Stanley (Henry Morton, 1841-1904). In Darkest Africa, Or the Quest, Rescue and Retreat of Emin, Governor of Equatoria, new edition, corrected and revised throughout, 1897, wood-eng. plts. and illusts. including frontis., large folding col. map at rear, torn without loss and detached with accompanying index leaf (small split without loss), pubs. ad leaf at rear, half-title detached, frontispiece recto with signed presentation inscription from the author, ‘To my dear Mounteney Jephson, the last survivor of the gallant band of officers who made the expedition a success, from Henry M. Stanley. This volume is one of the first five issued of this edition, June 22nd 1897, Jubilee Day’, orig. red cloth gilt, inner hinges broken, rubbed and some wear with loss at head and foot of spine not affecting gilt lettering, some edge and corner wear, 8vo. Arthur Jermy Mounteney Jephson (1859-1908) accompanied Stanley on the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition, 1887-1889. His Diary, edited by Dorothy Middleton, was published by the Hakluyt Society, 1969. The other officers of the Advance Column had died prior to the presentation of this book: Dr. Thomas Heazle Parke (1857-1893), Robert Henry Nelson (1853-1892) and William Grant Stairs (1863-1892). The group are pictured together in the frontispiece to the book, Jephson seated to Stanley’s left. (1).

Asprey, a silver mounted dressing set in a natural pigskin case by Asprey & Co. Ltd, London 1939-40, the ten mounted fittings engine turned, comprising: a hair brush, a comb, a hand mirror, a clothes brush, three glass bottles and three jars all fitted to one side of the case, the other for night clothes, the case and outer canvas cover initialled ‘C.A’, the case 34cm (13 1/2in) wide; sold with the original receipt from Asprey & Co. to Sir Arthur Grant dated 14th November 1942. Major Sir Arthur Lindsay Grant of Monymusk and Cullen, 11th Bt. (1911-1944) was the son of Colonel Sir Arthur Grant and Evelyn Alice Lindsay Wood and was in the Grenadier Guards. He married Priscilla Jean Fortescue Thomson, Baroness Tweedsmuir of Belhelvie, daughter of Brigadier Alan Fortescue Thomson on 14th May 1934. He was killed in action on 18th July 1944 in Normandy (mentioned in despatches posthumously). Christian Mona Grant (born 1920) was Arthur’s sister and married, firstly, Captain Michael Fife William Angas, son of Major L. Angas, on 14th November 1942. They were divorced in 1951 and she later remarried twice.

He later travelled to London working with the Illustrated London News among other publications. In 1889, from Trafalgar Studios, McCormick exhibited for the first time with the Royal Academy, London. This would be the beginning of a 30 year relationship with the institution. Snoddy records the artist`s address from 1895 as 58 Queen`s Road, St. John`s Wood [as per the reverse of the present work]; the artist resided at this address for over 40 years. The theme of pirates began to appear in the oeuvre at the turn of the century and the RA index of exhibitors lists two such works shown with them in 1903 and 1904. Among the artist`s best known commissions was the iconic sailor`s head and shoulders on the cigarette packets for tobacco manufacturers, John Player & Son in 1927. His works can be found in the Victoria & Albert Museum, Imperial War Museum and the Borough Council, Coleraine among others. For further reading see Snoddy p.370-372.
