1987 TVR 350iReg. no. FXI 350Chassis no. SA9DH35P8HB019122Engine no. 37A00452CIn 1982, TVR – then recently bought by Peter Wheeler – addressed their new owner’s desire for a more powerful model by introducing the Rover V8-powered 350i. This car was based on the similarly wedge-shaped but V6-powered Tasmin 280i, and as with all TVRs, it featured a tubular spaceframe steel chassis. Also common to other TVRs, the running gear, electrical parts and many trim pieces were sourced from a variety of mainstream manufacturers. The steering and front suspension were Ford-sourced; the rear axle Jaguar; the five-speed gearbox Rover. The end result, however, was a uniquely TVR product; an exciting, lightweight sports car. With 190bhp now on tap from the Rover SD1-sourced engine – rising to 197bhp in 1985 – the 350i was a very fast car for the time, with 60 arriving in around 6.5 seconds, and a top speed of almost 140mph. The interior was surprisingly luxurious, with a polished wooden dashboard and comfortable seats, and this coupled to the smooth, torquey engine meant the new TVR was not a tiring car to drive at all. Available in both convertible and coupe forms, the convertible was the more popular model, with the folding hood being well-engineered and easy to raise and lower. In addition, it was found that there was minimal buffeting of the fabric roof even at high speed. 949 350is were built before the end of production in 1989, while the car’s underpinnings lived on in some of TVR’s models of the following decade. This 1987 350i is in good all-round condition but requires some further recommissioning before much use. It was purchased last year by the vendor as a non-runner, before which it had not been used much, covering less than 300 miles since 2012. Now running and driving, more fettling is needed to further improve the car. It benefitted from a full brake rebuild at 82,264 miles; it is now at 83,000. It has also had new plug leads and distributor cap, the starter motor has been replaced, and a new battery fitted. It has also been fitted with a stainless exhaust system. This distinctive 1980s ‘wedge’ comes with MOTs dating back to 1991, plus some bills and a V5C.
