Wood of Stalag XB 31, Germany, which shows as received on 17/10/41. As purchased by the vendor's grandfather shortly after the war. A rare, if not unique piece of WWII history. From the collection of the late Arthur Muggeridge - Arthur T. Muggeridge, born 18th December 1919 - it’s thought he spent most of WW2 in the Royal Artillery and was at Dunkirk in 1940 during the evacuations and was minorly injured by Luftwaffe bombing whilst on one of the navy ships. He later took part in a special raid called Operation Claymore 4th March 1941 in Norway where he was injured once again in the leg by shrapnel. Later again, he was injured a third time when a field artillery gun misfired causing deafness which is believed to have resulted in him being discharged from the military. In his later life he collected mainly military items and particularly spy / clandestine objects. Whilst visiting Devon in the 1960's he became acquainted with Charles Frazer Smith who had worked for MI6 & MI9 in the war, and designed spy items for the SOE and others. Arthur died aged 91 after a short illness on 27th Feb 2010. His amassed collection is now being offered for sale by his family.

Lot 218

A stained hardwood, probably elm, commemorative portrait relief panel of Field Marshal Sir Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, after Peter Rouw (1770-1852), circa 1820, the Duke portrayed in profile looking to sinister; the stained pine frame carved with laurel in relief, 40 x 32cm overall Arthur Wellesley was born in Dublin to the Earl and Countess of Mornington. Though he was an active politician and even served as Chief Secretary of Ireland and later Prime Minister during his lifetime, he is mainly remembered for his remarkable military achievements. Wellesley fought in Flanders in 1794 and subsequently directed a military campaign in India in 1796, for the success of which he was knighted upon his return to the UK. He was given the title Duke of Wellington in 1814, in the year before his most famous victory: the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815. When he returned to England, he was honoured and celebrated as a national hero. The present relief was probably made in the years after this landmark victory. The choice of timber carries a wider significance. At a crossroads near the battlefield at Waterloo stood an elm tree, later nicknamed the 'Waterloo Elm', which had often served as a command post for the Duke. The tree died at the hands of souvenir hunters in the years after the battle, and was subsequently turned into furniture and objects, including a chair by Thomas Chippendale the Younger which was presented to King George IV and still remains in the Royal Collection. John Children, an entrepreneurial librarian at the British Museum, acquired the felled tree to sell its wood for the manufacture of further objects. It is possible that the panel is connected to this thriving souvenir market for commemorative objects in (Wellington's) elm.A similar relief, only carved in oak, is in the collection of the National Army Museum, NAM. 2000-07-119-1.

The Bn took part in the famous 1914 Christmas 'truce', whilst entrenched around Ploegsteert Wood.  The 1914 operations cost the 1st Battalion some 36 officers and 1,153 other ranks as casualties.1st Day of the Somme: War Diary states: 'Z day. Fine and warm. After a very intense bombardment, at 7.20 am a large mine was exploded under the Hawthorn Redoubt. Practically no casualties were suffered while in Assembly trenches. At 7.30 am the attack was launched. The 11th Brigade advanced in magnificent style. The advance was carried out excellently to start with, and a severe barrage was not encountered. Shortly after heavy rifle fire was opened and machine guns from both flanks…The battalion had to ease off to the left owing to the ridge which it should have crossed, being swept by machine guns. The diary of Lance-Corporal Arthur Henry Cook illustrates the fighting: It is a lovely morning and the birds are singing…The bombardment is now terrific the German lines are one cloud of smoke, that it seems to be impossible for anyone to live in such a hell…We were able to stand on the parapet to get a better view, there is not a sign of life in front and no response from the German Artillery…Our men were timed to advance 10 minutes after the Rifle Brigade, but so eager were they to get on, that they left soon after…and consequently were caught in the open by these guns…I led the platoon in to the German first line, and after a breather went in to the German second line, here I lost control owing to the men rushing from one shell hole to another in their advance. The ground is littered with our dead…The clearing parties are not doing their work properly in clearing the trenches of all Germans, as here and there parties of Jerrys are popping up and throwing grenades at us from all angles…It is impossible to get any further…the shell holes are full of wounded and no hopes of getting them back…The Germans were now trying to force us out of their trenches, we got together what was left of us now and by collecting bombs from the dead and what Jerry left behind we managed to hold on…then the supply of bombs gave out and no more could be got, the Germans then gradually drove us back inch by inch through their superior supply of bombs…We are a very small number here now and men are being killed and wounded in all directions…I have a terrible thirst caused by the fumes from the shells, the wounded are also crying out for water, but none is available…Our troops are gradually retiring leaving a very small garrison to hold the trench…This is getting pretty hot here now but our orders are to hang on to what we have until midnight, when we are being relieved…The enemy artillery has now started and are dropping shells thick and fast all around us…We held on until relieved about 11 pm, an officer then said we may go back, we didn’t need telling again, we had had our belly full.

DOYLE ARTHUR CONAN: (1859-1930) Scottish Author, creator of Sherlock Holmes. A fine A.L.S., A Conan Doyle, on two sides of his personal printed correspondence card, Bignell Wood, Minstead, Lyndhurst, Hampshire, 12th November n.y. (annotated 1926 in pencil in an unidentified hand), to an unknown correspondent, although presumably a literary critic. Doyle commences 'I remember old James Payn when I was his pupil giving me the standing rule “Never argue with a critic”. I have kept it fairly well (save in psychic matters) and I do not feel galled by criticism for I always feel that if one does the very best one can Time will sort it out and what is worthy will remain & what dies should die', further adding 'Therefore I hardly know why I wrote to you save that it is an interesting point to argue how far a falling off is real or apparent & how far the fresh mind reacts as it used to do.' Doyle continues 'I was conscious at one time that [Sherlock] Holmes was strained & for some years I only wrote one story a year. I can truly say I have never written to order or allowed the money side of it to influence me at all. But I have not felt him strained in this last series of six. Five of these are done, and I will not do the sixth if I have any reason to think there is a real declension. I have my ear on the ground'. In concluding Doyle thanks his correspondent for their 'frank criticism & courteous letter' and remarks 'I should be a fool indeed if I resented what is honestly said'. A letter of good literary content and with a rare reference to Sherlock Holmes. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG £5000-8000 James Payn (1830-1898) English Novelist & Editor of Chambers's Journal and the Cornhill Magazine. Presuming that the date of 1926 is correct, then Doyle would have been making reference to the final six Sherlock Holmes stories he would write, each of which appeared in The Strand Magazine between October 1926 and April 1927, concluding with The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place.
