A Fine Victorian mahogany RegulatorBy Thomas Porthouse, 10 Northampton Square, London, Maker to the AdmiraltyWith an arched case, fully glazed door, on plinth base, the 12in dial, fully signed, with subsidaries for hours and seconds, and sweep centre minutes, finely made blued steel hands, the substantial plates with turned pillars screwed to each end, wheels of six crossings, deadbeat escapement with jewelled pallets, maintaining power, with steel pendulum rod supporting a glass jar (for mercury not supplied)183cm high, (1 weight, 1 pendulum, 2 case keys and 1 bent scale)Active 1821-1860. Succeded by Porthouse and French and moved to 16 Northampton Square in 1863. Condition Report The case has been repolished and restored. There is carcass movement to the veneers on the arch which have cracked. There is no inspection door in the arch. The movement is clean albeit dusty and with some finger marks. There is no mercury to the pendulum. Weight replaced. The weight pulley is from a longcase clock. Pillar screws are all 'chewed' in the slots but using the wrong sized screwdriver. Not currently working.
