Consider the distance of your station and still entertaining a hope that the differences with Holland may be speedily and satisfactorily adjusted we have not thought it prudent to direct you at once to give effect to the embargo but if the Dutch fit out privateers or capture a single British Vessell you must sweep the Indian seas of their flag...’
India – the Indian Mutiny fine letter dated June 18th 1857 written by a British priest named the Rev G Bowen from Bombay to Major S D Young at Chicacole 2pp 4to on onion paper with integral address leaf bearing two East India Company stamps and a ‘Chicagole Paid’ cancellation. In the letter Bowen refers to the Indian Mutiny which was just about at an end saying that ‘I think we should not now be hearing of the mutiny in the Bengal army perhaps because there has been so much ungodliness licentiousness intemperance blasphemy mockery of religion that the Lord has withdrawn (temporarily I trust) his support...the tide has swept east and west and threatens ...no one can say but it may sweep the entire land..’

An unusual early 19c double dial pocket watch, the verge movement winds through the front dial and has rectangular baluster pillars. The front dial has Arabic numerals and hour and minute hands and the rear dial is marked for a sweep minute hand (now missing). The movement is unsigned and is contained in a base metal case with both front and rear convex bulls eye glasses, 2"diam overall.
