting 'I know neither: I wish I did. For a man may be perfectly respectable & make himself thoroughly disagreeable', then describing Pilleau's character before advising that 'I would not take a man without seeing him - A ""gentleman"" may still be obnoxious', concluding this point with contact details for both men; the third point telling that Dr [John] Meyer now has charge of Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum [newly opened in 1863] and would not be able to leave; the final point to say that Sir James Clark recommends a very good medical man but who has never been to Egypt before, 5 pages with black borders, 8vo (1)"
"Whymper (Edward). Scrambles Amongst the Alps in the Years 1860-69, 1st ed., 1871, b&w wood eng. plts. and illusts., five folding maps at rear, orig. green cloth, gilt dec. spine, a little rubbed, hinges restrengthened (endpapers renewed), 8vo, contained in modern purpose-made baize-lined half dark blue morocco bookbox with gilt dec. spine Ex libris Rev. Arthur Carr, the mountaineer, with an autograph letter from Lord Francis Douglas to Arthur Carr, dated May 25th, 1865, loosely inserted. Lord Francis Douglas fell to his death on July 14th, 1865, during the first ascent of the Matterhorn by Edward Whymper and his party, the most famous alpine disaster of its time and described in full by Whymper in this volume, pp. 384-408. Douglas's letter declines an invitation from Carr, and indicates that he plans to go to Switzerland 'for the month of June or else the month of August, but as yet I have not decided'. Also included are eight loose related photographs, probably early 20th c., including five snaps of alpine scenery, and three photographs of a climbing party, stamped to verso Photo-Suisse Grindelwald, and a watercolour view of Ryffel Horn, with the Matterhorn in the distance, probably early 20th c., signed with initials C.E.H., approx. 14 x 21 cm (8.25 x 5.5 in). * HMS Bounty. Two original sheathing nails and a fragment of copper bottom from the HMS Bounty, c. 1787, each nail with an iron core and brass outer covering, both slightly bent and with traces of corrosion, white sediment on the longer nail, approx. 37 & 31 mm, the copper fragment approx. 85 x 50 mm and 1 mm thick, all decoratively mounted beneath a modern colour reproduction print showing Fletcher Christian and the Mutiny of the Bounty, the whole framed and glazed, together with two related Autograph Letters Signed from Fred Christian to Arthur Bradbury, Pitcairn Island, 14th August 1958 & 30th January 1959, the first on Shaw Savill Line letterhead, thanking Bradbury for his letter and continuing 'I am very sorry that I am not able to ge[t] you any of the wood from the Bounty but I am sending you two of the copper nails which I am sure that is the nails from the Bounty, my son Thomas Christian, get it right from the wreck of the Bounty when Mr [Luis] Marden was here little over a year ago. he help him when he was here, he live with us in our own home, he dive with Mr Marden to get what they can get from the old Bounty. you can rest assured that these two copper nail come direct from the Bounty', and as a signed postscript, 'This little peice of copper also comes from the Bounty', 2 pages, 4to, with two addressed envelopes and the original postmarked (date indistinct) brown paper package; the second letter on RMS Rangitiki letterhead thanking Bradbury 'for that beautiful picture of the Bounty you made for me it was so beautifuly done', continuing with worries about the world, wondering if Bradbury is married and noting his own family details, 'My wife is Flora Christian, and we have a son Tom Christian, he our wireless operator on the island... we also have our little grand daughter Olive', and hoping that they will meet one day, 2 pages on two leaves, 8vo, plus orig. postmarked (30th January 1959) envelope.

A Royal Ivory 'Sunset Ware' vase, of tapering form with inverted rim, decorated with flowers, 20.5cm high; an Arthur Wood jug decorated with bold pansies, 20.5cm high; and a Myott, Son & Co., vase of tapering form with spreading foot and two supports, decorated in browns and oranges, 18cm high (3)
Punch. Punch or the London Charivari, vol. 1, July to December 1841, wood eng. illusts. throughout, some closed tears and crude sellotape repairs to first few leaves, some spotting throughout and some leaves sprung, a.e.g., orig. pimpled cloth gilt, worn, 4to. Laid in the front of the volume is an albumen print [by London Stereoscopic Company, 11th May 1867], of the Green Room, group portrait of thirteen sitters including Sir Arthur Sullivan, Sir John Tenniel, Ellen Terry, George Du Maurier, Mark Lemon (editor of Punch), Quintin Twiss and others, approx. 17 x 23 cm with arched top. On the following blank endpapers are a presentation inscription from the proprietors of Punch, 'presented to John Knowles Esq. on the occasion of the amateur performance in Manchester in aid of the "Bennett Fund", 29th July 1867', signed by W. H. Bradbury, F. W. Evans, and William, Thomas and J. Agnew. On the facing leaf underneath a small ink sketch of Mr. Punch and his dog [by John Tenniel?] are twenty signatures of those involved including Mark Lemon, Tom Taylor, John Tenniel, Henry Silver, F. C. Burnand, Arthur S. Sullivan, Charles S. Keene, Kate Terry and others. Another copy of the photograph is held by the National Portrait Gallery. (1)
