JEAN DEBUT FRENCH BRONZE SCULPTURE OF BARD Jean Didier Début (FRENCH, 1824-1893) bronze sculpture depicting a bard holding a harp to his shoulder and sword hanging from his belt. Raised plaque to front of base bears the title of the work `BARDE`. Also inscribed is `2e Gd Prix de Rome`. Debut was awarded the 2nd prize in 1851 as runner up to 1st place winner Gustave Adolphe Désiré Crauk / Crauck (FRENCH, 1827 - 1905). The `Prix de Rome` is a program of rewards for exemplary work in the arts by the French government as early as 1673 for sculpture. Measures 14 1/4" height (36.1cm). Total weight of 3369 grams.
