Circle of Sir Peter Lely (1618 - 1680) oil on canvas - Portrait of Susanna, Lady Dormer and her Children, William and Susanna The children full length, holding an oval portrait of their mother inscribed on two pieces of cut canvas attached to the reverse: These are the Pictures of Susanna Lady Dormer. / (Wife of Sir John Dormer Kt and Bart) / She dyed the 24 day of February 1672 being aged 35 yeares, / And of thire children William and Susanna, she being aged / five yeares and he four yeares the 10th day of September Anno Dni. / 1673 when these pictures were drawn ~ P:Lely. 125 x 100cm. In good period carved silvered wood frame. N.B. Susanna Dormer was the daughter of Sir Richard Brawne of Allscott in Preston, Co Gloucester, and his wife, Theodosia. She married Sir John Dormer, Bt., the son of John Dormer and his wife, Katharine. She died at Richmond in 1672 and her two children, William and Susanna, hold a portrait of their recently deceased mother. William succeeded to the baronetcy and studied at Trinity College, Oxford. Provenance: Said to have come from Catesby Abbey, Northamptonshire; Bought in 1862 for £35 from Mr Redfern; Arthur Duckworth, his sale, Orchardleigh Park, Christie's, 21st-22nd September 1987, lot 213, sold for £14,300
